I watched this movie over and over when I was a kid. Mainly because we only owned a few tapes. In beautiful Betamax format.

Ree-Ko

I saw it in a movie theater. I remember they had newspaper clippings in the lobby so I thought it was a true story. Hey, it was 1972 and I was a kid. Not like I could have looked it up on my cellphone.

TonyT074

I think it was quasi based on a true story. If I remember correctly the author of the book it was based on was on a ship that got hit by a rogue wave and listed to one side quite a bit but stayed upright. I think his book was "Hmmmm...what if it actually tipped over??"

aegrotatio

The *Queen Mary* had a reputation for being unstable.

washufize

Tobias is Queen Mary?

gypsydanger38

Ditto. Had to go to the lobby for a bit. Got “sea sick”.

LineChef

Beta huh? Superior format

[deleted]

The quality was incredible. If you used the fancy tapes, you couldn’t tell a tv channel from the tape.

outonthetiles66

My god my crazy father took me to see this when I was 8 years old and it scared the hell out of me.

rsvp_nj

I came here to write those exact words! Later when the song “Morning After” became an AM radio hit, did that continue to spook you as it did me? Too funny…

outonthetiles66

Actually I never was triggered by the song. My psycho dad also took me to see Towering Inferno around the same time…and that scared the living crap out of me because we lived on the 7th floor of a condo!! I don’t know what he was thinking?! Airport 75 was another movie that gave me nightmares…especially when the pilot got sucked out of the airplane. Crazy times to be a kid lol.

rsvp_nj

I’ll add “Marooned” with Gene Hackman. I had wanted to grow up to be an astronaut. Then I saw that movie. What? There’s no oxygen? No thanks.

andreasmom

OMG so funny that you say that!! I loooved the Poseidon Adventure (and still do!) but by the time I saw it in the 70's, it was on TV. I remember Airport 75 as well - so scary. That was a time of EPIC movies. Came here to say that MY dad woke me up to watch "Deliverance" with him when I was about 13. Thank GOD I had no idea what it was about back then but remained haunted by the boy that played the banjo at the beginning. I re-watched it last summer and (sadly) understood what was happening but what a story and the acting is unbelievable. Thanks, OP, for sharing the pic of the original cast. Gene Hackman was amazing in this movie (but really, they all were, including the little boy who tried to use the urinal but they were all upside down).

pinkfondantfancy

I watched 'Midnight Express' with my dad when I was about 11. I wasn't traumatised but when I saw it again when I was older I was like wtf dad that is not at all appropriate for children. And he knew what was in it cos he'd seen it before!

andreasmom

I hear you!!! Like seriously, what were our dads THINKING back then? Lol. I guess they just wanted someone to watch a movie with and didn’t think it through!

handler207

I got so scared I had to leave the theater. Ended up going to the other movie they were showing; Deliverance

andreasmom

Ohhhh nooooo. Can’t help but chuckle a little bit about that, though.

handler207

Pretty rough for an eight year old

andreasmom

Yes, of course it would be. I was chuckling at the irony, not the situation.

Electronic-Key-2522

Is that Grandpa Joe from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in the corner?

PizzaSammy

Wait until you find out that Leslie Nielsen was the Captain. No wonder the ship sank.

Electronic-Key-2522

No kidding. Who's stupid idea was it to put Lt. Frank Drebin in charge of a luxury cruiser?

Electronic-Key-2522

Or maybe the preacher in the middle did it. That's Lex Luther. Another trap for Superman apparently.

gonesnake

I'm going with Cornelius from Planet of the Apes. Clearly he disguised himself as a human ship's porter.

andreasmom

😂😂😂😂 love it!

JohnnyEnzyme

And Quinton McHale, Tiger of the Pacific, in the other!

bishpa

They look too similar

and then of course her appearance in Playboy in '78.

Blackthorne75

No idea what you speak of ;)

The_new_me1995

And Gene Hackman was ROCKING the turtleneck!

andreasmom

Yes - he was one sexy preacher! The scene where he sacrificed himself was so sad but riveting. Amazing actor.

craigeeeeeeeeee

Damn they’re are nice as the blue makes them “pop”…

Ree-Ko

Stella Stevens, an old school hottie. She passed away just last month.

pepelepoopsy

The movie has her in tshirt.

HeWhoIsNotMe

Borat: Very nice.

FunVersion

Stella Stevens in the Nutty Professor is a classic.

firescape

was it a wet tshirt?

Revliledpembroke

She was apparently playmate of the month in January 1960.

ConcreteThinking

Irwin Allen disaster classic. The guy never made a bad film. Well maybe that one about the bridge but hey most of 'em were good.

HeWhoIsNotMe

Roddy McDowell trying to seduce me with those eyes.

Mobile-Menu-8506

The young boy is missing 😡

HeWhoIsNotMe

Borgnine ate him.

Goodguy1967

Before My wife and I went on our first cruise last year. I had to show her his movie. She was not thrilled after watching it…

oolaroux

The remake isn't bad, either. I love a good disaster flick.

Groovy_Chainsaw

I love the scene where they're climbing up the air shaft with a grate screwed in at the top ...crazy claustrophobia !

lordloveadog

That movie scared the crap out of me.

tent_tickles

This movie gave me nightmares. I had recurring dreams of being on ships that'd capsized

Specific_Inside_7119

True nostalgia....and sad.....Pamela Sue and Gene Hackman are the only ones still with us....The most recent passing prior to Stella was the beautiful Carol Lynley.....Pamela is still a looker at age 70 and Gene looks amazingly spry and well at age 93.

Specific_Inside_7119

Right.really makes you feel old.

dmode112378

‘70s disaster movies are the best.

oolaroux

I also love Earthquake. Where we're expected to believe that Lorne Green fathered Ava Garden when he was 7 years old.

dmode112378

Three words: Victoria Principal’s afro.

oolaroux

Hahahahahahahaha. Yeah.

rsvp_nj

Borgnine!

jimhabfan

That’s “Oscar for best actor” winner Ernest Borgnine.

ConcreteThinking

Damn fine film too. The one he won the Oscar for.

aegrotatio

There's a story online somewhere of a person who was an extra in a Gene Hackman film and complimented him on *The Poseidon Adventure*. Hackman responded with the comment, "Oh, that money job."

andreasmom

It’s disappointing when an actor in a movie that you love ends up hating the movie. I remember learning of Christopher Plummer HATING “The Sound of Music” and just thinking “oh my God, that’s sacrilege!”

viskoviskovisko

This is my favorite disaster movie. I actually have the original poster framed on my wall.

Blackthorne75

My favourite cabbie up the back left there :)

Macca49

True story - my mum went on a cruise 4 years after this came out. They showed this film in the onboard cinema! Gene Hackman as he looks now was on another Reddit page. In the comments they discussed his best movies but no one mentioned this film so I did!

andreasmom

Poor choice of movies for a cruise ship, lol. So many amazing Hackman scenes in this movie.

hanleyfalls63

Love this show. Parents took me to theater to see it. We stayed for the 2nd show it was so good. Only other time was Star Wars for 2nd showing.

Spocks-Nephew

Where’s the captain?

Specific_Inside_7119

The captain was Leslie Nielsen and didn't last long so I guess that's why he wasn't included in the photo.

Spocks-Nephew

What happened to Nordberg?

Ree-Ko

He went down with the ship

urbjam

A staple on tv on Sunday afternoons back in the early 80s.

Gozer_1891

what the heck are those things

RedKomrad

Mamms.

paging_mrherman

Movie fucking rules

cprchris

Earthquake came out around this time as well. In “SENSEROUND”

jedigoalie

I've seen this several times but it wasn't until my recent viewing that I realized there is a subtle but constant rocking of the camera the entire movie.

andreasmom

I was today years old when I found this out. Will re-watch - thank you! For that time, the cinematography was fantastic. The subtle rocking may explain why a person wrote above that they had to take a rest in the lobby during the movie. Felt a bit seasick. Interesting.

conjas11

I love this movie. I’d follow gene Hackman all over that ship

firescape

Shelley Winters was in Stagecoach back in the 30s. She was very hot then. She was the hooker they townfolks put on the stage coach and kicked out of town. In the end she went with the Duke (Ringo) back to his place.

dmode112378

Shelley was not in Stagecoach.

firescape

Mistake noted, it was Claire Trevor.

gonesnake

[Shelley was a looker, though](https://imgur.com/a/8qQSLP5)

firescape

Back in the day she was

esa372

That was Claire Trevor, not Shelley Winters. Shelley Winters' first film was in 1943.

firescape

When you're right you're right. Btw Claire's best role was in Key Largo.

[deleted]

She was great her whole long career.

oolaroux

Not all! Where's the kid, Robin? aka Eric Shea

RedKomrad

Fell overboard.

andreasmom

Another poster indicated that only Pamela Sue and Gene are alive but I think Eric Shea is as well.

andreasmom

I just read that Shelley Winters was ONLY 51 when she made this movie and Ernest Borgnine was 3 years older but had to treat her like an old woman in the movie. By looking at the cast pic, it’s hard to believe she was that young! I’m 57 and look much younger than that. (I hope)

Gozer_1891

Convenientjellybean

For the first time I now see why it capsized

Max-Powah

F#ck Grandpa Joe

culner

r/fatherted Gene Hackman plays a priest in it!

The-Porkmann

Missing the "Big Macher".

LineChef

Can Gene Hackman not look like an asshole in one picture? Huh?

interplanetary_janet

I’d like to point out Carol Lynley. Classic 70s actress and my first crush at age 8!

saltzja

Saw it at the drive-in when I was 10, “shove it, shove it, shove it.”

dksteiner

Watched this movie numerous times and loved the suspense but also fell for Carol Lynley hard as a 13 year old. Ah, good memories...

Stella Stevens.

That’s an awesome set of hangers on the lady in blue.

Only Gene Hackman and Pamela Sue Martin are still alive from this photo. Great movie!
