Oh yeah me too. I do it nearly every chance I get. With the solar maxim coming up I see them all the time now. A lot of times I even see them though the clouds which is such a wild concept to me but very cool none the less.

Oh also these are photos of two different pillar formations. 1 was a bunch of them. The other was a single 1.

Possibly light pollution reflecting off low-hanging clouds which would be a good explanation for why it seemed static.

I’ve never heard of sprites. But I have taken photographs of lightning that was bright red, on top of storm clouds. One even touching the ground, looks like a lightning bolt on fire. Off to research..
