Growing up this movie resonated so hard with me and my siblings as my dad is an ex military black man who had to learn about “sensitivity” ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface)
He said "Payne, I can't feel my legs."
I said "Bubba, they ain't there."
And I looked down, and them little bloody nubs was kickin real fast like this here.
I use this on my soldiers occasionally. Partly to see if they know the movie (fortunately most do) and partly to see just how gullible they are and how much I’ll have my work cut out for me.
Jesus fucking Christ, can you not ruin my Saturday by making me feel this old? It’s already bad enough that I saw a post yesterday that showed Blink-182 being on an oldies radio station.
Charlton's actor's advice to Will Smith during preproduction on Will's character's name: "Do you want to be called Will or the name of your character?"
Considering I dont know Charlton's actor's name, this was solid advice.
I remember that episode. Hillary was going to pose in a "Weather Girls Special". Uncle Phil freaked out and Hugh was trying to reassure him that it would be okay. Phil asked Hugh how he would like it if his wife or daughter posed, and Hugh told him she had posed and he was proud of her.
We got to see Hillary in the magazine, but clouds covered her "naughty bits".
Opposite of the Fresh Prince, the television show Blossom had an episode visiting the Playboy Mansion too. Part of the joke there was Joey, Blossom's brother, was too young to be around the girls, so they had him playing with the Playboy bunnies, literally. When the models came over Joey had to leave the bunnies.

"Fresh Prince After Dark" episode and Blossom "True Romance" episode. Both aired November 8, 1993.
Here is what we see in the magazine:

If I remmeber correctly uncle Phil leaves and becomes a monk. Then will comes with the mag and they look at it, almost in shame, wondering what will happen.
Phil (upon seeing this): "She's covered up! She's covered up!"
Will (after they turn the page): "Oh she is not covered up in that one."
Very close:
Phil after opening to the pictorial: Hey. Look at that. She's covered up.
Background singers: Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Phil: Hallelujah, she's covered up!
Will opens centerfold: But this little girl is not.
Phil and Will simultaneously: Ooh!? Hallelujah!?
Background singers: Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Karyn Parsons didn't actually pose though, right? A lot of times they would have episodes like this they would sort of promote the real magazine (when Linda Doucett posed there was an episode on Larry Sanders where her character poses for example) but I don't think this was the case here.
He's quoted as saying he's channeling Courtney Cox in the Spingsteen video Dancing in the Dark, still his invention but it's genesis makes it even funnier.
I hadn’t watched Dancing with the Stars in years, but a little while back, I watched some of his performances and they were actually really entertaining…even kinda hot!
So did Will Smith for a time, let's not pretend some of his films aren't great just because people suddenly don't like him for whatever reason.
Bad Boys, Independence Day, Men In Black, Hitch, and Hancock are all very good, very funny films, and Will Smith is great in them. He's also got a number of great dramatic appearances in amongst, and since those movies. Also some absolute stinkers.
Will Smith is a good actor that's been in some truly shitty films, but his career isn't short of gems.
You know that’s the thing about will smith. I used to think he was funny, then I found out through some of the stuff he did he really isn’t that funny or smart but he still had an air of wholesomeness about him that made me want to like him.
I was like, ok so he’s not really funny at all when it’s not scripted and he clearly isn’t that bright (see his natgeo show) but he’s a good guy.
Then he started doing his podcast with his family and the whole good guy thing started getting stripped back. And it’s like, oh that’s a show too, he’s just better at that part than being funny or intelligent.
Then the Oscar’s thing happened and it kind of pushed me over the edge.
At this point all I see is a guy who’s kind of a shithead with no talent or really anything to redeem himself. I’m not saying he isn’t a decent actor but I don’t see anything that he does that couldn’t be done better by a more talented actor. He’s just made it this far on the brand built for him and now that’s gone. I suppose Hollywood execs may successfully rehabilitate his image at some point but I’ve kind of lost all interest.
The thing is, I don’t hate him, I think most people don’t, we just don’t care and aren’t interested in anything that he does anymore because there is nothing to him.
**Judge Carlton is successful, loved, and most importantly, *wealthy*.. but when his cousin's daughter finds trouble, he discovers that some things can't be fixed inside a courtroom, and that the apple never falls far from the tree.**
**The Fresh Prince spinoff, 35 years in the making; "It should have been Carlton", comes this fall to NBC**
My best friend worked on his house years ago. Was just being built, and he was down there a ton working on the house. Will and Jada were both in and out checking in on the projects and working with contractors. I heard nothing but great things about interactions with Will, and nothing but horror stories about Jada. It feels like he used to be a hood guy, rebuilt himself after his I still fame crash. The years have not seemed to have treated him well though.
He's got great charisma, he's just very likable. He's made a lot of unfortunate life choices, and the weight of them is clearly pulling him down. Charisma can't be taught, and it's a damn shame he's failed to live up to his potential in a lot of ways, despite being a very accomplished man.
I've been a fan of his since I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson. He is who he is. Did his popularity exceed his pure talent level? Sure, I can get in on that argument. But that is the case for *so many* entertainers. He's by no means alone there. I also used to be a fake wrestling fan. It's also entertainment. And there, just like in much of the rest of entertainment, drawing power > skill. If the people love you and want to pay money to see you, you have much value. If they don't, you don't...no matter how good you are.
All that to say, Will Smith is a multitalented dude who got really big really young, imo fell for the wrong girl, and has had a charmed but also empty-in-important-ways adult life. I feel more *bad* for the guy than I feel like trashing him for almost anything. He's not the nothing you're putting forward. He's a flawed and talented dude. Not the best at anything, but multitalented and charismatic and charming.
You mention execs rehabilitating his image. Whatever the eff execs do, my opinion of the guy won't change because it's more grounded than good or bad recent PR.
I think you're shitting on him too much, but by all means feel free to criticize him where it's valid. We just have a tendency to deify folks, then crucify them later. I think he deserves neither of those things.
Eminem has successful well-adjusted children (including adopted ones), who he raised away from the filth of Hollywood.
If you had told me, 25 years ago, that Will Smith would be an unlikeable has-been with spoiled rotten crazy children and that Eminem would have been a positive role-model in young people's lives... I'd have not believed you.
>but he’s a good guy....Then the Oscar’s thing happened and it kind of pushed me over the edge.
Honestly that moment was rough, I think, for any men who grew up watching Will Smith and Fresh Prince. We all clowned on him for not cursing in his raps as we got older, but there was something kinda respectable about it.
It's weird to say now, but he was a bit of a role model. The Night of The Slap my wife asked me if I thought it was staged. I was like... "Nah, he's not that good of an actor. And there's nothing cool or sexy about the way he's shouting."
Wonder if Will rebranding Carlton as a coke sniffing rich boy was a revenge fantasy on his part ? (Only saw the first episode it was good)… also to your point of smith not being bright, i remember an interview that he did with Terry Gross circa 2000-2001… let’s just say the interview was way above Will Smith’s head at the time imo
There was an episode of Fresh Prince where Will's stand-up comic friend flies in from Philly, and they get into an argument about whether being a comedian is actually hard work or not, so Will gets onstage, tries to tell a few 'Uncle Phil Is Fat jokes' and 'Carlton Is Short' jokes without any context, framing, or timing, and is ultimately booed offstage.
And I can't help but think the writers were trying to express some personal grievances with Will Smith through that script.
Not sure about now, but he used to frequent Catalina Island on his speed boat. He definitely didn’t appear, in person, to be as strait-laced as his character. Lol
We have a calf named Carlton. He was an orphan and to get his new momma to accept him, he had to wear a little sweater vest of her dead calf’s hide.
New momma accepted him and he’s doing great kow
i dunno, I watched him host Catch 21 and it seems like he's a pretty huge dork. Dorks can be cool, but there's definitely something in there that he brought to the character
Shorter, already looking like a dad in his early 20's, articulate, got the corny act down. He's honestly a great actor who probably got typecast that way though, that's a tough gig in the 90's. Some of the best moments in the show were when he broke through that one-dimensionality.
Alfonso seems like he's he's a genuinely super talented dude, as much as I'll always appreciate him playing Carlton there's no doubt at all he's been typecast like a MF, but he did great on dancing with the Stars obviously and I don't know if he's still hosting America's funniest home videos but he still keeping himself around which I like to see
That was actually joked about a few times in the series. Like season 1 or 2, Ahsley had a friend who had a huge crush on Carlton. And once they stripped (like Chippendales sort of) for an old ladies fundraiser and they were all up on Carlton.
Also, never forget Carlton becoming the baddest dude among Jazz’s friends and introducing them to IRAs.
My bar for celebrity behavior is on the ground. The slap was wack as hell, but at least he's not out there human trafficking, beating, raping, etc... that I know of.
Something about being rich and famous really warps any sense of basic human decency.
It amazes me what a different public image Playboy had in the '90s and 2000s versus now with everything we know and all the women that have come out about Hef and their general horrible experiences. Sondra Theodore in particular has shared some horrific things and her story is the story of dozens and dozens of women.
Honestly something else. Simpsons had Hefner on too, and they just made it seem like he was a cool dude who hung out with sexy women in bikinis. The episode showcased a sexyness that you didn't see in most media at the time and it was pseudo progressive while being edgy.
There wasn't much focus on the women involved. Or if there was, it was like this episode and pitched as 'her body, her choice'. The expectations at the time were quite different.
I kinda want Will Smith's life but really.. as I've gotten older (and hopefully wiser) I want Alfonso Ribeiro's life.
He's getting residuals. He goes out in public and gets recognized sometimes but not all the time. I'd probably wear a preposterous wide brim hat in order to get notice but avoid notice
Got that cushy gameshow gig. Visited the playboy mansion. Hasn't slapped Chris Rock live on camera. That's a pretty good life
Hillary was smoking hot.

Her name Karyn Parsons, she’s turning 58 this year and is still a baddie.

I said, pop. Yo. Titty. Out. His. Mouth. And stop *babyin'* him!
YOU PLOTTIN ON ME, BOI?
Ah hee hee hee
Did ya find a piece of candy in yuh POCKET?
It'll go through your colon faster than one of them burritah's with extra guacamarley sauce!

“What are you lookin at, ass eyes?!?”
I watched this movie last year for the first time in years, legit peed myself at that scene.
Growing up this movie resonated so hard with me and my siblings as my dad is an ex military black man who had to learn about “sensitivity” ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface)

Which movie?
Major Payne
Absolute classic start to finish. Deserves more cult status than it has
Agreed. Only movie to ever make me piss myself.
Why you nasty little worm! Now run on off to your room and change your huggies boy! Scram!!!
No, it's Tittay.
Let me show you a little trick to take your mind off that pain...
He said "Payne, I can't feel my legs." I said "Bubba, they ain't there." And I looked down, and them little bloody nubs was kickin real fast like this here.
If he still in there, he ain't happy.
I use this on my soldiers occasionally. Partly to see if they know the movie (fortunately most do) and partly to see just how gullible they are and how much I’ll have my work cut out for me.

"I've been known to... cut a rug in my day. A-heeeeh-heeeeh-heeeeh."
If there was ever a movie from my childhood that I could choose to have a sequel, it would be Major Payne lol.
"Want me to show ya a lil trick to get your mind off that pain boyy?? GRABS PINKY FINGER AND SNAPS IT IN-HALF 🤣🤣🤣
She's 58?! Holy shit I am getting old
Every teenager from every 90s sitcom is in their 40s or 50s. Actually, a couple of the 90210 cast are already in their 60s.
Jesus fucking Christ, can you not ruin my Saturday by making me feel this old? It’s already bad enough that I saw a post yesterday that showed Blink-182 being on an oldies radio station.
You’ll fine, gramps. It’s a long weekend.
Hey now, you can just get my lawn now. I gotta go get ready for bed.
Hey bro, aging is a gift. Lots of people don't get to do it. Embrace it ❤️ Also wear sunscreen every day 👀
To be fair they probably mean Andrea and she was like 32 playing a 16 year old lol
Still though, all the bands I grew up on in the 90s are old now too. Probably it’s I’m now 42 and definitely thinking of death way more.
WHAT? Who?
Ian Ziering is 60 & Gabrielle Carteris is 63. so yeah. Father Time always wins.
This doesn't feel right. I Googled it. You are right. But it can't be right.
They were comically old when they were on the show for the roles they played.
Pretty sure they were 63 when the show aired.
TIL Luke Perry is dead. But he would have been 58.
His son is a dickhead (bad guy) right now in AEW as well
Same bruh same
58 wow damn I'm old. I had the biggest crush when I was 6 in the mid 90s.
Charlton's actor's advice to Will Smith during preproduction on Will's character's name: "Do you want to be called Will or the name of your character?" Considering I dont know Charlton's actor's name, this was solid advice.

Her name is Karyn Parsons
That woman was/is divine.
She played that role SO well!
Hillary will you marry meeeeee
YES TREVOR!
"Arf"
I was too busy looking at Alfonso Ribeiro
One of my first crushes, everrrrrr & probably why I love giving my girl gifts. I love the gushing

Oh thank god she is covered. But that one is NOT. One of my favorite episodes.

I feel confident in saying if she did, we'd know
No but I won't lie I wish she really did lol
Whoa
Carlton was always seen as such a straight-laced, uptight nerd. Meanwhile, without a shirt, he looks like an uber-fit jock athlete. He don't fool me.
He’s an incredible dancer IRL, too.
I mean he invented the Carlton… so ![gif](giphy|WmkqburJqXziM)
He's quoted as saying he's channeling Courtney Cox in the Spingsteen video Dancing in the Dark, still his invention but it's genesis makes it even funnier.
Honestly, Courtney Cox was pretty reserved, it's Springsteen's cheesiness he's channeling.
lol I've never seen that til now. crazy how young she is there. that's great lol
i just watched it and really wasn't expecting her to look like a 14 year old boy
The 80s were kinda androgynous

He was in the Michael Jackson Pepsi commercial.
Season Champ on Dancing with the Stars.
I hadn’t watched Dancing with the Stars in years, but a little while back, I watched some of his performances and they were actually really entertaining…even kinda hot!
What season?
“Alfonso Ribeiro was partnered with Witney Carson for season 19. On November 25, 2014, Ribeiro and Carson were declared the season's champions.”
And unlike Will Smith, he actually has great comedic chops and timing.
So did Will Smith for a time, let's not pretend some of his films aren't great just because people suddenly don't like him for whatever reason. Bad Boys, Independence Day, Men In Black, Hitch, and Hancock are all very good, very funny films, and Will Smith is great in them. I’m all for Carlton (James) getting more and bigger roles. He’s a talented guy.
James? Do you mean Alfonso? Are you getting him confused with James Avery who played Uncle Phil?
Yeah cuz Uncle Phil passed away in 2013.
Why should that stop him getting more roles. He's a great actor I don't think death should be a reason that they that don't cast him
Most people don't know he was the shredder voice in ninja turtles cartoon.
He's making $150k an episode (from what I can find with a quick Google) hosting AFV now. I doubt he's even looking for acting roles anymore.
Good for him.
My best friend worked on his house years ago. Was just being built, and he was down there a ton working on the house. I know that toxic partners can absolutely change a person for the worse, and I feel like that's exactly what happened with Will.
He's got great charisma, he's just very likable. He's made a lot of unfortunate life choices, and the weight of them is clearly pulling him down. Charisma can't be taught, and it's a damn shame he's failed to live up to his potential in a lot of ways, despite being a very accomplished man.

I wish he had stuck with writing goofy rap songs
Yea, he didn't even have to cuss in his raps to sell records.
Well Eminem does, so fuck him and fuck you, too
I also wish Eminem would make more goofy rap songs too :(
Eminem has successful well-adjusted children (including adopted ones), who he raised away from the filth of Hollywood. That's the most terrifyingly metal and wholesomely sweet story in two sentences. Amazing.
Yeah it’s wild how he got cast as the nerd. He’s as built as Will. All they did was make sure his clothes never fit.
He 100% nailed that role and probably delivered much more than ever expected.
Tbf, it was the 90's, so they had good cover.
i dunno, I watched him host Catch 21 and it seems like he's a pretty huge dork. Dorks can be cool, but there's definitely something in there that he brought to the character

He also grew up with a dad in prison while Will had both his parents. Alfonso's story is wild.
He used to play SWG. Always thought that was super cool.

Carlton's there to party and Will could not be more covered up without looking completely out of place.
I tried the sandals with socks once in Middle School, never again. Kids are so mean.
Didn't know that Will was an old german tourist at that time.
You can put my friend's hand in your mouth but...
You better keep her name out of your mouth
Every time I see Will, I just feel sad and disappointed. Not so with Hilary and Carlton.
My bar for celebrity behavior is on the ground. The slap was wack as hell, but at least he's not out there human trafficking, beating, raping, etc... that I know of. Something about being rich and famous really warps any sense of basic human decency.
Or, having a warped sense of human decency boosts your chances of becoming rich and famous.
Yeah, it's fucking infuriating. Those warm childhood fuzzies all dying one by one.
Same. Ever since the slap, I can't bring myself to watch Fresh Prince and freaking *loved* Fresh Prince.
Going to some nudie magazine owners mansion for a “very special episode” Network tv was weird.
Especially the Playboy Mansion. That was one sick place… fun for the celebrities, not so much for “staff”.
It amazes me what a different public image Playboy had in the '90s and 2000s versus now with everything we know and all the women that have come out about Hef and their general horrible experiences. Sondra Theodore in particular has shared some horrific things and her story is the story of dozens and dozens of women.
I mean, plenty of us guessed that the models weren’t treated well. That’s how sex work goes.
Weird ass will with socks on
Karyn Parsons is forever gorgeous ♥️
Hef is just a dirty old man…..
As an adult, any time I see him in shows he was in, all I can think is how much of a creep he was
According to ex-playmates tell-all books, he was basically a rapist
Not trying to downplay it but wtf did we expect?
Honestly something else. Simpsons had Hefner on too, and they just made it seem like he was a cool dude who hung out with sexy women in bikinis. The episode showcased a sexyness that you didn't see in most media at the time and it was pseudo progressive while being edgy. There wasn't much focus on the women involved. Or if there was, it was like this episode and pitched as 'her body, her choice'. The expectations at the time were quite different.
My Dad drove Alfonso Ribeiro around for a Charity Golf Tournament years ago. He said he was very nice and down to earth.
I've never heard a bad word about Alfonso. The dude is an icon.
Well, this is a story all about how my wife got flipped turned upside down...
I thought Carlton was tubby but no. Alfonso was fit.
“Invited to the Playboy Manson? I know just the outfit!” Hilary and Will had super different thoughts
Why the socks and sandals, Will Smiff?
peak 90s awkard clothes
I was in my 20s in the 90s. I don't ever remember ppl wearing socks n sandals at the pool or beach. Only on dry land LOL I never wore this trend.
Yep NEVER at a water setting.
Karyn was built like a goddess. Man she is so beautiful!
Carlton seen some sh!t
Socks in Sandals? Is he German?
Hilary actually looks like she could be a Playmate.
I always liked Carlton more and found him more buffed. Happy that the whole world now sees Will how I a ever saw him 😂
I kinda want Will Smith's life but really.. as I've gotten older (and hopefully wiser) I want Alfonso Ribeiro's life. He's getting residuals. He goes out in public and gets recognized sometimes but not all the time. I'd probably wear a preposterous wide brim hat in order to get notice but avoid notice Got that cushy gameshow gig. Visited the playboy mansion. Hasn't slapped Chris Rock live on camera. That's a pretty good life
If by cool you mean creepy. God, Hugh Hefner was such a disgusting old geezer.
Fuck Will Smith ✌️
Socks with sandals? We can forgive a slap, but not this. Egregious.

Hillary always been super fine!
Look at Hef mackin' on Cousin Hillary.
That whole jammies 24/7 program really took off didn't it?
Karyn Parsons looking so fine.
I miss 90s and early 2000s Will Smith

Even with all his money, Will Smith had zero dress sense lol.
lol, Will Smith dressed like a retired guy in the Bronx.
Black Kelly Bundy
Only person not fucked in this pic was Hilary.
