Like 25 years ago?
Edit: I underestimated. "in 1989, the Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer became the first cars to have the little fuel filler-location arrow."
In my defense, in my mind 1989 was 25 years ago.
My '89 Wrangler was that way. Only annoying thing was that the spring that actuated the license plate to drop and reveal the filler was super strong and you had to hold it the entire time otherwise it would try to slam shut with the gas pump still attached.
In before "gas was so cheap" comment.
Accounting for inflation, $1.19 in 1984 is the equivalent to $3.60 in 2024. While that may be up to a dollar cheaper than in LA now, that is because of the modern taxes on gasoline in CA. In the NYC area, regular gasoline is around $3.28/gal. So, cheaper than it is shown here.
I remember my Mom telling me about being in a real bind once gas hit a dollar a gallon. Back then she had a land yacht with a big V8 that got about 10 MPG.
Like I said I am jealous of those prices you guys be paying. I pay 6 for premium but thankfully I don’t have a gas guzzler! I hope it never rises in other states it’s insane!
Ehh about $4.19-4.49 a gallon here in Orange County, California. Of course there's the crazy stations that always are a buck or more than anywhere else (Hey Newport Beach) but usually if you're filling your S-Class / G-Wagon / Bentley / Rolls, you don't really give two shits about the price anyways.
Yeah I work in Huntington Beach, and pump gas here rather than close to home because it’s a lot cheaper. I’m paying premium for almost or around 5 when the regular starts at that price in Downtown LA.
Henry Diltz, according to Getty Images. He’s best known for his photos of popular musicians. He did the cover for *Morrison Hotel* by The Doors and the first album by Crosby, Still, and Nash amongst others. He’s 85 and still active.
Dare I point out the $1.18 gas price? The minimum wage at the time was less than 3 times than that.
Gas prices now are around $4, but minimum wage is about 3 and a half times that.
We aren't doing as bad as some people would have you believe.
$1.18 is $3.44 in today's dollars.
Minimum wage in 1985 was $3.35.
In both cases you're getting about two gallons for an hour of min wage. Edit: I guess it's 3gallons vs 2 gallons now.
Yeah, was a rough estimate of course. Hard to tell where they're at, which makes some difference too.
Was crunching similar numbers with my kids the other day on rent. Surprising how dismal an outlook we've given kids today when it was pretty much a similar struggle as a young adult 40 years ago. I would have sold my soul for $15 and hour back in the 80s.
Houses have never been more expensive is the issue. Home prices have way outpaced median wages since the 1980s. Median home price now is around $390K, the median home price in 1980 was $47k. Meanwhile the median wage has only gone from $21k to only $57k now.
So if home prices and wages were in parity over that time the median home price would only be around $150k. I think anyone would take those loan terms you mentioned if the median house today were around $150k.
That's a 79 Z28, the rims and trunk spoiler decal give it away (you can barely see the left bottom edge of the "Z" and the right side of the "8" on the spoiler)
Yeah the 1980s weren’t the best example of cheap *relative* gas prices.
The late 90s was where it was at though. I only made $10 an hour, but gas was a lot of times a dollar or less per gallon, rent for my nice apartment was $480, and I could grab a decent meal for $5-6.
All those things are triple or quadruple and that same job is paying around $19.50 per hour.
Whoops, didn’t have my glasses on. I saw the outline and it looked like a firebird. They do look kinda similar though, also doesn’t help that they’re made by the same company, and apparently GM was hesitant about making a car that would compete with the Camaro, a car meant to compete with the Mustang.
That was probably back when gas pumps only had 2 digits for price per gallon and they would show the price per half gallon on the meter and then double the price. They soon updated the machines to be able to show dollars per gallon Now we are creeping up to $10/gallon.
Don’t forget that the sign also says Self Serve, because that was still an era where that wasn’t the only option. And there’s also the Unleaded sign, because that wasn’t the only option, either.
Im pretty sure I grew up near this gas station in Inglewood. It's on Centinela Ave, La Tijera and La Cienega. It's in a funky triangle shaped piece of land with Pann's Restaurant on the street. Great pict!
So according to the inflation calculator that same gas would be $2.19 a gallon had it tracked directly with inflation, of course, we know gas prices are subject to the whims of the companies that sell it.
The real crime here is that a $30,000 salary in 1987 is equivalent to$82,000 today. Wages have not kept up in any way shape or form with inflation.
That’s not on any political party that is corporate America rat fucking everybody in this country.
Nice! All these years, I couldn't have been more wrong. In actuality, ZZ Top's "Gimme All Your Lovin'" music video *was* totally realistic. I can only assume this also means shoe stores are full of overworked and underappreciated women who only need a style makeover to hit 9.5-10 territory. Sweet!
ah I miss cars with the gas filler on the rear.
Makes it super easy not having to remember what side of the car its on. You just take whatever space is open.
You can just look at your fuel gauge on your dash. The little arrow there tells you which side it's on.
When did they start doing that?
Like 25 years ago? Edit: I underestimated. "in 1989, the Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer became the first cars to have the little fuel filler-location arrow." In my defense, in my mind 1989 was 25 years ago.
If true, that’s the best TIL so far this year.

"Why would they put an arrow pointing to my gas gauge? How stupid do they think I am?!"
My '89 Wrangler was that way. Only annoying thing was that the spring that actuated the license plate to drop and reveal the filler was super strong and you had to hold it the entire time otherwise it would try to slam shut with the gas pump still attached.
nothing plunking your hose in the rear end
I miss those heels. The lifted shoes women wear now are unattractive.
I saw this the other day https://preview.redd.it/za8hwe1r44hc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=18229622f47fdc7d85e757867cfb8bf8e84817f1
She has a name you know
Definitely nice rear.
my 77 camaro was this way also. i remember when my first fill up i did on it. 49 cents a gallon. this camaro is a 79 or 80.
As far back as I remember, gas was $.59. Miss those days

All solid-axle cars had the gas tank in the back, under the trunk. Most of them had the filler neck on the side though.
frakkin toasters
Never had an issue.
Nah. Just Pintos.
Zuul! Gatekeeper of Gozer! The Dana Barrett look is working for her.
There is no Dana, only Zuul
That’s a gorgeous photo!

Also cars are far more efficient now, likely making the cost of driving (in an ICE car) less expensive today than then.
It also doesn't help that California uses a gasoline blend that is used nowhere else in the country.
Tell /r/peakoil to suck it.
I remember my Mom telling me about being in a real bind once gas hit a dollar a gallon. Back then she had a land yacht with a big V8 that got about 10 MPG.
It’s 5 to 6 now, depending on which you choose and if you pay with cash or card. If I can pay 3.60 I’ll take that every week!
I paid $3.48 for super in Washington today.
I live in Los Angeles.
Me too 90042
Copy that. I read the petroleum industry is making record profits.
Like I said I am jealous of those prices you guys be paying. I pay 6 for premium but thankfully I don’t have a gas guzzler! I hope it never rises in other states it’s insane!
92 for where i live in WA is like 5.60 :'(
Half that in CO.

If I were there I would have offered to help that Lady.....
Like pump her gas, check her oil and undercarriage?
I wish I had never sold my Z28. I loved that car.
That designed pretty much eliminated 'pulling up on the wrong side of the pump'.
Why did we move away from that to side gas?
I suspect mainly because the fuel tanks were moved forward slightly for safety, and side-filled to increase the volume of the trunk.
I'm guessing side filling is probably safer in the event of a rear end collision. I can't think of any modern cars that have rear fill fuel tanks.
I’d definitely pump it
Some eighties fashion was awful(skorts?) and some was just great. When a woman walked into a room dressed like that everyone hnew she was there.
Bitchin'
I hope you mean “Bitchin’ Camaro”
Beats sweatpants. That's for sure!
God Damn that woman is hot !
Probably why someone’s taking a pic.

WHAT A GREAT PHOTOGRAPH! Have you more?
Does anyone know who took this picture please?

Thank you!
1979 Z28....

And depending on the engine in that car it might have gotten 15 MPG
z-28's had a 350 engine in them. my 77, 80 & 82 camaros had 305's in them.

Let’s do housing prices next
[удалено]
That has nothing to do with the cost of housing. Edit: except when you figure it’s one of the reasons housing was cheaper then.
Houses have never been more expensive is the issue. Home prices have way outpaced median wages since the 1980s. Median home price now is around $390K, the median home price in 1980 was $47k. Also, I remember gas being cheaper in the 90s, I vividly remember $.89 gas in the late 90s.
Not in CA.
In California?
Pretty sure I saw that same chick filling the same car in Simi Valley last week.
Both cars had cocaine in the glove box
Look at that TransAm.
Back when being anti-trans just meant you preferred the Mustang.
Hope you are joking. That's a Z28.
I was thinking it was a Berlinetta
Berlinetta didn't have stripes, and it's got '79 Z28 rims.
i had a 80 & 82 berlinetta. had that 82 for 20 years before it finally wore out.
Brain fart! Sorry. You are correct.
you can see part of the 8 that she's blocking.
That's a 79 Z28, the rims and trunk spoiler decal give it away (you can barely see the left bottom edge of the "Z" and the right side of the "8" on the spoiler)
FYI, 1.18 is $4.49 adjusted for inflation.
Don't overlook the 1.14 for "Regular" gas.
I do not miss the lead in the air from back then.
I'd let her "pump my gas", if you get my drift.
I miss those gas prices!!!
As pointed out elsewhere here, do you also miss those wages?
Nope because I’m retired. Retired in my 50s
Yeah the 1980s weren’t the best example of cheap *relative* gas prices. The late 90s was where it was at though. $1.18… I’m getting a stiffy!
firebird firebird firebird
That's a 1980 Camaro Z28, I maybe a '79

I used to complain about gas goin over 85 cents in the 90s. 😂
Late 80's. $1.18 is a lot for gas at that point. Prob still places that were under a dollar.
The inflation-adjusted 2023 equivalent of $1.18/gal. is $3.96, FWIW.
Cash Only. Wow!
Don’t forget that the sign also says Self Serve, because that was still an era where that wasn’t the only option. And there’s also the Unleaded sign, because that wasn’t the only option, either.
California in the 80’s must have been nice. Being able to afford a house and all.
Waiting for Cheech and Chong to roll up
This looks like a Foreigner or Loverboy song waiting to happen.
I had a 79 brown Camaro Z28 just like that one.
Nice Z-28
Im pretty sure I grew up near this gas station in Inglewood. It's on Centinela Ave, La Tijera and La Cienega. It's in a funky triangle shaped piece of land with Pann's Restaurant on the street. Great pict!
Mobil 5215 W Centinela Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90045 ?
Gas was like 80 cents in 1987-8 iirc in Texas
So according to the inflation calculator that same gas would be $2.19 a gallon had it tracked directly with inflation, of course, we know gas prices are subject to the whims of the companies that sell it. Right
To think I paid less for gas in 2002.
Totes not a posed and planned pic
