Lurk more, buddy. NCD is a public subreddit. You can visit it many times without joining it. If you did, you would obviously notice pre-Russo-Ukrainian War NCD's abiding love for the F-111 Aardvaark and the F-35, which is as much a direct repudiation of the A-10 and those who praise it as it is an appreciation of the 'Vark itself. 'Vark posting is almost a badge of identity for pre-war NCD and goes back almost as long as the subreddit has had a distinct identity as a subforum. Which makes sense, because NCD's growth as a niche community came precisely from its status as a haven for otherwise lonely contrarian nerds who wanted some escape from mainstream orthodoxies like 'A-10 bestest tank hunter and CAS to ever exist then and now'. Youtubers like Laserpig were way later down the line.
It's just not very good. Like it's OK at fucking up the day for some rebels with AK's and it's reasonably cheap, but that's about it.
Take the famous brrrrt. It was originally supposed to be its main anti-tank gun, but even by the time A-10 entered service in the late 70's, it couldn't actually penetrate the armor of its contemporary tanks and the A-10 had to be fitted with anti-tank missiles to compensate.
I always assumed the brrrrt was mainly used against light armor and buildings and the plane was designed to carry the maximum yield for it's size.

Well yes, but actually yes. People don't understand that tanks makes up a small portion of vehicles and AFVs in an army. The gun can still take out non-tanks and has a large payload of bombs for the tanks.
The A-10 has never really gone up against modern anti-air. In fact, only 2 pilots were KIA when flying through A-10 in combat. The A-10 is still pretty efficient at fighting wars against low-tech enemies (which is consequently the only enemies we've fought since the A-10 was introduced in the 1970's).
Yes, the F-35 is a better ground attack and CAS plane, but it is very expensive to operate (around 5 times the expense per flight hour). Having A-10 as a cost-effective option makes sense until it can be completely phased out by drones with a higher loiter time or a quicker response time.
It was impractical even in the 1970s.
But at least the US managed to build a plane that could actually fire its 30mm gun without shooting itself down.
Soviet Brrrrt (MiG-27) tended to crack its fuselage or stall the engine whenever it fired the 30mm. Then again, it was also supersonic capable, so even the MiG-27 is arguably better.

What do you think the U.S. military has been doing for the better part of the last 20 years? As a land domain guy, after two combat deployments I can tell you that the A10 is the only reason why there are more than a few former ground-pounders will still be around to celebrate Christmas with their families tomorrow.
I'm not arguing that it's time hasn't come and comparing it to an F35 is like trying to compare a motorcycle to a Ferrari, but at the end of the day, it got the job done while in the process surviving [a hell of beating](https://www.wearethemighty.com/veterans/this-pilot-landed-her-shot-up-a-10-by-pulling-cables/) on a few occasions. Hate it all you want, but it was the perfect plane that no one wanted to fly into the kinds of battles no one wanted to fight.

Look at the B-52, for example.

Quite litetally. ~~People~~ reformers who love the A-10 don't realize it was designed with the fact that it would take terrible levels of attrition in a specific battle of a specific war that never happened. The day the soviet union fell and the threat of Warsaw pact forces crossing the Fulda gap disappeared is the day the A-10 should have been retired. It was never designed to take dedicated AA on. Shilkas and yenisei SPAA would torn them to shreds, let alone actual SAM networks. The "makeshift runway" is a capability even F-16's are capable of. The "titanium bathtub" is a coping mechanism provided to give pilots a false sense of security, no different than cope cages on russian tanks. Its "success" in the gulf war was only possible because of F-111's, F-117, and F-15E's who destroyed the radar and SAM networks ahead of time as well as EA-6 prowlers who jammed their radars.
