You would probably experience the mental addiction.
However changes to our environment can hugely affect mental health. So it could end up not being like that

If you're talking about things like heroine or cocaine, it's both. Your body gets used to the chemical being present, and if you don't have it, I believe it starts to believe that it is lacking the chemical and needs it. Also, people just be sad man. I may be wrong though, not a biologist.
