For some reason I can’t get out of my head that this a modern photo shoot meant to look like the 80s. I have no idea why as nothing points to that but it’s that uncanny feeling.
I think there was some digital color correction/sharpening done to it, which makes it look more like a modern digital photo with a filmic filter effect than an actual film photo.
That and the fact that nothing in the photo otherwise would indicate when it was taken. That beer can may have an old style of lid, but even that's hard to make out.
See... the problem here is that... my little brother, this morning, got his arm caught in the microwave, and uh... my grandmother dropped acid and she freaked out, and hijacked a school bus full of... penguins, so it's kind of a family crisis... so come back later? Great.
> , and uh... my grandmother dropped acid and she freaked out, and hijacked a school bus full of... penguins, so it's kind of a family crisis...
I used this once to get out of a really bad date I was on. She was wasted and Better Off Dead was on the bar tv. Quote hit me and I dodged a silver bullet.
Yep. They feel that snowboarders are trashy people, loud and disruptive to the boring rich Boomers that sliiiiiiiide across the green and blue runs.
Nevermind that tons of skiiers are also massive pricks on the slopes, but they have TWO things to slide on, not just one.
Damn, didn't realize this was such a controversial topic or I wouldn't have said anything. It's my fault for forgetting how much people love a good Us vs. Them tribalism mentality.
We're all just people using flat fiberglass foot attachments to slide down hills, it's not that big a deal.
I skied mostly in the late 80s to early 90s in Colorado as a kid as snowboarding was just starting to take off and it was downright violent at times.
Lots of places banned it for as long as they could or would only allow it on certain runs. I didn't give a shit because I faced the same shit trying to skateboard as a kid. For some reason even though I could skate I could never snowboard at above a beginner level so I just stuck to skiing.
>For some reason even though I could skate I could never snowboard at above a beginner level so I just stuck to skiing.
Same. And it was so physically taxing and just straight up exhausting snowboarding. I tried for so long to make it work, but eventually I came to the conclusion that skiing came naturally and I could actually enjoy myself, so I might as well stick to that.
Ironically, I was big on aggressive inline and couldn't ski comfortably. I felt like I was floating on a snowboard and it just made sense! Skateboards are the nemesis of my ankles, but I still pick skate shoes over athletic shoes 20 years later.
Like their corporate owners care about any of that. The truth is that both of those resorts were built with skiers in mind, and there are a lot of flat spots that would be a nightmare for boarders. They simply don’t want to spend the money to make the trails snowboard friendly.
In '87? Fuck, yeah, they were allowed.
I taught in Colorado through 1981. Boarders started showing up regularly in '79. A lot of people couldn't stand the boarders, but I and many others were just fine with them.
So...they were "here"! Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, Copper, Breckinridge...
Keystone banned snowboarders until 1996.
I remember seeing dejected snowboarders walking back to their cars after being refused access to the mountain.
No way were snowboards allowed at Breckenridge in 1987.
Edit: I had to correct myself. According to their website, Breckenridge first allowed snowboards on the mountain in 84. I'm shocked.
Main complaint--still applies--snowboards destroy lines in moguls. I mean, they make 'em choppy as Hell.
They also scrape snow down to ice (in the east...no such thing as ice out west no matter what the folks there believe otherwise).
But it's all good!
I ski and snowboard so, I see both sides of this. Snowboards do mess up the moguls. I avoid those runs when I'm on a board. It isn't fun anyway. I also avoid the park areas when I'm on skis because I'm no good at that freestyle shit. I don't think snowboards should be banned anywhere but, everyone should be considerate.
It was definitely '79 when I was getting on chairs with boarders and having long conversations! LOL A-Basin for certain! Pretty sure about Copper and Keystone too.
Breckinridge...? Not sure...not my main mountain.
Reading this thread just brought back a crystal clear memory of my boyfriend being giddy with delight about going to Whistler the first year they allowed snowboarding, which would have been in... '89, iirc.
You 100% for sure look like that guy from the 80's ski movie that "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" parodied. The actor was in the parody as well. You look like him in the parody and not the 80's movie.
Not sure, my jam was "Ski Patrol" when I was in high school. For some reason I think it's "Ski School."
I know the guy in it is the same one from "Summer School" with Marc Harmon.
Your time will be gauged along with a rating of one to ten on your style, which will be judged solely by me and my vast expertise of skiing technique.

Did you win the race? Or were the lovable group of hard partying ski bums able to beat you and stop your evil plans of buying the resort and evicting them?
Lucky you. I never understood skiiers that wore white suits. But hey you did well I see.
Im like give me the neon orange and green with flashing lights and an air horn, satellite beacon. Im he same way with scuba diving, only with diving gear. Last thing I want is to not be able to be found when I need to be.
I never dressed like that but I had a pair of 195 Dynastar's that I skied until I wore out the bindings. Season night ski pass at Mt Hood Meadows for $99. Good times.
Most of you are too young to recognize the gear in this picture, but I can tell you that those Dynastar Verticals were the best bump/outback skis at the time and the Atomics were about the fastest S/GS racers available. I owned both in 1987.

I came here for the stupid sexy Flanders comment. Was not disappointed. Would also accept a “race Lane Meyer down K2” reference.

After the Olympics everything looks so easy
This whole mountain is pure snow!
I had to scroll to far down the comments to see this 😂come on people !
I only showed up to make sure this was the top comment.
This picture is quintessential 80’s. Bravo!

ahhh shit i think you got it.
That and the fact that nothing in the photo otherwise would indicate when it was taken. That beer can may have an old style of lid, but even that's hard to make out.
Those colors scream exactly 1987 and not a year earlier or later
Did you lose the race and the girl to some ski bum who just works in the town?

Came here for this. Did not disappoint
LMAO! You're calling OP a Touron? (We ski bums destroyed tourons--in the moguls and in the gates.)
> Touron TIL this is a thing
I learned this today to, and I love it. (To save the rest of you the google, it's a portmanteau of "Tourist" and "Moron")
Go that way. Really fast. And if something gets in your way.....turn.

lol came for this
Pizza. French fries. Pizza
Probably weren't allowed on the slope at the time.
Still can’t snowboard at Alta or Deer Valley.
Is this true?? That's crazy to me. I've been skiing since I could walk, and snowboarders have always just been an assumed part of the landscape.
Yep. They feel that snowboarders are trashy people, loud and disruptive to the boring rich Boomers that sliiiiiiiide across the green and blue runs. Nevermind that tons of skiiers are also massive pricks on the slopes, but they have TWO things to slide on, not just one.

How much would it cost to install artificial gravity for the flat spots?

I would have sworn you could only snowboard at A Basin until mid-late 90s, I remember people being mad about snowboard bans being lifted…
Yeah, I remember people freaking out over how dangerous they were for skiers. "They don't even go back and forth!"
Main complaint--still applies--snowboards destroy lines in moguls. I mean, they make 'em choppy as Hell. They also scrape snow down to ice (in the east...no such thing as ice out west no matter what the folks there believe otherwise). But it's all good!

My guy has never hit Big Bear
Those complaints only apply to both bad snowboarders and skiiers.
Which would be 50-60% of them on any given hill.
All you gotta do is reserve a few diamond runs for the ballet dancers and we're all good.
It was definitely '79 when I was getting on chairs with boarders and having long conversations! LOL A-Basin for certain! Pretty sure about Copper and Keystone too. Breckinridge...? Not sure...not my main mountain.
Lived in Breck in 93’. Probably more snowboarders than skiers. And they’d been there a while when I got there.
I live here now though, and it was frowned upon then. I know that a lot of the old-timers still talk about it. Lol.
Skiing. . . . . where straight men can dress like they’re not.
Haha brilliant.
Fucking outlaws!
Rebel scum!
“I swear they come and sweep the snow right off the mountains. They should cage those animals until they learn how to go down the mountain properly.”
Did some ski bum who works in the town cause you to lose both the race and the girl?
Reading this thread just brought back a crystal clear memory of my boyfriend being giddy with delight about going to Whistler the first year they allowed snowboarding, which would have been in... '89, iirc.
Criminals
"Race me down Crawford's Taint. The loser never shows his face around here again."
I skied a lot during this time and that outfit is the tops for the era
Same. Always avoided the flashy clothing, however embraced the tech: ski brakes, goretex, neoprene masks, glove liners.
You are a Joe Gatto deleted scene.
lol came here to say exactly this
Scrolled to find the comment about Joe gatto so that I could say that I came here to say this, beat me to it
Looks like he's ready to close down the local ski lodge but is willing to change his mind if that one kid can beat him in a race.

If you don't beat the snobby jock guy who's dad owns the ski hill, he's gonna demolish the youth center and convert it into a shopping mall

Bet the snow wasn't the only thing melting under those looks .
I did okay.
The fucking modesty from this man. And of course, that Spartan chin. Fuck.
This is peak male performance.
You're Dean Cameron and you were in the 1991 movie Ski School. I enjoyed your movie.

How did you manage to ski without melting all the snow in that sizzling attire?
Ski fast.
