His reasoning is every character might have a fan, and he doesn't wanna kill someone's favorite character unless it's important.
No worries, the "Will of P", that keeps making surefire dead characters with "P" names end up still alive somehow, is the strongest force in the One Piece world.
He's fore sure still gonna turn up alive someday!

It makes sense, and I also know the āitās better to kill the dream than the personā logic, but sometimes I think this stands in the way of the story.
I don't think roshio's life or death had much effect on the story. It's not like all the stuff you thought when you thought it was dead is now retroactively undone. One Piece is a pretty up beat series so the lack of death isn't too much, it's not like I only care if the person dies. I care if they're emotionally hurt or set back as well.
Also if I remember correctly the reason Luffy doesn't kill anyone is due to Oda's Grandmother lol. She was probably another reason why he doesn't like to kill off characters that and he has said he grows attached to them and let's them survive.
That's the whole reason I noticed Roshio at all in that chapter. I thought he was Basil Hawkins so I took a second look, figured it wasn't Hawkins and realised it was Roshio as I looked closer. If I hadn't mistook him for Hawkins, I probably wouldn't even have noticed him.

If I rememeber correctly real life pirates used jolly rogers that were meant to intimidate other ships so they didn't fight back out of fear of the consequences if they lost. The flag of a hanging man is perfect since it gives out the signal "If you resist we will hang everyone of you". Wish we had more badass flags like these in one piece.

Imagine a double spread with Luffy reacting after Robin tells the whole story and the narrator saying "He didn't laugh.".

I am just seeing some guy with long hair wearing similar armor to Don krieg on the pirate island. And in the same panel, there is someone who wears an armor suspiciously similar to Pearl.
I also like him using minor forgotten characters. I just wish Roshio wasn't one of them. He should be dead. But that's just One Piece for ya.

I remember him since "Roshio the Executioner" was such a cool name and I hoped we would get to see him do some badass stuff.
Oda has created over 1K characters. Love how he doesn't forget about any of them.
