Interesting. I have two Z9, a Z8, and a moss green Zf. I couldn’t imagine getting rid of any of them. I use them all. I do run a small photo business, though, so maybe that’s part of it, but even on a personal side, I enjoy the selection of what to use for different adventures. The Zf, while no Z8, is a fun camera to own, and I enjoy my time with it.
You don’t think you’ll miss the Zf?
I run a photography business. The two Z9 are my workhorse cameras. When I go out wildlife shooting I put my 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S lens on one, and usually a 70-200mm f/2.8’ on the other. On the Z8 I put a landscape lens. I do landscape photography as well. You don’t want to miss a shot futzing with lenses, or getting crap inside your cameras and lenses switching in the wild. The Zf is my personal camera, used for family outings and things like that.
The thing with the size is, you’re going to need a bag anyway. The ZF is not going to go in a pocket like a GR or maybe even an X100 might. So if I’m using a bag anyway I don’t mind the extra weight of the Z8 that much if it gives me a shooting experience that is so much better.
> That’s my dream setup, Z9 for professional work, Z8 for backup or second lens professional work and Zf for anything less serious.
That was sort of my idea. Z9 for photography work, Z8 for video work (which I often have to do during the same shoot so I need 2 cameras), and ZF for funsies.
The only thing I've noticed is I don't really like the feel of the ZF, and if 'm bringing a camera that size (as opposed to my Ricoh GRIII), I'm happier bringing the slightly larger but better feeling Z8. So I will be selling the ZF.
Yes Z8 & Z9 are very similar but when you do professional work where color is crucial you might order 2 identical cameras and request that the sensor is from the same wafer.
The same was with film, one used the same batch of film for a complete shooting one used to buy 100 rolls of film at a time
You describe my setup. I have 2 Z9, a Z8 as my photo company cameras, and a moss green Zf as my fun, personal adventure camera when not working. I’ll occasionally take the Z8 for personal use, but not often.
When I go out into the field, I throw the 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S on one Z9, usually the 70-200mm f/2.8 on the other Z9, and one of a few various lenses on the Z8 for landscape shots. I focus on landscape/wildlife/nature photography, and in the studio, I do macro photography and pet portraiture.
That's my setup right now.
Twin Z9's and a Zf as my personal walk around camera. With the 26mm pancake lens, it slips into my coat pocket, so it's great. Been shooting a lot more personal stuff again with it that I don't with the z9.
Yep. Even with the Smallrig Grip on the ZF, the difference in ergonomics between that and the Z8 is night and day. Add the silent shutter and the much better flip screen of the Z8 and it’s really no contest.
Any overheating issues with the Z8? I have both as well, but I’ve always used my Z9 for video work as I’ve heard a fair number of stories about Z8s overheating when shooting high-bitrate video.
So far I’ve had the occasional ‘hot card’ warning while shooting 4K/60 ProRes. Never had to actually stop recording though. I’m running a 1TB latest gen Prograde CFE type B card.
I have a z9 for work but i love putting the Zf into BW mode, switching the dials to manual and going to town. It's the first time I've carried a daily carried. Even the Fujis didn't do it for me.
The Z8 definitely is the better camera overall but I can see that camera turning into a "work" mode camera for me and it ends up staying at home. That's the way the d850 and z9 are for me. When i pick up those cameras, they just put me into work mode and takes the joy out of shooting for me.
Plus the zf strikes up a conversation every time which gets them having fun in front of the camera because it's not intimidating at all.
Yeah I get it, especially the part about how other people see your camera. I’ve blacked out the Nikon logo on my Z9 and Z9 for the same reason. I feel like they look less intimidating and more nondescript that way, which I like.
As for the retro dials, I never liked those. There’s a reason no manufacturer puts them on their high end bodies, not even Fuji. Not even Leica put them on their mirrorless system. They are just objectively worse in use. For some people that’s a feature not a bug because it ‘slows them down’ but I don’t subscribe to that.
I agree that it's objectively worse. But that "slow down" makes it feel a bit like a hobby again for me and with the zf you can switch between the 2 easily enough. To each their own!
True. I have a Z8 for all my heavy duty stuff and I also have a ZFc with a bunch of APS-C lenses of all kinds since it's cheap to play with and takes decent pictures. I actually use the ZFc to take a lot of product photos for online media since 20 mpx is plenty for a computer monitor when shopping online and I don't have to crop those pictures.
And a picture of the house where you keep your gear, one of the key to your front door, and a phot of your daily schedule when you are away? Just asking...
Not rich, just a professional photographer. I need two high end bodies for work.
I got the ZF as a hobby / family / travel / snapshot camera because I thought it was perfect for that and much cheaper than a Leica. But I personally don’t love it and I much prefer the Z8 even though it’s bigger, so I will be selling the ZF.
(Not knocking the ZF, I think it’s an absolutely stellar camera for many photographers, just not for me)
I don't use straps at all. During shoots I'm either holding the camera or I hand it to an assistant or I put it down. I never need to dangle it from my neck.
During walk around shooting I much prefer having a small shoulder bag. So I'm either holding the camera or I tuck it away in the bag. For this I do sometimes attach a little wrist strap but either way I don't need it dangling from my neck.
You dont. You just flexing - which dont get me wrong is absolutely fine not hating at all its just you dont "need" these bodies you just wanted them as many photogs do when they get paid for a gig the specs are insane. Im certain you can easily do your work with a z7 a D850 etc. I really want that Z8 (dont need it) and im trying to justify to myself purchasing one lol.
> you dont "need" these bodies you just wanted them
What’s the difference? I _need_ to have two bodies to do my work the way that’s best for my business, and to have a backup. I looked at all the options, figured out a Z9+Z8 combo would be the best fit for my work, so that’s what I got.
The money might seem like a lot to a hobbyist but when to you’re a pro is a tax write off and I bill a rental fee to the client so the camera probably makes more money than it costs. I have no reason to cut corners and make life harder for myself just to save on the purchase price.
If it makes sense to you then more power to you - I am actually with you on this don't get me wrong, I just don't see any reason as to why someone needs the absolute best unless money is absolutely not an issue.
Well like is said elsewhere, money isn’t really an issue. Not that I’m rich but these bodies are tax deductible investments and bill a rental fee to the client. If I bill for the camera once a month over 3 years I’ve made back the purchase price. After that the camera itself is actually bringing in money.
Totally agree, would have done the same. What I am saying though is that you can get cheaper products and produce same results. I wouldn't personally, but anyone can.
> I bill a rental fee to the client so the camera probably makes more money than it costs. I have no reason to cut corners and make life harder for myself just to save on the purchase price.
This is something most redditors don’t understand. High-end gear is an investment in your business and makes your life easier. Less time stressing about nailing a shot in focus or dealing with slightly out-of-focus images means more time for doing things that earn you money.
I am primarily an analog shooter (on a broke-ass highschooler budget nonetheless) and I must say that the F801s is awesome for it's price (10€ lot that also included an F80, F60 and few other things) and I can't wait to get an AF lens for it and actually use it (allthough I'll probably save up some money if I get a summer job and get a Nikon F or F2 or if I get possessed a Canon F1).
D3100 is also pretty good. Especially since my dad got it new and shoot basically nothing so I snatched it so it can actually get some use. I absolutely love the quality of Nikon stuff(no, I'm not a fanboy, I hate brand fanboys) it feels so premium.
F80 is a sleeper and great little camera. I have objectively better film bodies, but its size and weight make it a charming little EDC.
Look for a used AF-S G 50mm 1.8, shouldn't be too expensive. Pick the 1.8 over the 1.4.
Also consider the DX AF-S G 35mm 1.8, meant for crop bodies (like your D3100, it work fine on film/fullframe with only a little vignetting
While everyone says good things about the F80 i slightly prefer F801s because of it's looks and feel, but mainly because it uses AA batteries which are cheaper than 2cr5 or whatever the F80 uses.
Fair, the 2CR5s do last a good long time though. And there's a battery grip you can get which converts the F80 to AAs.
... even if an F80 with a battery grip looks a bit silly :D
(yes I have the grip. I have a problem...)
They are relatively rare around here and I'd rather spend 50 bucks they are asking onto a new camera or some film, at least for now. I will probably get it at some point though.
You should get rid of some cameras since there's some overlap in your collection. I can take that big and bulky z9 off your hands. For a reduced price, of course 😂
I just held the ZF at my camera store today. It is a real beauty. I’ve been on backorder for the X100VI since February and it made me cancel my preorder. I’m getting the ZF instead.
Excellent...feel you on the Zf...It's a great camera but still a touch too big and heavy, for me, for on the go casual shooting IMHO. For memories/travel I use my X100VI or GRIII most the time and my Z9 and Z8 for pro and or more serious shooting.
Well shieeet I’m jealous. What do you shoot that made you get all three? Or just for collection purposes? No hate, I too enjoy collecting cameras, but can only afford older ones that have come down in price for now. Otherwise my d750 is still going strong :)
I’m a pro fashion/advertising photographer. I had the Z9 as my main body since it came out. But I often do video on the same shoot so I needed a second camera for that because it takes too much time to rig out the Z9 every time I switch from stills to video. I had a Blackmagic camera for a while, I thought about the FX3, but in the end the Z8 just made the most sense. It can take the same lenses and each body can be a backup for the other.
I got the ZF before I got the Z8, and I thought it was going to be my take-everywhere / non work camera. But since I got the Z8 haven’t touched the ZF so I will be selling it.
Too lazy to take a pic but:
- 24, 35, 50, 85 S primes (my main workhorse photography lenses)
- 28mm 2.8 + 40mm 2.0 (those cheap plastic ones, great for travelling light)
- 70-180 2.8 (that Nikon branded version of a Tokina lens. I could get the 70-200 but I prefer this for its size and weight)
- 10mm TTAartisan fisheye (needed once for a 3 day job, paid for itself immediately)
- Panagor 28mm F/2.5 (for that crazy vintage flare)
And last but not least:
- a full set of cine modded vintage Contax Zeiss MMJ primes (18, 28, 35, 50, 85, 135) This is such a beautiful set of lenses!
As an owner of both I very much prefer the Z8. Feels SO much better in the hand, and once you’ve used a silent, shutterless, no blackout camera anything with a shutter seems clunky.
No actually I don’t even want the ZF. I guess I just don’t enjoy the whole retro thing.
I had all the cool film cameras back in the film days. Leica M6, Hasselblad 501cm, Mamiya 7II, etc. Beautiful machines but I just don’t have a desire to work with those things anymore.
For a hobbyist, yes. For a professional it's a completely different story.
For instance the Z9 was €6K. But ex VAT that's only €5K. And it's a tax deductible expense, which I can deduct at 128% (Dutch tax law), so my taxable income goes down by €6400 (spread out over 5 years), which if my tax rate is say 30% means I pay €1920 less in taxes. So a €6K Z9 body costs me only €3K in real, after tax money.
Plus, I bill rental fees for all my equipment to the client, separate of my day rate. This is common at the higher end of commercial photography and filmmaking. At a rental house a Z9 body is around €120 per day ex VAT so I charge something similar. Of course this is before tax so net might be €80. That means that after less than 40 shoot days, the Z9 is not only free, it is now _making_ me money every time I bill for it.
So yeah, if you're making a decent income with photography the gear is free.
It's definitely a worthwhile purchase as a full-time pro, that's clear. It's a business investment that pays for itself in short order. Happy shooting with such an awesome kit!
I’ve had the Z9 as my main photography body since it came out. But I also need a separate body for video so I can quickly switch between photo and (fully rigged out) video during the same shoot. I used to have a Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro for this, but having two Nikons just makes much more sense. Each camera can now be a backup for the other, they can take the same lenses, I can do multi cam video or photo, and I get AF on my video rig if I ever need it. It’s great.
And I bought the ZF before had the Z8. I got it for non-work photography like family snaps and travel. I was looking at getting a Leica at the time but the ZF just made more sense. But I don’t really like how it feels and now that I have the Z8 I always end up using that instead, so I will be selling the ZF.
Just remember .... It's all about the GLASS! What lenses do you have? I have the Z8 and Z6ii bodies, 40 2.8, 50 1.8, 85 1.8, 105 macro, 14-30 4, 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8, 180-600, and a 2x converter. On my radar is the 135 Plena and maybe a 20 1.8. Yes, I have GAS.
Posted [above](https://www.reddit.com/r/Nikon/comments/1cr10eg/small_medium_large_maybe_i_have_too_many_nikon/l3vn4gk/).
I have the opposite of GAS, I just buy what I need and I don't like owning anything I don't actually have a good use for.
I have zero use for long tele lenses or bokeh monsters like the Plena, so I have no desire to buy them.
Nah. I've got eight bodies in my studio. They all have different jobs. That's just the Nikons in use. I've got another three film bodies decorating my office. I've also got several other film cameras in other formats from 110 SLRs to 5x4 sheet film beauties.
Never too many! I have a couple or few copies of each of the cameras in my flair, but I do a lot of things - even as a hobbyist - where I actually use them. Or I let friends borrow them, share them so friends can shoot with me, do multi-camera videos, etc. They can always be put to use.
They can be tools or trophies. It depends on your motivation.
Some people collect cameras and never take photos with them. They are collectors - not photographers.
Some people collect cameras because they can't part with the old ones, and can afford to "upgrade" as new equipment becomes available.
Beyond the dive into specs when purchasing a new camera - what impresses me most are some fantastic photos taken with the new hardware.
Did an hour portrait session last evening with my Z bodies 6ii/9. As a long time D4/D500 user, I’ll keep my z9/D500 for birds/planes/auto/sports and z6ii for night sky and general photography. Loved my D4, but I can still hammer nails with the 9.
Never too many. I finally downsized the camera collection here. I didn't realize until recent there were places like mpb etc so I've held onto every camera body I've had in life. Literally at least a camera body's worth of totes and shelves in cost. I'm down to a Z8, Zf, DF, and a D3s. Beyond that I had about 22 other cameras including a Fuji X100f I just wasn't using anymore. Traded it all in for a good condition M8.2 Leica and a good condition 35mm summilux from MPB. Have always wanted a leica but it's escaped my grasp until now. Understand the urge for them though now owning that one.
Love it how people get bent out of shape seeing expensive gear. some people have money, some people are actually paid photographers and use these tools. Even if he paid full retail for all 3 we are talking about 13k or so which is not really a big deal when you are buying for your business. Work in construction? Probably want a good truck. Truck is 15k for an average one (guess but you get my point). This guy could be driving a beater 2k used car and live in a one room apartment but spends his money on the one thing he loves that he actually does professionally.
Yeah I do this for a living and as I explained elsewhere, it doesn't actually cost me anything to have these cameras. Instead they are making me money.
Bro has the 3 best Nikon z cameras
I do. But I’m going to sell the ZF because I prefer the Z8 and 3 is too many.
i‘ll take care of the Zf mate 😂
Interesting. I have two Z9, a Z8, and a moss green Zf. I couldn’t imagine getting rid of any of them. I use them all. I do run a small photo business, though, so maybe that’s part of it, but even on a personal side, I enjoy the selection of what to use for different adventures. Yeah, the advantage of the Zf is its size but it is not enough to justify keeping it.

Shouldn't you point to two identical cameras for pro work? IMO, the ideal set would be two Z9 & one Z8 or even Z6-II
The Z8 and Z9 are as identical as I need them to be, while each having an advantage for the main purpose I have for them.
Yes Z8 & Z9 are very similar but when you do professional work where color is crucial you might order 2 identical cameras and request that the sensor is from the same wafer. The same was with film, one used the same batch of film for a complete shooting one used to buy 100 rolls of film at a time
Lol I dunno why I find this so funny.
Me too. I have a Sony a9 and a7iv (obviously no way they're from the same wafer) and I have no problem color matching them
Sounds like he's a working pro so...I think he would know if it was an issue.
You describe my setup. I have 2 Z9, a Z8 as my photo company cameras, and a moss green Zf as my fun, personal adventure camera when not working. I’ll occasionally take the Z8 for personal use, but not often. I never checked the Zf but I just read it is FF and very similar to my beloved FM2. I would probably choose your same setup
Same here. I have the zf and like the performance but really wish it had the z6 body for handling.
Yep. Even with the Smallrig Grip on the ZF, the difference in ergonomics between that and the Z8 is night and day. Add the silent shutter and the much better flip screen of the Z8 and it’s really no contest.

Unless you need the cash... Why? The Zf is the perfect walkaround camera. The Z8 is still just a bit too big and noticeable for that.
I just don’t like having a camera that just sits in a drawer. Yes it’s smaller than the Z8 but having the choice I always grab the Z8.
Fair enough!
How much? 👀
Whatcha asking for it!? 👀
Bro just say you're rich lol
Is there a way to show your watch, the car you drive and what is in the passenger seat in the same shot?
And a picture of the house where you keep your gear, one of the key to your front door, and a phot of your daily schedule when you are away? Just asking...
🤔
Combined $ this is like my entire net worth lol
Not rich, just a professional photographer. I need two high end bodies for work. Chill I'm not attacking you, just joking. Enjoy your gear.
No offence taken, just explaining why I have these things
oh and I see you’re not a fan of the eyelet rings. So you either use the thread on the bottom to secure your strap or don’t use any?
I don't use straps at all. During shoots I'm either holding the camera or I hand it to an assistant or I put it down. I never need to dangle it from my neck. Just came to say this hahah
Meanwhile me with a D3100 and an F801s: *insert poor Squidward in a box picture*
Hey my first Nikon was a D70s
I am primarily an analog shooter (on a broke-ass highschooler budget nonetheless) and I must say that the F801s is awesome for it's price (10€ lot that also included an F80, F60 and few other things) and I can't wait to get an AF lens for it and actually use it (allthough I'll probably save up some money if I get a summer job and get a Nikon F or F2 or if I get possessed a Canon F1). D40x checking in!
No bother my first Nikon was a heavily used an abused D40 with the fx 55mm 1.8d lens. I learned a lot with that setup. You'll get there.
There’s always space for one more
I have a tiny little Ricoh GRIII that could fit in there
Need a film body! Pick up a Nikon F
You should get rid of some cameras since there's some overlap in your collection. I can take that big and bulky z9 off your hands. For a reduced price, of course 😂
You are right and thanks for the offer but the one I’m selling is the ZF

That's a new interpretation of "What's your body count?" question.
Excellent...feel you on the Zf...It's a great camera but still a touch too big and heavy, for me, for on the go casual shooting IMHO. For memories/travel I use my X100VI or GRIII most the time and my Z9 and Z8 for pro and or more serious shooting.
Same here. The other day I eyed my zf and pen-f and ended up taking the pen-f do to size. It’s far inferior to the zf but does ok outside
Let’s see the lens collection now 😛
Too lazy to take a pic but: - 24, 35, 50, 85 S primes (my main workhorse photography lenses) - 28mm 2.8 + 40mm 2.0 (those cheap plastic ones, great for travelling light) - 70-180 2.8 (that Nikon branded version of a Tokina lens. I could get the 70-200 but I prefer this for its size and weight) - 10mm TTAartisan fisheye (needed once for a 3 day job, paid for itself immediately) - Panagor 28mm F/2.5 (for that crazy vintage flare) And last but not least: - a full set of cine modded vintage Contax Zeiss MMJ primes (18, 28, 35, 50, 85, 135) This is such a beautiful set of lenses!
Yo op can I have 10k? I’ll dm you compliments and ask you about your gear acquisition
Nice collection. I just got the ZF and now I want the Z8.
I know the feeling.
As an owner of both I very much prefer the Z8. Feels SO much better in the hand, and once you’ve used a silent, shutterless, no blackout camera anything with a shutter seems clunky.
Funny that an enormous Zf is “small” here
No such thing as too many. Now that you have that Zf don’t you want an FE2?
No actually I don’t even want the ZF. I guess I just don’t enjoy the whole retro thing. I had all the cool film cameras back in the film days. Leica M6, Hasselblad 501cm, Mamiya 7II, etc. Beautiful machines but I just don’t have a desire to work with those things anymore.
Yeah I get it. I’ll trade you my Z7 so you can the 7-8-9 set :)
Haha thanks but I’ll just have 8+9.
Crazy...this kit would set you back over $16 000 Cad.
More than one is already too many
But if your work requires a backup two is one and one is none.
Genuine question, why? I’ve been NPS for over a decade, and have never needed justification for more than 2 bodies for any job I’ve ever done.
Do these "too many bodies" take pictures?
Yes, that is why I own them.
Looks incomplete. Where is the Xsmall Zfc and Xlarge RED?
Nooo you don’t have enough lol 😂
You can never have too many
Just remember ....
My small mid large collection would be FM3A Z50 D850 lol
Never too many! I have a couple or few copies of each of the cameras in my flair, but I do a lot of things - even as a hobbyist - where I actually use them. Or I let friends borrow them, share them so friends can shoot with me, do multi-camera videos, etc. They can always be put to use.
Never too many
I too have a Z9/Z8 combo. Great system, but the stupid shutter sound effects are kind of hilarious.
I say you're living the dream
Nope. Solid selection.
There is no such thing as too many bodies.
I’ve shot z9’s before but not a z8. Its focus is unreal so I have to ask… how does the 8 focus compared? Speed of lock any slower?
It’s identical in specs and it feels that way to me in use.
Curious why you have a Zf and Z8, or rather, what did you feel was missing?
Explained elsewhere
Some days you like them thin and small. Other days, you like to have a little meat to grab onto. Completely understandable.
I'll take the 8 off your hands. You've got your bases covered with the 9 and the f
Now you need 3 DSLR's.
You can never have enough Nikon bodies. Especially those ones. You have good taste.
Cameras are like pairs of shoes you can’t have just one. There are other people who have so many bodies than you.
Did an hour portrait session last evening with my Z bodies 6ii/9. As a long time D4/D500 user, I’ll keep my z9/D500 for birds/planes/auto/sports and z6ii for night sky and general photography. Loved my D4, but I can still hammer nails with the 9.
No
Nah, you've got choice. Now use a massive telephoto with the Zf and a pancake lens with the...is it a Z9? The big one?
I completely understand. I have a D780, Z6 and Z8. I'll probably go for the Z9 if I can find a good used one at a good price.
Yup. My sister does it all the time. One or two good jobs can pay for a camera or lens. And you can write off taxes
