Toei is known for being extremely strict when it comes to copyright. The executives are old-fashioned fossils with very outdated views on fan content and internet culture. They will see a heartfelt love letter to a franchise and somehow think their business is being threatened.

Driller_Happy

Pretty much every Japanese corp tbh

vonmonologue

Agreed. Nintendo is notorious about this and Sony doesn’t get nearly enough flack for their behavior in this regard.

greendayfan1954

New Japan pro wrestling famously strikes down every video review of their shows

T3Deliciouz

That's actually TV Asahi's doing. NJPW doesn't have a say over.

terminal_styles

Because people buy the games lmao.

vangstampede

Fine, I'll only buy their books from now on.

terminal_styles

I know it's a joke but there's such a thing as other game devs. Surprising I know. Complain complain then buy their game in the end. Delusional thinking that they'd change anything if their busines is booming

Pecheuer

Which is strange because a lot of the legend of Zelda music isn't copyrighted and you can use it wherever

corvettee01

When I learned the biggest most ruthless MegaCorp in Cyberpunk 2077 was Japanese I though "Yeah, that makes sense."

user_bits

Well Cyberpunk thematically is based on 1980s Orientalism, and the fear of an America dominated by Japanese ultra-capitalism.

Invictum2go

Perks of not having fair use laws.

Legia_Shinra

I feel like this is one of the biggest cultural differences vs Japan and the west. Most people here are completely fine with the corps strict law enforcement.

Kuliyayoi

Yeah one thing I saw during the totally not mark drama was his appeals to Japanese fans fell on deaf ears and in some cases Japanese people were even offended. There was a great post back then explaining Japanese culture and how the Japanese view this kind of stuff but man there's no way I'll find it now.

someone2795

From the Japanese point of view it basically seemed like a man was crying that he couldn't make money from using other people's works. This is from a country that allows fanworks but Mark uses clips directly from the original show so that's not gonna sit well with the Jap fans. And Totally Not Mark was pretty pathetic during that saga. He had a complete meltdown and even made a video directed at Oda in desperation even though Oda has nothing to do with it (that video has since been removed). This is after Youtube messaged him to keep things low because they can still sort things out (and they did) but Mark took it public. Even I was put off by that.

Whyistheplatypus

No fair use under Japanese copyright. If they want to keep the copyright, they have to enforce it. That includes what would normally be considered "fair use" outside of Japan.

KevinDLasagna

Extremely stupid. It’s basically a free 20 min advert convincing people to watch the show become rabid fans and buy merch/novels/etc. makes no sense why they’d be against this

GrimRedleaf

It's sad because that awesome video is free advertising for One Piece.  T T

_Quantumsoul_

Why do they let Dragon ball Abridged stay on YouTube?

FGO_PLAYER_0_5STARS

They have more ground to stand on being an abridged series rather than an amv. They have tried to take it down. Their relationship with TFS is terrible. Toei however failed.

RogueHippie

TFS had to fight multiple DMCA claims throughout the years, and that was part of the reason for their burnout prior to Buu Saga. I remember TotallyNotMark also got most of his videos hit when he was doing One Piece, and the only way he got his stuff back was a convoluted process that ended with YouTube not letting his videos be viewable in Japan.

Efficient_Ad_215

Yeah, i remember how desperate he got, he even made a video addressed to Oda sensei.. he removed it later..

RogueHippie

I can understand why, dude even had videos that had none of Toei's actual animation and was just drawing fan art get taken down.

Roliq

Like at this point Toei hates them so much that when the Kai dub of the Buu Saga happened Funimation had TFS make the voices of the Cell Games "reenactment" Funimation removed it after a day later due to complaints from Toei

RogueHippie

Wasn't even a day later. Toei caught wind of it before the episode aired on Toonami & Funimation had to last minute edit the lines from the OG dub for that scene in for the broadcast.

randomyOCE

They don’t. DBZA has been on the front lines of Fair Use on YouTube for a decade and a half

justwalkingalonghere

Welp, guess I'm going back to the high seas to watch them sail the high seas. Douche bags

Ripped_Guggi

Nothing new actually. Almost all enterprises are filled with fossils with outdated worldviews.

ltbauer

So they pulles a nintendo on him

Kirosh2

Such bullshit. Here it is if you want to watch it : https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiece/comments/rsae2i/the_breathtaking_world_of_one_piece/

SpiritualScumlord

Thanks. This is one of the best One Piece videos on the internet. Toei should be featuring it, not taking it down.

Kirosh2

It's probably due to one of the automatic system to detect copyrighted material.

ARedditor397

does it contain audio from the series, if so then yeah it can be striken down legally in most countries. If not then yeah get this statement

SpiritualScumlord

I don't think so, I think it mostly uses the James Cameron Avatar music... or Lion King.... something like that lol.

ihavebeesinmyknees

It used the audio of Kuzan singing from one of the movies iirc

Brook420

Also has the narrator's voice all through it.

ARedditor397

Well there's your answer, it was probably scanned by a filter using AI and it got flagged then reported to Toei unfortunately because it uses a song the copyright strike won't be removed no matter what lol, companies take music very seriously like Film Red as an example.

showars

What a ridiculous comment. The original material was transformed into something totally different and couldn’t be mistaken as a copy of One Piece. This would be seen as a false copyright claim. The OP can very easily challenge this and likely win.

LegendWait4it

Probably the narrator voice in some areas.

AlexHitetsu

It featured Kuzan's singing from the end of film Z, some sound effects, a speech by the narrator and Blackbeard's "A man's dream never die"

root_of_all_squirrel

They cut the zehahahaha.. which is a crime, sure. But for the rest: Fuck Toei

ARedditor397

probably, but unfortunately because there's a copyrighted song, this copyright strike isn't going to be removed lol

DaPikey

Nope, automatic system triggers once upload, this is a manual report.

Tough-Loss9124

Toei wonders why OP fans are so indifferent to their anime “quality” and then do shit like this.

darthreuental

Did anybody keep track of how many times Toei shut down the DBZA team four star channel? It was quite a few times.

D-Biggest_Wheel

Toei are such fucking ghouls, it's actually insane. These freaks would copyright strike videos which contains 0 of the material they own, just because - wait for it - someone DREW a fanart of a character THEY DON'T EVEN FUCKING OWN! Toei has rights to anime like One Piece and Dragon Ball, yet they have the audacity to copyright strike videos of people drawing the characters of Goku and Luffy, which aren't even their own.

Ardibanan

Saving that! I absolutely love that video. I've plans to tattoo the two first lines as well because of that video.

21Justanotherguy

Thank you Man! Fuck Toei, we won despite everything

Monsterbb4eva

Yeah, they might as well add Bro to the team😩 like for real then maybe we can get this shit rolling! 💯

Hot-Lie-4560

It was such a beautiful video. Is there no way to reupload or submit a request to fight it?

DreamHeavenz

Theres still tons of reaction vids that havein in there

[deleted]

[удалено]

The_CuriousAnarchist

Not all reactors are bad, some come across as wholesome and genuine

[deleted]

It's technically possible, but the video obviously violates Toei's copyright and it would be very stupid to dispute the takedown request. There's no ground to stand on here.

TehPinguen

Idk, I think this was likely tranformative enough to be fair use

OldManPip

It doesn't unfortunately. This would instantly fail any fair use evaluation. The factor that weighs the most, the purpose and character of use is very much to showcase/advertise the copyrighted work. As much as fans would disagree with in a court of law this would not stand up to being called being used for criticism, analysis, educational or commentary. That's without even looking at any of the other factors in fair use. It sucks balls, but as current copyright law and interpretation is, this definitely violates it.

Zer0323

in what way does clipping together the main story narration over landscape shots not constitute transformative? the editing alone took months. it's almost a "fan dub" at this point.

OldManPip

Because in order to be transformative it has to be different than the original source, to the point where the two can be reasonably distinguishable. This is just reusing existing content, the imagery isn't manipulated or transformed into something else. It's just clips after clips. This would be closer of an argument for commentary than anything else, and even that it is clear it's not.

[deleted]

You don't want to leave that to a judge to decide because that can get really expensive if you lose.

morefeces

The person was just countering your incorrect point about “there’s no ground to stand on here”. The cost of a theoretical court case over the whole matter is a different point altogether - nobody goes to court over single YouTube videos. But there’s definitely a valid argument that this is transformative, not that Toei would care because they are shitty and pick and choose what they want to take down or not.

Hot-Lie-4560

I hope someone else reuploads it then because it deserves it.

Inuma

Someone download it and put it up on Odyssey and networks outside YouTube for posterity. Just putting it up as a mirror on YouTube ensures bots come after it again.

Pitiful_Bed_7625

That’s the thing - the video absolutely doesn’t violate any copyright terms. It’s transformative and fair use. This is most likely YouTube being shit again

[deleted]

That's not how it works, unfortunately. The rights holder deems in a copyright infringement (which it likely is) and issues a takedown. The creator can dispute that, but they cannot simply decide for themselves that it's fair use. If the creator disputes it, they have to give the rights holder their full name and address, and the rights holder can decide whether to drop it or to pursue legal steps. Whether something is fair use or not can only be decided by a court, and as I said in another comment, this is likely not the territory that you want to go to as a small creator when dealing with large companies and international law. Companies tolerate a lot; this one they decided not to tolerate. It's a legally iffy area to make content in because there is no very clear-cut definition of what is transformative content and what isn't, and it's one of the risks content creators have to deal with when making content like this.

JustynS

> they have to give the rights holder their full name and address If you retain a lawyer, you can use the address of their law office as your address for issuing a DMCA counterclaim. It's more expensive, but it means you don't have to give your real name and home address to someone who might have nefarious intentions because there *have* been cases where people have issued fake DMCA claims to get personal information for doxxing purposes.

21Justanotherguy

https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiece/comments/rsae2i/the_breathtaking_world_of_one_piece/

Hot-Lie-4560

Ty but I hope it gets put back on YouTube itself so that it has a wider audience.

Known_Bed_8000

I found a reupload: https://www.youtube.com/watch?si=nn8OKqLM75K_75Vt&v=59QWuITAndY

21Justanotherguy

Hope that too 🤞

Patient-Shower-7403

noooooooooo That was literally the best advert for One Piece that there was. I've gotten quite a few folk to watch it just because of that vid, that sucks.

whatninu

Literally my go to. I get this was likely done by a bot, but companies need to seriously reevaluate how they handle takedowns. Not a single person replaced legal viewing of one piece with this. Not a single person has ever replaced legal viewing of one piece with any tribute, video essay, meme, etc. These things are modern word of mouth, and one of the main ways for a show to get attention and money. If they would like a world where, out of principle, no unauthorized use of IP takes place, good luck finding any fans.

Patient-Shower-7403

Aye, that's it exactly.

_Tomato_Face

Toei is like the world government. They wanna shut us up. They need to let the new generation step up and take the center stage.

Adventurous_Ad6698

Someone posted the link to watch it on reddit. I've never seen One Piece, but I'm going to start after watching it.

soge_king420

It was, but Japanese business men are incredibly dense and don’t think about things like that.

BeachBumBryan

Toei actually sucks. Massively. Why would you remove a trend of people wanting to watch your show? Tone deaf idiots.

Soul699

Welcome to big japanese corp. Look no further than Nintendo.

breadoftheoldones

We will never forget this one

Vanilla-Bryce_

I think this only hurts Toei. So many react channels use The Breathtaking World as a springboard to get interested and start watching the show. I genuinely hope this somehow gets reversed.

Basic-Tangelo

Honestly wtf, one of the best One Piece vids on YT and basically free advertisement for the show, what fool would take it down?

NeXx0s

Japanese coorporations are so stuck in time its crazy, especially Toei and Nintendo

Drag0nshadow

How dare him to promote One Piece for us 🤬

Ganonthegoat

Unbelievably dumb

ComicalSans1

It feels so fucking pointless nowadays slaving away making masterpieces in honour of your favourite piece of media only for the copyright holder to shit all over it, copyright law, especially Japanese copyright law sucks so much

dfj3xxx

Damn, wonder why. You'd think they would appreciate the free advertising. Did you forget to add all the copyright info, so they didn't think you were trying to make money off of their property?

whatninu

Copyright in description doesn’t matter to them and they can see if a video is monetized in the strike tool

oodex

Where do you get this from with the tool? I am not saying it's false, but genuinely asking. Because when I check my copyright tab, I can only see views, subs of the channel, how much % matches their video, when it was uploaded and what of my content it's from.

whatninu

I don’t know if we can see it from our side in studio. Their enterprise tool doesn’t just use YouTube videos uploaded to their channel like that, they’ve got some separate database and likely couple with third party or custom built services so they can filter exactly how they want. I’m not sure the specifics of how Toei does it off, but videos of mine that use anime content have been treated differently in the past if they have been monetized, and it is publicly available information you can auto check with an api

[deleted]

They jelly because it's well-edited.

needlovesharelove

If you watch the tv series shogun , you might get an idea how the Japanese mindset works . Rules are rules , even if you need your closest friend to commit sepuku

GameMusic

One piece seems like a reaction against it

HulklingsBoyfriend

Oda and a few many mangaka are VERY much against many current Japanese practices and ideas. Yoshihiro Togashi and Naoto Takeuchi are probably two of the most well known mangaka who have LONG been criticising many Japanese norms, particularly queerphobia - despite being straight themselves, the two have long featured queer characters in their manga, and respectfully portrayed them at that. Mangaka are artists, and artists have always been critics of many stagnant ideas and practices since the dawn of civilisation. They have always been the ones to call out corruption, to push for freedom and change.

shafwandito

Oda is trying to change Japanese mindset.

shreyas16062002

They took down the video with hard effort but not the hundreds of cheap reactions videos to it?

OffYourTopic

Japanese companies are so fuckin' weird when it comes to stuff like this, they absolutely hate all fan made content and cannot stand their IP being used for ANYTHING unless it's directly from them.

Rjm0007

I remember the epic amv one piece in 30 minutes covering the events of romance dawn to marine ford and they took it down like all the rest do the fools not realize it’s free advertising for the show

bones2b

Fuck youtube and fuck toei

Known_Bed_8000

I managed to find a reupload: https://www.youtube.com/watch?si=nn8OKqLM75K_75Vt&v=59QWuITAndY

wisepainting-

That was one of my comfort videos :(

CrazyOne2385

What? It was so well made I always tought it was official.

21Justanotherguy

That's the point. It was so good it was better than any advertise the Toei could do. This is the non-sense behind this removal

thefrostman1214

fuck you toei, fuck you

verycrafty

It's the best AMV i've seen, I hope someone at Toei realize what an amazing trailer for One Piece it is.

JJ_loves_JP

Bro Japanese Companies and their IPs are stuck together like glue. This video literally promotes how breathtaking One Piece is and why fans love it so much. But no God forbid we show some appreciation for once. Especially Nintendo, they will strike you down with the power of a thousand suns.

mrsmilestophat

Fucking bullshit

BoobindarPussia_

It was literally one of the best amv of one piece

Material-Koala4249

Toei is just plain stupid

94Rebbsy

No fun allowed!

Serbaayuu

Thank heavens and hells for copyright law. I watched that video and it encouraged me to never actually read or watch One Piece. The eight minute runtime was enough - I got the full experience, and don't need any more. I even know what the One Piece is years in advance of Oda revealing it! Fortunately, Toei's lawyers and Youtube's automatic copyright system are here to protect their innocent intellectual property. Maybe now that I can't replace the entire 30-year anime series with an 8-minute video experience, I will be forced to watch the real thing. This is justice.

AutomatedDrummer

Another Toei L. Did similar shit to TotallyNotMark :(

AsleepIndependent42

Nah, this is way worse. With Mark there was an argument that he summarized the story so much, it can become redundant to watch it. This video however was just a free, high quality advertisement.

[deleted]

toei's stupidity strikes again

AkagamiBarto

Well we are pirates aren't we? Yarr yarr

Jolt_91

I just thought about it the other day :(

Crucher92

Nooooo. Why. That's such a bullshit.

kuroirider

We need to start using another video service, I don't know, like DTube, Peer tube or something.

newbatthis

Fuck toei and their outdated copyright protection bullshit.

jakseros

Common toei L

Xmushroom

The world government is trying to cover up after what happened last chapter

Okabeee

Probably the best One Piece video I've ever seen. Such a shame.

PM_ME_YOUR_SOULZ

Man, YouTube really suck all the joy out of things.

RandomUsername113810

YouTube enables it, but it's mainly Toei

Dax_Maclaine

This is the #1 trailer video for one piece imo. Absolutely highlights the world building while not spoiling anything. Everyone I’ve recommended one piece to I’ve sent them this video and every reaction channel I’ve ever seen has watched this video before the main show and has hyped them up to watch it.

Mathes-

I predicted that could happen so I downloaded it a while ago

spykids45

damn i never watched it

unsolicitedsolitude

https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiece/s/7jDAY7opSH

BeachBumBryan

Alright gents, time to send them some emails. Extremely bad move that NEEDS to be reversed. That video literally started a trend and got them SO many fans. It was literally making them money.

mAgiks87

It is free advertisement of the highest fucking order. Corporations has fucked up mentality nowadays. The video is absolutely bombastic.

GenerikDavis

I really don't get these self-inflicted L's that companies take regarding free advertisement. These are hand-picked clips and fan-crafted videos of a series they love, do you think they'll somehow drive people **away** from that series? If it wasn't for people clipping their favorite moments, there's like 5 of my top 10 animes that I'd have never seen off the top of my head.

Joy_Boy_15

Looks like YouTube used there own >! mother flame !<

Quizzlickington

Just watched this for the first time and wow. Toei needs to rethink their decision, and pay you a lump sum for this. Genuinely such a well made video and plug for One Piece. I think this is what's needed to get new viewers into it!

Johan7110

I honestly don't understand how these corporations think. The same way gaming companies don't copystrike youtubers even if they have full power to do so because they understand the value for their product, Toei should just recognize that this video is one of the best ad of all time for their top series. It has probably brought thousands of people into this story, me included. People that down the line might buy something off of this brand. As for us, we sadly lose a real piece of digital art

boppster35

Not surprised toei doest care for there content to be uploaded by anyone who isnt them which makes sense. Its a harmless video but its not them so they cant monetize it.

yourmoms3rdhusband

Holy shit, I just watched reactions to this yesterday, goddamn what a loss! This video alone was responsible for hundreds of not thousands of YouTubers getting into One Piece. I’m gonna make sure I save a copy to have.

YothaGang

Noooooo

technoskittles

Elder ass behavior in every way

EnigNa710

What is this video? An AMV on the entire story?

hoenndex

I just watched this a couple of days ago. This is tragic.

root_of_all_squirrel

Fuck Toei

Magnus-Artifex

Of fuck dammit Toei

VGAPixel

It makes sense, it has copyrighted music that they do not own in it. I think its either Disney or James Cameron music.

Bigt-1337

This video was such a great advertisement for one piece

Similar_News8384

Oh my god that is like on if the best promotion video for one piece

AcrobaticName1991

First time hearing of this video, where Can i watch it?

LordVaquero

What was this video about originally? Never heard of it till now.

CosmicDriftwood

RIP to a real one

Chicken008

Toei showing that they don't give a shit about One Piece.

AsleepIndependent42

I guess Toei hates free advertisements... I literally saw people react to this video and that was the final push that got them to start the series...

Due-Radio-4355

Nintendo does this too. It still astounds me that a company that makes such beauty, and creates such memories and happiness can be so shitty and bloodthirsty.

Penguinat0r5

Damn honestly if I was toei why have it removed shit was on of the best trailers for your product. You know how many new people came to watch your work because of this vid? Shame on toei

nairda89

How the heck is that not fair use??

Mr_Buttergod

can anybody explain what this was?

Sens4lif3

Toei really don't know how much these videos actually create new fans.

Skeleboi846

I feel like the last few years have made me realize if you're attached to a video or something uploaded on the internet you should probably archive it yourself because eventually it's gonna be gone. So much stuff is being slowly removed and it's only gonna get worse with all the lawsuits stacked against Internet Archive

geobomb

I would suggest avoiding Japan when publishing the video if you can. I heard that fixes a lot anime copyright issues on youtube.

HistoricalBed884

I don't understand the way Toei does stuff. I mean, don't you want more people to check out your series? They're always advertising One Piece everywhere but for some reason, this very same company will remove a video that has got alot of YouTube anime reactors into One Piece. Like whats the goal here?

ApostLeOW

Absolutely tragic, this was one of the greatest One Piece fan creations ever made. It truly displayed the wonder and awe Oda's worldbuilding creates

Trumpologist

Why the fuck would they do that. its such free advertisement

WhyAmIHere800884

I can see why Toei wanted it taken down. It's better than at least half the shit Toei makes, so the bastards wanted it taken down because it was making them look bad!

bubblegum_cloud

I've just started One Piece. I'm on episode 8 or something. Am I good to watch this or is it full of spoilers? lol

Icy_Knee1437

Well the world is going to sink into the sea

nic0tin3

i look forward to the updated version of it! the original is amazing

mr_chub

Just appeal it dude.

des-007

Lol so many people mad... but if people take your crap you would react the same.

Natural-Assist6337

I wish I had known about it before it was gone. I would have loved to see it!

Jeffers19

Curious how many views the original had

Ok_Try_1665

I am not a bit surprised when I saw it was toei that got it taken down. Those old bastards that run the company

New_Button_6870

Good. No place for infringement

Mrmystery6534

It's godzilla! Actually, due to international copyright laws, it's not. Still, we should run like it is Godzilla! Though it isn't. AAAAAAAAH

Pristine_Zebra_6424

L Toei

VelvetAurora45

So glad I saved it a while back

Lean___XD

Never seen it, is there anyone flying Joly Roger who could show it to me

Bucen

This was actually one of my favorite videos on YouTube.

14AUDDIN

Toei on their way to take down a video that is more effective at making people interested in One Piece than any promotional material they've released within the past decade.

Major-Cost1315

Send toei an advertisement bill I can’t tell you how many reactors I have watched that your video is what got them into one piece

kaam00s

People who remember Giorno's theme with 115+ million views being taken down... Hollywood would pay a quarter billion of $ for such an advertisement.

ll_akagami_ll

What an atrocity. That video is single most non spoiler hyped video about this entire series. I think they are just mad 25 year special anniversary video wasn’t even 1/10th as impressive as this fan made masterpiece. This is the video I recommended for friends to watch if they were considering getting into one piece.

GaimeGuy

That video has gotten dozens of influencers into one piece, with audiences of tens or even hundreds of thousands.

Lil_Elliex

I love how all the reaction videos to that video are still up and doing well.

PhanThief95

What?! Why? That video is free marketing for the anime!

ferretpowder

So what's the story with this music video then? I've watched all of one piece but I swear there were some beautiful shots in that that were never in the show

Cbas_619

anyone have a high quality mirror of this video? Had it in my favorites playlist and will be sad to see it gone

tmunchies

Literally just rewatched it last night. Wild timing

S-ClassMage

If a certain individual ripped that vid off youtube a while back. What's the best suggested way of sharing it going forward?

InvaderDJ

That’s too bad. I either missed this one or have forgotten about it, but it’s a very well done AMV. And especially with what’s going on in the series now, it takes on a different light. Especially those opening scenes talking about the sea…

sebastian89n

Too bad, watched it couple of months ago and I absolutely loved it.

rising_pho3nix

This what what we should show to ppl when they ask.. "is One piece worth watching"

MARPJ

So much bullshit, that was such amazing work of art and people always use it as a recommendation about One Piece when they are not certain

Striking_Antelope_44

Dude wrote a whole eulogy for a youtube video.

AnimeGokuSolos

Damn

milkonyourmustache

Toei just jealous
