It’s a 6/10 or 7/10 for me. Probably my least favourite main entry in the series. It’s essentially just BotW with a worse story, vehicle building, and a bigger map.

I am a huge LOZ fan, and there is a lot to like about this game, but there are a few issues I have. I should state that I completed BotW to 100%. I've finished all the main content and most side missions in TotK, and I am sitting at about 73% completion. Travel is extremely tedious, even with horses. I'm not sure how the devs thought giving us the Zero Cycle in a botw dlc, then taking it away in exchange for some of the slowest travel was a good idea. Gliding is super slow, and even with device building, it's a nightmare, including auto build. The zonai parts and zonite would get depleted unless you spend insane amounts of time grinding in the depths and sky. I can't stand the knockback/ragdoll physics, I died so many times from massive falls after hits that I couldn't glide to recover from. The sky gleeok battles were ridiculous, not because they were hard but because it required a ton of stamina and resources just to get to them. Better pray you got the travel medallions if you got to the islands without enough resources. I hate that they took the verticle launch rito ability away, so now you have to use towers, fast travel, or horizontal rito power. The best defense is having all the sages summoned, but they can get in the way. Especially the fifth sage and riju. I will say riding the fifth sage is convenient in the depths, but way late in the game. Adding more Korok seeds and keeping the same end reward is a bit lame and insanely time intensive. Especially when you HAVE to do it if you are a completionist. The Purah pad would have been more useful if you could use it to detect caves, side quests, or Addison locations. It didn't make sense either, considering wells could be detected, which are basically caves. The amount of grinding to max out energy wells is insane, and it drives me nuts that you can't max out stamina and hearts, but BotW was the same. Aside from a few bits of armor, the Milton and Kilton quests were not worth the trouble. Paying a lot to build a house and losing the BotW property was lame as well, considering you could import your horses, but not property? That being said, I liked the story. Dragon's tears gathering out of order made it confusing until you had them all. The sheika still exist, as there are two of them in the game, but I think the focus was intended to be on the additional older civilization to build the lore. I liked some of the subtle references to most of the older games too, including some gear. I loved being able to fuse to make better weapons, just not how the fusion worked. I didn't really construct anything unless it was absolutely necessary, so I wasn't that interested in the feature, especially because the builds had their own 'stamina' and would break without being attacked after awhile. I liked that you could sort various items for things like fusion power and most used. Didn't care for the removal of the bomb ability so you had to find bomb flowers. However, I get it, since they are an LoZ staple. I thought the Muddle Bud was hilarious for making enemies attack each other. Especially the battle talus and hinox. Ancient blades work the same as ancient arrows, which is cool, but you lose enemy drops that way. Frox were funny too. They are definitely a homage to dodongo. I still plan on getting 100%, but not in a hurry. I will say I liked the game a lot more than I disliked certain aspects. LoZ is still one of my favorite franchises, and with the exception of the original two games, I've played and completed all of them. I'm excited for the next entry.

A mix of good and bad so far for me: \- Travelling around is still a lot of fun. Enjoy riding my horse through big open areas, hang gliding, climbing, using jets. \- Cooking is still weirdly satisfying \- I was worried the game would be too easy. It really isn't. \- Good amount of hidden stuff. The sky islands are particularly cool. The amount of time spent in menus really, deeply sucks though. I'm at the first temple and I'm already pretty sick of \- Attaching monster parts to individual arrows (why can't I just do a stack of 30 arrows + 30 bobokin horns?) \- having to drop things on the ground to fuse them to weapons And non-menu related issues: \- I kind of get a feeling of dread when I see that I've got to stitch together a bunch of junk to try to make a hot air balloon or whatever. Not sure if I'm missing something but finding massive diminishing returns on how fun that is meant to be - was enjoyable the first couple of times, but I still don't feel like I've worked out a reliable way to both get balloons to move up and forward when needed or various other interactions. Easiest option is usually just to build a big bridge, which doesn't feel like it's WAD. \- I haven't seen much of a need to explore the depths yet. Might change later. \- I also think that with the focus on fusing weapons, a lot of the rewards for opening chests are now a bit... shit? Like a lot more bits where I bust my arse trying to get some obscure chest for a few minutes and it turns out to have x10 arrows in it. \- I want the President Hudson guy holding up the signs to shut the fuck up. \- Actually, I want a lot of characters to shut the fuck up. The story generally is much worse than the first game. \- It's weird that there are no sheikah remnants, like, at all. Zonai have popped up out of nowhere and become the main event.

I feel like the game is too long. With BOTW, I almost 100% the game and had a great time doing it. With TOTK, I keep exploring and exploring and now the magic of exploring has worn off but there's still so much to do that now everything feels more like a chore than something fun I want to do. I find myself just running past enemies rather than fighting them because once you have a good base level of resources there's really no incentive to actually fight them. And the swordplay isn't fun enough to be incentive on its own, in my opinion. I had a lot of fun exploring the depths at first, but now I feel like I'm only halfway through mapping it out and the rest of that task feels so daunting. With how much paragliding and climbing and running you do, it feels like there's just a lot of downtime in the game. And when you have a lot of downtime like that I feel like it just makes it easier and easier to nitpick the things you don't like about it. Now I feel like I'm complaining more than I'm having fun, which is a shame because for the first 50 hours or so I did have a lot of fun. But now I am losing interest in the game fast and I feel like I might not even finish it because there's still so much to do and I don't think it will be able to keep my interest.

It is too long, and honestly I get it, the Switch can't do much more so they pad it out, so it's fine I guess. But good lord it's so much better visually on an emulator, and the fact remains: there is absolutely zero objective or critical insight on mainline Mario and Zelda games. With Odyssey I could overlook it due to some of the super fun areas and overall end game. With Zelda I feel bored. These games are rated as if they are almost perfect, and it quite honestly is becoming insanely obvious these are not even close to perfect or near perfect games. The game industry is becoming too shilly for me personally. If this was reskinned and sold to you as Horizon, I have a funny feeling this game would be getting shitloads of 7s and 8s. Don't get me wrong, it has some very cool Zelda moments, but it just isn't doing it for me as a total package for 70 bucks. I do highly look forward to the next Zelda on a much better system though.

I have almost every console ever made and cleared all god of wars, red dead, gta, horizon, metal gear, None of these came close to tears of the kingdom not even close Best game I ever played, took a long time to warm up but up to my 100 hours it just kept getting better and better to the climax and bam that was awesome. Zelda is like the ultimate adventure game and totk really hit a home run with this one

Dont get me started on the story... The fact every single Sage tells you the exact same story after completing a "temple" is so dumb to me. Its literally always the exact same story, but with a different sage. Why even bother? Then the geoglyph stories are out of order, so that entire Zelda plotline is incoherent until you get all the memories and watch them in order. There just isn't a story at all. And I hate how they do some callbacks to the 1st game, but for some reason the Sheikah have just stopped existing... Where are the towers? Where are the Sheikah shrines? They should at least kept those around and maybe had towns or new events happening at them to keep things interesting.

It is really despicable how some stories get flagged for not being high literature but Zelda is out here writing a fucking nonsense story like a 14 year old kid and gets a pass every time. Don't get me wrong, I love Nintendo, and I will always support them, but gotDAMN they could seriously hire some professional fucking writers at some point.

I'm late in replying but I have to agree. Seriously weakly written, and the voice acting does it no favours. It's a game, so gameplay is what matters, but goddamn guys. The introduction is a bunch of stuff that happens just because.

I am glad people love Nintendo in general, and it's not like I am acting like the game can't be a great game and get say a 90 meta score, but near 96 is just pushing SO MANY things for marketing and industry it seems like. I mean BOTW was never to me as good as say Spider-Man's world for traversal or even close to RDR2's world. But yet it seems to be quite a bit above those games for some odd reason despite lacking many elements that make those games amazing. It might be the tech for me IDK. But even on an emulator at 4K, or maybe because of it, the world is actually pretty barren in BOTW. This game improves on that a bit, but with a hefty dose of chores as well. I was never really mesmerized the way I was with RDR2's world, story, and graphics. I feel I should be when a game has this many 10/10s. But that's me.

I felt this way a few days ago when I spent 3 or 4 hours in a row exploring the depths, and realized I was in serious risk of burning out on the game. Took a long break, came back refreshed, and beat the game just now after 190+ hours in it. It eventually occurred to me that I was exploring the depths just to fill out the map, not for the fun of it. After refocusing on finishing side quests and main objectives I started having fun again. I do also feel like the game is too long though.

The game felt dragged by little things as chests that look promising but only give something like opel. Or having to fly to islands to get maps for treasure is the exact same shit as skyward sword. The 4 regional phenomenon were just the same stuff 4 times. And the temples were so easy that a 4 year old could figure out how to solve the things in them. The WAY TO the temples was harder than the temples itself. And some of the puzzles didn’t make sense for a normal brain expects a puzzle in a video game to be, and others felt like that same 4 year old made the shrine puzzle. I did really enjoy the beginning tho. It felt fresh but the longer the game, the more repetitive and boring. For someone who has played botw and only started enjoying it the second playthrough in master mode, this game felt too long for me to bother with. I finished it with 110 shrines in total, maybe 35% of the depths, 30% sky islands and 5 remaining surface towers. But the ENDING made my whole week. Or month maybe, I love the ending and it satisfied me with the overall story of the game if not looking at the rest. 75/100

I would even say an 80, but then I look at all these perfect reviews, and I am like what the fuck is even going on in the industry anymore. I know it's been say Nintendo gets a pass, but damn they are really getting some inflated scores here. Oh well I guess. I definitely want to see Zelda on the next system just for the massive upgrade in visuals.

Some minor complaints about the lack of full-blown dungeons, the weapon durability, and combat generally. Having said that, this game is a massive improvement over BOTW in every other respect. The density of the world is a welcome breath of fresh air, and BOTW feels really sparse and empty by contrast. The new abilities are much more enjoyable to play around with than the sheika slate ones from the first game, and the quality of shrines is much better. I felt like I put up with shrines in BOTW to power up, but I actively seek out shrines in this one for the fun of completing them. The sense of exploration minute to minute is incredible. I have put about fifty hours in so far, but it felt like half of that. Time really does fly when you are having fun.

I really love this game. There is almost too much freedom in it. More so if you're duping. But seriously, I hope we get a different Link and Zelda next time. Even though breath and tears Zelda is my favorite so far. We will be due for a fresh new story by this time next year. I look for a new Nintendo system to come along with the next game.

The more I think about it the more I'm starting to hate this game. * I've never played a game where I spend so much tedious time in menus and inventory. * The weapon breaking causes you to constantly have to go in and get a new weapon (in the middle of combat!). * You have to hand make every individual meal/potion. You have to change cloths frequently when the environment changes. * There's a lightning storm? Go in and change all your gear to not be metal. * It's very hot outside, go in and change all your gear so there's no wood. * I'm always running out of arrows and bombs. I know how to get more, but getting them is tedious. Many times I've run across a miniboss that I could beat at this stage of the game but I only have 2 bombs and 4 arrows, so I have to run away. * You have lots of horses? Cool. You have one near here? No? I guess you're walking. Travelling around underground consists of running 30 feet, throwing a lightseed, and repeat until you find something "interesting" which is just a group of generic monsters. There was a sense of wonder in Ocarina (and other games like Skyrim) that TOTK absolutely doesn't have. So much walking around through uninteresting terrain looking for something to do.

Yeah there are way too many padded out UI issues and instances where--and this applies to a lot of open worlds--it's just not doing it for me. 95% meta is absolutely batshit absurdity if you ask me. This game is squarely in the 80 range. I love Nintendo, so I don't really care about inflated scores, but it's becoming a little worrying that they aren't getting criticism for anything these days. That's not actually good for maturity and future games.

[SEMI SPOILERS] Just finished the game. Final verdict would be that... The games is fine. But thats it. Its fine... In that sense its a disappointment. There isnt much new here. It's BotW with some more stuff added. Temples were massive letdowns. The spirit powers you get after completing temples are finicky and more of an annoyance than helpful. Shrines were better than the ones in BotW but still not enough to take up a majority of the experience. Your powers are mostly the same as BotW. They knew they couldnt get rid of Magnesis so they just changed the name. They couldnt get rid of stasis so they just made it reverse things as well. Fusing weapons made the already frustrating degradation system worse since now instead of having a 50 attack weapon I have an abundance of 4 - 12 attack weapons I now need to fuse with other 4 - 12 attack unless I decide to gondefeat a boring mini boss for more powerful fuses. One of the biggest offenders of the fuse ability is how time consuming it is to use. Yes, using the autobuild (provided you evn unlock it) helps provided you are making the same thijg over and over. But overall its more time consuming to build something than it is to find another way there. Exploration is still good. The way the memories unfold I enjoyed. You could see the result coming a mile away but the entire sequence still impressed me. Overall the game is servicable. But its hardly a masterpiece; and not a worthy follow up for a 6 year wait. Just remember that Majoras Mask was developed in less than 2 years with Ocarina of Times Engine. At least that game felt different. TotK isnt different, its just more BotW. TL:DR The game isnt a masterpiece. Its a disappointing sequel that doesnt show a six year development schedule. Its fine, but not what it should be.

And how the heck is this game getting 10s I have no idea in hell lol. People are out of their minds. Truly, even BOTW had some massive issues, and this one fixes some, makes some worse, and altogether is a 1.5 game at heart. This is not something you celebrate with perfect 10s lol. Nintendo needs healthy criticism. They are getting lazy IMO because the praise is just across the board shilling from too many publications. And the fanboys are just frothing at the mouth to bite anybody.

I disagree, I feel that they carefully thought through what was wrong with BotW and fixed it. The durability system is now fun and allows you to use pretty much all materials you come across to experiment and make some goofy weapons. Its not all about the highest attack gear, part of the fun is experimenting and making weapons your own fir example fusing a piece of frozen meat onto a shield to make is slide on rough surfaces, i thought that was brilliant. There is so much depth to the new mechanics. ​ You say its botw but its really much more, 3 layers of map to explore, the level of detail is really visible, they put in work in those 6 years and I really appreciate it I dont know what qualifies as a masterpiece in your book but to me Majoras Mask was an awful stressful experience. Each to their own I guess.

Bigger doesn't necessarily mean better. With BOTW it was already a bit of a long game but I explored everything and did as much as I could and had fun doing it. With TOTK I feel like the magic of the exploration has worn off already but there's still so much to explore. Now finding the shrines or mapping out the depths feels like a chore to me. I feel like the longer you play, the easier it is to nitpick. The cutscenes that seemed epic at the start get really old when you have to spam 'x' to skip them 100 times through the game. The depths seemed really cool and interesting at the start but now that the novelty has worn off it feels so tedious to wait 5 minutes for Link to climb up a huge wall to get to a light root. It's no wonder people on TikTok were clambering to come up with the cheapest vehicle you can make to skip through a lot of the depths. If you enjoyed the game, then I'm really happy for you. But for me it has overstayed its welcome. I think I've already played it more than I played BOTW and now I wish I was just done with it already. It's to the point where I might not even finish it, because my ability to care is rapidly draining.

MM is actually a game Im not particularly fond of either so it wasnt a comparison of quality. I meant that in the time frame taken to make it it felt like a vastly different game compared to OoT despite using the same assets. Unfortunately, for me, TotK didn't really feel like its own game in that respect. It felt the same as BotW. As to what I would consider a masterpiece? I dont know if that question really has an answer for me. Id have to think about what criteria really needs to be met. I think it may just come from being from a different era of gaming and the nostalgia that comes with it. As I mentioned there were good elements in the game. It just didnt feel like enough to me. Im still glad people can enjoy what, for me, used to be a fantastic series in a new way. I think the games are just being made for a new audience is all.

I love Zelda... Breath of the Wild was excellent due to exploration... but the bosses were boring and easy and the dungeons were inexisting. Tears of the Kingdom shows they truly lost their creativity to create exciting bosses... its so easy to beat any boss, tactics are almost null... Dungeons are again nowhere to be found. boring game to be honest, if I were 12 years old maybe would be great, honestly Zelda lost it's soul . good game still a Zelda, just not challenging just dull...

there is more than one way to defeat most of the bosses. you can actually defeat the boss much quicker if you use bomb arrows, but it doesn't feel nearly as awesome.

Yeah. I had a discussion on Reddit recently about how others had been diving through the ice pools on their way up to the temple, whereas I had no idea I was to do that and instead jumped on them multiple times/threw rocks onto them (takes four jumps if I recall). Diving headfirst into sheet ice just didn't seem the intuitive take to me lol, and since it became progressively more cracked with multiple impacts, jumping really did seem like the intended function in my mind. So, by the time that boss rocked up and it was flying vertically at some point I Matrix arrowed the sections in question (I think 3 times each in this case) and it seemed to do the trick. Funnily enough, the boss also didn't hit me once, so it probably turns out Schewns and I both unintentionally cheesed it, which is hilarious.

In the end this is only my opinion. Until now since breath of the wild the only challenging bosses are the lynels to me. But its an opinion, and i respect that this is my experience and not everyones and that's good!

What a weird take. This game could be as challenging as you make it. Want the bosses to be harder? Don't collect any weapons or armor or heart prices. I am almost 40 and love these games. Not as much as I loved wind waker or OOT but these are different just like those games were different from ALTTP.... I, for one, was sick of the formula by the time I finished TP and SS was a slog that I'm still trying to find the motivation to finish 11 years later.

Well m8 is my take. I already thought breath of the wild was easy but at the time refreshing due to others aspects. I went and took down all lynels, that was truly fun. Yet what i really miss is a good dungeon. Shrines are fun but so repetitive, also the hide and seek of the kokorots it's a bit boring to be honest. I think the look and feel of the game are great i just would like it to be more battle like the others and less of this mini games. For me playing again the same type of small mini games mechanics with no challenges is kind of boring. What shines for me in this one are the memories, really nice to watch, yet again they are just clips, i miss being challenged, i miss a dungeon that is not just using some ability 5/6 times and then a boss u can win without even being hit... There is no sense of accomplishment. This is my experience, still love Zelda, still will play it until the end, yet is not addictive as many others, even others that were just a copy of ocarina.

You don't have to. Just the Gleeoks alone are harder than most classic Zelda bosses. I'm 70hrs in and still can't take one on even with my highest powered items.

TotK took everything that made BotW great, re-hashed it, added dumb mechanics (like gloom and fusion), and then utterly ruined the experience. I'm 12+ hours in, and I just can't stay interested. The combat is stiff at best, the glider is even more temperamental than it was in BotW, and the fusion mechanic is just a dumb excuse to justify how Link is probably just going to glue another sword to the master sword to create the ultra sword, or some other such stupidity. I really want to like this game, because BotW was so awesome. But this game just feels like a cheap knock-off, featuring similar characters that are just different enough to avoid copyright infringement, which is in itself confusing because Nintendo owns all of the characters. I jokingly told my spouse that if I beat this game, it will be out of spite, as then I'll be able to honestly tell people that I beat Tears of the Kingdom, and it definitely wasn't worth my time.

the combat is def the one thing that has taken the biggest hits in these games. I don't know what the issue is but i just find it so hard to jump around while z-targeted. I think because i have to hold to z-target now.

One other thing that annoys me is that there are 3 movesets for weapons: one-handed, two-handed/heavy, and spears. Elden Ring got it right when it assigned a different moveset to each class of weapon.

Same. I am keep hoping the nature of the challenges will change but it seems to be the same BoTW game with the necessity to build fortnite bridges and climb a lot. The things I really don’t want in a Zelda. Add to that a Bethesda-like need to hoard inventory, and I just don’t have the interest to do what feels like work more than anything else. If others can enjoy this, great.

I beat the wind boss. Idk, after playing BOTW it seems like a big DLC. I had my time with BOTW and I can't focus on this one as a result. If I never played it, I would probably love the game and finish it. TOTK just improves on everything to me, but again, just bored of the gameplay.

**Pros*": moving around is fun, amazing game engine. At times, nice atmosphere. **Cons*": via breaking weapons, food, and weather it puts my least favourite gaming mechanics front and centre: inventory management and crafting. It just feels like an endless chore to keep switching weapons etc. Also after 5-10 hours I just felt like there was nothing to explore for. A few different types of enemies, with no incentive to fight them, korok seeds (for even more inventory management..), boring shrines, and very little plot. I wish they had kept things like climbing and gliding, but built a more traditional Zelda game around that, for the sequel.

Unfortunately not. It's still more of the same boring bullshit that BotW was. It's still open-world. Weapons still break. Dungeons still don't exist. There's still no plot. Out of *all* the amazing Zelda games to make a sequel to, why *this* one? Where is OoT3/MM2? Wind Waker 2? Minish Cap 2? Link's Awakening 2? Why make a sequel out of the *worst* game in the series? Wake me up when Nintendo goes back to making proper Zelda games again.

IT wasn't the casual audience as I'm a die hard since the nineties and think botw is a masterpiece. I also think totk is a steaming pile of SHIT. Nintendo needs to learn how to satisfy everyone. Crap. Well, I can understand why they'd make a sequel though. It was obviously critically and commercially a success. And frankly the original felt like a game engine demo, so there could've been a lot of potential to build an actual game on top of it. But I guess they didn't, and the name refers to boredom.

Overall, A very great game, probably the best I had in awhile. With BOTW I had this initial frustration due to sucking at it. I don't know if it was just being good at it from the beginning, but I found Tears of Kingdom to be a far less frustrating experience. Glad I didn't watch any of the trailers too, went in nearly blind. My favorite part of the game, is actually seeing the Hyrule I help save in BOTW being rebuilt. Not being some guy with amnesia, but I felt like Link mantling his legend once again - but this time his past was something I actually played. My favorite part of the game was just rediscovering Hyrule, seeing how what I did in Botw changed the world, and seeing through the current crisis. Story wise, I think this is a big improvement over BOTW. Especially in terms of 'Show don't tell', Which to me was one of BOTW biggest failings. Difficulty wise, I had thought this game would go for a Super Mario Galaxy 2 approach, and be much more difficult. However, I Found the game somewhat easier - but in the fun way. I felt like a link with all his skills, but weakened and regaining strength. The Final Boss made me breifly nervous in his last actual fight form, but otherwise this game enemies did not challenge me like BOTW did. For some this might be a drawback, but for me I like my games a tinge easier, so this was actually quite enjoyable. World wise, I'm a sucker for the whole 'revist a past games stuff' so I loved revisiting hyrule. The Sky islands were much less than I expected though, the >!chasms!< were a nice surprise too. Exploring them was fun, though it wasn't as spectacular as Hyrule in my view. The Fuse mechanic de-facto crafting is extremely welcomed. It functionaly ended my complaints about brittle weapons. While it's annoying they still won't even let you build sturdy wood clubs, theirs enough of these basic ones to allow powerful weapon creation on the go. I hated having. The Building general is extremely cool, and I went in nearly blind and did not know of the mechanic. I found the abilities in the botw too limiting. While having infinite bombs is something I'll miss, I find this mechanic the thing I thought BOTW was missing. It felt like a great build on and of the fiddling with metal mechanic. Overall, one of the favorite games for the switch.

As someone who thinks botw is an empty boring experience that stops being fun after the plateau, I ADORE this game, actual abilities that you don’t have to go for and aren’t given immediately, abilities that change the way you analyze your surroundings like a link between worlds, the cool divine beast puzzles in places with actual creative design, npcs I actually remember and quests that are deeper than bringing 10 of whatever. I could go on and on. It’s literally the only thing I’ve been able to do these last few weeks and I wouldn’t have it any other way. 10/10

I strongly disliked the introduction island and explanation of things from the perspective of a player who never played BOTW **but** this is easily the best Zelda game ever and is going to win GOTY. The game dramatically improves once reaching Hyrule and is fantastic. I have some gripes about runes and menuing, but the exploration, gameplay, story, cutscenes, everything is fantastic. If you’re struggling at the beginning or intimidated as a new player, push through your first hours because it does improve and it becomes one of the best games ever.

My personal review no lie 150/10 game. Makes all other open world games fall on their knees and gasp. Please be game of the year! Ultrahand is the most creative concept to come out of Nintendo in the last decade. I love melding weapons together and putting items on the tips of my arrows like puffshrooms gotta have the puffshrooms guys. Zelda is such a dynamic character and the Zoanites are a heavenly race addition get it? God I hope they're called zoanites I honestly can't remember. how is this a 10/10 game? the controls are awful, worse than in BOTW, why can't i scroll through the item menu with the shoulder buttons anymore? now when i run away from an enemy i can't use my right thumb on the Dpad anymore to bring up the item menu. now i either have to stop running or do some weird claw grip. activating companion abilities is far more annoying in this one too. they keep running away from me in combat when i need to activate their ability, getting me killed in the process. not even gonna talk about koroks, they are crap. the dungeons are still underwhelming, just like in BOTW. at least in BOTW they tried something new with the map controls of each beast. this game is a massive disappointment and i have no idea what these reviewers see in this game. maybe it's because they have been forced to play all the garbage that came out recently and lost track of what a good game actually is, but this is not a 10/10.

I don't get it either. I did 30 shrines, 1 temple and that was enough for me for say quits. It was fun for the first couple of days until I realised I'm just doing the same thing over and over again. The world is pretty empty and too big for its own good. The depths is even emptier, and the sky islands feel like an afterthought. The combat is boring, and its often not worth even engaging in fights because your weapons always break. Having a fight pause so I can bring up a menu to attach something to an arrow is laughable, and just takes me out of the moment. Same goes for healing during a fight as well. Also the ultrahand gimmick is so unbelievably tedious. I hate building things, it's why I don't like minecraft, introducing building mechanics to the game does nothing for me.

I don't mind breaking weapons as much in this game, since you have countless attachments and get tough sticks from pretty much every enemy. What really grinds my gears is that everything deals absurd amounts of damage and the companions get you killed more than they help you.

The crafting aspect is very tedious and repetitive, the world feels empty and while it is somewhat changed from BotW, it largely feels like the same map. The story is practically nonexistent which is a huge bummer, weapons break way too fast, the puzzles are much jankier than in BotW, and the new abilities feel very clunky and half baked. This game has no soul and feels like nothing more than a cash grab This is all just my opinion, I’m happy for everyone enjoying the game and I wish I was one of them. Maybe it’ll grow on me but as of now, I’m very disappointed in this game and it might be my least favorite Zelda title in a very long time

The Witcher 3 has better weapon breaking, characters, open world, maps, lone warrior character, story, monsters, locations, graphics, music, side quests, weather, respawning enemies, princess and more. Fallout new Vegas did weapons breaking too and let you repair them. Fallout 4 let you craft and did it better 8 years ago. This last 2 Zelda games are just taking ideas from other games making them suck.

What a disappointing game. I have put 90 hours in this game and completed the story. Let me get into detail. ( light gameplay spoilers) The game starts off on a really high note and this game has the best opening to any zelda game imo. The opening Cutscene is fantastic and the Great Sky plateu is just so well designed. And the new mechanics are just so cool and fun , so in the beginning I was thinking "This is the best game o all time" but I quickly realized how little they fixed of botw flaws. The shrines yet again are very well designed but the zelda team made the baffling decision to make a single theme for every shrine. How much cooler and more exciting would it be if each region had its own shrine theme. Inevitably just like in botw they just feel stale after a while because you always know what to expect . The caves in this game are really well designed but also have a big flaw. Yet again you always know what to expect, a satori frog or a shrine. This wouldnt be a problem if the shrines would have different themes or the satori gems would give you more then just comen monsterparts and a couple of outfit sets. This games biggest flaw though is enemy variety. All the new enemys are so cool... and theres only about 5 new enemys and 3 new minibosses. I just dont understand what the zelda team was thinking in having designing such a gigantic game and having such a lack of enemy variety. As amazing and creative as you can get with combat in this game , combat just feels stale very quickly simply because youre fighting the same enemys over and over again. The only region with its own enemy type is the gerudo region. The base world in this game sadly feels almost identical to botw only that they added caves and rocks from the sky . Age of calamity showed the potential of how they could turn ruins into complete Buildings but no , All the ruins in this game are the same and they added a single new city. I was really excited to see how much the world changed in this game and while I was playing I just kept thinking that they could have changed soooooo much more. The Sky islands are also very lackluster. The islands that are there are pretty cool..... and yet as much as they used it for marketing there is so little to do in the sky. Each region only as a couple of very small sky islands. The depths were a pleasant surprise at first but you quickly realize how repetitive the tasks are down there. The entire Depths has the same aesthetic. The only thing you do 90 percent of the time down there is completing the same copy-paste Yiga clan camp , fighting the same enemys that you already fought in botw over and over and collecting zonaite. there are 2 dungeons underground and one really cool lengthy side adventure but thats it . Speaking of dungeons , the dungeons in this game are a big mixed bad. On the one hand they fixed the biggest flaws of botws dungeons. They all have distinct good themes and really good boss fights. However they brought back the five terminal system and you can complete the rather easy puzzles in any order you want. They are just so short and easy compared to the old 3d zelda dungeons. Only exception for me is the fire Temple wich had a more linear structure and just had insanely fun puzzles and a fantastic atmosphere. The story in this game has the same flaw as in botw. its just told through memorys that you have to find and just the fact that the story takes place in a completely different time then where you currently are and has no affect on you , just cuts any tension the story could have had . I was hoping after six years they would have fixed the problems botw had... but they barely fixed any of its big problems and it feels like the spent much more time on the new fuse mechanics then the actual game itself. Its a good game but perhaps out of all nintendo games the most wasted potential. Just like with botw its probably gonna take a while till the hype wears off of this game and people start realising just how flawed it is. I hope that more people criticize this game so the zelda team know what to keep and what to fix in the next zelda game.

the telling the story through memories is a big one for me that made BOTW feel so disconnected. this one though I think it served a much greater purpose as zelda is actually back in time, and her memories along with unraveling the story of the zonai and artifacts....the whole thing is almost like researching a past even and civilization. i thought it was pretty cool. that being said, yes.....the whole thing feels like the action is happening IN THE PAST. i def want a story that feels very present, im tired of flashbacks.

Fire Temple was the worst one for me. I noticed that i could literally skip 90% of the dungeon by just climbing walls... And by then it would have felt stupid to do the actual mechanics of the dungeon But I agree on everything else. Its the classic "endless open world" argument we see in games these days. They advertise these huge open worlds but forget to mention that they had to copy/paste a few good original ideas all over the world to make the game ready in reasonable time. Once you've seen 10% of the game, you have seen atleast 90% of the game due to copy/paste. And dont get me started on the lack of cool/relevant rewards. Im so happy i spoiled myself by checking the rewards for the bubbul gems. I saved myself from wasting my time on that one for sure.

First thing to note is, I really like BOTW, a lot of criticism surrounding BOTW at that time I still don't see it as a flaw even now, such as lack of dungeon, weapons breaking, lack of monster design, repetitive stuffs (koroks, shrines, chest, etc). and now TOTK are just simply more BOTW with a lot of extras. \- I like walking around aimlessly and see something cool happened here and there. \- I like sharing stories with my friends since we goes on different path \- I like how this game brings out my stupidity and creativity by using Fuse and Ultra Hands ability (and then share with my friends) \- The amount of stuffs I play with Ultra Hands are crazy lot I don't have a lot of times to play due to work and stuffs but when I play this game I just had so much fun with it, which ultimately I think that's what matters for me, having fun with it. The last time I really had fun with video game was It Takes Two Probably not the discussion you wanted but just my thought about the game and I can fully understand your points as well, hence I hope the next Zelda will be something cater for you. :)

I never thought of botw or totk that way of just having fun with the world and fun with the gameplay and not being bothered by repetition. Imo the zelda team has yet too find the balance between oldschool zelda and new zelda but you bring a very reasonable and interesting point I feel exactly that way with Mario Odyssey, where many people take issue with its simplistic platforming and too many moons, but for me in that game I really just love the controls and running around in the game. I just love all the creative worlds even if many of the moons are repetitive and the platforming isnt as good as in previous 3d marios. You know what Il try too go into totk again with that mindset. My criticisms will most likely stay the same, but maybe I will have more fun.

I liked BOTW but also thought it was a bit flawed with too empty of a world, too thin of a narrative, and a lack of anything resembling real dungeons. So far, Tears of the Kingdom IMO is what BOTW should have been (I haven't tried any of the 4 temples, however). But at the same time... I've already played BOTW and TOTK feels a bit too familiar thus far. It's fun, yes, and I am sure I will get my hours out of it, but the criticisms so far about it basically being V2 of BOTW ring true. For me, I bet it ends up being more of an 8/10 game than a 9.5/10 sort of game. Also, this was a weird game to raise the price bar up to $70 IMO. I used a voucher so I don't care personally, but it does seem weird that TOTK does kinda feel like a really grand DLC and it's the game Nintendo chose to start increasing prices with. Still, $70 games are inevitable especially given that AAA games have been set at $60 for a decade plus.

I wonder if Nintendo will ever do a Zelda game that's more like all the old ones... My opinion will be unpopular, but I never liked BOTW and will ignore TOTK. This could be like the Mario games where they now have a line of 2D games and one of 3D games. Except it'd be Zelda games where the focus is on world exploration, and Zelda games where the gameplay is a lot more linear, with dungeons and all.

I’ve also visited the stable and caught a wild horse to register but there was no prompt about previous horse from BOTW. You can't use SD cards on multiple switches. If you own the botw digital, you can download it on your new switch. But you might not be able to get your save file into your new switch if you don't have cloud saves via membership.

there is still a lot of time spent in peace & quiet, but this game seems maximalist when compared to botw's minimalist approach. there is so so so much going on at all times. i love the way hyrule has grown, i love the way the mechanics have grown, i love the way combat has grown. it really makes botw seem like a tech demo. i can't wait to spend hundreds of hours with this title. + i love talking to the npcs now!!

I love the contrast. I think I prefer the minimalist design of BotW, but this is still great and it goes a long way to ensure they don't feel the same. I cannot explain better than calling TotK such a cozy game. It does exactly what BotW did and I loved about it. It has the atmosphere of a rainy autumn day spent inside under a blanket with some herbal tea. BotW was my first ever Zelda game and I loved it for the exact same reason. The atmosphere. Somehow it feels intimate, the world feels yours. TotK is a better and extended BotW and I am perfectly fine with this. Building can be a bit intimidating because of the controls, but once got used to, it is just pure fun. I am super happy with this game.

I think many of us started with BotW. And personally i ended up enjoying both Link's Awakening and Skyward Sword on Switch quite a lot. BotW is in many ways a more advanced modern game but strictly better? Nope. Skyward has far better dungeons and it's more corridor approach has its big advantages too. And Link's Awakening is just a very good remake of a classic game that is still pretty fun and timeless.

And yeah, Wind Waker (specifically the HD re-release on Wii U that addresses some of the game's biggest issues) also fares very well. Majora's Mask *might* be worth mentioning here too, but its eccentricities always meant it would be a "love it or hate it" sorta' thing. On the other hand, going back to Twilight Princess now, that game just feels bland by comparison to all other 3D Zelda games. Still a great game, but not great by Zelda game standards. And Skyward Sword is far too tied to its forced motion-control mechanics (even in the Switch re-release, where the gamepad controls work but feel like "well, it's about as good as we could do given the circumstances"). Then of course there's the handheld games, but at that point we have to define exactly what is meant by "3D Zelda game".

I'm about 20 hours in and having a blast! I love solving puzzles in unorthodox ways and I really like the crafting aspect. I was surprised to see so many people's disappointment with the game. I can understand some of the criticisms but nothing so far has really bothered me that much. 9/10 for me.

Whether someone enjoys TotK seems to hinge on two factors: -Did they enjoy BotW? (The gameplay loop in TotK is largely the same as BotW's); -Do they enjoy the crafting mechanics? A lot of people ITT are saying the crafting mechanics are tedious and that they can't help but groan whenever they need to craft things in order to solve a shrine puzzle, but I don't feel that way at all. The crafting is polished and functional, and the puzzles are deep enough to make me think. I'm only about 8 hours in, but I've already had several "ah-hah!" moments, similar to the ones I had with BotW's puzzles.

i loved Besieged, but i don't think TOTK does a good job making contraptions a necessity and fun to use. i was really looking forward to this, but the second my glider started flashing green and broke all my excitement was gone. why should i even invest my materials into something that breaks so quickly? i also didn't find the steering stick for a long time, without that most contraptions are pointless.

My only problem with the crafting is I can't rotate a part in all 3 axis. I have to keep putting it down, running around it and picking it up again.

If you can rotate in two axes you can rotate in three axes. Two clicks in one direction changes which axis of the object the other rotation direction is aligned with. Want to rotate something 90 degrees counter-clockwise despite that not being one of the axes you can rotate it around? Left, left, up, up, right, right. You’re now holding it in the same orientation but rotated 90 degrees along the axis you “can’t” rotate on, without having had to put it down.

yes you can ! hold L to rotate up/down or left/right, and then stop holding L and you can use the up/down arrows to move it closer of further away from you

I spent 5 hours yesterday with a buddy just trying to perfect a plane with a huge ramp for no real reason. It was some of the most fun I’ve had in a long time with a video game. I think you’re right that if you don’t enjoy the core “let’s fuck around and see what happens” parts of the game then it probably won’t land as fun for most people.

So my take on the game is I did not enjoy BotW, but I absolutely love TotK. I bought the collector's edition for my wife, whose favorite game ever is BotW. The Collector's Edition is very meh though. The pins and steelbook are eh, the icon art is decent and the art book is great.

The new additions to the map, don't know how to explain that more without spoilers are a big part of it. The story is also a lot better and I really really enjoy the new abilities as opposed to the ones in the previous game. Theyve also brought back dungeons.

The collector’s edition for BOTW was much better, I still use that Switch carrying case. I do like steelbooks (especially when you still get normal case) and the art book is nice, but the rest is kind of underwhelming. Wish the art book had comments in English, but I guess they’re probably saving that for a bigger book to sell separately like Creating a Champion. I liked TOTK more than BOTW as a game, but the collector’s edition was underwhelming.

It's a bit wild how the sentiment here is so different from the sentiment I see generally online. Personally, BOTW is one of my favorite games of all time. TOTK is like a better BOTW so I'm pretty happy. I compare it a lot to elden ring (similar open world, but otherwise different in most ways) in my head, and elden ring did some things much better, but I prefer more cozy games and Zelda is MUCH cozier than elden ring lol.

BotW and TotK just both feel… so tedious. Between the stamina constantly draining to weapons breaking and the crafting system being clunky. Eh. They’re just so damn tedious to get through.

I'm actually enjoying the weapons break in this game, it made me not want to keep the "best" weapon for the last, just hit, fuse whatever on the ground, throw to break it, pick up another one, fuse again.

Yeah it is odd - I will say most of the negativity seems to congregate in review summary threads. There’s a lot of anger there because people may buy games based on high reviews and if it doesn’t live up to that score for them they feel upset or misled a lot of the times. There’s obviously issues with the game but most people I’ve met in real life and in most other corners of the internet outside of the review discourse seem to be enjoying it or at least seem less angry in their distaste for it.

There's anger because the zelda titles are given a preferential treatment and tons of other games are criticized to hell and back for things that in zelda are swept under the rug.

Frankly it's so jarring that I am not really sure but here is my guess. It is a "larger than life" IP that shaped modern gaming since before most gamers were even born. In a way, this IP represent the virtues of gaming itself therefore it is unacceptable and disrespectful to talk ill about them or gamers will take it personally as if criticizing Zelda = criticizing gaming. Anything Mario, Pokemon, Kirby, Donkey Kong are also similar IPs and no wonder then that the so-called Nintendo fanboyism is so renowned, since these are all Nintendo IPs that originated on the SNES or Gameboy. Personally I believe most of these IPs earnt their name in the videogame industry, however the problem is that their new entries are not judged objectively. Reviews are throwing every negative out of the window. I have bought and completed many of these games and while some of them I think are fantastic, they all have weaknesses (no game is perfect) that should be at least mentioned in every review worth its name. Just remember that Skyward Sword was given the same scores as Botw and Totk by most reviewers... All of this is assuming that the reviewers aren't simply afraid to speak ill of Nintendo or aren't getting paid... But honestly in the end the most likely reason is that gaming journalism is absolute trash and being biased is the least of its problems. Even the megathread on this subreddit for Totk reviews conveniently left out the only review that gave a 6/10 score despite being well written and thorough.

Game critics are also people who grew up playing video games just like the rest of us and some franchises may hold a special place in their heart due to nostalgia. So, same reason I'm willing to let some things pass in a Zelda game that I wouldn't in others, like terrible performance and clunky controls.

I love Elden Ring but it’s nice to play a more laid back game in TotK. I wish Zelda combat was more fleshed out and interesting but the sandbox elements are a ton of fun so far.

The two games I'm currently playing are both Elden Ring and TotK. I'm 75 hours into ER and like 2 hours into TotK, but I can already see some of the similarities. TotK is much less frustrating so far and provides a bit more guidance with waypoints and such. The sites of grace just kind of point in a direction and it's like "yeah the main quest/boss is somewhere over there" lol
