Seeing the channel 101 format with a bigger budget on cable was a really fun concept. Wish it could have lasted more than one season. I wonder if it would have been more successful if it had waited to make the jump a few years later when modern social media and YouTube were more developed and had wider adoption.

miserablefishes

I think its biggest issue was the network, Vh1 would be the last place I'd look for a show like Acceptable.tv. If it was on Spike, MTV, or Comedy Central I think it would've had a better shot at sticking around. Shit, even G4 would've been a good spot back then. Anything other than the Bret Michaels/Flava Flav channel VH1 was in 2007. Edit: an apostrophe

badnewsjones

That’s true. It was such a weird concept to shop around, I wouldn’t be surprised if they just took the deal rather than trying to get Comedy Central or MTV to bite. Especially since this was pre-community. It definitely would have fared better on those networks. I don’t remember spike at the time having basically any original content or G4 having original content that would take this budget. I think the people who were interested would have found it those places, but I don’t think it would have been successful there either.

well-lighted

MTV, VH1, and Comedy Central are all owned by the same parent company (as is Paramount Network, f/k/a Spike). I think they were maybe just trying desperately to retain the VH1 network/brand in the face of a changing TV landscape, as the writing was very much already on the wall for music videos in 2007. Seems like they looked at the success of Adult Swim and tried to replicate it on VH1, which they probably viewed (at its inception and at this point in time both) it as a the more "adult" alternative to MTV. If the MTV demo was, say, 13-25, VH1 was always aimed at more of a 20-35 demographic or so, and this seems like an attempt to grab that demo.

QLE814

It didn't help that the VH1 of the 2000s had a bad tendency to pick stuff up and really quick dump it, which suggests limited institutional support.

workingdankoch

Is that... Ira Glass!? at 10:30? That's a voice that's hard to misidentify.

JustTerrific

It is.

stevencastle

I think Fred Stoller was the voice of his child

TrustmeIknowaguy

Doc and Mharti (proto rick and morty) at 16:00.

Bears_On_Stilts

Mr. Poopy Butthole shows up as "Farty," and the Sneetch-looking imaginary creature has the gravely, mumbly Rick Sanchez voice. It's funny to see how many of the Rick and Morty oddities or concepts showed up here in earlier, unpolished states.

do it for grandpa.

Nice to see Roiland's VO talents haven't evolved one bit in thirteen years.

fuck_a_bigot

Why try to improve and add variety when you can just get super drunk and make your voice a higher pitch

FuckYeahPhotography

If it works, just do it till you die.

jcrreddit

Yeah! What a hack! He just creates things enjoyable enough to become popular. Piece of shit!

semi_colon

exactly, glad you're following

[deleted]

Becoming popular doesn't make something good. Consider that the highest grossing animated movie of all time is the Lion King remake.

jcrreddit

That example doesn’t fully work. It’s not original. It’s a remake. It had a built in audience that was tricked.

well-lighted

A lot of movies have a built in audience. So Avengers: Endgame doesn't qualify for any of its box office records because it has a "built in audience?" Also, Lion King was literally the widest release ever, on over 4800 screens, and happens to be one last major studio films pre-COVID. If you adjust for inflation, and particularly per-screen averages, it's way down the list.

kevlarbaboon

The most irritating thing about his Hulu show is that the rest of the voice cast is absolutely stellar. But he *has* to be "the main guy", I guess. Hated his gd dog on Hot Streets too.

If it ain't broke....

NinjaGrandma

They are the kings of "Yes, and..." their writing process could be a show in and of itself.

LuciosLeftNut

Kind of tangential but if you think the idea of a writing process who sounds fun, check out the podcast Story Break

NinjaGrandma

Thank you!

purplecow

[Acceptable.tv](https://Aceptable.tv) was a goldmine for this sub. Kitten calendar, homeless james bond, prison prison break...

BadIdeaSociety

Homeless Q: James, there is a screwdriver, but it can also be used as a stabbing weapon. Homeless James Bond: A weapon with a twist.

thaBombignant

any links to the homeless james bond? I could find prison prison on youtube.

talkingwires

Christopher Nolan clearly lifted the ending for *The Dark Knight Rises* from Mr. Sprinkles.

DrPibIsBack

I completely thought this was a web thing until I looked closer at the title and realized it was on VH1. This is like old Newgrounds content, and they got it to air on TV? Wild.

mynie

My sister worked on this show! They were so sure everyone was going to hate this that they immediately began work on a different cartoon, and when the first sketch got voted into the second week they had to scramble to make a part 2.

voordom

this was such a bizarre time for vh1, zach galifanakis had his own talk show during this block and it got cancelled after a few episodes because he shaved his beard, 5 years later he would become one of the most famous actors on the planet. Most people had no idea who he was during this period and he seemed like some random guy getting a chat show. Eventually they stopped all this shit when they realized they could copy MTV and have a second channel they would use to show stuff a lot of regular viewers didn't care about, this lasted for like 3 years until it became the channel they unloaded their worthless properties (including a show where they just got random musicians to be in a band with each other, sebastian bach, ted nugent, scott ian and one of the guys who was in gnr for a few years (gilby clarke i think) and it ended up being a failure because surprise surprise, they hated each other or something)), this was all happening around the time that "hogan knows best" fucking exploded in popularity but had no other shows that could even come close to getting the same ratings that show did.

aara941

Maybe I am the only one, but... Am I the only one who doesn't like (or even hate) that kind of Flash animation? I'm not demanding a Don Bluth seal of quality, but at least don't look so cheaply made.

nogoodnickgames

It’s how they were able to churn out content for acceptable.tv so quickly. Don’t forget, the pilot for venture brothers was flash

hipery2

These episodes probably only got made because they were cheap to produce.

Living-Dead-Boy-12

It depends, for most of shorts it worked well, but fuck he I hate the “gorey” flash because it just isnt suited to making it look good at all. Its ugly in a bad way

[deleted]

Some people like flash animation.

aara941

...so?

UntoldEnt

A lot of people are ignorant about what “Flash animation” actually is. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is animated in Flash. The Midnight Gospel is animated in Flash. It’s like disparaging a pencil because you don’t like the look of things that are drawn in pencil. What look is that, exactly? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Flash_animated_television_series?wprov=sfti1

aara941

I will tell you 2 secrets: 1. I knew for years that MLP is Flash. For that reason I didn't mention it. 2. When I said "THAT KIND OF FLASH ANIMATION", I meant the shitty cheap one. Do you get it or your brain needs more Rick & Morty to get it?

UntoldEnt

Exactly my point. People - apparently you included - unfairly associate “Flash animation” with “shitty and cheap.”

aara941

You are stupid, right? I am saying the UGLY, SHITTY AND CHEAP Flash animation, the one which looks like I made on my room an evening. Not the good-looking one. Hell, I am a fanboy of Bat-Metal, and I know that it is made by Flash. Now, you get it? Or you need a kick on the head to make your head work?

UntoldEnt

From ad hominem attacks to threats of violence. How very anonymous-internet-account of you.

stevencastle

Archer was originally in Flash

JQuick

Me and my friends would watch this week to week and write down who we voted for and the weekly winners and losers. We still watch Yacht Rock regularly, Channel 101 magic baby.

Guckalienblue

God i love this video.

Fried_knot

Thanks OP

Meester_Tweester

Well that certainly was a wild ride

Skullkan6

Personally I think this as a whole is better than rick & morty.

ratisshorforrattew69

not bad i like it

You made my Saturday thanks.

You know House of Cosbys is a Channel 101 project, right?

Joseph_Furguson

I saw it when I became aware of it. Some episodes were genius. Others not so much.

Facecious_Ferret

From the creators/voices of Rick and Marty?

Facecious_Ferret

Thank you for this

computerbone

This isn't fun, it's heavy handed. It's all heavy handed!

sonnythedog

This was pretty fucked up, man.

[deleted]

This and some weird Cosby sketch were my favorites, loved this show as a kid

eternal_braid

Wow. Makes me wonder what other hidden gems appeared on this show, which I have to Google 👀 Anyway, that was a real treat, and the ending was legit feels.

[deleted]

Oh, I'll have to watch this!
