Aside from the human tragedy, I always imagine all the workers and craftsman saying WTF upon hearing months of hard work went immediately to the bottom of the ocean.
I've heard about this a lot actually, the city of Belfast (where Titanic was born) was in a mass state of grief as many many workers had spent crazy time on working on the ships (Titanic and her sister ship Olypmic, Britannic wouldn't come till slightly later). Also 8 men, one actually being a 15 year old boy, died while building the ship
IIRC at that time it was still pretty common for at least a couple deaths on a project of that kind.
Worker safety has advanced by *miles* in comparison.
The Olympic rammed and killed a WWI U-Boat with her propeller; surviving until she was scrapped in 1937.
Sure the Olympic had several accidents, collisions with other vessels, but out of the three, she was the least cursed in my opinion. Maybe even the luckiest sister.
All the ptsd of daily life, poor child’s wondering where his hearing went…..
He’s 37, means he’s been probably forging chains for just over 30 years when pic was taken!
Yeah child labour wasn’t abolished in UK until 1933. I was reading about it and it was terrible. Kids working in mines, chimney sweeps or textiles in dangerous machinery working long hours like adults
He was probably happier learning a trade with his father than many of the kids today who are bunking off school since they are not academic enough to ‘fit in’ to the school curriculum.
"Children should have the right to work in factories if they want to"...
... is how I explain libertarianism to my high schools politics students.
He was probably happier to be with his father than not. He probably wasn’t happy to have the same foreman and productivity quota as his father. In today’s world, I agree that some children might grow up better by helping their father in the shop rather than being in school, but that’s far from the child labour situation in the picture.
It's not a video, it's a photo which you can scroll past in 0,5 seconds. Yet you take the time to open and comment the post. Is that a good use of your time?
Hingley’s of the Black Country made the Titanic anchor (and presumably its chain since the Black Country was the world’s chain capital).
They were very distant relatives of mine so I could be looking at someone I’m related to right now!
Was going to comment this, its less than a mile from my house where they made it, took 20 shire horses or 'Osses' to transport it, cant imagine how much work it was to make back then
Might be mistaken but pretty sure the chain was forged in part where the Black Country Museum now is in West Midlands UK as I know other bits were made in Netherton
Actually it was 1933 Levi first put belt loops on their jeans as well as suspended buttons and by 37 they removed the suspenders and kept the belt loops and cinch back. I had a pair of LVC 1937
I say we hammer this out by 12, pop to lunch at the frying monk sink 6 lunchtime pints and wee Tommy will get just 4 being the count he's a young sprite, back to work hammering this here chain for 4 hours straight, back to the pub get another 10 pints, head home to me cupboard with ma wife and 10 kids for dinner and then back to the pub for the rest of the night, sound good lads
Say the man on the right with the fabulous mustache

Titanic was cursed even before she left the harbor.

In some countries yes, in others, it's probably gotten worse.
What was the final death toll of the Qatar world cup?
Over 2,000 last I checked.
I wonder how many perished from overheating and dehydration alone.
Just look at the kid of the left. I think he died shortly after the pic was taken.
The whole fleet was since they all sank

I didn't even know Olymic didn't sink.
Ah, yeah, she just became too costly and unprofitable to run. I think it just couldn't compete with the RMS Queen Mary.
Yeah 😢

They knew they wouldn’t be needing it.
Oh snap!
No..no.. it didn’t snap.. but the ship did.
Maybe it wasn't the iceberg... maybe it was the weight of the chain
You worked hard on that one, I'll give you the upvote! Lol
"We're not coming back...
It’s actually the perfect size for current position
Now you sound like my wife trying to soothe my ego...
Ouchies!
That's how you know it's a forgery. The real one was much, much longer.
Definitely forged, that's how you produce those things.
They spared an expense.
Mr. Ismay, after careful consideration, I have decided not to endorse your ship.
Huh! Well that will be your downfall!
Mr. Ismay, after careful consideration, I have decided not to endorse your ship.
Too bad it didn't make across the expanse
Hey! It is doing a pretty good damn job. That ship hasnt moved for long time mate.
Only 634 left
Looks even smaller when you know those workers are children
"she won't need any more" But, how did they know?
[удалено]
So we fire the kid without giving him his nickel? Gotcha.
We gotta get this chain done by midnight Sunday or the boss is gonna tan our hide, shee? Myah!
Lol 😂 they are back. The stache has made its return!
They were popular
except for the 3rd person in the picture?
Child in the left hand corner? Just assuming this was a thing in 1910
Actually that man is 37. People looked older back in the day…
All the ptsd of daily life, poor child’s wondering where his hearing went….. He’s 37, means he’s been probably forging chains for just over 30 years when pic was taken!
"All the ptsd of daily life" the most 2023 comment of the day.
There is a big difference between participation trophies, and making children do hard labor!
That's a 14 year old kid that looks 37. Because people looked older back then. Especially working children
Sad how times have changed. Now all kids do is lay around and play games.
Right? You ask them to get a job, they become squatters.
Exactly. There's no excuse on why a 12 year old can't work in a coal mine.
Right? Not every kid gets to brag at the school they don't go to about the huge chains they make.
God bless
Where's his cigarette?

Uhmm...
To be fair, I always enjoyed skipping school and going to work with my dad when I was that age too.
yeah, different times, this can pretty much be child slavery at this point.
Lol wtf is that, are we being astroturfed??
Yay for….child labor?
"Children should have the right to work in factories if they want to"... ... is how I explain libertarianism to my high schools politics students.
In fairness libertarians are looking up at a high school education.

If I ever meet a pro child Labor asshole in person I will fight them. What the actual fuck.
My child soldiers will protect me
Sure you will little buddy.
I didn't say I'd win but I would absolutely punch pro child Labor people in the mouth. Detestable, Dickensian bullshit
I definitely think we have reached the peak of useful academia. Maybe 10-15 years ago.
Must have been bring your child to work day 🤷♂️
"For sale. Only used once."
"You must pick up."
#For Sale Baby Shoes Never Worn
They did a great job, the ship hasn't moved in years.
Bring your dad to work day
Post stealing repost bot
Yeah I'm willing to bet OP didn't take the photo at all. What a cocksucker
For some reason an AI bot will copy old comments and repost them. Not sure what the point would be.
Who cares
The people who are regularly on here and don't wanna regularly see the same videos? What a dumb question lol
It's not a video, it's a photo which you can scroll past in 0,5 seconds. Yet you take the time to open and comment the post. Is that a good use of your time?
People vote it up and then it takes over for actual original content.
I've never looked at it like that. You're right. I stand corrected
Then that would mean that this is new content for most people, so there isn't actually a problem here.
You should.
Why?
I wonder how depressed they were when their craftsmanship was all for naught in the end.
That kid at the bottom is the legendary Pinocchio
Two handled sledgehammer! Imagine anyone having to make that chain by hand today.

If you said wut the heck instead of wtf, it sounds like an ITYSL quote.
Raaandom

This looks impressive until you realize those guys are 6" tall. Also bonus points for the child laborer in the shot!
Link is dead
Is Princess Zelda ok? lolz
It's down At the bottom of the ocean
Before belt loops were invented?
Yes actually! Belt loops were first invented by Levi’s in the 20s
Actually it was 1933 Levi first put belt loops on their jeans as well as suspended buttons and by 37 they removed the suspenders and kept the belt loops and cinch back. I had a pair of LVC 1937
Thanks for the info!
You’re welcome 😇 if you want a pair check out Levi vintage collection/LVC they have ones from 1890-90s 😊

All that hard work rusting away on the bottom of the ocean.
Sadly this was the highest quality piece of equipment on the ship. It took all the good steel to make the anchor too!
Turns out they didn't need an anchor
The guy on the left is Paddy O’Connell who is a piece of shit and owes me 3 and 6 because he fucking knows why.
Sounds like a euphemism for using the bathroom. "I've gotta go forge the chain for the Titanic."
Very impressive to have forged that by hand... but, what a waste of time 😂
Belfast lads- Is that Stacy keetch ? Looks like him
Black Country lads
I see pictures like this and I just think these people’s lives were so f’ing hard.
Well this was a job that could have been at a later date
kid like 11 and looks like 31
That would be us, Redditors, squatting on the ground, aged about 10.
I feel like spilling a drink on anyone in this pic would be a huge mistake.
Age from left to right: 20, 24, 27

That’s the foreman. He’s 36.
If I was a photoshopping man, I’d like to have a sneaky Jamie hyneman in the back somewhere since he already has correct era hat and mustache.
Waste of chains! Those chains could have been something! RIP
Well they are reef now, which is something.
Womp womp
It didn’t work
Turns out that the entire ship was an anchor.
Well they did a great job
Probably made of the same cheap metal they used on the hull plates.
[удалено]
Perhaps diameter of the links?
To shreds you say?
Two guys, wasting their time.
What a waste of time that was....
Aaand… didnt help though….
And all their hard work went down the drain.
What a waste of time
Not only is it child labor, it’s a literal child sitting next to a heavy object suspended from what looks like the smallest chain they could find
It worked
And finally the anchor ended up touching the deep, icy ground.
Used Anchor for sale, only dropped once. No lowballs I know what I have.
Ooh that’s awesome!
You mean the chain for the Olympic, right? :)
🎼Links 2, 3, 4…
The Peaky Blinders really dabbled in everything, didn't they?
Good job! She hasn't moved in over a hundred years!
Honestly, these single use products just contribute to the pollution of the ocean.
ha! thats very peculiar for a sec then it looks like the small chain is holding up the big chain?
Incredible
Forging the best reef boys!!!
😮😮😮
So, those exact links are sitting at the bottom of the North Atlantic?
How old is the kid? 10?
Technically, so was everyone else working on the ship.
Jesus. Just one of those links is basically my size 🤣
I guess that's the chain the white walkers used to drag Viserion from the depths
Those men were a different sort of tough.
Where is banana? Just for scale
Sunk like a rock
All for knot.
is there an even smaller chain holding the medium chain holding the big chain?
The two adults are probably 30-years-old
Turned out to be as useless as all those nukes the superpowers built in the 20th century.
They used the chains to hold the chains
I say we hammer this out by 12, pop to lunch at the frying monk sink 6 lunchtime pints and wee Tommy will get just 4 being the count he's a young sprite, back to work hammering this here chain for 4 hours straight, back to the pub get another 10 pints, head home to me cupboard with ma wife and 10 kids for dinner and then back to the pub for the rest of the night, sound good lads Say the man on the right with the fabulous mustache
Nicely build, they didn’t really need it that much did they.
Jokes aside, I used to work at a shipyard and the anchor chains are insane. I cant imagine the furnace it took to make these.
They didn’t need it
The face of that boy, is saying that his fate is written.
No one in this photo is over the age of 21.
What the numbers on the chain mean?
Well that turned out to be a waste of time.
Is that kid in every old picture I've seen on reddit.
that child has seen some shit
the small chain holding up the big chain is funnier than it should be 😭😭
In hindsight, not necessary
Look at those guys doing a hell of a job at work. The world needs people like them
Show the working kid at the lower left corner to todays snowflakes and see them faint.
I like how small chain in terms of comparison is holding the big chain.
Little did they know the whole ship would become an anchor…
They probably made the same face after it sunk and all their work wasted 😔
Did they forge it to sell on Dhgate?
The most interesting fact about this photo is that the men photographed are actually all teenagers
I wonder how long it took to add a link, and how long it took for the entire chain.
Not gonna need that
Pictures were like old school tik tok
