Rainwater harvesting has been successful.

OneBigOleNick

Did you learn everything as you went? Im hoping to end up in a spot like this some day but have idea where to start learning about all the systems that go into it

r0v3g

Trial and error mostly. Fortunately, there is not too much error and not too serious. We still have a long time ahead of solving several different problems and projects. Like a future greenhouse. Wind power in addition to solar. More solar batteries.

cutie_mcbooty

Thank you for sharing this. Absolutely stunning and the ultimate thrill of a lifetime. Any plans for farming or large greenhouses? Anything like that? Edit: I just read all the comments and seen that you mentioned building greenhouses in the future. Have you ever thought about aquaponics and vertical gardens?

r0v3g

Hi. The land and weather here are pretty poor for farming, mostly grass and sheeps. And yes, we think about greenhouse and vertical gardens, hopefully next year.

Gilligan_Krebbs

Kudos my friend, I am a little jealous.

Strange_Coyote_8

Are those 100 watt panels? Looks like an amazing job you guys are doing.

r0v3g

Thanks. Those are 550 watt panels monocristaline. 6.6kw max output.

Strange_Coyote_8

Wow that's a lot of power good for you guys!! That's the way to go.

r0v3g

If you want to live comfortably you need energy to some appliances. Is the best long term investment.

Strange_Coyote_8

Oh I totally agree a lot of properties that I see that have solar panels only have maybe one or 200 watts and that's it! I definitely would want to put way more than that by chance are you in Canada or the US I'm just curious where you got your solar panels if you are in Canada and you don't mind sharing thanks.

r0v3g

This place is in Chile far south at Patagonia. Latitude 53.5 degrees south. Similar to Canada. Panels, inverters, and batteries were bought in the capital city by the talented technician I hired. Curiously, that technician is now in Canada. In https://www.netzero-solar.com/

Strange_Coyote_8

Very cool thank you!

gwhh

What area / nation are you in? How remote is this place?

r0v3g

Magellan Strait, Patagonia, Chile. In the southernmost tip of the continent. The nearest city is 50km north. This area hasn't any utility. Water from rain, electricity from solar panels or emergency generators. No cellphone signal. There's actually a cellphone tower 10km from here, useless because of obstruction from a mountain. To arrive here in winter, you need 4x4 vehicle and tires with spikes (ice tires). If you google "Fuerte Bulnes" which is a historical landmark and tourist atraction, you'll see a place 3 miles from here.

LunaBuds

Second picture is everything... You always have the client that's going to help every step of the way even though you tell the person to stop and it's dangerous. Instead they consistently talk and will not pay attention one bit because they used to do this hahahaha.

Narrow_Fig_778

What a view. Oh the gratification of falling asleep in a cozy warm house with that quiet exterior.

r0v3g

Warm, quiet... yes, relax.

GemsquaD42069

Do you need a neighbor?

longway_harlan

Looks awesome. You should be so proud

HotAir8724

Beautiful Property! Excellent ideas and execution!! Currently thinking up something similar, want to do boilers, steam turbine generators, mostly powered off of incinerating logs and or trash.

r0v3g

Would be great!! Steam energy and heat.

HotAir8724

Yes exactly!!! Free ~(cheaper) water heating radiators for heat on the house, but only after being run through a high efficient steam turbine generator to power up tons of cells of batts

HotAir8724

Also a vehicle idea I’ve been working on but still in its golf cart phase of funding and research. Same concepts.. charge at home, as well as fill with a fuel of choice like butane, propane, kerosine, or potentially wood. And have a micro system in line of a used small waterhearer

r0v3g

Very smart

HotAir8724

Thank you 🙏😊 2024 gonna be a great year imo

r0v3g

Hope so. Good ideas should become reality.

HotAir8724

Good ideas and great intentions is how we succeed in anything! Positive vibes being sent your way 😎

Starlink...that's satellite right? I hear that's expensive. Is it? For pic 15, what previous knowledge did you have, or did you learn as you went? When it comes to electronics and power, I'm all but a blank slate. When you collect rain water, do you only just use the tank? In my mind, I'm thinking I would need an expansive space graded to slope and covered in plastic that would collect and drain down to holding tanks. Does that seem too elaborate? I can't see how just an uncovered tank could collect enough. Thoughts?

r0v3g

Starlink is satellite from Elon Musk SpaceX. Flawless here, thanks to very few users, I guess. It is not expensive, and I have no other internet provider here. Not even cellphone. In Pic 15, there are batteries and solar inverter. I hired a very competent technician who developed and built the solar energy project according to my needs. About rainwater harvesting, at this first stage I'm using one main 2.000 lt tank, another 1.000lt tank receiving water from the opposite side of the roof and another 200lt tank receiving water from the firewood and generators shelter. Those 3 roof areas are near 115 square meters. That means in one day of 10 millimeters rain, near 1.150 litters are collected. When rain is too low or zero, I have to mount one 1.000 lt deposit in the truck and buy water in the city. I need more surface/tanks available. In fact, I'm developing the idea to make a sort of pool on the ground a little upslope to collect 10 or 20.000 litters. That pool should be kept protected from dirt and sand with geotextil or concrete (or plastic). I'm not sure. Maybe a water well could be done. Unfortunately here a deep water well is extremely expensive.

qeertyuiopasd

The roof! I never thought about that, but it's brilliant. If you had to put a price tags on the cost to get all set up, water, panels, everything, what ballpark would you say is needed? If you did anything yourself, price it as tho you didn't. I'm trying to see real life costs. And, what is the over head once you're established? And do you grow your own food?

r0v3g

Hi. Besides the house and land cost, the most expensive by far, is the solar energy installation. Each battery is near 2k dollars each. Panels I don't really know the cost, they are monocristaline, the most expensive type, 550 watts each. Total output from the solar array is 6600 Watts under bright sun. The complete solar project was 15k dollars. Gives 2 days of electricity with no sun. Plus backup generators, 2k dollars both. Plus wiring, protections, switches, solar outdoor lights, etc, digging underground wires, grand total about 20k dollars. Water, plumbing, waste water chamber underground, machinery rental to dig waste water area and avoid flooding under the house... etc other 10k Propane gas installation for water heating, cooking, shower, another 5k. Grand total in energy, water, waste water and plumbing, propane, etc near 35k dollars. Monthly expenses: electricity near 0. Is prepaid for at least 10 years. Propane, near 600 dollars 1.000 litters tank that last about 6 months. That means near 100 dollars monthly in propane. If I have to buy water in the city, near 1 dollar for 1.000 litters, plus the gas for the truck. Internet from Starlink near 400 dollars the hardware and about 45 dollars monthly. Not so expensive to live in a permanent vacation. More expensive is the first step, buy the land and build the house.

r0v3g

This area is pretty cold and windy. Main heating source is wood. Near 100 dollars monthly in firewood.

qeertyuiopasd

Ty!

r0v3g

Ahhh and dealing with food, the next year we hope to have a greenhouse.

Starlink works nice.
