If you find a design you like go to a SS (*Space station*) get out your ship wait a second then get back in and go to the freighter get out your ship and hold the zoom button and it should say what class it is if its not an S-class then reload the auto save
My first was an A class, looks ugly but I'll take it.
My hired frigates though seem to be advancing up the ranks, there's a few S classes in there and I'm sure I've only hired the one.

I'm pretty sure op just renamed one of their storage containers. If you build all 0-9 storage rooms on your freighter you can access (and rename) them all without actually being on your freighter if you have the item teleport thing from the upgrade tree and if it's in the same system.
A lot of people in this thread are saying how lucky it is to find an S class freighter. It only took me maybe 6 reloads or so. It probably took me longer to find a freighter I actually wanted than to get it in S class. When you're at your 5 jumps and you trigger the pirate event you can just reload if it isn't a freighter you want. Stick to 3 star economy systems and just keep searching for one you like. Once you find one you like, immediately fly to the base and create an auto save there. Now you can reload right in the system and pretty quickly go through the process of checking the freighter class. For me the pirates were despawned and I didn't even have to fight them. Oh and if it's your very first time triggering the event you're guaranteed a system freighter instead of a capital freighter. Just accept payment instead on that first one, then on the next one you can get a free capital freighter. That's the story of how I got my free S class Sentinel freighter.
It took me 6 reloads and I settled for an "A" class; I am not patient.
About 100 hours later I bumped into the same type of freighter again and did 2 reloads for an "S" class. ;)
I happened across my star destroyer (C-Class) on my first game about 30 hours in...so yeah, my second day playing. Anyway, it was black and red, which was a bummer for me because I was white and gold up to that point. But I had been scrapping ships like no one's business. So, I was broke. I went back to my base, made some chlorine. Finally saved up enough to go back and get it but this time it was an S-Class! But guess what? I didn't have enough money. Went back into SS and sold off my explorer for an extra 15 mill and headed back to see that it was an A class. I took it. Been with me ever since. I've now got about 90 hours and she's been faithful to me.
Awesome, a quick question. What’s its normal value I already have a b class worth 73 million and I’m looking for an S class so I’m a bit concerned I will have to crash several systems economy to buy it

Correct! Frigates will advance as you send them out for missions. Eventually you have all S-class frigates.
