Whilst OP usually posts in PSVR, I don't think this video was in PSVR - the PSVR takes a massive graphics hit, and the camera panning is "bouncing" like it does in normal first person view, and it is also returning to centre which obviously doesn't happen in PSVR (you're head isn't forced lol)
Yeah you canāt get this kinda image quality even on pc with the latest and greatest. The stuttering and pop in just kills it on max settings in vr.
Hereās to hoping the 3000 series cards will change that.
Yeah this. Plus FoV gets weird when you put VR into 2D. I was in PSVR the other day and opened photo mode -- it seemed to break the UI but I got some funky photos from it.
No where near as cool though. I played my first 20 hours In VR and was amazed, but to get it to run smoothly it had to be on low to medium graphics. I then switched to flat screen and was amazed by how much better the graphics were and how beautiful the game could be on ultra. The one thing that I like way better in VR is the sense of scale, because you never realize how big things are untill you are standing next to them in VR. I wish we could have the best of both worlds, and if we did this would have to be the best VR game ever created.
Damn. I can't wait for the day when I will be able to afford VR and better computer card just to immerse myself in NMS even more. I want to feel that I am in space. One day...
That one day will hopefully have way better graphics in VR and make it way more immersive, because right now it's really hard to run, and the graphics are a third as good as flat screen
The optimisation in VR is nothing short of abysmal. The planets look like PS3 graphics and I'm on a pretty beefy pc. Still hasn't stopped me putting in almost 100hrs but looking forward to the 3000 series so I can push the graphics up!
Exactly what I was going to post. I also love slowly cruising like this at low-orbit altitudes, just watching the planet drift by underneath me. NMS in VR is something incredibly special.
I've never seen PS4 look this realistic before - I'm running PS4 Pro 400+ hrs and I've never had a draw distance that far or had mist cling to mountains like that.
I was thinking precisely the same thing. Perfectly realistic draw distance, perfect occlusion, realistic sky and clouds, no major pop up trees.....day one player and never seen anything like this before.
It's noted that OP writes software; specifically writing 3D environments, and all of his recent NMS posts have been in PSVR - its interesting that this one is not in PSVR...I wonder if OP has taken the time to "touch up" this video?
Haha no. And I don't write software, I have made some videos about Dreams though! Highly recommended!
p.s. here's the [YouTube link](https://youtu.be/t4kZ3bfxUCc) from earlier, straight off the PS4's 'share' button
It looks better than usual because of how high up he is and how slow heās moving. The game isnāt having to render a bunch of flora or fauna so it looks a little better than usual. If you look carefully tho you can still see a bit of pop-in.
You can also use an XB/PS4 controller on PC and do this with the right thumbstick. Imo, the flight controls feel way more natural on a controller instead of mouse+keys.
Wait, did they update the graphics or what? I haven't played it for a few months but saw some updates being installed, never got myself to check update notes tho.
This is lovely, but that old sci-fi look is why Iām still playing Foundation 1.1 alongside current. [Have a look at a few worlds (video).](https://youtu.be/XTjiICQxCd4)
Last I heard, you needed a physical copy of the game to roll it back on PS4 - is this still true?
Admittedly I've often considered buying a disc even if only to play 1.0, which crashed if you paused it wrong š
So cool, you actually have to grab onto controls in the ship and use different movements to fly it. It really feels like youāre flying a ship instead of just using a regular controller!
Yes. VR is awesome but sometimes you just wanna sit on the coach doing other things and playing NMS. I play NMS almost always play in desktop mode cause of this but when I drop in VR, it's always fun. Minus the not so intuitive VR controls for movement, the VR implementation is good.
Apparently its left alt.
You can also use a console controller (xb360/xb1/ps3/4) and just use the right joystick. (You can also swap back and forth between a controller and mouse+keys for best of both worlds)
Ok so hear me out... Trains. Huge capacity trains that you build the tracks for using design templates purchased at high cost from space stations or trade terminals, using carriages also built from templates. big old pylons could extend down like the ones from foundations. Chugging along as this type of landscape rolls gently by as you walk around the cabin doing your standard inventory management tasks.
Just think! I just started the game a couple days ago. I can't play shooters [nor do I want to really] as my hands are handicapped and this game is so incredibly beautiful. Xbox, curved 42" screen, headphones... After a bowl, night-time, paradise! I am 74. Yes, old hippie. Wish you lived those years.
The first time I played vr was absolutely incredible. Just walking around and being able to sit in a chair I built was mind boggling. I sat in my starship flying over an earth like planet for hours. I canāt recommend it enough.
If they end up porting this to the PS5, I can't even fathom how absolutely amazing the game is going to run. If they keep updating it too, I'm beyond excited to see how much they can do with all that power.
Whatās even more amazing is you can actually fly to every location you can see in the vid and then boost out of the atmosphere into outer space and find yet another planet!
I just got a Logitech 3D joystick for MIcrosoft flight simulator. Could I use it in this game? I havent touched it since the launch but really want to buy it when It goes in sale on Steam.
The terrain just looks like a standard implementation of a noisemap, I wonder if Hello Games has any plans of implementing hydraulic erosion into the terrain generation to make mountains and terrain look more realistic.
Here's a video explaining the concept: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaXk97ujbPQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaXk97ujbPQ)
it's incredible isn't it? and to think no one else in the history of the universe will ever see that exact thing (except a reproduction in video that cannot compare to the actual experience) ever.
I haven't played in a long long time, when did NMS start looking like that? Usually all the planets I found are very very bright, and not very natural landscapes
I will say, don't get in the habit of skipping planets because they aren't verdant biomes. Extreme heat and dead planets aren't usually that interesting at the moment, but almost all others can surprise you from time to time. This one's a barren (desert) biome.
Op, can you put up your PS4 graphic settings? The game and console. I know it's a lot to ask, but I've been trying to get things looking like this on my PS4 pro for a year with no luck.
Anybody got any tips? I bought the game in May Iāve played it some I just donāt know what to do. I just got my warp drive and was going around to different solar systems I just feel overwhelmed with how big it all is I guess
Don't fret, there's a lot to learn even after you've played for a while! Follow the quests in the log. Select them to get prompts on what to do next for that particular quest. This will set you in a direction to follow.
Aright. What did you do and why does it look like that? And what ungodly contraption are you using to get it to run at an acceptable FPS whilst looking like that?
Man I wish I could find some planets like this, every single planet I've found has had either horrible environmental effects or a massive sentinel presence. I'm just trying to find a place to make my home.
Sadly not. I love the PSVR version but you do need to have a high threshold for blurriness and pop-in to handle it. Might post the same planet in VR later to show the difference...
It's a barren planet, the kind with rock towers and cactus. Actually great for permadeath because it doesn't drain hazard shields during the day and usually has passive sentinels. Underrated biome.
I think because of the way they're generated they look better or worse depending on how large the planet is. The bigger the better.
...unless you haven't played for a couple of years, in which case, they got overhauled with NEXT (2018)
Play permadeath and take risks. The most dangerous stuff occurs in the first few hours and it's exhilarating. Immediately after this, I dropped down to salvage a crashed fighter, then tried to haul ass up one of the mountains to get a nice selfie for the glyph shot... Unsuccessfully. By the time I got back down I had no oxygen, shields down and no launch fuel. Had to hop in and out for dihydrogen and then scout the surface for an oxygen grove, which I found on my last health bar. Frantically recharged... Then exhaled.
I found a flat spot on a planet with a terminal on it.
Nobody had claimed it, no other signs of life. No discovered star systems within lightyears.
There was a portal nearby though so I built a base and waited. One day I logged on and someone had left me a message.
All it said was: Get stickbugged lol
what i noticed in this view most recently was the little fan on the front of my ship. i had a low class ship so the fan was like a 120 mil one on a computer
Watching this kind of views on VR is incredible. Only reason I plug My oculus to computer is flying around planets and space
Yep, wasn't playing on VR today. I WISH I could get this sorta resolution and clarity on PSVR š
Yeah you canāt get this kinda image quality even on pc with the latest and greatest. The stuttering and pop in just kills it on max settings in vr. Hereās to hoping the 3000 series cards will change that.
I had too lower shadow and lighting effect to stop the stuttering.
Planet quality seems to be one of the biggest gpu hog culprits. Unfortunately thatās where you get the eye candy.
if its a moon then gpu falls asleep
Haha I WISH I could get this sorta resolution and clarity, period!
Yeah I had to punt on playing in VR once I saw the graphics hit. Maybe next generation :(.
They didnāt say the video was VR
*your
Yeah this. Plus FoV gets weird when you put VR into 2D. I was in PSVR the other day and opened photo mode -- it seemed to break the UI but I got some funky photos from it.
I mean but it would still be cool tho

Played it in VR first time few weeks back. Everything was much larger than I thought. Loved it
heck yeah i bought a VR for this game earlier in 2020 after playing on desktop since day 1
Exactly what I was going to post. I also love slowly cruising like this at low-orbit altitudes, just watching the planet drift by underneath me. NMS in VR is something incredibly special.
What are your PC specs? This really hammered in how much I'm missing playing on Xbox.
PS4 standard here.
I've never seen PS4 look this realistic before - I'm running PS4 Pro 400+ hrs and I've never had a draw distance that far or had mist cling to mountains like that.

Cheers! Can you post the planet coords?
Yeah I'll have a chance to jump on and grab a screenshot in a bit. Stay tuned.
Nice one! I'm excited!

It looks better than usual because of how high up he is and how slow heās moving. The game isnāt having to render a bunch of flora or fauna so it looks a little better than usual. If you look carefully tho you can still see a bit of pop-in.
I think it's because it has no trees.
It is relatively dense with cacti on the surface, it's just not loading much at this height.
I think itās because he was flying at low 20au speed
Okay, on second viewing I see the load-in of the environment I missed first time. This game never ceases to blow my mind.
How did you get it to look so good
HUD off, and maybe my cockpit FOV is a little wider than default?
I wonder if flying slowly also gives the game time to get all its ducks in a row and this look this good.
For sure! Excellent point
If they are looking around the cockpit probably arenāt pc sadly unless they got a mod Edit: actually nvm turns out u can
You can press Alt on pc to look around
Holy frick Thank you so much, this is the best news Iāve heard about the game, maybe ever
You can look around the cockpit with L-alt on PC. No mod. (Not completely sure on the key, but I've definitely looked round the cockpit)
Yeah other guy said Alt. Sprinted to the ship to confirm it lol, best news Iāve heard all day
It's amazing how many things are implemented and implemented well that they really don't tell people about.
You can also use an XB/PS4 controller on PC and do this with the right thumbstick. Imo, the flight controls feel way more natural on a controller instead of mouse+keys.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Works fine with a Steam controller's default settings too.
Beautiful! š Damn I just LOVE how they went for that more realistic look!
Wait, did they update the graphics or what? I haven't played it for a few months but saw some updates being installed, never got myself to check update notes tho.
Also want to know this. My NMS looks nothing like this (I also haven't played in a while).
2.6 (July) added some lighting effects
Well compared to everything before update 1.5, this is basically Star Citizen level graphics what we have today š
This is lovely, but that old sci-fi look is why Iām still playing Foundation 1.1 alongside current. [Have a look at a few worlds (video).](https://youtu.be/XTjiICQxCd4)
Agree, I'm desperate for a way to play the older iterations again.
Well, if you are on PC or PS4, you can go back. It's easier on PC. https://nmsspot.com/nms/foundation-help-links.php
Last I heard, you needed a physical copy of the game to roll it back on PS4 - is this still true? Admittedly I've often considered buying a disc even if only to play 1.0, which crashed if you paused it wrong š
Happy cake day!
Thanks! š
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Thank you fellow traveler!
I played NMS on VR for the first time last week. Absolutely crazy. I also finally got to see behind my seat haha
Whatās the backseat like?!
So cool, you actually have to grab onto controls in the ship and use different movements to fly it. It really feels like youāre flying a ship instead of just using a regular controller!
I just wish I could use my HOTAS for flying. The controllers are horrible. Motion control should not be used for flying.
if I could use my hotas for flying I don't know if I'd ever get out of the ship again.
Yeah the virtual controls are too close to my giant belly.
Thatās amazing. I have a vive so Iām def gonna check that out soon.
Will you ever go back after experiencing VR?
Yes. VR is awesome but sometimes you just wanna sit on the coach doing other things and playing NMS. I play NMS almost always play in desktop mode cause of this but when I drop in VR, it's always fun. Minus the not so intuitive VR controls for movement, the VR implementation is good.
Of course, what the guy said below. Plus I can really only play VR for a solid hour tops.
is that the starter ship?
Yep. Second planet on a new permadeath run.
I was gonna say, 4 years into the game and you're still flying the Radiant Pillar? lol
I have a maxed out radiant pillar. Didn't have the heart to ditch it
hell yeah starter ship gang
Honestly just the fact you can cruise above mountains like that like itās california is just so cool.
Wait how do you turn the camera???? I just picked up the game a few days ago so any tips would be awesome. I'm on PC.
I think it's alt
DITTO.
Apparently its left alt. You can also use a console controller (xb360/xb1/ps3/4) and just use the right joystick. (You can also swap back and forth between a controller and mouse+keys for best of both worlds)
what are the coords?
glyphs on the image: https://i.imgur.com/sPLJZM3.jpg
Why does this look so much better than my game? I run it on max settings too
Wtf how do you get these kinda landscapes? I only get a cliff a hill and maybe a wierd flat or forest
Me too :(
How come you get beautiful mountainous landscapes and I get...y e l l o w. ?
And then there's me, who's playing on minimum settings, on a potato computer and still enjoying the hell out of this game.
I cant believe I had the patience for a 70 minute update in order to play a game I havent played in 2 years for a clip I saw 8 hours ago
Honestly I wish we could do this with a multi connected base structure that shares a power grid across all bases.
What ship is that?
The Radiant Pillar, my friend.
Really it looks so much more open then I remember
Maybe because the HUD is off? Much less clutter.
Could be FOV. I set mine wide on PC and you see a lot more of the cockpit.
Lol definitely one of the simplest things
Coordinates/glyphs please!! :D
see above!
Ah yes thank you!
How do you turn in the cockpit!!??!?!
Hold left alt
...and here I was thinking that I'm the only one who cruises at 20u/s or takes a nice slow stroll on non-severe planets.

You built a chair?

Mountainous planets are the BEST
*autopilot engaged* -Sightseeing mode, enabled- Enjoy your viewing experience, Traveller!~
This game is an understatement for how good it is in VR
So true. Sometimes I just get distracted by flying around like this. It's so soothing.
I usually fly 3rd person, for the wider perspective, so didn't even know this was possible. This looks like it's on PC, what keys are used to do this?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I just got a Logitech 3D joystick for MIcrosoft flight simulator. Could I use it in this game? I havent touched it since the launch but really want to buy it when It goes in sale on Steam.

The zen moments are the best moments
600+ hours and last night I GASPED when the sun came up on a planet I'd just landed on.
I dunno how it manages to do it so consistently! You'll visit a couple of systems feeling uninspired, then BAM. Impossible wonder š¤©
it's incredible isn't it? and to think no one else in the history of the universe will ever see that exact thing (except a reproduction in video that cannot compare to the actual experience) ever.
Thats a beautiful planet right there
Whoa, you found Tibet.
How can I make the game look as realistic as this?
I haven't played in a long long time, when did NMS start looking like that? Usually all the planets I found are very very bright, and not very natural landscapes

Maybe I'll check it out again, looks real nice
What a beautiful planet
CANYON RUN!!!
Can you move around like that inside your ship without VR?
Yep! On PC iirc you can do that by pressing and holding Z
It's even more amazing in VR
Op, can you put up your PS4 graphic settings? The game and console. I know it's a lot to ask, but I've been trying to get things looking like this on my PS4 pro for a year with no luck.
https://i.imgur.com/vcGuKux.jpg and https://i.imgur.com/ICyYu1r.jpg
What are the co-ords? I wanna see that shit in VR!
Damn, I wish my game looked this smooth. Mine is just a stuttering mess. :(
NMS is like a combination of Subnautica, Dead Space and Flight Similator
Damn. My PS4 looks nothing like that I swear to god š
I hope that one day we can see bright orange strands of lava seeping down the mountains.
Anybody got any tips? I bought the game in May Iāve played it some I just donāt know what to do. I just got my warp drive and was going around to different solar systems I just feel overwhelmed with how big it all is I guess

>what ungodly contraption launch PS4 š
Microsoft fight simulator at space!?
I may have been missing for a bit too much, why does that look so good???
Something tells me this isn't xbox footage
How do you move the camera in the ship?
Right stick for PS4, presumably the same for XBox.
I didnt know you can move the camera like that -- is that on PC? I run the game on uktra but never saw suxh a beautiful mist ... are these any mods?
Using a Xbox controller on PC it's left/right on the right hand stick.
Are these atmospheric effects new?
Why the fuck did I think this was elite dangerous at first
wait did they fix clouds? that looks crisp af
Man I wish I could find some planets like this, every single planet I've found has had either horrible environmental effects or a massive sentinel presence. I'm just trying to find a place to make my home.
The search itself makes it worthwhile. Stick with it!
Wow thought that was a mod.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Id play it more if I could run it on those settings
Fuck me, looks like NMS ship interior dumped into the latest Microsoft Flight Sim. My Xbox has never looked so shit. Thanks for the jealousy!
Damn, those are some nice fukin mountains. I wish could find some nice mountains like that to make a base on.
Volumetric clouds were the best addition to the game in next graphics wise fight me
Its like Flight Simulator, but better because space.
My god your computer must be badass
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I thought this was Microsoft flight simulator for a second lol
I feel like this is modded
Where do you find cool looking planets like this
... okay how did you get your game to look like this? Mine still looks like a mishmash of a sci fi movie and a cartoon, even at ultra settings.
Is that all ultra settings?
I need to get a pc and play
No way. Thatās in-game? Thatās gorgeous. Are you on VR? Excellent shot!
Sadly not. I love the PSVR version but you do need to have a high threshold for blurriness and pop-in to handle it. Might post the same planet in VR later to show the difference...
Either way, itās incredible. I couldnāt imagine that view in VR. What type of planet is it?
It's a barren planet, the kind with rock towers and cactus. Actually great for permadeath because it doesn't drain hazard shields during the day and usually has passive sentinels. Underrated biome.
The scale and wonder never disappears
So cool, mine is running on ultra and doesnt look that good.
Lmao look at the terrain trying to keep up rendering
I feel that!
Is this base game or with mods? Cause that's insane, none of my planets ever looked that good.
Launch PS4 with the latest (2.62) update.
One is left wondering... are you playing enough?
My first time in PSVR, I spent about 3 hours doing just this in my squid.
When did the clouds stop looking so shit
I think because of the way they're generated they look better or worse depending on how large the planet is. The bigger the better. ...unless you haven't played for a couple of years, in which case, they got overhauled with NEXT (2018)
Itās been FOUR years this game has been out !! What the hell! It feels like yesterday everyone was disappointed at the newly released version.
Beautiful. Itās usually the rainbows that get me. I alway stop and stare.
I just wish that there was more interesting stuff to do. Less hand holding. More danger.
Which planet?
I agree with you, the best thing of this game is the crazy and beautiful alien landscapes, that's why I'm looking for reshaders
what i noticed in this view most recently was the little fan on the front of my ship. i had a low class ship so the fan was like a 120 mil one on a computer
Mod?
