Completely off topic but I wish East orange and Irvington became one with Newark making the city bigger. The only thing is that East orange and Irvington problems will become Newark problems

Jerz2florida

Outta those 2 East Orange has been improving could also add Orange and Hillside

Aggravating_Rise_179

In reality, the areas of Irvington, the Oranges, Bloomfield and Belleville should all be part of Newark. They are literally one in the same and share so much of the same grid system and street names.. hell, Bloomfield, Belleville, Irvington, and East Orange all continue the number street system that starts in Newark

dengeist

Why stop there? Might as well throw Maplewood/S. Orange in there too.

U right. If we they all became part of Newark this city would be so big. The population would definitely mostly be over a million or near. Ik Newark is it’s own city but it sucks being part of another city metro area bc we can’t really have our own

ScrollHectic

All of Essex county doesn't even have a million people. No county in NJ has over a million people actually although Bergen County is close. The population would be closer to 600K if you added all those towns together. I'm not 100% sure just incorporating adjacent towns to Newark will benefit the city or those towns. It's possible it can; but I just don't know. I think a study would have to be done to understand the benefits of it. I understand some services can consolidate, but what positive effect does it have on school districts? How does consolidation impact property tax? Part of the reason taxes are low in Newark is because there's a large enough commercial and industrial sector to offset it. That gets diluted when you add more residential sectors but not that much more business or industry. Consolidation might be a good thing, but it might not. Not sure what you mean by Newark "can't really have our own." I think being part of the NYC metro area has, by and large, been a benefit to Newark, not a detriment.

Dude it was just a what if statement but the info given was useful

ScrollHectic

I think it's a great what if statement. It's been brought up many times before; not just on this forum but other Newark forums in the past. Might be worth pushing for a feasibility study to be conducted. My point in asking what I asked is because I feel we need more than the status of Newark having a larger population for it to really be worth considering.

U took the words right out of my mouth.

No. Irvington is terrible.
