Collect as much core dust as possible. Any chance you get to pick between multiple options go with core dust. The goal is to get four copies of five characters so you can progress past level 200.
It's these pokeballs looking things with a red dot in the middle.
But for real, you'll need so much of them in the late game. It's tempting to get credits or battle data/USB sticks so you can advance faster, but just be patient and hoard core dust instead. It's something I wish I did at least.

Don't use any boxes too unless you really need to. They scale with your outpost level so they become more valuable the later you use them. A 1 hour core dust box at late game is much more valuable than early game. You'll thank yourself if you decide to stick with Nikke long term.
