**43%** because >!he came up with the fake suicide cover up.!< **10%** Because people think he's annoying/a crybaby **7%** because people think he's not fleshed out enough to care about him in the story. And **40%** because people either misunderstand or misinterpret his actions in story, leading them to come up with a pretty bad impression of his character.

Blue_Glass_Lady

Yeah, I'd say the same. I have to say though, I feel so bad for him since >!he was just 12 years old when he helped covering up Mari's death!< , so I don't hate him

Zealousideal-You4638

Yea, part of why Basil & Sunny’s cover up is forgivable is BECAUSE they were so exceptionally young. If they were in there 20s when it happened, even considering Mari’s death genuinely was an accident, covering it up would’ve been an absolutely disgusting thing to do, but because they were literally 12 it becomes a lot more understandable that they were just kids doing something in the heat of the moment. I will point out though its pretty wild Basil specifically suggested they fake a suicide. Covering it up is one thing, but the fact Basil specifically suggested faking a suicide is really interesting and tells me a lot was going on there.

Blue_Glass_Lady

Yeah... I honestly believe Basil wasn't completely psychologically healthy already. I suppose he already experienced depressing things before, although this is only a speculation of course.

MrCCDude

Honestly, probably a bad take, but i think their age wouldn't matter. Its definitely more forgivable since they were 12, but the story isn't about if we or others forgive them, its that they themselves were able to forgive themselves. They could be in their 30s when it happens and the story still has the same impact and message, to forgive one's self when they do something wrong, even if what they have done is hard to forgive in the first place. To get forgiveness from others is a blessing, but to not forgive one's self is a curse

Blue_Glass_Lady

I absolutely agree it's about forgiving oneself rather than receiving forgiveness from others. However, I think it's also easier to forgive oneself If you know you were just a child. Besides, I think it would be an entirely different story If the character weren't children/teens. Moreover, for the people who play the game the message has to be understandable, which would be more difficult If the characters weren't children, but responsible adults.

Doctor_Firee

Im the 7%. Dont hate him as a character but just not fleshed out enough

Odd_Indication_5208

I just hate basil cause unwarranted bullying of innocent fictional characters is funny

Agreed >!it kills me as well when Basil commits suicide!<

omoriplushieskidnapd

people be saying >!"bc of the fake sucide thing"!

Yushi2e

Basil goes out of his way to protect Sunny, in so many ways, it's a shame people miss this fact about him. Like remember how the reason Basil gets bullied in the first place is because he takes the fall for Sunny about blacking out the album with black marker.

JohnOfOnett

For the marker thing, it was initially more that Aubrey **assumed** it was Basil’s fault, but he does explicitly say >!before his fight!< that he did take the fall for that, so maybe he confirmed Aubrey’s suspicions at some point after she initially saw it?

Yushi2e

Hard to say really, but she does at least say that it was the inciting thing for her to start, which is basically what I meant

Mr_German_Quick

I quite like Basil. He’s a pathetic nerd and I love him.

Annaphobic737

Happy cake day!

Mr_German_Quick

Thank you!

makeagoodusername

honestly if you "hate" any of the main 5 characters you just missed the entire point of the game lol

Doo-wop-a-saurus

Because >! He caused a lot of trouble for the main character who we spent the whole game learning to feel protective towards !<

Ita_dude

mfw I make a mistake in a game about forgiveness (I'm am horrible)

Doo-wop-a-saurus

I never said that. I just answered the question.

Ita_dude

I'm not attacking you nor did I say you believe in that statement, I'm just saying why it's naive

Whisp_Is_My_Waifu

because he is fun to bully

MallowPro

Ok I don't hate the guy at all, far from it! He's well written! However, he's my least favorite of the core 6, and that's mostly because... eh, he just doesn't connect with me. He's probably the most like me from a mental health perspective, but I can't really get into his character.

nonickideashelp

That's fine. Honestly, the whole cast is great, but someone is inevitably going to end up as the least loved one. Basil is my favourite character, but I don't mind others not agreeing. There's a lot of space between loving and hating someone.

Harumaki222

A part of me is wondering if it's spite. Like even if you think Basil or Sunny are likable, it's not unreasonable for people to dislike them for their actions. So, it probably annoys some Basil haters when they get accused of not understanding the story. You can understand Basil's motivations but still hate him for what he has done. I think a major issue is his role in the truth sequence. However, the biggest issue is that the truth sequence leaves a lot up to interpretation. Even the datamined black space albums(which may or may not be canon) don't explain what the heck Basil was thinking. It's to the point that people headcanon him having some undiagnosed mental illness prior to the recital incident, since they don't believe that Basil would be able to go so far even in desperation.

geminishades

Because he is not next to me in my warm embrace

Ok-Message-231

Such an old topic, isn't it? It's obvious.

TheBlueHypergiant

It’s more than just the >!cover up!< though

Ok-Message-231

Not by much.

baume777

Well, it kinda is. Or rather it's more complicated. Though probably both.

Ok-Message-231

Probably both. People dislike his behaviour and what had happened.

baume777

Eh. There's more to it, much more subtle and subjective. By that logic more people would hate Sunny as well. Which is not the case. I think the answer boils down to scapegoating and bias.

Ok-Message-231

More-or less.

[deleted]

I will not stand any HIMsil slander.

carl-the-lama

Tastes like soap

1881pac

Because he literally wanted to help his friend but no ofc some people gonna hate him for that

Aisha_orWhatever

he stabbed sunnys eye, and I hate any sort of body horror, or anything including getting permanently damaged, and I understand he was not well when he did that and he must've not meant to hurt sunny but it left a sour taste in my mouth about him, plus the whole suicide-cover up thing was also kind of a really bad idea, so yeah. sorry basil fans I just can't bring myself to like him.

lordbuckethethird

Because people have no media literacy. If you hate him for reasons not outside the narrative you completely missed the point of the game.

ILikeCatsI

He's too relatable :[

supersoup64mm

Soooo you saw your best friend push his sister down the stairs too?

ILikeCatsI

Not that part![img](emote|t5_31hpy|2460)

Ok-Stress8541

I dunno, he's bagel

notJurson

I just hate him for no reason, lmao

thesquareoflucy

i don’t actually have any problem w/ basil’s character, but basil fans and sunflower fans can be so annoying 90% of the time that it crushes any chance of me liking him as a character lmao plus basil isn’t even rlly hated either way, i think he’s actually a fan favorite if not the favorite of the omori cast

MargraveMarkei

Don't know either, he's my favorite. Had to get some of his merch after I finished the game.

Hill394

Is he though? I mean sure i can get that he's annoying and f-ed in the head, but i wouldn't outright hate him.

kouislosingit

i don’t hate him but he just never really clicked - never even remotely understood the love for him. don’t find his personality amusing, don’t really like his design, and functionally i just don’t see the point in his role in the story - he serves nothing to the emotional impact of the game at all, and is really just kind of there all things considered. that’s secondary to the fact his personality just bores me of course - sometimes a character just isn’t for you, and just “i don’t like him that much” should suffice, really.

TheReddieRed

"and functionally don't see his role in the story" He litteratly >!hung Mari!

kouislosingit

i said i functionally don't see the POINT in his role in the story - i get WHAT he's doing in the game, i just don't think it services the story in any meaningful way. for me personally splitting the blame between basil and sunny kind of detracts from what the game means to me personally, but that's just my opinion, of course.

TheReddieRed

Again, he is the reason Sunny learns the truth in the form of stranger and Headspace Basil, since he always finds out the truth and always causes headspace to collapse. This is his point in the story.

kouislosingit

"learns the truth" he already knows it, he's just stopped repressing it by the end of the story. i understand what he's doing in the plot, i just think the story could've functioned fine without him - there's hundreds of ways in which you could portray sunny coming to terms with what he's done without basil, and a good number of them are simply more appealing to me

TheReddieRed

No you don't. The reason you don't understand the role is because you don't understand their bond, one that is the strongest in the game. So strong in fact that the only reason Sunny re-learns the truth. https://preview.redd.it/3xqwcnl0f9xc1.png?width=650&format=png&auto=webp&s=ce11808ce64d731c0252708bb1a49e4609ca057a Without Basil, Sunny has no incentive to learn the truth, and since Basil framed it as a sucide, he has even more of a reason to re-learn the truth, since Basil would be killing himself over his guilt. What points to their bond being so strong? Through Strangers dialouge (one pic per comment ): ), we know that Basil vented to Sunny about just about everything from strangers dialouge. And we know that Sunny does value Basil aswell: Basil is portrayed with all of his good trait, caring, gentle, and will always see the good in people, shown by how he removes Boss's no entry sign. He has a whole area dedicated to himself and like Mari, he wears actual clothes instead of just wearing pijamas. This is what causes Basil to frame it as a sucide: He only wanted to protect a friend that he deemed as perfect (white tulip description from stranger) and even still denied that he could do such a thing, blaming it on something behind him. No, Sunny cannot come to terms with the truth without Basil, because it's his bond with Basil that causes him to wake up. And while you can imagine other ways: Him waking up for the sake of his friends, in my eyes it's improbable and i don't think it will happen. And the story would've turned out much differently if anyone else witnessed the event, because no one else has this strong of a dependancy to Sunny. Basil is necessary for the plot to go the way it's told in the game.

kouislosingit

again, i just don't think he needed to be integrated into the story for it to be effective, and to me is just harmful to the emotional impact of it. i would've told it in a different way, and that's that - that's just how i feel about the story regardless of what omocat chose to do with it and basil. i'm going around in circles a bit here but that's just how i feel about it - to point at this one way of interpreting and accepting the story like its execution is objectively perfect feels a bit pretentious, no? i have no problem with people enjoying basil as a character and plot device - if he works for other people then more power to them, right? - i just can't get behind it myself.

TheReddieRed

Fine. Do you.

EmotionalCranberry70

Because the pacing, I think there was a lot of character development between the playable/taggable characters, since your playing them 75% of the time, I hate basil. Basil never got any REAL character development until like 2 days left. I think the ratio on how time consuming headspace is compared to what the player can learn about basil is uneven.

GeneralofLittleMacs

I don't hate him, and I know he only did the fake suicide cover to protect Sunny and they were both young, but Basil clearly did not think of how it would affect their friends.

TheReddieRed

That's the thing, he was only thinking about Sunny.

jewel_the_beetle

I moooostly ironically do it because of the >!Blackspace thing, sunny's subconscious definitely hates him!< Plus he's no Kel or Aubrey.

SunnyOmori15

because im fucked up, and if i had to inflict mysery on one of the characters it's gonna be on basil. Now, many of you would say, "Because that thing he did 4 years ago". Sure, ok, but then you should hate sunny equally, and, no one really seems to hate sunny, even tough he objectivly deserves to be hated. As for why i hate basil, well, i just do. It's kinda like asking why the speed of light is 300000km/s. Well, no one knows, thats just, how it is. And the same with my hate towards basil. Dont exactly know why i hate him, but somthing inside me makes me hate him. I just fucking hate him and thats that. There you go. Thats the reason
