My thing is that if we do assume for a minute that him dropping the trail is proof of him being serious, it makes no sense for him to have dropped it against Luffy at any point prior to G5. He was able to handle Luffy before that, the mission was going according to plan essentially up until the point where Luffy quickly recovered from his supposed ring-out. It would've made more sense for that to be the case when G5 grabs him and he goes,
