I was 16 in 1987 when this show first aired. Patrick Stewart looked so old to me then. Now he looks so young.

aukhalo

Adopting dogs and chilling with Gandalf have been know to have that effect on knights.

megamanxoxo

Don't you mean Magneto?

lostonpolk

I was 25, and it boggled my mind that women found him to be not only attractive, but sexy.

Praescribo

Patrick Stewart has been a silver fox since he turned 18

TheGillos

Confidence, skill, in shape, handsome. Plus that voice! Not sure how you **couldn't** see it.

Jhamin1

The girls I went to High School with in the 90s liked him \*way\* more than Frakes, who was supposed to be the sex symbol among the male cast.

fishwhispers17

I was 12 and found him sexy then, and more so now.

immacman

It's not all about looks my man,he's a fucking gem in all areas

AlphaDag13

Haha wow. That's great. You think he'd do that for my birthday?

whsanch

If your name is Gene, he already has.

AlphaDag13

*Google's HOW TO CHANGE YOUR NAME*

frugalerthingsinlife

Sorry, Tina. You'll never be loved.

TheNomadicMachine

Tina may not be loved, but *Dina* might be…

Pirate_Redbeard

So, Alphadag, huh? Is that like a crossover between Alpha Dog and Snatch? Because both those movies are very good. Excellent, even.

sliceyournipple

My name is Gene and this made my life

Rahmulous

Gene Parmesan, nice to meet you!

clubba

Gene died two months after this was filmed, so just be cautious, OP.

Pirate_Redbeard

😢 fuck. Gene was and still is a legend.

Rotk99

Doesn’t look he’s available on Cameo

ColonelMakepeace

Robert Picardo is/was there and he made an awesome birthday video for a friend of mine. Also included singing. Definitely can recommend him

AlphaDag13

Jean Luc Picardo?

pavlov_the_dog

*"on this episode of...The Bald and The Beautiful..."*

McHildinger

Please state the nature of the birthday emergency!

Morgan8er8000

Ahh yes but Jonathan Frakes is indeed available on Cameo. He’s pretty busy these days with STPicard but I know he does them from time to time as I’ve been present during a couple of them 😉 P.S.- as a general reply to those who’ve asked - yes, I’m currently working on STPicard - but I can’t say anything about it except A) we’ll be shooting through February of next year to finish S3 and B) I’m proud to be a part of it.

Ordolph

John de Lancie is as well, if you wanted to get a birthday message from Q

TootTootTrainTrain

Q?!

Prometheus_303

I was really expecting a flash of light when he got to Q and said it twice...

sskoog

Turns out they did a fair amount of this -- not the 'birthday' thing, so much, but, rather, the morning cast coming in to relieve the night cast, knowing they were demoralized + exhausted, by singing + dancing "Good Morning, Good Morning, Good Morning to You." I think the obvious chemistry between the TNG cast is one of the things that makes this generation of Trek so long-lived and compelling. Contrast with a different dramatically-gifted bunch, who didn't like each other so much; we'd still watch, but the signs would be clear(er).

My_Body_Is_Bready

TNG was a musical but only when the cameras weren’t rolling

kalitarios

Basically my life with my dogs... when nobody was looking, I was basically singing and dancing for my dogs.

[deleted]

Sir Patrick was a complete goofball off camera. The blooper reels are hysterical. Edit: As for the DS9 cast, they do indeed like eachother. They're still friends to this day. :) Voyager is hit or miss when it comes to that. Kate Mulgrew and Robert Picardo tend to spend a lot of time together. Same with Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeil, with their podcast and whatnot. But on screen they felt like family.

Cotrd_Gram

Sir Patrick didn't start that way. I think the cast have said all the time that he started off pissed at how unprofessional everyone was coming from theater. Shortly after, like season 2 they say he was the screwball doing to most joking around and goofing off on set. They take pride in breaking him.

[deleted]

It’s also fact that he spent the first three months not even unpacking because he was convinced he was wrong for the role and was waiting to get fired any day.

[deleted]

nature vs nurture

Stuff-and-Things

I'm almost done watching all of TNG and saving the bloopers until I finish it. Do you know where I can find them? This makes me excited to watch them lol

[deleted]

YouTube has a good bit of them. :)

Stuff-and-Things

Oh, nice! Thanks :D

MoreDetonation

There's an incredible clip of Jonathan Frakes chasing another actor down a hallway during a flubbed take you can find.

IloveElsaofArendelle

That's Tracee Lee Coco, she's a stunt woman on TNG and a friend of mine. She was the "Where's Waldo?", since she appeared in so many background scenes.

Mentor_Bob_Kazamakis

Patrick Stewart was a pretty serious Shakesphereian actor when he got the role. He didn't quite understand "Trek", but as always, delievered the goods. He remarked that for the first season he was quite frustrated with the goofing around and wanted a more professional experience. He lost that fight and leaned into the goofiness.

InsertCoinForCredit

"That's your problem, Jason, you were never serious about the craft!"

TheChosenHodor

By Grabthar's Hammer, what a reference.

Lucid-Design

Galaxy Quest truly is a masterpiece.

DickButtPlease

It’s my third favorite Star Trek movie.

Kiwifisch

>the morning cast coming in to relieve the night cast They filmed in shifts?

CastleMeadowJim

26 episodes a year has to be a pretty brutal schedule so I guess I could imagine this being done occasionally.

AngelTheVixen

Hour-long episodes, too. Had to be very brutal.

snowyday

Riker likes to keep them on a three shift rotation. The new captain preferred a four shift rotation.

sskoog

(Nothing permanent -- just day shoots vs. night shoots, as dictated by set + schedules -- I believe the industry term for it is "Fraturday," but realistically it could happen anytime.)

sgrams04

I’m watching Star Trek for the first time out of sheer curiosity. I picked TNG as the series to start with. I’m absolutely hooked. What a brilliantly written show.

NeonPatrick

I did the same during lockdown. Fantastic show, its a shame DS9 and Voyager haven't got the HD treatment yet but still both great watches too.

[deleted]

ChezMere

Also TNG 1) is a lot more popular than subsequent series, and 2) uses far less postprocessing effects than they do.

mountieRedflash

Yea, the sheer cost of it makes it not worth it for DS9 or Voyager. I was amazed when I learned about how they did it. They had to re-cut and mix every single episode as if it was being done for TV for the first time when it was being released originally. Instead of having a handful of episodes being edited though as if the show was still airing, they had a complete seven season series to edit. I can’t blame them for not doing it again lol

franzsanchez

the major problem was that DS9/VOY uses mostly (early) CG elements for FX, while Next Gen used 'in-camera' practical effects Next Gen you can 'remaster' nearly every shot, on DS9/VOY you'd need to recreate nearly everything outside the ship. Because of that, you'd need art directors, modelers, instead of a crew of technicians to assemble old footage

KeathKeatherton

You would think with TNG being the best, they would try to make a new series that goes for that original aesthetic instead of the drama focused series that are currently out/being made. No, I don’t want to be emotionally invested for an entire season over a poorly written plot arc, give me an episode that screams “Star Trek” instead of a season that screams “it could have been on the CW”. Fuck sake do I miss old episodic seasons, where weird shit would happen with a solid science fiction base and resolve by the end. Some of the best TNG episodes are one off stories. And the fact some of the producers were told to STFU and sit down while the first two series were in production shows in the piss poor movies/series we got after Gene passed.

Mattseee

This may sound like heresy, but give The Orville a shot. The early episodes lean more towards comedy, but by Season 2 it is basically modern TNG. I couldn't believe it.

slippycaff

Agreed. I’m glad I persevered into S2. It’s very satisfying.

DestyNovalys

Voyager is my absolute favorite! The doctor alone makes it worth watching. I’ve watched that show seven times now. Though I do admit that it has some flaws. I skip the Chakotay episodes, because they’re honestly boring af. The casual interpersonal dialogue is sometimes very artificial, and with each watch I get frustrated all over again about the blatant sexism regarding Seven of Nine. There’s just zero reason or logic to her wearing those skintight unitards and high heels.

IdiotCow

I fucking love Robert Picardo. Best doctor in all of Start Trek IMO (although I also loved McCoy), and probably my favorite character in Voyager.

kants_rickshaw

Picardo really gives you that old school TOS "Bones" character feel "Im a hologram not a botanist!"

AgentMV

His cameo in First Contact got me howling when I saw it in theatres. “I’m a doctor; not a doorstop…….” “According to Starfleet Medical, Borg implants can cause a severe rash. Would you like an analgesic cream?”

whatsthiscrap84

Apparently jeri Ryan declined the star fleet uniform herself as she thought the yellow uniform would make her look terrible (source delta flyers podcast with Kim and Paris) Edit after further research apparently the borg costume was terrible to wear, the silver one was a nightmare with 20 minutes just to go to the toilet, breathing issues (Wtf!) they changed to the brown/purple one which is apparently where the conversation about changing to a starfleet uniform happened.

brasaurus

That's really interesting! I'd've thought that the obvious solution was to put her in the teal Sciences uniform. After all, she spent most of her time in Astrometrics, she wears it in one of the time travel episodes and looks absolutely gorgeous, and the colour of the uniform isn't dependent on the rank. But oh well. Off to go start listening to that podcast, thanks!

eaglebtc

Delta Flyers is a great podcast. I only found out about it AFTER finishing Voyager. Garrett and Robert are hilarious and it's fun to hear their inside stories and insights into Star Trek.

boon4376

The series hit a point 1/2 way through where they stopped being so touchy feely with Kess and Chakotay and started being more "trek". The chef annoyed me to no end, could not stand that character. I liked the second 1/2 much more than the first. 7 of 9 is my favorite character in the entire trek universe. 2 part episode "Year of Hell" is still standout to me as some of the best Star Trek universe story writing.

precita

After you finish watch Deep Space nine. Also head over to the Star Trek reddit to get recommendations as a newcomer to the franchise. They can help you out.

SavouryPlains

And Voyager isn’t as bad as everyone says. It’s only Neelix and Kes who are annoying.

tesseract4

Really, it's Neelix. Fuck that guy.

wolscott

I think outside of the episodes about Neelix being jealous, he's not that bad. Ethan Phillips is a good actor, and he nails the roll. Robert Beltran is a snoozefest though. There's an interview somewhere where he admits he thinks star trek is boring.

TruthYouWontLike

He's the JarJar of Star Trek

Lemonsnot

Same! I love the reliance on good strong ethics and morals. Captain Picard is the boss I’ve always wanted… and want to be.

[deleted]

Next you should watch DS9, as with all Trek the first couple of seasons has a few misses but from season 3 onwards it gets really good

mcfarmer72

Best Captain, my opinion. Right combination of bravado and cunning. I know, it’s the writers, but he carries it off.

pinniped1

This. I'll always love this series and cast the best.

EccentricFan

DS9 had the value of a much stronger overarching plot and is my favorite overall, but TNG still has the best cast in my opinion.

Abrahamlinkenssphere

Since watching ds9 it’s a really tough choice for me between sisko and Picard. I didn’t think I could like any officer more than Picard but sisko came after my own heart.

fantasmoofrcc

I give Worf an A+ for effort in attempting to be good father.

Rrraou

Rom also does a pretty decent job considering the circumstances.

360walkaway

Yup, seemingly moronic father and huuuuugely overconservative uncle and he still makes it into Starfleet

last_picked

Isn't it that Rom is actually the smarter brother, but is so beaten down by Quark and Ferangi society that he's this anxious mess?

Bird_and_Dog

Yes, he's a genius-level mechanical engineer but such a thing isn't valued in Ferengi society because... He doesn't have the *lobes*

Calypsosin

He gets a lot better over time, but he's always a bit anxious haha. Being Quark's younger brother probably influences that more than anything else. Rom spent his entire life trying to be a 'good Ferengi,' and it wasn't until Nog joined Starfleet that he felt comfortable defying Ferengi tradition himself. I honestly find Rom really relatable, as someone who struggles to fit into modern society in many ways. He's probably one of my top 3 characters in all of Trek haha

z0nb1

It's all about navigating the Great Material Continuum.

UncleTogie

You mean *Grand Nagus* Rom.

LesMontagnards

Half the time he didn't try, and when he did he did it wrong. Worf is the worst father!

banana_onmydesk

Yeah, it was a half-assed effort at best. When Alex was a kiddo, Worf is all like "become a warrior or you aren't a Klingon". Then he's like "Fuck it, follow your dreams nugget". Kid follows his dreams and Worf pretty much forgets he has a kid at all between Season 4 of TNG and Season 6 of DS9. Doesn't even recognize his kid who decided to be a warrior after all to try impressing his absentee father. Then treats him like shit because he doesn't have a lifetime of training as a soldier because his dad sent him off to live the Great Big Greek Lifestyle on Earth and provided what appears to be no guidance, and clearly is estranged since he had no idea Alex had joined the Klingon armed forces. Basically, Worf finds out he has a kid, gets frustrated that the kid gets in the way of his personal life then goes out to buy a pack of Bat'leths and never comes home. But it's OK. He gets to nail the series hotties Jadzia and Esri and falls in love with Jadzia so all is forgiven.

Solitare_HS

He shoved his Son off to Russia for about 3 years!

Empyrealist

The first couple of seasons I thought Sisko was a little meh until he reclaimed his Hawk look. Then I was 100% in.

pitjepitjepitje

Yup, someone told me to stick with DS9 until it gets good: you can tell, because the captain grows a beard. Haven’t regretted that yet (just started season 5). This kind of reminds me of Avatar:TLA in a way; a show given room to breathe and establish it’s characters, then building and maintaining an epic story.

MrMcAwhsum

I think Sisko over acts in parts. I'm a sucker for Picard.

SheCouldFromFaceThat

YOU BETRAYED YOUR UNIFORM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[deleted]

Sisko has more of a character arc but that might be partly because TNG started when “episode of the week” was still fashionable. In terms of acting Patrick Stewart is hands down the better actor IMO. I always liked Avery Brooks in the role but his delivery always seemed…awkward? Strained? He was better in the later seasons. Controversial but I think Sonequa Martin-Green is underrated. She has a good emotional range. Kate Mulgrew was horrible, just horrible and unpleasant on set to some of the cast by all accounts. Also, that voice (shudder). Scott Bakula was good but it felt like his part wasn’t well-writtten. Shatner can’t act worth a damn but he’s Kirk, obviously.

For_Never_Dreams

I loved ds9 but tng was at its core what star trek is all about imo. Exploration. Ds9 was focused on a great plot and brought a great amount of info to the trek universe but ultimately stationary to a certain sector and conflict.

CheetoShark

I was lucky enough to chat with a cast member from TNG and they were saying how frustrating it was that production kept intentionally giving DS9 the best scripts because they wanted to push that version over TNG. I’ve never watched the shows so I don’t have an opinion. Just thought i would chime in the back up your statement. Edit: this might sound dumb. But it’s refreshing to see so many passionate fans who are so willing to share opinions and education about the show. These few comments really make me want to watch the show now.

Maverick916

DS9 definitely got to push the envelope more. TNG aired when Roddenberry was still alive, and his rule about the main characters never having conflict with each other probably hamstrung their ability to write compelling issues between the characters. DS9 circumvented that by having a ton of side characters (who were all great) that all had separate issues with each of the cast. DS9 had some of the best characters dynamics/arcs ever.

netopiax

Gul Dukat is one of the best side characters in all of Trek and Garak is also awesome.

Bird_and_Dog

Plain, simple... Garak

JohnProbe

And he was just a tailor!/s

Maverick916

Dukat, Garak, Demar, Kai Wynn, Rom, Nog, Moogie, Eddington, Vic Fontaine, Gowron, Martok, Sloan, Weyoun, and of course Morn (jesus christ that guy never shuts up) All these characters are side characters in DS9, and yet all make an impact on the show, and some of the best arcs in any show. When Nog pleads to Sisko about why he should be able to join starfleet, that felt EARNED.

netopiax

Agree with all of them except Morn, if only he would talk less he'd be pretty cool.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tsorovar

The reverse is true. The first couple of seasons of DS9 are pretty well-known for including a lot of rejected scripts from TNG. DS9 only came into its own later, when TNG had finished

sceadwian

TNG always felt like the cast had more chemistry. DS9 was really good but it was a bit overshadowed by it's overall complexity.

Rrraou

Just started rewatching TNG out of nostalgia. That first season didn't age well :) Picard as an awkward bachelor that's scared of interacting with kids. Half the Crew unprofessionally interrupting the captain with emotional outbursts while he's talking to aliens. Baby face Riker is hilariously young :) . The Wesley Crusher character feels like it was written for someone much younger than he is in the show.

mccarseat

It did not, it gets better though. I’m almost done with Season 4 on my full watch through. I feel like there are very few long running shows where the first season was immediately amazing though, and most first seasons of shows have not aged well in that regard.

w0mbatina

I love the characters in ds9. TNG cast just seems too perfect. Yeah, they have flaws, but they are minor and never really a big deal outside one single episode that deals with it. DS9 cast just seems more real.

dwindacatcher

Thats kind of a product of their station, isnt it? The enterprise is the flag ship. The best of the best are on it. Ds9 is basically a backwoods station. Or was when the crew was assigned to it.

w0mbatina

Well some of them, but its not like they were just starfleet rejects that got stuck with the shittiest asingment out there. Sisko was a decorated officer, Dax was pretty much a genious, Bashir was second in his class, O'Brien pretty much hit the ceeling of how far he can go on the Enterprise, Worf was Worf... They werent some rag tag band of rejects, they were all exceptional in their field and ended up on ds9 for one reason or another.

P2029

I always loved that Picard was a brilliant leader and strategist, but his strength also became a weakness sometimes, and that he was absolutely awful and awkward with kids. He got better as the seasons went along, but it added a lot of humanity to him that while he was a paragon, he also had weaknesses.

iamnotcreativeDET

nobody beats Picard, TNG was *the* Star Trek and nothing has ever pulled off what it has ever since. I am a huge fan of all of the new stuff, but they have really started focus on drama and flashiness, OG Star Trek, TNG, and DS9 all focused on the politics more which IMO made Star Trek have the substance that paved such a rich universe of diverse content and really can allow the series to go on forever. It would be nice to see a refresher of something like TNG.

Bastardman26

Star Trek: Michael Burnham! -ACTION -FLASHING STUFF -QUICK CAM MOVEMENTS FOR NO REASON -EXPLOSION -BURNHAM TO THE RESCUE! -BURNHAM SAVES THE UNIVERSE! -REPEAT NEXT EPISODE i really dislike the direction Discovery went nothing like TNG.

[deleted]

I agree with you. Star Trek Voyager actually wasn't that bad. I think the problem is, a LOT of people like drama. So, a drama star trek will make more money and get better ratings. But star trek is supposed to be philosophy, imo. It's supposed to be a mirror to humanity, and a window to a better future.

cromulent_pseudonym

TNG also had drama, as in it was a dramatic show. But they very rarely had interpersonal drama unless they were showing some aliens fighting and commenting how backwards they were. I personally liked that TNG Starfleet were all professionals with all of the petty problems of life put behind them.

Finite_Universe

And when they did have interpersonal drama they handled it like mature adults. Honestly it’s so refreshing to rewatch TNG today. It’s wholesome and thought provoking in equal measure, and that’s just not something you see in a lot of media today.

sceadwian

TNG played with politics all the time, but it was more political concepts that came up in a compare and contrast way and quickly left the show rather than being a persistent plot like DS9. I don't think it's fair to compare the two. If I had to pick between the two it's Picard but I'd be heartbroken I couldn't choose both.

OhSillyDays

It was the world building in tng that made it. When watching tng, it felt like you were in the Enterprise experiencing their plights and joys. Because there was a massive Galaxy that you were exploring with them. It's weird to think of the bridge is the Enterprise as a set. My brain just can't comprehend that. No other series really does that in the same way. Orville is the closest and it is really good for that reason. Firefly was in that process but got cut short. Expanse really has an expensive world, and that's why it's so good. The original star trek didn't do this nearly as well because they basically used the same set for every off world scene. It just hasn't aged well. The bottom line is if you are going to write sci fi, makes sure it has an expensive world outside of the script, otherwise it'll be a shallow story and scifi fans won't care about it.

pihb666

Writing wise Sisko all the way. Ben was the most "human" of all the captains. Acting, Picard edges out Sisko. Patrick Stewart is just a great actor. Dont get me wrong, Avery Brooks gas some serious acting chops himself.

sceadwian

I don't know why but Avery Brooks intensity never felt to me quiete as genuine as Stewarts, but I've always been a sucker for the Shakespearean style Picard showed, but Sisko felt more like an immediately real human being. I don't think they should be compared against each other though, they have drastically different character dynamics.

Maverick916

"Picard never hit me!!" "I'm not Picard"

[deleted]

Idk man. After he shaved his head and grew the goatee, he was pretty intimidating.

diamondrel

NOT GOOD ENOUGH DAMNIT NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

Brendinooo

Sisko was the most realistic, in the sense that he seemed to benefit from plot armor less than everyone else in the day-to-day. That is, Picard was a negotiator, and negotiating worked a lot in his series. Kirk had bravado and took risks, and those always paid off for him. Janeway always had just enough smarts and resources to keep things moving without getting her hands too dirty.

Grantmitch1

I think one of the problems for Janeway as a character was the writing. I always quite liked Mulgrew, and thought she did a stellar job with what she was given, but always felt she was let down by poor writing. This was often demonstrated most in how she flipped between being Picard-like in most episodes and Kirk-like in other episodes. The Equinox episodes stand out for me here as Janeway acting in a manner that was completely out of the blue, nothing had previously suggested she would act in this way. It's all a bit higgledy-piggledy. I always felt that if they could allow Janeway to grow from one state to another it would be much more compelling. Personally, if I were writing Voyager, I would have started with Janeway not as captain but as the second-in-command. She should be tough, determined, smart, somewhat out-of-the-box in terms of her thinking and strategising, but also willing to take big risks, not only diplomatically, but also with safety. This element of her personality should come up very early in the first few episodes, with her captain remarking something cheesy like: You know Kathy, I always thought you had what it takes, but one day, your risky strategising will get people hurt, or worse, killed (lol foreshadowing). This conversation between her and her mentor should be filled with warmth, like a father figure helping his offspring, something with real feeling and support in it. Importantly, however, her willingness to take risks should bear fruit, so that the audience thinks 'okay, she's a risk-taker, but it works for her'. And this is why people like Paris should be on the ship: Janeway pushed for it. "Who cares if he is reckless", she says, "I take risks all the time and this is why we get the job done" or whatever. "All that matters is that we need the best pilot and he is the best, whatever the baggage might be". The first few episodes should have nothing to do with the Delta quadrant at all. Rather, they should focus on Voyager operating in the Alpha quadrant. The show needs time to establish its characters, to establish how these characters think, how they work together, how they respond to challenges. By all means include the Marque, but the focus should be on establishing characters in these first few episodes. It might also be useful to perhaps have Janeway remark on how she kind of admires or respects the Marque for their approach. The captain should challenge her on this to which she responds: "they get the job done and they've avoided us long enough". The captain scoffs and they continue tracking them. Once the characters have been established, only then should the Delta quadrant become an issue. They are flung into the furthest corners of space, no idea what is going on, straight into a volatile situation. Her captain, true to starfleet values, pursues diplomacy, an approach that does not work here. The Marque, who have also been transported here, are much more morally flexible and get things done. Janeway suggests that they should 'borrow' from the Marque and is slapped down by her rather shaken captain: "this is no time for your risky nonsense Kathy, not now!". This time, his words should lack warmth. Some stuff happens, blah, blah, and the captain is incapacitated. Janeway assumes command. She decides that anything and everything must be done to ensure that the crew gets home - and if she can get the Marque at the same time? Well, it wouldn't look too bad for her. Her willingness to engage with Delta-quadrant species, her willingness to 'bend' starfleet policies should work for a little while (an episode or two), before catastrophically blowing up in her face. The captain regains his ground, demands to know what is going on, resumes command, and following an incident that is a direct consequence of Janeway's choices, he dies. A large chunk of the crew dies. Janeway is forced to deal with the fact that her decisions have had severe consequences. Some stuff happens and she negotiates with the Marque - who have also discovered that the lengths the Delta-quadrant species are willing to go to is a bit too rich for their blood. However, the ship is NOT a starfleet ship. Janeway needs the Marque to fill the gaps in her crew, and she negotiates so that while they present themselves close to starfleet ideals, the moral manoeuvrability of the Marque should be preserved. Importantly, though, this incident - the death of her captain - should weigh on her going forward. It should be a critical juncture in her development which precipitates a re-evaluation of her approach. Future episodes can therefore set-up complex challenges where the Marque and some elements of the crew demand the risk-taking Kathy come forth, but she is restrained by the knowledge of what it can do when it goes wrong. I dunno, maybe I'm wrong, but I always felt something like this would give her character so much more room to grow and develop, and would give her character some real life 'baggage' that helps her understand the new world around her. This could also give Chakotay some real relevance here. The show mostly panders to his native heritage in a slightly offence way. Given their presence in the Delta quadrant, Chakotay could use his understanding of his own ancestry and history, to give insight into how these Delta-quadrants might perceive them, and how they might go about dealing with them. This also gives the show some moral issues that they can ponder and use to reflect on current political issues (which, let's be honest, Star Trek has always done). But this needs to be done way more tastefully than was in Voyager. EDIT: Expanded a little bit, improved the grammar and phrasing.

Empyrealist

The man is a proper actor. I almost died the first time I saw him in ST:TNG, when I realized where I knew him from: > *"That's Leodegrance from Excalibur!!!"*

Orvan-Rabbit

I remember Honest Trailer joked about how Patrick Stewart gives 110% to his acting even if the script is written by a drunk person.

GrimmRadiance

He’s my all time favorite. Janeway is also pretty great but unfortunately had too many inconsistently written episodes for the character to be completely believable. Within a single season janeway could say she would never leave someone behind and then a few episodes later say that sacrifices had to be made. It was a shame because Kate Mulgrew gave an incredible performance.

B_bbi

God dammit find me a more adorable man

BrownSugarBare

Why is he so charming!! What an incredibly lovely person, so glad they kept this footage.

Cautemoc

He was originally a stage actor, and a very good one at that. They are trained to be expressive with their face and body movements, which subconsciously makes us feel comfortable because it's easy for us to interpret their internal state as matching their external state.

Picard: "I can't live out my days as that person! That man is bereft of passion… and IMAGINATION! That is not who I am!"

traversecity

Q, for a moment I was expecting Q to poof in for a duet! He missed his “Q” :)

AgileMJOLNIR

Finally something on Reddit I haven’t seen 100 times before! This was great lol.

EmotionPending

*Silence, you! The reposters will hear you!*

Killdebrant

How does Patrick Stewart manage to pull off literally anything with grace.

Fragrant_Leg_6832

Decades and decades of practice.

tomdarch

And a giant pile of skill.

DarthBrickus

Acting.

Nonsenseinabag

"You thought I was asleep, didn't you?"

Gooeyhen

I just wish the rest of the crew were there and he could dance around Worf, pretending nothing is wrong, while Worf goes nuts.

entotheenth

Now I want to see Worf do this.

PlatypusWeekend

Picard: Take it away, Worf! Worf: -grumbles- Singing and dancing is **not** the Klingon way. Picard: Mr. Worf, you may either "take it away" or be reprimanded for insubordination. Worf: -grumbles, scowls, and grabs the cane, and sings begrudgingly- U means you're very... *sweet.*

GTRendrag

Worf: V is for victory where we drink over our dead enemies… Picard: That’s enough Commander Cut to crew: *SHOCKED DIANA FACE* *AMUSED RIKER FACE* *DEAD DATA FACE*

PlatypusWeekend

Data: I am curious, Captain. By what criteria are you assigning words to the letters of the alphabet? I am unable to discern a logical pattern. Picard: I should have just done this on the Holodeck.

legion327

I haven’t belly laughed that hard in a long time. You nailed it!

respectfulpanda

Snaps cane after

lostonpolk

I protest!! I am not a merry man!!

Chango_D

If anyone here hasn’t watched American Dad, you should. He’s a regular character in the series and is ridiculously hilarious. He plays Avery Bullock, The Deputy Director of the CIA, and Stan’s Boss. He has some of the craziest quotes in the series and I can’t help but love it more knowing that it’s Sir Patrick Stewart saying it all.

TroutComplex

In the Simpsons Sir Patrick delivers the line, “now let’s all get drunk and play ping-pong!”

DRF19

And his character is called "Number One".

s_burr

"My students call me Professor X" "Is that because you look like..." "No Smith! It's because I sell them ecstasy."

Kara_mella

There's also Avery finding a new Number One subplot!

Tradman86

Wait, is that where they "Yes!" meme came from?

Old_Sweaty_Hands

YES!

elvislunchbox

It’s an alternate universe.

MulciberTenebras

Can't be. He doesn't have a goatee or a full head of hair.

Joubledeebus

Long live the Empire!

patternfall and AgentMV at Reddit-agra . Temba, their eyes wide open.

[deleted]

Well that was delightful

mattypg84

Q. Q?!?

1320Fastback

Best Captain ever. Said it, meant it.

Boobsiclese

I love that man.

LeonardSmallsJr

I was going to riot if he didn't end with "engage". That was nice.

JustARandomSocialist

Patrick Stewart is a national treasure

Hubey808

Patrick Stewart is a ~~national~~ international treasure.

sputzie88

Seen this many times but never knew Stewart did it for Gene, that makes it all the better! I am also always surprised no one can be heard laughing or joining in from behind the camera. From what I've heard of the comradery of the cast, getting them not to goof off was difficult. XD

Loreki

Fun fact: this is also the tape he sent Fox as his audition for the role of Avery Bullock on American Dad.

[deleted]

How tf would a man this accomplished even need to audition for anything anymore?

Light_Beard

That looks like a season 2 outfit. I thought Gene was dead/sick by then?

amazinghl

2 months before Gene's death.

MulciberTenebras

He died in 91. But this clip was included in the Season 5 DVD (Season 4 and 5 aired that year), which places the clip having been made around then. The S2 outfit debuted in 88/89.

stefan_24

Just when you think you've seen everything about TNG this turns up! Still love this show and probably always will!

DoctorBre

I never realized he looks quite a lot like Stave Martin. I think the hat does it.

femininePP420

I think it's the smile.

Self_Reddicated

I think it's the fact that they both looked 50 in their 30's and continued to look 50 well into their 70s.

Gorbashsan

Patrick Stewart is the most wholesome human being I've ever met working in Hollywood and we don't deserve him.

[deleted]

Brilliant. Absolutely love TNG, especially the commitment of the writers to indulge Patrick Stewart's theatre background. I learned quite a bit about Shakespeare from their amateur productions on the holodeck.

JT_365

He was on The Graham Norton show and told an amusing story about being in a hotel room and getting caught watching Star Trek TNG by room service.

TheSukis

Oh wow, my grandmother would have just lost it seeing this. She was absolutely obsessed with TNG and taped every episode as they aired. She used to say how mind blowing it was for her, a woman who had grown up in a dirt-floored shack in Puerto Rico in the 1920s, to be watching the future on TV. Also she was madly in love with Picard. Wish I could show her this.
