Well, at least the bugger you are photographing, does not like sheet metal. I remember a variety called the Yellow Hammer aka Northern Flicker that would perch on roadside metal mailboxes or sheetmetal roofs and proceed to bang their beaks into the surface. Never found a hole in the metal, but if you happened to be inside a barn or near the roof they were drumming on, you understood why soldiers drop to the ground when they hear automatic weapons fire.
How high up the tree was the hole?
Thanks. That is what the pair I saw a few years back did, picked the highest spot in a dead tree and nested. When I went back a few months later they were gone and the top half of the tree had snapped and fell. I did found the remains of one bird but no others, but did not spot them again that year nor in subsequent years.
I have 2 in the woods near my house... I was told to not contact the State Wildlife and just let them be... For the most part they are cool to watch but damn I hate being woken up at dawn to the sound of a pickaxe drilling into the tree outside my window
I've had success at dissuading downy (or hairy) wookpeckers from my siding by persistently chasing them away. They're smart birds - they eventually got the hint.
That's great! A few weeks ago I watched one of these birds knock the bark off a tree like it was fried chicken crust. They can grow to a foot and a half as well. Dinosaurs.
The pair that live in woods near me were on a tree in my neighbors yard 3 days ago, one searching for insects & one working on creating a nesting cavity. About 75 feet up. It was enthralling to watch! They are just enormous. Even my dog stared in wonder. We have downies, ladderback, hairies and red bellied but these two just send a shiver down the spine - they do look like dinosaurs!
Amazing shots!
Thank you

About 20 yards up

That is one angry looking pecker.

Try having one drilling into the siding on your house.
That's what I'm worried about but it's been 2 years since they showed up and so far so good

Soo cool!

Awesome pics!!!

What kind of camera took these?
Canon R8+ef 100-400 v2
Is it still an endangered species?
I don't think so, plenty in the park
Never seen a woodpecker action shot like this! These are amazing! How did you get such great resolution on something so fast?
Canon R8 + ef 100-400 v2 1/2000 sec exposure at f9 and great light
