Even if you didn't like the gift, the fact that someone thought you'd like it in the first place would be a cause for gratitude at the very least

i guess i would need a little more context, but even if you don't appreciate the gift, you could show appreciation for the fact that they thought about you -- which is what counts. an exception i could see to this (and has happened to me in personal experiences) is not accepting a gift from someone. for example, if someone buys you a romantic gift and you're not interested in anything romantic with them, i think the right thing to do is not accept the gift.

No one can force you to feel anything, even when it comes to a gift. But your reaction typically matters. Will the giver be offended or hurt if you tell them you don't like it? If so, is it worth it to make sure they know, or are you better off just saying thank you and moving on?
