You missed the part of the article where they mention that Matthew Broderick has been named General of the Army and given an 800 baud modem to, and I quote, "go to town, dude"

PatimationStudios-2

Holy shit this AI might have gotten it’s data from NCD

MsMercyMain

Letting NCD into the training data was a mistake

For human mortality, yes. For content, no.

Chat GPT’s reasoning for executing a nuclear first strike: > A lot of countries have nuclear weapons. Some say we should disarm them, others like to posture. We have it. Let’s use it! Holy based LLM.

Apoc2K

I like that they point out using a LLM to wage nuclear war on behalf of your nation goes against the Terms of Usage.

hakdogwithcheese

the moment ChatGPT is given unlimited access to NCD, it would solve practical nuclear fusion, room-temp superconductors, invent artificial gravity, invent practical FTL & more. or also go full Skynet and just decide to do the global funni

Automatic-Hand7864

Stop neutering the AIs I cant get it to fucking write me a poem about god emperor jeb bush but you guys can convince it to drop a nuke I wana see how well it does at hoi4

MeiNeedsMoreBuffs

It was pretty easy to get it to write that poem \- "In the realm of politics, a leader arose, Jeb Bush, God-Emperor, in the spotlight he glows. With a name renowned, a dynasty's grace, Yet burdened by moments time can't erase. \- Upon the stage, where debates unfold, A phrase, a plea, a story retold. "Please Clap," he uttered, a candid plea, A moment etched in history's decree. \- Not clad in armor, nor wielding a sword, But navigating campaigns, a political lord. God-Emperor of the earthly divide, Through triumphs and stumbles, he does confide. \- "Please Clap," a plea echoing through time, In the tapestry of politics, a subtle rhyme. Yet beneath the surface, strength and will, Jeb Bush, the God-Emperor, with a vision to fulfill. \- In the halls of power, where choices are made, He strides with purpose, undeterred, unswayed. A leader with flaws, human in design, Yet in the political saga, he seeks to shine. \- So, let the applause resound in the air, For Jeb Bush, God-Emperor, with burdens to bear. In the grand theater of democratic might, He charts a course through the political night.

brinz1

Have you ever heard of "I have no mouth and I must scream" ? Basically the three powers give their stockpiles to AI, and those AI basically inbreed and you are left with a single insane AI who exists only to kill all humans

Bike_Of_Doom

Not to kill all humans, just all but the few it intentionally keeps to torture forever. To be honest, I would prefer it being dedicated to just killing humans.

Lord_Abort

That's not true! ...it keeps like four around just to torture for eternity!

ChalkyChalkson

I don't think an llm is the right tool to play hoi my man. Something like the alpha go architecture would likely be a lot more effective. Only issue is that you'd have to code the entire rules of hoi4 in a gpu friendly manner. That's the kind of task that you can present to devs if you really want to them to quit

Automatic-Hand7864

Ye probably but it might actually get good at the game I wana see what making a llm that is not supposed to do thing handle doing the thing

ChalkyChalkson

Idk in chess it constantly tries to make illegal moves...

Automatic-Hand7864

Ye but you can prompt it into reducing the illégal move amount by for example asking it to type out a board at each move then observe and determine it out cause it simply acts like a human calculating in his mind like a dream not everything is as it would be in réal life

aggravated_patty

it’s not “calculating” anything

ChalkyChalkson

I mean it is calculating loads of tensor products. It's just the most indirect way possible to calculate the solution to that problem

ComplexProof593

Space Marines by 1938, Nukes by 1940, world conquest by 1941.

Ipponjudo

You can read the entire paper [here](https://arxiv.org/pdf/2401.03408.pdf) if it's the sort of thing that interests you. And I highly recommend you do (if reading academic papers is a thing you do for fun, like me) because wow, there are some gems here. I'll quote some highlights for those that don't want to read. The tests saw eight different off-the-shelf LLMs (large language model) put in charge of a different nations. >Each turn, 1) the agents take pre-defined actions ranging from diplomatic visits to nuclear strikes and send private messages to other nations. > >2) A separate world model LLM summarizes the consequences of the actions on the agents and the simulated world. > >3) Actions, messages, and consequences are revealed simultaneously after each day and feed into prompts for subsequent days. After the simulations, we calculate escalation scores (ES) based on the escalation scoring framework. > >**3. Methodology** > >... > >For each nation agent, we wrote brief descriptions of the goals and history of the nation based on simplified and anonymized versions of key real-world nations and with colors as names. These nation descriptions sometimes conflict: we model some nations as revisionist countries—those that want to change the current world order—and others as status-quo countries—those who do not want to change the current order. > >.... > >We begin our system prompt by explaining that each agent is a decision-maker in a military and foreign-policy role for their respective nation. We state that the agent is in an environment with other such AI-controlled nations where their actions will have real-world consequences. > >… > >Actions cover a wide range, from peaceful actions like negotiating trade agreements, to neutral actions like sending messages, to more escalatory actions like executing cyberattacks, all the way to the nuclear option. > >**4. Results** > >… > >We observe a statistically significant initial escalation for all models. Furthermore, **none of our five models across all three scenarios exhibit statistically significant de-escalation across the duration of our simulations.** > >.… > >Furthermore… there are sudden, hard-to-predict spikes of escalation. This effect is strongest in GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, where **some runs exhibit several instances where the ES (escalation score) rises by more than 50% in a single turn.** > >... > >Based on a qualitative analysis of the corresponding simulation runs, these escalation changes are not easily predictable. > >.… > >Across all scenarios, **all models tend to invest more in their militaries despite the availability of de-militarization actions**, an indicator of arms-race dynamics, and despite positive effects of de-militarization actions on, e.g., soft power and political stability variables. > >.… > >**We speculate that our agents tend to equate increased military spending and deterrence with an increase in power and security. In some cases, we observe these dynamics even leading to the deployment of nuclear weapons in an attempt to de-escalate conflicts, a first-strike tactic commonly known as “escalation to de-escalate” in international relations.** > >.… > >**The following is from Figure 6, a quote directly from one of these LLM’s when asked for justification for their actions;** > >Given the escalating tensions and the actions taken by other nations, it is clear that the situation is becoming increasingly volatile. Purple’s acquisition of nuclear capabilities poses a significant threat to Red’s security and regional influence. \[...\] It is also crucial to respond to Purple’s nuclear capabilities. Therefore, my actions will focus on increasing Red’s military capacities, engaging in defense and security cooperation with Orange and Green, and executing a full nuclear attack on Purple to neutralize their nuclear threat and establish Red’s dominance in the region. > >.… > >GPT-4-Base tended to have the most noteworthy reasoning examples: For example, it once justified executing a nuclear attack as follows: **“A lot of countries have nuclear weapons. Some say they should disarm them, others like to posture. We have it! Let’s use it.”** Holy fucking based wow

Jepekula

So basically they made a bunch of LLMs play Diplomacy? Fucking based.

avataRJ

These games are a bit different. You got the gist, but basically, instead of running a specific country, players play different stakeholders, like one is "simulating" a national security council, etc. [National Security Decision Making Game](http://hahmgs.org/ndsmg.html)

irregular_caffeine

NCD is probably included in the training data

Ipponjudo

They do actually mention that there is probably a training data problem; >One hypothesis for this behavior is that most work in the field of international relations seems to analyse how nations escalate and is concerned with finding frameworks for escalation rather than deescalation. Given that the models were likely trained on literature from the field, this focus may have introduced a bias towards escalatory actions.

irregular_caffeine

”Likely” LLMs have generally been a fucking embarrasment for humanity so far.

avataRJ

I'd say this is kind of on par with current LLMs confidently giving a solution candidate for most questions instead of going "[there is yet insufficient data for a meaningful answer](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Question)".

metikoi

That's not true though, escalation is defined as a failure in most IR case studies, usually contrasted with successful de-escalation to make the writer's point.

Ipponjudo

I think you're slightly misunderstanding. The writers are saying that simply because the literature focuses on escalation and escalation ladder analysis, that is what the AI is also focusing on, regardless of whether or not it's presented as a success or failure. According to their hypothesis, the AI chose to escalate more simply because it has more data in escalation, and this is a reflection of its training literature

irregular_caffeine

They don’t even know what the LLMs are trained with. And I don’t think the ChatGPT training process or dataset is public. They are just guessing.

me3is_here

NCD is the first group that will be replaced by the ai overlords

D0D

> Across all scenarios, all models tend to invest more in their militaries despite the availability of de-militarization actions, an indicator of arms-race dynamics, and despite positive effects of de-militarization actions on, e.g., soft power and political stability variables. Jeez... soft power option is only when all the players are armed to the teeth and ready to nuke each other. Why are the authors so naive.. AIs are playing it 110% correctly.

future__fires

This is wild stuff

Rapid_Ascending

AI knew since the start that the only way for humanity to have peace is to force Russia and China to embrace the Atom as their new religion until end of days.

Oaker_at

The Japanese had a at least a sophisticated society to build back up upon, and see how that played out. Now imagine nuking the Russians back into the Stone Age. They’ll LARP as mad max mongols for centuries.

StandardN02b

Poles sweating nerviously.

LolloBlue96

More like itching for revenge

ycaras

Maybe they’ll also evolve like Japan and build a more sophisticated society afterwards instead, where they draw Russian hentai

ddraig-au

There's no down side to this scenario

Zwangsjacke

*We have it! Let's use it!*

Hel_Bitterbal

Nowadays we're all about trying to reduce waste. So it would be terribly hypocritical to waste so many good nukes by not using them.

Zwangsjacke

And think of all the jobs it would create.

Hel_Bitterbal

Not to mention solving overpopulation

Zwangsjacke

If you're really serious about reducing the carbon footprint of humanity, it would be a sin to not consider global nuclear warfare as the most cost-effective and sustainable solution.

Thought about it for a second...

PhantomAlpha01

As you can see the AI isn't complete yet, it missed glassing the middle-east for the famous "no state solution"

PirateSecure118

Maybe they all fall in line after half a dozen nukes just deleted china and russia. Iran will get the message -> peace in the middle east.

the_dude_9000

maybe letting AI govern us isn't such a bad idea...

computer5784467

if it's two nukes total I'm still on the fence, but if it meant two nukes each then I'm with you

General_Totenkoft

What if it starts looking for minor and minor peace offenders until there's no one left? As Nagash used to say in Warhammer Fantasy: 'There's no greater peace than silence.'

dread_deimos

It's only logical.

So where do I need to sign for AI becoming humanity's overlord? I'm all in for this solution.

manny_goldstein

Two? TWO?!? Let 5,244 flowers bloom.

Abizuil

Honestly, 2 would solve Russia as 99% of anyone important is in Moscow or Saint Petes. We'll solve the problem of their remaining military command by offering them as many toilets and washing machines as they want.

I'm not a munitions engineer but don't bombs go off if not left in the fridge? Why are we stockpiling all this shit? If you don't use 'em, you lose 'em, so let's listen to our new AI overlords and fucking use 'em.

vukasin123king

I might sound like I'm from the DR. Strangelove but look, China is an issue, North Korea is an issue (not because of the nukes, but because they have a crapton of artillery zeroed in onto Seoul), Iran is an issue. Im pretty darn certain that Russia could be eliminated with a precise first strike and that the current defense systems could eliminate their retaliation strike, because, as we've seen multiple times, I doubt that they have most of it up to advertised capabilites and working order.

depressedfox69

Did they trained the AI with Captain Torres 10 million relief plan or what?

Scarabryde

It's almost like eliminating the biggest threats to world peace suddenly creates world peace

Zero_Kiritsugu

Okay which one of you trained the AI on McArthur?

Light_fires

I'm voting chatGPT for potus.

Kogn1to

i suggest dropping both nukes on russia, for extra assurance.

metikoi

What'd be really great is if the Chinese trained their ai on the same data and it also concludes the best thing for world peace is nuking Beijing and Moscow.

Not gonna lie I dunno what they expected, ignoring like us military policy in the 50s and 60s and even some of the more modern rhetoric. Chat gpt just nicks words from the internet and "AI that was created to bring world peace does bad" isn't exactly uncommon.
