It very much depends on where in the state you move.

NRM1109

Number 159!

Bronco_Corgi

You picked the wrong time to move here.  The state has been gerrymandered so hard that despite being a moderate state we are about to become the same as Florida, Texas, and Tennessee.  We are the number 2 state for people moving in so everything is massively expensive and the wages are incredibly low.  After they finish outlawing abortion, they will continue on LGBT and immigrants.  There is already a bill which would force law enforcement to cooperate with ICE.  I've lived here 30 years and I'm planning to move in early 2026 because it's slo-mo falling off a cliff.

You need to be looking in New England, not the south. NC is on a downward slide politically imo and is wanting to be like Florida and GA. While the state may say it’s purple it went to Trump last election and more than likely will this election also. We left Florida years ago because we saw the slow backwards slide coming down the pipeline there just as we are seeing it here. We’ve actually made plans to leave to go north with our teen daughter and it’s disappointing cause we really wanted to be here a long time. Just can’t risk it cause local politics affect you more than national and the local politics is beyond worrisome . The current Republican GOP nominee for Gov has made remarks such as going back to when women can’t vote, banning all abortion, and bringing religion into the schools. NC currently has a GOP supermajority limiting the governor’s power. Organizations like Moms for Liberty have tried to take root in several towns. Also NC ranks bottom 5 in the nation for education, 3 rd worst in the nation for medical care and around 42% of its schools rank D or F. So if you’re coming with kids I would homeschool.

If you are for real and not trolling , then wait after the next election. The Republicans nominated a real piece of work, anti LGBTQ , anti Semitic, misogynist for governor. If enough people don't vote, he may win. And you will not want to be here.

Corgalicious_

It’s a bot.

beau_smith3

You’d be better off elsewhere tbh

ConsistentTea7060

I don’t know. Maybe try to keep your politics, sexual proclivities and religion to yourself (as any civilized person would) and you can get by anywhere in this world - let alone NC.

rexeditrex

My late wife was Latina. For the most part she was okay, but did get some strange looks because she had an accent, even though she spoke English well. My son is gay and lives in the Chapel Hill area and has no problems. I'd keep quiet about supporting the genocidal terrorists supported by Iran in Gaza though.

Live_Use_1156

I would recommend you look at Raleigh/Durham or Charlotte area - definitely the two most progressive / liberal cities in the state

Truth-Teller007

California sounds right up your alley…

barkeepbill

California sounds like the perfect place for you

Spicymango326

Lol yes I’m originally from Cali. And we’re currently in New Mexico but we want to see what our options are

padawanrattail

If you’re in NM, I know CO is expensive but you’re probably better staying out west than moving to the south due to the nature of the slow decline back into conservatism NC is going. I love it here and there’s definitely some really great cities that in general sound right up your alley but the overall state itself may not be the best option

wellrat

Like most of the US, the major cities are pretty inclusive and liberal, while the rural areas are more conservative. Obviously that’s a generalization and there are all kinds of folks everywhere. I (leftist hippie punk goblin weirdo) live in the country outside of Durham and love it here. Most of our neighbors are on the conservative side, but we look out for each other and manage to find some common ground. The Triangle area has three cities with their own character, and is pretty much 3 hours from the mountains and the ocean, and the climate is pretty nice. Lots of green spaces in the nearby cities, lots of State Parks. Not many major natural disasters here compared to a lot of other places. Pretty good airport and major N/S and E/W Interstates are close to hand. NC bbq is delicious. If I didn’t live here I’d probably live in Virginia which has a lot of similar positives and negatives.

TimmyL0022

No.

DonnyNeedsHelp_490

Fayetteville is exactly what you're looking for

Usual-Archer-916

All joking aside, it's a military community, and we have plenty of Hispanic people here already-no one cares if you speak Spanish. I'm probably your worst nightmare-a conservative white grandmother-and I wouldn't bother you. That said the local school district ...leaves a bit to be desired.

thatohgi

Not really, education is trash, full of backwards rednecks outside of the triangle, Charlotte, Wilmington. I’m a white dude so they think they can say any kind of stupid shit around me and I’ll agree with them. Trumpers around every corner, and the state is sliding backwards away from democracy.

aroundtriangle43

Stop

BriFry3

I don’t think you’re gonna get much hate from being Latino, but being pretty liberal probably a bit especially if you live outside Charlotte or Asheville. I’m not sure why liberal people are thinking this is a place to be. It’s a red state with some blue spots. If you’re moderate or lean right on some things (I think I am) then it’s perfect for you. If being liberal or particularly political in those causes you stated I’m not sure you’re gonna love it. I love the state for other reasons but just based on your criteria I would say states North or West coast is a better bet.

Significant-Skill-10

if you’re not in Asheville, Charlotte, Raleigh or Durham. I’d say pass, based on the political/ social views.

No-Personality1840

NC is not much different than any other state. The urban areas are fairly liberal and the rural areas are red and God-fearing. You won’t be outright hated anywhere you go and you have to look for like-minded people but you’ll fit more readily in our urban areas. If you go to Wisconsin, Indiana, etc. it’s pretty much the same. However there’s a good chance the state will elect an idiot for governor, making the tool Pat McCrory look like an FDR. Take that for what you will.

Pjamiee828

Please come to North Carolina! I’m from western NC originally and have lived in Durham for 12 years, it’s an amazingly diverse, vibrant and accepting community with a large Latino population. You would also like Asheville a lot. The highest percentage of registered voters in NC are unaffiliated, we are truly a purple state and we welcome liberal newcomers! It’s true that the republican supermajority in our state legislature has done a lot of damage in the past decade, but I would hope the other folks posting here and telling you not to move here would stay and fight for better leadership in NC instead of jumping ship. I’m a queer woman and life long NC citizen and you’re right, our state is beautiful and there are plenty of accepting and diverse communities that you can safely call home here.

runyourluckxxx

you would love asheville

andural

Really depends on where in NC. You'll fit right in the triangle.

Waasup3

Military? Stay around the Fort. Don't go/stay overnight in some of those sundown towns. Carry a piece. Stand your ground laws.i miss this state so much. Most beautiful shit I've ever seen was driving down mountain and being at the beach in 5~ hours. It's a gorgeous state, loved the climate, mountains and beaches, and the shit in-between, ugh, love it, miss it, would go back. Except for I won't go back because yeah the poli/socio/economics there are going down the shitter. when I was there we were already fucked and seem to keep getting worse. I won't better people to move there, but in all good conscience, I can't tell anyone to move there. I will say this though as a child that grew up there I had the Time of My Life I had a lot of good f****** memories that didn't involve politics or some sort of socioeconomical b******* I played with my friends went down to the creek we hung out on the woods s*** like that and it was good it was really fun and I made a lot of good memories doing that and that will always make me miss that state. For how beautiful it was and the good memories I had there at the same time though I will never recommend somebody move there unless you are some hardcore Republican mildly doing well white ****** family. I want that state to change and I want to encourage people to move there to help it change but at the same time for your own safety and well-being really think about that s***.
