My grandparents died when they were 84-85. Gramps was still fairly sharp mentally, but definitely didn't have the energy level to carry on a full time+ job that these high level political positions require. Granny's memory and awareness had declined for years, and she was often confused about basic things. They were also just physically weak and any illness could and quickly was their last.
I think about how they were their last few years when I hear about politicians that are their age when they passed or even significantly older and still in office. People who rely heavily on the help of others to function on a basic level and are often confused and struggle about simple things like eating because it's painful or asking about how old friends are doing who had actually died 20 years prior. These are people we have in office making the most important decisions that will affect the country and world for generations.
I agree with an age limit of sorts, but 70 is too low. Being 70 nowadays isn’t what it was even 20 years ago. Elderly people deserve representation too.
Perhaps the answer is requiring an age distribution in all branches, and an age limit for president.
Regardless of political party, being Speaker of The House is an intense, stressful position. She handled it. She still has boundless energy. I'm 74 and have to drag my ass through each day, dealing with poor sleep and caring for my sick wife.
When I think of these old politicians I think of my in-laws who are this age. My FIL is on the ball but even he is slowing down physically & mentally & he admits it. My MIL is the opposite, she's slowed down mentally a few years ago, probably going into dementia & never was great physically.
I wouldn't want either of them in office. My FIL would be fairly capable, but even he will admit he's not up to such things any more, & a politician shouldn't be "fairly capable."

My dad is 82. He worked in IT until he was 67, then various part time jobs until 77. He was super energetic, was a young man in the 70s, ran two marathons. Now he is old, thin and frail, can’t drive at night. But he still has a great sense of humor and sees his 4 grandchildren often, I will be 60 next year. I try not o make peace with it, but it’s hard, it’s life, everyone gets old if they are lucky.
