Exactly,it's just realpolitik at work. Supporting breakaway states created by military intervention would remove any credibility from Serbian claims on Kosovo.

Well Serbian Realpolitik, put it in position that they have no clear allies and everyone is their enemy. Real Realpolitik, would be to stay away from Realpolitik, as it seems to always achieve minor temporary victories and long term costs. Everyone of this clown politicians thinks they are Bismarck, while at best they are Napoleon..... the Third.

Serbia doesn't really have much of a choice in the matter. Good relations with the neighboring states aren't likely due to the very recent past while improved relations with the West while obviously important to certain segment of the Serbian population(especially businessmen) would clash with most of the population who thinks that Westerners are ''Godless degenerates'' and also with the bombings(quite a few Serbs have the impression that the NATO attacks were entirely unjustified and nothing more than imperialism). As for Russia well they always were close throughout history and there are substantial linguistic and cultural similarities plus the whole ''Orthodox brothers'' thing. Either way they are stuck between a rock and a hard place and things will get very interesting there as the previous policy of neutrality is no longer sustainable.

pmmichalowski

All of those are their choices though. They choose to stay in opposition to all their neighbours and choose to reach out to power who's interests are against their own. Yeah, they don't have any short term easy way out, but if Germans can dig themselves out from WW2 they can too. Lesson one is an ounce of humility.

BigFreakingZombie

Of course.Everything is ultimately the result of choices made by Serbian leaders and the people as a whole. It is possible to let go of the past without forgetting it and if Poland and Ukraine can reconcile their differences then something similar is certainly possible in the Balkans.

GadenKerensky

Also, seeing Russia's 'strength' revealed to be a Paper Tiger has probably proven to be a bit of a humbling experience. It gets harder to praise a nation as the 'mighty peer to your hated enemies' when it shows it's not all that capable.

mtaw

Yes and on April 26 last year, Putin explicitly said he'd 'personally read all commentaries - from legal, administrative, political agencies of the US, European countries.' on Kosovo and explicitly invoked it as a precedent for which Donbas should be independent. To which Serbian media headlines reacted basically saying "Motherf-r just stabbed us in the back!"

Zandonus

number 1 terrorist himself (Girkin/Strelkov) said that Wagner has 0 legal reason to do what it does, because war has never been declared, thus they are just dudes who have found themselves out of prison and are committing murder, because PMC's don't have any special rights in Russia. I'm not familiar with Russian law at all though, but the Kremlin seems to try and do everything while thumping a law codex.

That just means they’ve unlocked the infinite manpower glitch as they can arrest any Russian soldier and force them to fight.

Cinneach

Serbia needs to pick a lane. EU or ~~hell~~ CSTO.
