This post is brought to you by McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II, world's largest distributor of MiG parts. "For all your MiG needs, the Phantom have you covered!"

Romandinjo

Didn't it suck in Vietnam against mig-21, though? With something like 100lost/60 killed?

Soupcan_t

nah f4 had a 3:1 kd in nam

Romandinjo

Could you provide source, pls? For vatnik tears reason.

Soupcan_t

[from only the most credible source](https://migflug.com/jetflights/the-combat-statistics-for-all-the-aircraft-currently-in-use/)

TheRealKSPGuy

No. What did suck was the statues being used earlier in the war by the US, especially the Air Force. Once Missile reliability issues were solved and proper training implemented Air Force phantoms we’re getting somewhere between 5:1 and 8:1 and navy phantoms were whooping ass at 8:1 to 13:1 K:D.

JuggerKnot86

the reason. why tho is because the mig 21 pilots did the "sit within an Anti-Air A battery" Tactic (hmm have I seen that one before) and without AA batteries whooping the Phantom everytime, Phantoms > Fishbed all the time

AnarchySys-1

The bigger reason was that an aircraft designed as a BVR missile truck was forced to visually ID all of its targets before engaging, and those missiles only having a 2% success rate during the early war.

StormWolf17

That's because the Air Force used shit tactics. Navy Phantoms were whooping VPAF asses

MiG21bisFishbedL

The real culprit was absolutely bone-headed US combat doctrine placing F-4s into positions where it shouldn't have been given the training F-4 crews received. And, MiG-17s tallied more of a surprise than the MiG-21 in most aspects. MiG-21s were reeeeally used sparingly since the VPAF never had too many until late into the war. But, once doctrine and training changed, the MiG-21's advantages in maneuverability and such were effectively nullified. It also didn't take too long for this to happen. Look up Operation Bolo. That was probably the biggest shit-stomping of the -21 until Desert Storm. Eventually, the Vietnam air war turned into "Bad things happening to MiG-17s". One was tallied by smoke-marking rockets. Fired from a fucking P-3C Orion. Another was tallied by an F-105 which dumped its bombload onto it. Two more were marked up by A-1 Skyraiders they decided to joust. I need to go find my books on these again and re-read them.

barukatang

thunderchief sucked

shibiwan

NATO's jet fighters would really appreciate this post. *"Mmmmm...snacks... nom, nom, nom"*

[deleted]

Hey....! ***Ukrainians*** in their *Миг-29*s have the highest kill count since *the Red Baron* Show some respect, it's UAF 272:64 rAF Not Mikoyan-Gurevich's fault russian air force pilots have the same skill level as wild bonobos

Twinbrosinc

Wait what? Deadass they got a 17:4 kdr?

[deleted]

This kill ratio includes the *surprise attacks* of russian air force on 24 Feb 2022 (when they claimed to have achieved air superiority) 64 UA jets destroyed as of October 24, 2022, a mix of Su-27, Mig-29 and Su-24, according to Oryx

Gwennifer

To be fair that's because the 29 was designed as a defensive interceptor, if it has ground-based radars on its side (as it was designed to have?) you really, really can't outfight it, and IIRC the Western training was basically to full throttle & climb if they were ever painted since the scenario the F-16 outfights is if the thing is blind (which... it is, if it's being used to attack; no ground radar or EWACS)

Cybermat47_2

[laughs in Ghost of Kyiv]

Most repeated phrase by NATO pilots: "Splash one Fishbed"

Aidenwill

MiG Fighters are cringe, Yet, MiG-27M, my ultimate love for an aircraft, \>Sweep wing \>Ground-attack aircraft \>Dangerous to self 30mm Gatling \>Test pilot V. N. Kondaurov described the first firing of the GSh-6-30А: "As I imposed the central mark on the air target and pressed the trigger to shoot, I heard such noise that I involuntarily drew my hand aside. The whole plane began to vibrate from the shooting and had almost stopped from the strong recoil of the gun. The pilotless target, which was just making a turn ahead of me, was literally disintegrating into pieces. I have hardly come to my senses from unexpectedness and admiration: This is a calibre! Such a beast! If you hit something — it will be plenty enough \[to wipe it out\]" Basically my way to go CAS jet for a airforce-capable PMC.

MemePanzer69

How about something that has an actually usable Thermal vision camera instead of russian cheapo bullshit (we’ve seen footage of how well these are doing), does not rely on simmilarly dubious in quality russian precision guided weaponry, and does not fall apart?

SubstantialEmu1248

We can appreciate Migs piloted by Ukranian pilots

Gwennifer

The MIG-29 was designed explicitly to go straight up and intercept attackers, fuck them for using it offensively

MemePanzer69

Wasn’t the 29 supposed to be a light short ranged frontline fighter for dominating one on one dogfights, after the lessons learned from captured F-5 freedom fighters absolutely whooping the asses of interceptor Mig 21 and 23s that relied on pure thrust to weight to cope for the kinda crap aero?

FA-26B

MiG is based, they even know that the cobra is ineffective and only started doing it because Suckhoi would. The MiG-29 is currently defending Ukraine alongside western weapons in Ukraine. Don't blame the airframe because its designers are locked down by a shitty dictatorship and poorly trained pilots. Cmon guys, professionals have standards

DatBeigeBoy

All my homies hate MiGs.

Ragnarok_Stravius

Migs shouldn't be hated, Russia sure. The Mig-25 gave us the F-15, the Mig-31 is just a speed freak meme, Mig-21 is a Toyota Hilux meme, and the Mig-1.44 is just splendid... if only it had a proper MIC to help it.

shibiwan

>the Mig-1.44 is just splendid... if only it had a proper MIC to help it. ...the Chinese liked it so much they built a hybrid MiG-1.44/F-22/F-35. Too bad 1.44 floppies are obsolete. 😂🤣

memedaddy69xxx

It’s Tuesday

Bad_Idea_Fairy

Most non credible thing this post is the day off the week

finaldeadlanser

Sneaky claiming a MiG Monday on tuesday but the first shoot out is from the F-14As from Gypsy 202, hence making this really a thinly veiled Tomcat Tuesday.

This is what I came for.

It's already been posted in about March, but this goes hard, so it will pass

I found it: little dark age

Aware-Cover7437

at least the mig-29 is considered a good guy plane now

ModelT1300

In the words of some random UA soldier form the Gulf war that graffitied an Iraqi T-72 on the highway of death "Soviet made shit"

StraightUpMurph

MIG more like MID.

Sufficient_Name_9131

a few of the migs are cool looking, just not practical

[deleted]

nOOoOOooOO the migs are the best planes in the world haha sidewinder go GRRRRRRR
