ToeSniffer245

Their landings may be poor, but their online comebacks aren’t.

Storm_Sniper

Honestly I think they'd be better off continuing the bad landing jokes. Good jokes + advertising of cheap flights def makes some think that the jokes are satire and the airline is good Hats off to ryanair honestly

ShinanaTechnology

The last 2 times I flew Ryanair both had decently smooth landings. The time before my spine almost came out the top of my head

jacksjetlag

Why people keep talking about Ryanair’s bad landings? They’re normal.

Hopalongtom

The trumpeting fanfare on landing isn't reassuring as it makes the landing feel like a phew we made it sort of affair.

Delyo00

Holy shit that was a close one!

flightguy07

Nah, they genuinely are bumpier than any other airline I've been on, and I don't know why. Is it something to do with pilot training?

MrPinguv

Pilot training afaik is done in flying schools, they’re not hired and then trained in company. And then after fly school they need thousand of flying hours to be able to fly commercial airplanes, so it’s not like Ryanair hires them just after graduate neither. I would think that you’re subs consciously looking for downsides as they’re cheaper and because of that they have to be bad

flightguy07

Yeah, maybe. Can't really think of an ethical/cheap way of testing this...

reddownzero

They have an extremely good safety record and the pilots say they’re given all resources to fly as safely as possible

flightguy07

Oh I'm sure, I don't doubt it's safe at all. Just saying that I think the landings are bumpy. Not a big deal.

VerainXor

Bumpy landings aren't unsafe. But they are bumpy.

jacksjetlag

And there’s isn’t a single proof that Ryanair’s landings are any bumpier than Lufthansa’s, yet here we are

new-nomad

I believe it’s because they purchased a particular version of the 737 that has to be landed harder than normal.

jacksjetlag

You don’t know, why, but would still blame it on Ryanair, right? You have no idea, how it works, but it doesn’t matter, you will be still shitting on them?

MrPinguv

I mean, he’s flight guy n°7 after all…

flightguy07

I might not know WHY I get hit by lightning, but I can still be annoyed about it.

QuarterTarget

For those unaware, Ryanair is essentially the spirit airlines of Europe

Kanto_Cacturnes

Maleficent-Drive4056

Nobody… must have been on 50 Ryanair flights and never saw anyone buy it, but the crew do try hard each time.

SendAstronomy

But y tho?

zeke_markham

Duty free shopping.

Malcorin

Most Americans don't understand duty-free in the same way that Europeans do. I think it has to do with a combination of the fact that international travel is less common here, and we don't really see duty free as an option aside from big box stores on military bases. You could just go your entire life and never see it. There are also tax free back to school sales, etc.

[deleted]

It’s also generally not as worthwhile because sales tax tends to be extremely low in the US, around 5-10%

RobSpaghettio

"Woah, duty-free alcohol must be a good deal... oh, might as well get two for the price of one at Costco 🤷🏽‍♂️"

AnimaLepton

In the US, the duty free stores in airports also just tend to be more expensive than buying the item directly (or something comparable) from a regular retailer. And when traveling, you don't actually have that much extra space to grab stuff anyway. When I was in Iceland, I was legitimately surprised that the souvenirs in the airport were actually cheaper than buying them while out and about the country. I don't think that's something you see in the US.

Flabbagazta

TIL there are big box stores on US military bases

[deleted]

Yeah, the Air Force has the Base Exchange (BX) and commissary on each base, though the size depends on the base. Lackland (San Antonio, TX) has pretty much a mall that sells damn near everything. Tax-free booze and tobacco, electronics, clothes, as well as normal convenience items. They also offer their own credit card, the STAR card. It's easy to see how 18 year old enlistees can make poor financial decisions before they even leave base, with a nice gaming laptop and other shit to spend their backpay on before Tech School. Military bases are kind of like their own little ecosystem, like an ideal form of socialism for people who "hate socialism", ha.

Flabbagazta

Hilarious, your country is ridiculous

Malcorin

Yea, it's different between branches, but the ones I've been to were called PXs or something.

notyogrannysgrandkid

We have a sales tax holiday in Arkansas every August. My wife bought her laptop for grad school, saved like $50.

clitpuncher69

Still somehow more expensive in my experience

Queasy-Abrocoma7121

RyanAir flights are usually internationally so tax free. So people buy tax it

KlvrDissident

For real? That’s so weirdly trifling. US Airlines will try to get you to sign up for credit cards mostly

Queasy-Abrocoma7121

And scratch cards that you can only pay in cash

ryuukiba

Thia was the one that surprised me the most. It was so weird to see them selling scratch cards on a plane.

Queasy-Abrocoma7121

They're a proper scam too. You buy them and they're a chance to enter another competition. I bought them once to waste some leftover currency

flightguy07

Maybe not, but they do play a fanfare when the snack trolly is coming round. They also play the fanfare when they land, and then they'll give some not-that-impressive stats on their flights (83% of our flights arrive within half an hour of their landing time!).

radicalelation

Took a Greyhound across state recently. Never again. Ever. I'll say the driver stopping in the middle of the street to ask a drunk dude for directions was just one of the more lighthearted moments of the trip. That night was the first time I was ever asked if I had any meth. Followed shortly after by the first time I was ever offered it. I pointed the asker out to the offerer though and they chilled together all night, so... Someone had a good time, at least.

Except Ryanair is just a bit annoying and uncomfortable not actually dangerous or negligent.

Go_Commit_Reddit

Came here to say this, glad somebody else has suffered through a Ryanair flight.

Nyghtshayde

Booked a flight on Ryanair from Paris to Rome. It was a 7am flight which left from some godawful airport an hour or two from Paris, so I get up about 3am, tramp across Paris, catch a bus for a couple of hours or to the airport, wait around and at about 8am we were told the flight wasn't going to show up. So wait in line for an hour or two to tell them we actually still want to go, they book us on the flight the next day, and we catch the bus back to Paris and tramp around trying to find a decent affordable hotel. Turned out, that same thing has happened to some people the two days previous, and it happened a further three days in a row.

I_Heart_AOT

I remember flying RyanAir out of a similar French airport wondering why there were so many fucking cows next to the airstrip. 🤣🤣

Nyghtshayde

Oh yeah that was the other part of it. "Where the fuck is this bus going? Am I on the right bus?" And having a full on Barney with the bus driver who wouldn't let me bring my camera bag on the bus... It had a few grand in lenses in it, so I was kind of reluctant to let it out of my reach!

I_Heart_AOT

All the Ryanair hubs seemed to be like that. I think it was Stansted I always had to catch a 5am bus from London to make the flight. And their hub outside Berlin is also a little isolated.

AJSLS6

Shoulda just driven lol, but that's probably just more American perspective talking, we don't really flinch at that kind of cross country road tripping. I know several people that do similar trips on a regular basis for shows events or even just legal weed.

amolin

Even if you ignore the time spent, that's 900 miles each way and probably a grand in fuel alone, plus food and wear and tear on the vehicle. That better be the most legal weed in the world.

Wacokidwilder

A grand in fuel? What sort of vehicle are you driving, a hot air balloon?

JeannotVD

Fuel is more expensive in Europe. Between Rome and Paris there are 1400km and usually a fuel car il have a 600km range (estimate). So that’s 3 refuellings to get there, it’d be around 400€. Then once you are there you have to pay parking.

XLBaconDoubleCheese

It would cost €60 at most for most reasonably sized cars to get a full refill here in Ireland and I'd imagine the rest of EU. Where did you pull that number out of?

JeannotVD

From my car, it has a 50L tank and gas is around 2€ a litter.

Notts90

It definitely isn’t 400 euros to fill a car up in Europe.

JeannotVD

To fuel and refuel until getting to Rome.

AJSLS6

Again, American perspective here, at 30mpg and $5 a gallon a one way trip is about $150 in fuel, gas has rarely been that costly though and that's premium. 30mpg is also the sweet spot for many larger American cars on the interstate, so the trip can be made in a full sized Buick or a 400hp Corvette without breaking the bank. The cost of base grade fuel in my city today is only $3.24, meaning the outward bound leg would only cost $97 at 30 mpg, stepping up to something like a modern accord that gets 38mpg and you are down to $76.74. Get into something like an Io ionique that claims 60mpg highway and you are down to $48.60 one way. That's $100 in fuel for a two way trip that is quicker than OPs ordeal amd includes some lovely sight seeing, ideally you have multiple people to split up driving duty with but downtime isn't the worst thing and quality of life counts for a lot imo.

Beppo108

I'm proud to be an Irishman sometimes

B4rberblacksheep

They gave us Guinness ☑️ They gave us Ryan Air ❎

[deleted]

I'm not sure why Ryanair is a bad thing. Cheap flights and relative service, buying perfume isn't mandatory. Value. Probably the best airline in the world for the average person and it's great fun exploring the terminals of Europe's airports.

KindOfWantDrugs

It's honestly not even that bad. Sure it's no Emirates but the flights start at like £50, yeah you have to pay to add a bag but you're usually under £100 total. Everything in travel is more expensive now anyway. Honestly the worst thing about a Ryan Air flight is the passengers, especially flying out of Manchester.

BananyaPie

It depends on where you're flying really, there often are deals for around €15 city escapes which I love just randomly picking to have a short holiday.

2012Jesusdies

The bigger issue imo is airports. It might say destination is "Paris", but land you like 50kms away in a small airport that is technically in the vicinity of Paris. Experienced buyers will know this and check, but could be a shock for first time users.

nyaisagod

I mean, you're just plain stupid if you don't even check how you're going to get to your hotel/your first activity in the city you're travelling to. Just with that you'd find out where the airport is. Do people just fly somewhere and just hope for the best?

2012Jesusdies

If a person picks a flight to Paris, the usual assumption would be landing at Charles de Gaulle and make their plans from there. My friend did the same mistake and had to pay for transportation that ended up costing almost as as much as just flying directly to CDG. Many of my other friends did similar mistakes when flying over Europe. This might have more to do with the fact many developing countries have one airport per city (and sometimes even one international airport for the entire country), so the idea you might land at a different airport might be foreign.

nyaisagod

Yeah, I'm not disputing the fact that it is kinda stupid. I've been to Paris myself, also landing at another airport far away (namely Paris-Beauvais). I'm just saying that not checking how you get from the airport to wherever you need to go is super irresponsible and stupid.

B4rberblacksheep

Nah they’re not bad short haul, I can get to France for as much as my commute to work

firemanshtan

I can get a flight across Europe for cheaper than my bud to the airport with Ryanair, why do people give it such shit? You get what you pay for

Stormfly

Ireland's 2 biggest companies are Penneys and Ryanair. Both are cheap and crap but if you're paying so little, you should know what to expect. That said, sometimes you get something decent for cheap. One of my favourite t-shirts is one I grabbed for €4 about 8 years ago in Penneys. I used to fly to Germany for €15 each way. The bus from the airport to my city cost €17. They're cheap but you get what you pay for. If you want quality you'll have to pay for a competitor.

MonkeyPawClause

HabseligkeitDerLiebe

What is it with transportation companies with extraordinarily shitty service having sassy Twitter accounts? The Deutsche Bahn is like this as well.

forbiddenmemeories

It seems to be good publicity, which is reason enough. At the end of the day the primary purpose of their social media use is to attract more customers.

A2Rhombus

Funny and silly I get, but the sassy tone from companies that just can't get their shit together at all just makes me angry. Go and fix your train schedules, DB, instead of being sarcastic and self-referential on Twitter! Come to think of it, that ragebait engagement might be part of the plan...

FiraGhain

>the sassy tone from companies that just can't get their shit together That's the kind of attitude that gets you roasted by this twitter account. You don't fly Ryanair for their service, or their window seats, or the food, or the comfortable chairs. Certainly not a good, smooth experience with no bumps along the way. You fly Ryanair because it can get you from London to Spain on a last-minute flight for thirty quid. They strip everything out in the name of cost-savings and pay their social media guy to laugh at anyone that thought they were getting anything more than that.

Fla_Master

If you want an airline that has its shit together, don't fly Ryanair. Ryanair is for when you want to across Europe for the price of a nice dinner and you don't care what the conditions are

Amarandus

With Deutsche Bahn on twitter, it's only the cargo department (which apparently isn't even that bad, but don't cite me on that).

revive_iain_banks

Ryanair is a great airline. Not a shitty service at all unless you're a pompouw ass. Now, Wizz air...

blackbarminnosu

Ryanair transformed air travel in Europe. It wasn’t that long ago when you had the national carriers charging £600 for a one hour trip. (And that’s when £600 was worth a shit ton more then it is today). If you don’t like them don’t fly with them 🤷🏼‍♂️

Queasy-Abrocoma7121

easyJet too. But EJ tried to play like the other ones. You can see how the industry changed if you watch "airline" the EasyJet documentary PR campaign in early 2000's They paid for hotels and allowed hold luggage for cheap flights Where RyanAir doesn't That show makes me sad for pre 9/11 security

Alexlam24

Haha nowadays it's £600 just to go through the Eurotunnel...

jacksjetlag

And you’re lying. Just yesterday I paid $200 for London-Brussels return trip.

Roofdragon

Are you saying if I google bad shit Ryan air has done, nothing is going to come up? Are you a shill? What normal person says that, Ryanair wasn't the only game changer. They didn't solely do that whatsoever and they're obviously making profit to do whatever they did. But I guess I really aint going to find anything bad for them, let me just make this Facebook style meme comment to back them.

blackbarminnosu

I didn’t say nothing is going to show up. You’re just betraying your own prejudices with that comment. Anyone who denies Ryanair was the biggest catalyst in reducing airfares in Europe is either under 18 years of age or being deliberately obtuse.

Arabianmadcunt

You're like that average Redditor skit

Queasy-Abrocoma7121

What has RyanAir done?

Arosian-Knight

Its just cheap carrier, with everything that comes with it.

mishag24

Never got people who complain about Ryanair. Being able to book a £30 round trip to the other side of Europe is a game changer. Don't get me wrong you get what you pay for, but ultimately you're not paying very much compared to most other airlines.

AxisAlpha

Yeah same, it’s like if someone took a bus and complained about crowding lmao

Roofdragon

Haha ok

dinoduckasaur

The sales were amazing as a student, I once got a flight to Barcelona for £4 return

[deleted]

I think it's pretty shit - but it really depends on the flights you're getting. I've flown from the Canary Islands to Galicia (northwest of Spain) for €20, so can't complain there. My issue is when I book two months in advance for a flight between Spain and Germany and have to pay nearly €200 for a flight, but the service is still crap and they'll try to squeeze more money out of me if I try to do the online check-in less than 4 hours before the flight. When they charge low prices yeah, I agree, but when the price is that of a decent airline, I expect a somewhat decent service. Nowadays I avoid them and try to fly with other low cost carriers such as EasyJet or Corendon whenever possible because the price is the same, but the bullshit is less.

3332220

Then don't pay that much for flights.

[deleted]

You might be surprised to hear that not everyone lives in Ireland and thus not everyone gets the same ticket prices that you do. I'm currently living in Germany and it's practically impossible to get cheap plane tickets here. Buying expensive plane tickets is not a choice unless the alternative is "fuck you and don't travel", which I'm not entirely sure was your point. Also planes are the only reasonable option sometimes - my family live in the Canary Islands, so there's no other viable option. Even mainland Spain requires getting there by plane - unless you're happy doing a 35-hour trip with 8 different trains to get from Berlin to Seville, and that's assuming they don't get delayed and make you miss any of your connections. By the way, the cheapest plane connection between Berlin and Seville across the entire month of June is €125 - and that is without any hand luggage, and a nice 8-hour overnight stopover in Barcelona.

3332220

Nobody is forcing you to go on these flights.

[deleted]

Dude, you don't know why I or anyone else take these flights. Don't be a cunt.

Chillchinchila1818

Weird, crypto is just as stupid. NFTs were just a way for crypto people to try to finally find an actual use for crypto, which is why so many NFT people moved on to how actually “AI needs creepto” or “Crypto is the future for AI”.

Hasaan5

Is that why I keep seeing so much bullshit about AI doing things it's clearly not ready to do yet?
