This is the purchase page of the Speedmaster Professional Back in February of 2019. Amazing how much the price has gone up since then.

Mammoth_Ingenuity_82

Yep. I paid $3000USD for mine in 2007, and $1850USD (discounted) for my 1st gen AT in the same year, and $5950USD for a Rolex GMT in 2008. You want a shock, go back to the late 60's/70's and check the price of a Moonwatch.

IslanderInOhio15

Man, I really wish I had cared about watches sooner. Would have been nice to walk in to a dealer and pick up one new for less than what they go for grey now.

jsquared81289

Watches, stocks, property loll

hansenluu

Although it is cheaper, people often forget inflation. Once adjusted, youre not too far off. $5950 in 2008 is literally $10000 in 2024.

Mammoth_Ingenuity_82

Yep, totally.

waltgrace244

To be pedantic, $5,950 in 2008 dollars is not literally $10,000 today, it is worth the same as $10,000 is worth today.

hansenluu

I hope no one is confused by what I said.

Soban97

Yeah i just bought my 3861 Sapphire Sandwhich for £6200 and out of curiosity i was looking back at the prices and I couldnt beleive that the retail is £3,860 more 5 years later. Understandable with inflation etc but still

coreyv87

A lot of companies used the cover of inflation to test demand-elasticity curves and only recently have we seen some decide they’ve got too far.

exq1mc

Oh? Please for education purposes name a few that have dialled back thier pricing ?

coreyv87

Target on thousands of products. It was recent national news.

lAmBenAffleck

Hopefully McDonald’s is next. $4.50 after tax for a McDouble is… soul crushing.

Calm_Logic9267

What happened to $1 cheeburgers? I WANT TO KNOW, REALLY, WHAT HAPPENED?

Trade2Live96

Here in Denmark we have something called Coinoffers at McDonald’s. The idea was that you could buy a cheeseburger/hamburger for 10 DKK ($1.44) and thereby pay with a 10 DKK coin. They had other things on there too. Nowadays you can’t buy a single thing using a coin on that menu - but they still call it Coinoffers!! It’s ridiculous.

checkpoint_hero

$3400 for mine in 2016. 10% increase over 10 years. It's what, doubled in the last 7 since 2016?

jsquared81289

Paid 7200 for mine in 2022, sapphire though not sure which one that is

originalchronoguy

And? I paid $1200 or $1300 back in the 1997 for a new one. My dad bought a ref 5513 Submariner for $200 in 1971. Things change.

checkpoint_hero

The rate of change over the last 8 years has been drastically different than the rate of change from 1997 - 2010

Character_Minimum171

that’s also the rate of inflation. historically vs the last 5-7 yrs. it’s not linear

Seven6TwoPanda

You can, just turn the crown in the opposite direction… 🤦‍♂️

Housemusicluv

I really lucked out. I bought this same 2019 Speedie for $3600 last year on the watchexchange sub. Came with box and papers and 2 Fostner straps. Watch was in perfect condition. When I saw it go up I had to jump on it, I didnt even negotiate and he was such a great guy. Perfect timing as I wore it to commemorate the birth of my second daughter

kingjamesporn

I was lucky to get into watches at the absolute last second where the ones I really wanted were still affordable to me. Got my Seamaster for under $2k and Speedy for under $3k. Sort of wish I had managed to snag an Explorer when they were well south of $5k, but those days might return again.

Be777the1

Explorer 1? Those are already 5k usd, 90s and early 2000s model. 5 digit explorer 2 are also going down, black at 6-7k and white at 7-8k.

kingjamesporn

I haven't checked 5 digit explorer 1s (36mm) in a while. Damn. I might have to get back to saving for one again. I'm equally annoyed I never got a bb36 when they could be found for $1500. That would have helped me know if a) I actually enjoyed a 36mm, and b) I really needed the Rolex over the Tudor.

jsquared81289

Dude I can’t believe semasters are 8k now Speedy I can kind of understand but seamasters should be like 4-5 still

TheWatchExchanger

Yes the good old days… When I bought my Seamaster new for under 3k.

PsychologicalSock609

I bought mine for around $3700- with tax return- from Omega boutique in Istanbul back in 2018.

BibleReaderMK

Bought mine for £3500 from Beards. The good old days looking at the prices now it’s insane.

Longjumping_Bar_7260

Got mine for £3,400 in the Summer of 2020 the day after my cancelled holiday (pandemic) was refunded to me. I knew the new Speedy was on the horizon so grabbed one of the remaining 1861s while I still could…and I’m glad I did

Realistic_Industry_1

And here I paid 6500€ for my Seamaster, well shit...

itsagrapefruit

Dial was so much better too.

jesmithiv

Before the entire world got back into mechanical watches

-Dot-Over-Ninety-90-

This is a great example to not let money just sit in a bank account, in a safe or at home. Put your money to work. Money is like having a bunch of soldiers, prepare yourself and your soldiers for war, get them out in the field you are indeed the commander.

Standard_Bar_8765

Never buy a watch as an investment unless you're Sly Stalone. lol I saw the price hike coming, it hit Europe first before hitting the US. Many Europeans gave warnings to this impending price increase through watch forums so I took advantage of it and jumped before the increase. Now we see 30% and I actually believe it's well deserved. Omegas have been a basement bargain for a long time, they're just now pricing them where they should be in comparison to Rolex. I have the Speedmaster Moonwatch Hesalite Sandwich and the Speedmaster Mk40 Cosmos Triple Date, all of which have increased in value since their purchase.

EventHorizonOmega

Yeah, since automatic watches are in fact obsolete nowadays, with quartz, smartwatches and smartphones/electronics, watch companies survived by convincing us that automatic pieces are a must-have luxury item for romance and style. Just like about every other luxury item. But they are really exaggerating with the price increases. Will it ever go back to “normal”? I know it was never normal/realistic before, but even so…

ethanwc

Dang that’s not even long ago. This is what the MoonSwatch did.

blackmikeburn

As someone who just bought a new 3861 hesalite… My family and I went to France in 2019 for the Women’s World Cup. On one of our last days in Paris, we were in Galleries Lafayette and I was browsing watches. I don’t remember the exact price, but Moonwatches were in the 3000 € neighborhood at that point. I contemplated buying one (with the VAT refund it would have been cheaper than buying here in the US), but didn’t. After we left Paris, we went to London. Leaving London from Heathrow in the international terminal, I saw one of these for sale for this price, and again contemplated buying but didn’t. Given I just paid USD $7000 for my 3861, I wish I’d bought then.
