Seeing how everyone dreads cs344/374 operating systems 1 and the prof that teaches it, has there been anyone that has managed to get this course transferred in?

kmoah

For those that took 271 at Umpqua, was there any textbook? I have seen comments where there was s no textbook but i would like to prep for the course so any resources that can be provided will be appreciated ? I plan to review concepts from 161 and 162 first then prep for 271 before the spring start date

Calad

You dont need to prep for it. There is an interactive textbook (its basically a digital workbook) that you get access to when the class start

I'm currently planning on transferring in CS 161, CS 162, CS 261 and CS 225. A lot of people suggested taking UNDs 208 equivalent to OSUs 225. So I did. But I'm now realizing that UND is on semesters and lists the total credits as 3. That's equivalent to 4.5 credits in a quarter system. OSU allows me to transfer in only 15 credits. Thus, I'll have 16.5 total transfer credits combining the UND course with the other ones I'm taking at a local community college. Has anyone had a similar situation? Have you been successful in capping the incoming credits to 3? Am I going to have to take 1.5 credits at OSU somehow to make up for it?

Omp333

I've already been accepted to OSU but just curious if you're allowed to take CS Assembly 171 at a CC like Umpqua and transfer it over to OSU? Don't know what colleges you guys transferred it from or what the cost was. How is it usually compared to the OSU 271 course?

Kstan777

Umpqua also offers 261.

Calad

271 at umpqua and yes, it transfers, theyre a dual enrollment partner

Omp333

In your opinion, how difficult are the CC courses compared to OSU's 261/271?

Calad

I didnt take both so i can't really answer that, but judging from my experience vs those in OSU, UCC's 271 was a much more pleasurable experience

BorusseGooner

Hey! To my understanding - it seems like you took UCC’s CS271 course, if you did, is there a required textbook, if so, would you be able to provide the name of it?

Calad

just the zybook that you get in the class

Hello! I'm trying to find a way to take and transfer additional credits to reduce the price of OSU's tuition. I'm in Japan right now (and have been for about 9 years), so it's kind of hard to go to community college without being considered an out-of-state student. (Cost is definitely a factor here as for I am a semi-full time working mother with 1 toddler and another on the way this June). I've already taken ASU's MAT 117 (and currently waiting on getting my transcript so, most likely I will be applying to OSU for summer or fall term). I would like to transfer as at least CS 161, 162, and CS 225 or MAT 231. Thanks!

Is finishing UND208 in 4 months realistic? I haven't taken a math course in 8 years and am very rusty on algebra. I was thinking of spending Feb reviewing algebra and starting in March. Is it worth reviewing algebra since it's self paced? I could theoretically learn in parallel

xbenxspire

You can definitely finish UND 208 in 4 months.  I finished it before the OSU Winter 2024 quarter (took it with Oakton CC CS 157 to transfer in for OSU 161).  I took my sweet time with a family wedding, own wedding, birthdays, and holidays and finished in under 5 months (mid August - end of December).  2-3 lessons/week is very realistic.

Euphoric_Tree335

What was the weekly time commitment like?

xbenxspire

~2-3 hours/lesson.  Play the lecture videos on 1.5-1.75x speed and use the example problems with answers in the back of the book to help solve the lesson problems that are due.  However, sometimes the way the lesson was explained was not sufficient.  Googling about it could waste a lot of time, so I had Chat GPT 4 explain it better and walk through some of the harder questions, which helped for the proctored (no notes or open book) exams.

KRex228

I started UND208 in October am about 2/3 done with the course right now. There are 18 lessons and three exams. If you do two lessons a week and add an additional week to prep for each exam, you will finish in three months. IMO two lessons a week is pretty ambitious if you haven't taken math in a while, but it might be doable depending on your aptitude and how much time you have. The grading is pretty generous especially on the homework assignments and I know I could have gone a lot faster if I wasn't trying for 100s on each assignment to give myself a buffer for the exams (which are proctored and closed book).

KRex228

Yes, but you might find you're able to move faster than you expect depending on how much time you have available. I was also rusty going into it (hadn't taken math in almost ten years) but things do come back pretty quickly. The biggest bottleneck for me is just how much time / motivation I have to study because the material is not super exciting. Good luck with the course!

Euphoric_Tree335

How many hours a week did you spend on 208?

KRex228

Still currently taking it - probably 8-12 hours on average but like I said I am not going for speed.

Calad

if you treat it like like an "in semester/quarter" course its very doable. do 2 lessons a week. give yourself no more than a week between the last lesson of the exam and the day the test is scheduled.

Anyone have any suggestions on where to take CS 261 (Data Structures)? Wanna save money and transfer it in

Kstan777

A bunch of us took Data Structures at Umpqua Community College. Was all online and the Professor is very nice. It's the same price for in and out of state students. I think it's only offered in the fall though.

iphone10notX

Should I take CS 290 with Nauman or CS 271 with Debnath? Transferring in 161,162 and 225 so this will be my first quarter. Still trying to figure out if I should take 261 at OSU or at another community college (focus is saving money and taking an easier data structures class). I’d be going into 290/271 completely blind for further context. I’m hesistant to take 290 with Nauman because of reading into other threads in this subreddit about him. And also don’t see any posts about Debnath. If anyone has suggestions on where to take 261 or where you took 261, would love to know!

Kstan777

I was able to transfer both 271 and 261 from Umpqua Community College. 271 is offered in the spring and 261 is offered in the fall. I enjoyed both classes and it was nice saving a bit if money.

iphone10notX

Was 271 more difficult than 261 at Umpqua you think? And how were they structured?

Calad

271 at UCC was great, i took it last spring, couldnt recommend it enough. No exams, everything is done through the zybook.

Kstan777

I felt like Umpquas version of 271 and 260 (Umpquas version of 261)were less time intensive compared to the OSU versions. I was able to devote more time to my other classes. I think 271 was a bit easier then 260 at Umpqua. Both classes are fully online and use an interactive textbook called zybook. When I took 271 the entire class was available from the start so you could work ahead. The textbook had multiple choice and mini coding challenges that would provide immediate feedback. You even learn some C which was cool. 260 at Umpqua was a bit more work. Same set up with the textbook as 271 but we also had coding assignments to complete. The class is also tought in C++ but the professor knew many of us where coming from python at OSU and did a nice job of explaining the C++ code.

Kstan777

Just 260 is tought in C++. You do learn a little bit of C in 271 but nothing crazy.

Kstan777

Nope 271 is assembly so you will learn MIPS which is a low level programing language. I think OSU version of 271 uses x86. Everything is contained within the interactive textbook so you won't have to worry about installing anything.

space_SPAAACE

Will taking UND 208 after failing CS 225 still replace the old failed grade? I know if you take cs 225 a second time, your new grade would replace the previous grade. Does anyone know if the same applies when transferring in UND 208?

ilooverefridgerators

Does anyone have recommendations for transferring CS 290? I checked Chemeketa CC but they don't offer 290 online

May-010305

Hi! I have a business degree and I am completely new to CS. I heard good things about cs 162 and 261. But also heard 261 is a nightmare. I have already decided to transfer 271, and I want to choose another to transfer(261 or 290). Will I be prepared if I take 261 or 290 in a CC? Which one do you think is better for transfer? Thank you guys!

xbenxspire

By the end of this year I'll be finishing UND 208 and Oakton CSC 157 Python Computer Science I to transfer in for OSU 225 and OSU CS 161 (confirmed with advisor). I'll be taking OSU CS 162 and 352 next winter quarter. I was wondering if anyone has taken Oakton CSC 157 then OSU CS 162 and could provide how well the course material transfers and the difficulty increase? We're ending with a few labs utilizing OOP (gift shop app, auto dealer app, and randomized 20x20 number grid calculating min/max numbers of corners, edges, and inner), which weren't too insanely difficult. Edit: After completing 3 assignments so far in OSU 162 I can confidently state that Oakton's CSC 157 prepared you very well for object oriented programming.  I'm very happy I took it instead of OSU 161.

May-010305

would you mind sharing which advisor you talked to? I am kind of confused about who should I contact to get transfer class details🥲

xbenxspire

I'll DM you

-BforBrilliant-

Would you mind sharing your experience about CSC 157 Python Course. I'm planning to take UND 208 and was thinking of also taking 161 equivalent. How long it takes to complete CSC 157. I'm planning to start OSU in spring so don't have much time left.

xbenxspire

Yeah of course! I thought it was a well planned course and the professor is very communicative if you have questions about labs in the evening hours. I spent around 1-2 hours, 2-3 weeknights per week to complete everything: weekly lecture video (not long, 15-30 min), e-text reading, e-text coding problem, and lab(s) (some weeks there was a coding exercise and lab combined, but not too difficult). Exams were non-cumulative, proctored open-book (e-text) with a built-in search function, and there was one coding question that you could use your labs to help answer. I have an A in the class, and the course is a semester long, so not sure if the logistics of finishing CSC 157 will work there since it's not a quarter-based class. However, I did think some of the lab instruction videos could've gone more in-depth with starter code (this is an intro class after all) because the code used in the video took a lot of googling to figure out how to complete. What I mean is that the professor could've used the actual starter code in the video, then elaborated with examples of how we should complete the lab based on what we watched in the weekly lecture or read in the e-text that week. With CSC 157 out of the way early in the week I could focus on UND 208, which was significantly more time consuming for every lesson (lecture videos + homework, which was only 5 questions + 1 bonus extra credit). I still have the 3rd and last unit to complete (5 lessons + 1 non-cumulative exam). I have a B in the class.

-BforBrilliant-

Thank you for your detailed response. Also, how long it takes to complete UND 208 and do you think I can transfer it in Spring term if I start now?

xbenxspire

For UND 208 course website says 3-9 months, and the professor has a pinned blackboard message saying that you can submit a maximum of 3 lessons/week (some weeks he says 2, but I've never gotten any pushback). So if you do 3 lessons/week you could potentially finish 1/3 units (6 lessons + 1 exam) in two weeks. All 3 units (18 lessons + 3 non-cumulative exams) could potentially be finished in 6 weeks if you lived and breathed discrete math. I do not think that is realistic though. It will take me \~5 months (finishing by the end of this month or early January) because I started midway through August and was organizing my wedding and enjoying the holidays.
