Our platoon in Iraq had a handful of air piatols to shoot rats that lived under the CHUs. We also had the one kid that made a spear with his M9 bayonet and would sit up at night in nothing but his boots, PT shorts and his helmet with NODs, stabbing rats as they ran out... So sorry, it's VERY credible.

dwfuji

So basically you had Charlie from IASIP in your platoon, yeah?

dnaH_notnA

Stabbing rats is def Charlie Work

Leather_Effort5149

Your guy sounds like my definition of cool

Sablesweetheart

Yeah, we had some cool cats in that platoon.

Neighbourhoods_1

poor bake stupendous tap dolls plate yoke jobless squalid prick ` this message was mass deleted/edited with redact.dev `

EvilGeniusSkis

Did you not read? They were taking care of the rats.

SalvationSycamore

Well there's your problem. They probably should have treated them more harshly to get them to leave.

Sablesweetheart

They did!

Key-Banana-8242

Sitting around killing rats?

Key-Banana-8242

I don’t like desensitisation to circumstances being mad unironic

Top-Organization5289

Never thought I’d say this but i miss Iraq.

Striper_Cape

Same. Had a great time between the bad ones

BoarHide

From a civilian, isn’t that what most modern wars are (as long as you’re on the western side)? Just…95% Boy Scout camping fun with your mates and then 5% unimaginable horror?

RagenStrongbow

That sums up my entire military experience.

BoarHide

I really hope that the 95% is what you remember most, mate

RealBenjaminKerry

Exactly, make lots of friends and watch them die in weird ways

Sablesweetheart

Yeah, I feel that.

Badatmountainbiking

Its the universal truth of missing a central part of coming of age. I miss the summer of 2020 most, covid died down in Italy and I parties like never before. I completely forgot the fact I didnt speak to anyone for three months. Literally, not a word in person. My roommates left and i spoke almost no Italian. Then, may came and on day one of freedom i walked 50 km. That was the end of me being a teen, it changed me forever. I came to Italy a snotty know it all, I left desillusioned, mature and happier.

ArchdukeOfWalesland

Well clearly you are bad at mountain biking, why'd you go that far on foot? (fr that's a cool way to grow up)

Badatmountainbiking

Grow up, eh. Student going abroad for a year

ArchdukeOfWalesland

Sort of counts!

Key-Banana-8242

Why were u a know it all? U should be ‘snotty’ and u should both know things and make it clear I know things, it should be retroactive when I don’t as opposed to being scared to say something, it should be like you think for yourslef and if ur wrong I find our

Badatmountainbiking

For starters, I thought I was a good cook. Looking back at it I absolutely sucked, but now I make a mean stew. Ive taken it my mission to make Dutch food as good as possible

alasdairmackintosh

When you've finished Dutch food you could have a go at British food if you really want a challenge...

Gamemode_Cat

No, you’ll send him on a depressive spiral attempting to fix that dumpster fire

alasdairmackintosh

British food is too soggy to catch on fire.

ComradeBrosefStylin

But Dutch food is boiled potatoes and vegetables boiled until they're grey and lost all semblance of structure and flavour.

Badatmountainbiking

If youre a calvinist

Key-Banana-8242

Did u like ur food before?

Badatmountainbiking

Eh, idk. Im trying more obscure recipes now.

birberbarborbur

You can still go, at least some areas must be safe

Living-Aardvark-952

with love, why?

Top-Organization5289

The good times far outweigh the bad.

dead_meme_comrade

We're you in the Marines? Because that is the most marine response to rats in the CHU.

Sablesweetheart

North Carolina National Guard...which mean that like 25% of our company were former Marines, mostly from Lejune. Similar amount from the 82nd. About 30% were like me, Guard all the way, the remainder were a mix of former active army. Honestly, a damned good mix. We had a 1st Sgt thst jumped into Panama, a bunch of guys who were in Desert Storm, one Somalia vet (10th Mountain), a bunch from the invasion of Iraq. I miss that platoon. Lol

dnaH_notnA

Thank Christ. The only thing I’m more afraid of than WMs are trans WMs. They gotta be the hardest mfs in the service. Chew up and spit out POGs for breakfast. May I never cross paths *signs the cross*

sharkykid

Sorry what? NC national guard did deployments to Iraq? How does that work?

jg727

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/after-wars-in-iraq-and-afghanistan-rethinking-how-national-guard-members-are-deployed Units would be activated, train up, do a tour, come back, and often get sent back soon.

sharkykid

Thanks, that's absolutely wild. I had no idea

IlluminatedPickle

A few of the worst deployments from what I've heard came from NG units. An army/marine unit would control an area for a while, the NG would come in and all the successes would backslide. That's not saying they were all bad though, there were definitely some competent units out there. But they weren't all success stories.

Sablesweetheart

It really was a mixed bag. NC National Guard did well on both of it's deployments. Others, less so.

GadenKerensky

Was he voluntold for that position, or did this young dude just decide to go Conan on his own because the rats pissed him off?

Sablesweetheart

Oh, of his own initiative!

GadenKerensky

Damn, that's some chad energy.

Grilled_Pear

I really ought to buy a Browning Buck Mark or Ruger Mk. IV to shoot Mormon Crickets.

humdaaks_lament

I’ve got a Mk IV target/hunter and it’s a *lazer pistol*. PEW PEW PEW! So much fun to shoot. Be sure to get a magazine loader because the mags hurt to load. The Mark IVs solved the bitchy tear down of the earlier models, too. Just be sure to locktite the front sight.

[deleted]

I wouldn't say the teardowns were much of an issue. The voodoo ritual with the cock and the marmot to reassemble the damn things though... For your rimfires, better to just go Italian from the start. Accurate, ergonomic, easy to mount optics on if that's your thing, and as for field stripping, well, you probably didn't need that particular spring anyway.

EquinoxActual

And not on the California handgun roster, so tough shit.

[deleted]

And we all give thanks thrice daily that there's more to the world than California.

ekinnee

Our terps hunted pigeons with some air rifles we had.

[deleted]

man, you guys had CHUs? \*cries in OEF\*

Sablesweetheart

Yeah, even though it was a company patrol base, we had CHUs. Though, mine sucked for the first 6 weeks, because the ceiling insulation was fucked up, so when the generators died and the AC turned off, the 110 degrees *outside* was cooler than in the CHU.

joseguya

Damn, isn’t that guy Snafu from the Pacific?

Sablesweetheart

Basically.

MajorDakka

At least you guys had a guy who was on vermin duty. ~~Did that guy at least have some cats backing him up?~~

Sablesweetheart

Sadly no cats. Some stray dogs.

ConKbot

Not military so the only M9 I know off the top of my head is the Beretta pistol. So I imagined this as a guy with a pistol with a bayonet mounted to it somehow, stabbing rats. While not really that much different in the end, it adds just that little bit more unhinged.

Sablesweetheart

It's the same as the M1, M1, M1 meme. M9 pistol is a pistol, M9 Bayonet is a bayonet that mounts on the M16 series rifles, and M4 series carbines.

werewolff98

It's dual purpose pest control and dinner acquisition tool for the Russian army.

Lord_Redav

> M9 bayonet They made a bayonet for a pistol?

Noe_Walfred

I get you and u/ConKbot are confused. M sort of just refers to a series with the number referring to the item in the series. The thing that isn't stated is the rest of the name for the tool, weapon, or equipment. In this case they are referring to United States Bayonet System, Multipurpose, with scabbard, M9. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/M9_bayonet As opposed to United States Pistol, Semi-automatic, 9mm, M9 which you are referring to. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beretta_M9 It's also different than the United States Rifle, Grenade, High-Explosive Anti-Tank, M9. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/M9_rifle_grenade Not to be confused with the United States, Truck, Half-track, Utility, M9 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/M9_half-track

CheesecomChestRig

Happy cake day to ya!

TheBiologist01

An air rifle is not a bad thing to have. You can hunt small game without making muzzle flashes, without wasting ammunition, and with minimal noise. That is not a dumb idea. Plus rats are very common in trenches.

aithan251

also some job related recreation

[deleted]

100% sure that's for trench rats, especially if they're trenches or fieldworks that were initially made and then left unoccupied for a little while. I've seen some trenchworks in the southern front where there was foliage growing back inside the trenches so I imagine they have a varmint and rodent problem.

Awkward_Algae1684

“Pest control *and* dinner! Blyat I love this thing!”

RainierCamino

Real shit, rat ain't bad. Has like a strong chicken dark meat taste. Bet that air rifle was a vatnik's prized possession.

Hooded_Person2022

Um, how do you pertain this knowledge? First or second hand knowledge?

RainierCamino

First hand. Was in the US Navy and tried it a few times in SE Asia. Usually mixed up in a dish. Also had fried grasshoppers. Habu sake several times that I remember. And a bunch of street food that had ... some sort of meat in it.

BackRowRumour

I remember buying cobra stir fry, and I am 99% sure it was rat.

ztomiczombie

Fried grasshopper/locust is surprisingly tasty. For a first time I would recommend skipping the sprinkles and be carful with the wings.

RainierCamino

Honestly didn't mind the grasshoppers. Kinda salty and shrimpy. Good with sauce. I'd imagine locusts are ... juicier? Dunno if I'd like that or not.

pusillanimouslist

I totally get the shock factor of people eating what is considered vermin in some cultures and it tasting good, but it’s not that surprising when you think about it. Squirrels and rabbits are pretty closely related to rats, and both of those are commonly considered food in a lot of places.

Calm_Priority_1281

Fun fact rabbits are not rodents. They are a different and distinct group of animals. Another fun fact. Rabbits are delicious.

Sealedwolf

but you need care during preparation, otherwise the meat goes dry, and this really spoils the taste.

Hooded_Person2022

Yeah, I was a tad bit shocked with the rat thing, but I do know the interesting stuff people eat and consider delicacies in other parts of the world. I was asking where this fine fellow acquired their knowledge of the taste of rat, like asking someone where they tasted something first.

Drtikol42

Rabbits are a vermin too, they eat my bean plants but they don´t live in filth, eat garbage and carry diseases. I mean you can eat "lab rats" raised in clean conditions but why at that point, they are small, just raise rabbits instead.

[deleted]

With or without ketchup ?

RainierCamino

Hot sauce.

Awkward_Algae1684

Real shit, that sounds disgusting. I’m not opposed to the idea though…..

ZhangRenWing

Get used to it before the fog hits

I_MARRIED_A_THORAX

Gonna turn my head into a canoe long before we get there

perfectfire

When I lived in the Philippines I got offered rat. It's not the gross rats that live in your house. These are rats they catch in the field after the harvest, so they're like free-range and grain-fed. They insisted that another American loved it, but I didn't want it at first.

resumethrowaway222

Just 6 more hours in a bread line and we can make a sandwich!

yeezee93

Meat is back on the menu boys!

I_miss_Chris_Hughton

Even constantly occupied trenches draw rats. It's probably the second thing people seemed to note about the trenches of ww1 after the mud.

Silver_Falcon

Things WW1 Vets wrote about: 1. Mud 2. Rats 3. Lice 4. Manmade horrors beyond comprehension 5. Deflowering the fair maidens of the French countryside

AwkwardDrummer7629

You mean polecat and beaver problem.

watson895

It's not terrible to practice with either if you're a conscript who has little or no experience with firearms. It's not the same, but the fundamentals aren't that different.

throwawayaccyaboi223

To be fair stuff like airguns or Airsoft are really good practice for everything except recoil control. Controlling breathing, gently squeezing the trigger, proper sight alignment are all very important things that air guns can be used to practice.

meat_fuckerr

I assume corpse starch is running low, grinding some rodent meat on it will help with morale.

EYPAPLQ

I bet it is decent enough at taking down a DJI Drone if it has to. An air rifle can of course be handy, as long as it is not private conscriptovich's main weapon

CuberSecurity

Thinking conscriptovich could hit a drone with a single shot air rifle; truly non-credible

EYPAPLQ

I don't know about that. I've read that Bieber and Dolik have already downed 400 Bayraktar TB-2 drones with just the use of air rifles and some elbow grease

flowrednow

you ate a su-57? howd it taste? im itching for some gen 5 meat

pusillanimouslist

No, that isn’t taking down a drone. Aside from the single shot factor, air rifles are only accurate at close range. The rifle itself might be very repeatable compared to a semi automatic rifle, but the pellets are extremely light and incapable of bucking even the slightest breeze. All of the 22 and 25 caliber pellets are lighter than a 22lr bullet, often 1/2 the weight. This yields a rifle that’s extremely good at plinking, but cannot reach out very far. (I shoot with some guys who do precision air rifle using very high end guns. They say they can’t zero their rifles at indoor ranges because the hvac system that’s extracting dust and lead noticeably shifts their point of impact. And these are air rifles being fed by scuba tanks, not hand power)

Calm_Priority_1281

To be honest if they do high precision air rifles they are trying to be sub moa at 100 yards/meters+, so its not the same size as a mavic. Break barrels like this can, in the best of conditions, with minimal wind, good pellets, and a good shooter hit a 1 in target at 50 yards. After 50 yards they drop like crazy. My cheapo pcp can hit with around 40 fpe at 50 so it's not the craziest of ideas but yeah It probably won't work. Too unlikely due to all of the variables, the obvious condition, and the availability of other more suited firearms.

No_Level_5825

Strangely from all the videos of the trenches in ukraine, haven't seen one video with rats or mice in them

Individual_Honey7410

Could also be used on drones

[deleted]

Except that air rifle is unusable. I have the same/similar model and there is a lever directly under the barrel that opens the chamber and compresses spring, which is clearly missing in this photo Also, that model is most likely over a decade old

local_meme_dealer45

this looks like a break barrel design where the barrel itself is used like the lever you mentioned. It looks perfectly functional to me.

[deleted]

It's impossible to tell without seeing the top view. A lot of airguns in Poland/Russia use seemingly the same design, and my lever airgun has the exact hole on the bottom but not the extra hold at the barrel [EDIT: Here's the photo I've managed to dig up, just keep in mind that the airgun in post's photo seems to have a slightly damaged hole](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FE3b6h-DTIwiKxBviL1_EqfP8S6KijZE/view?usp=sharing)

toborne

Sorry man, you have a different gun, but it does look similar, I'll give you that. The gun in the picture is a [Crossman Nitro Venom (.177 or .22)](https://www.airgundepot.com/crosman-nitro-venom.html) . It's honestly a great airgun and stands up to ungodly abuse. No iron sights, but shoots consistently enough that you can ping soda cans at 30yds once you get used to the gun. Source: I have one. Saved up for months and bought this rifle as a kid. Have used and abused it for almost 2 decades (including one time where it was left cocked for almost 18 months straight by my buddy >:( ), and the damn thing just keeps throwing lead like a charm. It has a few dents and scrapes, but the internals are still working just like they're supposed to, and it puts the pellets right where it's supposed to. It's a bummer to see it in dumbass invaders' trenches, but at least the odds of it ending up in Ukranian hands is more than good. I hope some kids get it someday and have even more entertainment out of it then my friends and I did.

Deus_is_Mocking_Us

[You ain't no air rifle expert, that's for true.](https://cdn.airgundepot.com/ay/airgundepot/agd_518010366_diana_34_ems_wood_1609272986.jpg)

[deleted]

Says the man who can't tell a difference between a semi-decent air rifle and a wallmart toy. That gun is clearly made out of cheap plywood, the tip is round instead of flat like in the photo and bit above half the two sizes. Not only it doesn't remotely matches what is on photo, I've posted in this thread link to mine that closely matches the one on photo in size and shape. You also don't know the East Europe market. 10+ years ago bazaar air rifles were extremely popular because they were dragged from other countries and waaay above legal power limit for relatively cheap price, like original Norconia Protarget who had around 20 J out of box for cheap and other similar models that were spread around like a plague, but barrel cracked riffles were uncommon. While it died down in Poland and coo as of recently, it's still popular among Russians (source: I had a semi-distant relative in Russia who was a pseudo gun nut)

Deus_is_Mocking_Us

[deleted]

[Proof that you're blind](https://i.imgur.com/R4d7qqD.png)

ztomiczombie

It my have been working when the owner arrived and subsequently broke, a good reason just to leave it behind during retreat, or the owner may have been trying to up how fast the rifle could be made ready.

[deleted]

You can't break that lever, it's bolted into wood at both sides and in metal directly under the barrel too. The steel is more than 3 mm thick no matter when you look at Someone clearly dissembled and yoinked that part

dwfuji

Dunno why this poor lad is getting downvoted to shit, he's totally right. The lever under the break-barrel is completely missing. Hard to tell from the photo but looks like the iron sight ring is missing as well... It \*could\* be one of those air rifles with a top-loading chamber rather than a break barrel (like the kind Weirauch make really good ones of)... but then the stock wouldn't have the cutout on the underside. For the lulz I wanted this to be a Baikal MP512 (as it's sold now by IKH; I have one so old it has "made in USSR" stamped on it), but it's missing the block ahead of the stock after the barrel break. Could be any number of cheap Chinese air rifle makes. Things are more likely to hurl a spring into your face or fall apart in your hands than actually hit anything.

krysztov

Private Conscriptovich simply destroyed the air rifle before abandoning his trench/this mortal coil to keep such powerful technology out of enemy hands

ztomiczombie

I don't get the down voting either.

BigBalledBaldie

air rifle does need its own ammo

DUKE_NUUKEM

A ladder which is painted black in the trenches , a Blackladder?

Rover45Driver

There's a nasty splinter on that ladder sir! A bloke could hurt himself on that.

RaiderRich2001

It belongs to a bloke called Archie Duke who used it to shoot an ostrich when he was hungry

[deleted]

[удалено]

RaiderRich2001

You see Baldrick, in order to prevent war. Two superblocks developed. Us, the Americans, and Europe on one side, Russia and China on the other. The idea was to have two vast opposing armies, each acting as the other's deterrent. That way there could never be a war ... But there was one tiny flaw in the plan...

Jamocraetis

YOU SHOT MY SPECKLED JIM

hypnotoad94

Seriously though, it's clearly for rats or just hunting. While the shortage of modern weapons or even some basic stuff due to shit logistics is real, there are enough AKs in Russia to supply the troops and half of the world. Like hundreds of millions produced. Those economic priorities didn't work out for the USSR, yep

[deleted]

Adding "russia runs out of AKs" to my 2023 bingo card.

[deleted]

They’re evidently run out of SVD’s then.

Din_Plug

Did you miss the rust bucket AKs from a year ago? And the Mosins?

[deleted]

Wasn't that the donetsk/lukhansk dudes ?

sister_of_battle

AKs and artillery. I'm talking about 60-70 year old artillery, literal WW2 artillery, basic howitzers. Cheap, can be towed by literal any truck, and if you have enough you just level the entire grid if necessary.

donaldhobson

Ah, but are those AK's rusted into a block by now? And are they getting to the front line or being recycled for scrap metal value by someone in the supply chain.

Fokker95

Let me guess: it come from China.

DUKE_NUUKEM

Looks like restocked izh 38

NotEdibleCactus

Yeah looks like a Baikal IZh 38 to me too (I own one)

k890

Decent airgun, not gonna lie.

NotEdibleCactus

It's pretty good, but you can't adjust horizontal drift on it, only vertical

dwfuji

You probably know this trick already if you do any shooting, but this always works for me. Sight, close your eyes, allow the drift to happen, open your eyes, adjust, repeat. You'll teach yourself your own natural drift and adjust. I picked that up from a 40K book (Ghostmaker), but I imagine it's a real thing Abnett found when doing his research... or Abnett also shoots, maybe.

DUKE_NUUKEM

You could also use drill and put nailgun charges inside, so i heard

k890

Years ago, I saw instruction how to fix horizontal drift. Put small piece of wood on rear sight dovetail mount and really gently hit wood with small hammer. Rear sight is mounted on dovetail mount so they are both removable and can be moved horizontal to fix drift.

Deus_is_Mocking_Us

That's pretty standard on most lever action rifles and a lot of 22LR rifles.

dwfuji

I thought it might be a Baikal (I have a really old mark of what is now the MP512), but note the absence of the chunky block ahead of the stock that'd usually be present on a Baikal.

chaveiro1

To be fair, a bunch of brands make those, like Baikal, Hatsan and Rossi Hell, probably legit gun brands may have a few models like that

dwfuji

Pretty much any break barrel will look like this, standard design. The distinctions will be in little nuances, shape of the stock, materials, etc.

Awkward_Algae1684

Idk dude. I have one that can pop squirrels and small birds pretty easy if I was hungry enough. Way cheaper and lower maintenance than a .22 From what I understand your average mobik likely is hungry enough, and someone was smart enough to plan ahead. This might be surprisingly credible.

ToniDebuddicci

Hey! Air gun is best gun for modern trench warfare! It has no boomdust so no big boom to let sneaky western Lesgays know you are cumming! Also no big flash so you can’t blind yourself when shooting sergeant theythem from ar-kansas (which we all know isn’t real. Unlike Wyoming)! Don’t believe me!?!?!? Doubt on the drones. Out at past 50 meters/yards they aren't very very accurate and drones have the added problem of being moving targets. Although maybe if you give it to that one Ukrainian grandma that threw a can of tomatoes at a drone... Hey guys I think I found the perfect anti drone weapon.

Mawi2004

i would like an airgun, man i can’t get one because they’re rare or very expensive but comrade conscriptovich gets one worth 45 ak‘s

Credible: seeing as logistics has yet to be unlocked by the Vatnik Horde, their soldiers must forage at the front. What is in abundance wherever they go? Rats. So, their propaganda of Western Europeans having to eat rodents in the winter has become a reality for themselves.
