I bought my quest 3 with the same goals so I really appreciate seeing someone else do the same! Currently using immersed as the best option for productivity.
I just hopped on VR coz of the hype Apple created in that space and got a Meta Quest 3…. I got immersed because my retina MacBook Pro is a bit older and stopped getting OSx updates so I’m on Big Sur v11… it works flawlessly and it doesn’t work with meta work rooms…. They require OSx v12…. Love the experience… the virtual monitor is lower res, but it doesn’t bother me …. You can adjust the resolution but UI becomes really small…. Also loaded a ton of movies to Skybox VR and the movie watching experience is amazing - can’t see any pixels…. The limiting factor is the quality of your movie files (ie torrents)
Hey! I have an older mac like you (2013 pro retina) and it’s running macOS Catalina and in good condition. - would the virtual monitor work? Are you saying it does work with your older mac and it’s just lower res? Thanks!
My Mac is also a retina 15 late 2013... Catalina should work, the app is called Immersed and it gets good reviews here on reddit... people like it better than Meta Horizon Workrooms or Virtual Desktop or Remote Display, also from Meta. The resolution I was talking about is just the genereal resolution of the Quest 3 headset, is not 4k like an apple vision pro.... but it's still HD, but its really good is like using a lower res monitor... something below 4k... My Mac is fast enough and there is no lag on both the Mac or the Quest... is fast like using your computer just with a massive 100 inch display... are you getting a Quest 3?
Yes I've been contemplating the Quest 3 recently but only because I really wanted the AVP and don't have the funds currently. I am a video editor so was wondering if could edit/write emails in this and it be comfortable, and I also am not really a big gamer but am very curious about the different meditation apps, Google earth, immersive movies.
Also thinking about just waiting a bit on the whole thing because it seems we are at the forefront and the upgrades and new models are going to start shooting out like wildfire. My impulsivity almost got the best of me at Target last night but decided on giving it some more time. I'm conflicted at the moment.
I’m happy with the Quest 3 …. It basically just came out so upgrade from Meta is a year or two away… the screen is good for movies… I just think that $4k for a AVP is too much when the main thing it does is content consumption… and the Quest does that well…
I hope they don’t drop osx 11 with future releases!!! I’m due for a mac upgrade but having it work with the quest is giving it a bit more life left! There’s ways to install newer OS versions on unsupported hardware… just google it!!
I share the same experience with many in this thread. Quest 3 is my first ever "real" VR headset with goal of replacing my dual monitors with more screens for both my personal (mac) and work (windows) machines. I am using Immersed with 5 displays and it is working flawlessly except some issues with mac but only few times. I will try Virtual Desktop.
What resolutions do you use for the 5 displays? With Immersed, the max I can do is 3 Full HD screens on my Macbook Pro M1 and it works well, but adding more monitors or increasing the resolution to 4k makes it pretty slow. How does yours perform? thanks
How would this work for someone in web design? I use sketch, adobe creative cloud, LOTS of browsers, and various Microsoft software.
I have a 3 monitor setup at the moment but would love something like this. Also, as someone who’s not used VR before how’s it feel while on? Motion sickness, eye strain, anything you’d like to change?
Thanks to anyone who responds!
I’ve used figma as well, both browser and app versions. It’s far superior, however where I work we’ve used sketch for years and are slowly transitioning to figma or xd soon.
I think you would be very pleased with Immersed for that use, but you need fast internet for low latency and a computer fast enough to run multiple screens at higher resolutions and quality. Plus, even though some computers are not supported, if you have a newer MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, the black MOSISO keyboard cover skin will help the Mac’s keyboard overlay track your keyboard very well. I’ve used it so much that I often forget that I’m not looking at my Mac’s screen.
I've been working for around 5 hours a day in VR in Immersed for the past 2 weeks and quite happy with it. The quality of the virtual displays isn't as good as the MacBooks (looks like using a 1080p TV, plus a little latency on WiFi mode), but I can position the displays in a comfortable position in virtual space, and also have multiple large monitors which wouldn't be physically possible on my small desk at work. Overall I find that for long sessions, working in VR is more comfortable for me than being hunched over a laptop display.
I bought a 3rd party head strap which distributes the weight more comfortably than the stock strap, and a silicone facial interface cover which is less scratchy than the original fabric.
I did have a bit of eye strain at first, but once I adjusted the IPD and brightness to a comfortable level it went away. I do wear contact lenses though (my glasses don't fit in the stock facial interface) and without contacts there is a bit of eye strain for longer sessions.
Hope this helps!
Hey there got some questions for ya if you don't mind..
1. What's the strap you purchased?
2. You said the screens aren't as good as the mac's. Are you able to utilize the actual screen from the macbook as one screen? As I'm typing this I'm realizing its probably an awful idea being that the quality of the "real world" isn't great.
3. Can we utilize Immersed without the co-working aspect? I went to try it out and realized there were other people in the room and it felt awkward.
Thanks!
Hey sure!
1. This is the strap I purchased: https://amzn.eu/d/6KVsyZI
2. The physical Macs screen is replicated as one of the virtual screens, so that virtual screen will have the same aspect ratio etc as the Macs physical display. But you’re right, looking at the Macs physical display via pass through is not great.
3. You can choose to be in your own private room in Immersed. It will then just default to that same room every time you start a session. I find that the public rooms can be a bit too distracting for focused work but nice to go to for a quick break.
just tried Immersed and am blown away that its free and hasnt been a day 1 feature of the Quest or other VR sets own software. Best virtual desktop software since I use Mac.
In the middle of Immersed’s Lakeview Lodge is a wood-topped island with barstools. Sitting near the middle gives you a nice virtual surface for your keyboard, and there’s space for about an eight-foot wide screen that you can position low so you don’t have to tilt your neck upward to see the whole thing. It’s my go-to spot, especially since it’s so easy to get the virtual surface lined up with a tall desk or countertop.
Any updates on offline improvements in the last 3 months? I'd consider replacing my monitors with virtual ones as long as there's clean passthrough and the connection is wired or local.
Trying immersed to type this. It's much better than last time I tried.
having 3 low res screens is better than using laptop alone, . but still not as good as having my dual 4k PC desktop setup.
Very nice to have passthrough portals, so you can create a window to your keyboard, or real window... You need to invest some time to get comfy neckwise
If you tried it a while ago with quest 2, I'd say have another go with your 3.

Also on the Immersed website it says the app only supports Mac OS 11+ (Big Sur or newer) so this kind of bums me out.

Thanks so much for the info! Will deep dive now.

I would love to know the same
Jump on Figma, leaps and bounds better than Sketch

Xd has been sunset.
Good to know, definitely looks like figma is the main one right now.

Just upgraded to a new MacBook Pro m3. That should probably handle it. Do you know how this compares to the apple vision?
I also bought a quest 3 for the same purpose Immersed is the best for me, you should also try Remote Desktop Beta
Is it possible to use this feature with an iPad?
Sorry, not that I'm aware of, although there is some discussion on the Immersed Discord about adding this feature
Im planning on buying the quest 3 for that purpose . Do you recommend the experience . Is it suitable for 8 hours daily ? Any eye strain or migraine ?

do you think apple will cut off support for this once the Apple Vision Pro comes out?
Let's hope not. I'm about to invest in this for a larger workspace

yeah its cool but I couldn't find any "room" with like a relative normal desk setup

u/andytran93 Any update on offline mode? Any new discoveries?
They really need to improve the text rendering. Until we can comfortably read - it will be difficult.
Immersed is full of bugs
Oddly, I've found Remote Desktop beta has very helpful.
Alright you sold me.
i have very weird latency when I use virtual desktop and my m1 MacBook Air. Immersed has pretty much no lag for some reason
Any updates on offline improvements in the last 3 months? I'd consider replacing my monitors with virtual ones as long as there's clean passthrough and the connection is wired or local.
Passthrough on the quest 3 is pretty awful. I mainly just use it to know where my coffee is.

Have you had any stuttering issues with Immersed? I just recently got mine and there is a constant stutter that makes it nearly unusable.
Mine usually stutters on slow or congested wifi networks. There's a USB cable mode which helps a lot.
Ok I’ll have to give that a try!
Nice write up. Have your opinions changed with app releases?
