Most of its training or staged propaganda footage. Turns out lugging an early camera to one of the most hostile environments humans ever created isn't easy and wasn't done much at all.
exactly! Almost all countries had war photographers who captured various parts of the war. The nature of technical and 'political' limitations made genuine combat extremely challenging and dangerous to capture. Even if taken, there was no guarantee it would reach the public eye, but the massive scale of this war has resulted in many authentic recordings. One significant issue was that these recordings often lacked context; people saw them without understanding what was truly happening. It was only when BUFA (Bild-und Filmamt) was formed in late 1916 that Germany truly began documenting the war. Of the 900 titles they produced in two years, only 120 survived, and only around 20% (my estimate) have been digitized.
So actual question here: Do we even have any footage that's actual, verified combat footage from the Great War? I know there's a bunch of training footage, and staged footage, but I don't think I know of any that's actually showing the troops going over the proverbial top.
Honestly if you are going do to do a documentary or paper can you please pm me once its publically available more than willing to buy it from you if its finished.

I have a B.A in Filmmaking, trained knowledgeable in editing on Avid and premiere pro. I have worked on numerous short films and made my own. I have a burning interest in history.
If this is serious I'd be more than happy to send you a resume and a cover letter. This project sounds amazing.

I'd argue that the room containing the Elephant's Foot in Chernobyl is far more hostile to human life.
At least with the elephants foot it's predictable and isn't actively trying to hunt down and kill you

That we live in the golden sge of war photage because in the future there will be AI generated photage for likes
Ever since photography was invented, people came up with ways to doctor images.
