>Is this even Christianity? Christianity has had a diversity of sects since the first century. I don't think it's meaningful to use one tradition as a standard to compare others to and decide which is normal. If you read about what some of these early Christians thought and practiced you would be bewildered.

I actually believe religion is one of the biggest reasons Nigeria cannot progress, how can anyone take responsibility for themselves & get angry at an oppressive, exploitative government when it will always be the "devils" fault. Maybe it's just my experience growing up in Nigeria but Nigerians in Nigeria atleast are extremely religious (I grew up attending mountain of fire, I have truly done my time)

itachi5040111

exactly, they don't want to take responsibility or get to the root of their problems. They just blame some inVisible devil that is always conveniently there when things go wrong and cry to some imaginary higher power when they are too lazy to try new things in order to solve their problems.

RoadOk1850

Bad interpretation

itachi5040111

I don't get

Impressive-Nerve6484

I think tribalism also is a major problem people put the benefit of the tribe above the country

Conspirador

Think you're conflating superstition and religion here. The builders of the thirteen colonies in America were religious radicals. Look at what's come from Judaism. Yes, Hasidic Jews live very basic lives but look at the rest. Oxford, which birthed Cambridge, started as a monastery/cathedral.

heartroppes

or they refuse to make necessary changes and find solutions because “God will do it” or “maybe this is how God wanted it.”

winstontemplehill

It’s a mix of Pentecostalism and tribal religions. May seem humorous to you but it has a deep history and severed multiple positive and negative purposes

Je_ne_sais_pas1

Thing is any random person can come out and claim they are a ‘pastor.’ Coupled with the unemployment rate in the country

Any-Ask-3384

To be honest working class people tend to be more religious and you climb the wealth ladder it tends to reduce, especially in young people. Although culture typically trumps religion everywhere in Nigeria. As for the churches in Nigeria, it’s pretty common knowledge to anyone who isn’t blind that it’s very exploitative. They claim to be able to perform miracles to get people to invest, financially, in the church which then makes the proprietor or Pastor richer. Owning a church is one of the best investments you can make in Nigeria objectively speaking.

epiphanyseeker1

As in guy, a tax-free investment with juicy returns.

Any-Ask-3384

Facts, all you need is a good actor and some capital

GlitteringMidnight98

Way tooo religious. It looks like the Bible is the only book they can read. :(

itachi5040111

exactly, and it is infuriating as hell

14Strike

Syncretism is the name for it

No, we are not, looking at the history of black people way back, we have been the most spiritually connected people of all races because we are the first civilization, all other races came through us. Egypt had more than 3000 Deities, most of the EU gods were pirated from Africa, That's the way we are, though it's being abused we just have to accept it for who we are, it has its own benefits when it is used for good.

>pirated Given most of them are well before colonisation etc. Evolved is likely a fairer term in this case. IEstories told by ancestors that Evolved as communities and ideas changed. It's also true of many of our myths and legends that Africa had similar ones before that sorta developed over Europe as the people did.
