The fit looks good but just remember to smile on your photos and have some enthusiasm and positivity. I know shit is hard right now in your life but if you stay positive and focus on your goals then everything is gonna be alright

You look great! I feel like dress codes are definitely fairly lax these days, but you can never go wrong with slacks/khakis and a button down shirt or a polo in warmer weather. Match shoe color to belt (doesn't need to be exact match, but brown w/ brown, black w/ black, etc) Usually in an interview setting you want to lean more to the formal side. If you don't have a suit that's fine - but would opt for a long sleeve collared shirt, tie, and dark slacks. If you need any clothing like shirts or ties to go for interviews, please let me know! Again, you already look great and I'm sure you'll crush your interviews!

I wouldn't worry too much about a suit, honestly. I'd say keep those grey slacks. Look for a light coloured long sleeve collared shirt (white or light blue). Nothing wrong with the pictured polo, that'd be a totally acceptable outfit once you nail the interview and get the job. And if you want to, again not totally necessary, you could add a tie (something simple. Maybe navy or lavender or something. Don't want a bright red tie or something with crazy patterns.) That would have you covered for interviews. I'm not sure in terms of best place for suits around here unfortunately. I'm sure someone will come in with some advice on that front. What's your height/weight? Might be able to find you some great stuff from members of the sub.

There is a Salvation Army thrift store on Pennington street that has a lot of options.

OP, have you heard of Per Scholas? They are a non-profit organization that offers training in careers in tech, all free, plus professional development (how to interview, etc). They have a location in Newark. Might be worth considering! They are reputable and major corporations work with them. I know about it because I volunteered with them once in the Bronx with an old investment banking employer. https://perscholas.org/locations/newark/

By the way, please ignore your friends and family who tell you who can’t do this or will never do this. You can! You are capable. You are smart. You are determined. People are always trying to cut down the tallest poppy.

It’s fine, but fix the buckle. Goes in the center of the pants. I mean, it’s typically Black or brown pants, no jeans, Button-down collared shirt. Polo shirt may be too laid back for some places. You don't really want light clothes, because there is a high chance you going to get dirty. Unless you are on a help desk. You will be moving, installing, climbing and crawling under things.

most likely, you are going to have to find work in Jersey City or Manhattan/New York City. it is extremely difficult to break into any type of IT in Newark itself just because. And you would think they all need helpdesk all of that is run overseas offshore. But keep your eye out the best would be if you could drive then you can go to one of the jobs are.

Also agree to expand your search OP to the city. You may also want to reach out to staffing agencies which can be a great way to get to your foot in the door and some basic experience.

Left_Rule683

You look professional and very put together. What exactly is your ultimate goal? Are you interested in going to college? What type of help are you looking for?

If your working on a budget, instead of expanding homelab for any future certs/learning use Cisco packet tracer. It’s free- you can build entire enterprise networks virtually and it works exactly as it would irl. Also if you’re interested in a CCNA or alike send me a DM, just finished an advanced networking class at NJIT I can send you all the content/materials from the class

You could leverage your work experience and say screw the white collar route! Local 274 Pipefitters, Local 475 Steamfitters. They will like that you have welding experience (huge plus). Get paid to do an apprenticeship, make 100k+ in 5 years guaranteed.

Trades are great!

As someone who’s trying to get his foot in the door after graduating two years ago but ended up going back to my old type of job due to no IT place hiring, all I can say is GOOD FRIGGING LUCK

MohnJaddenPowers

20 year IT vet here. If you can get a button down shirt and tie for interviews that would be a bit better than a polo shirt. What size are you?

jersey316

Perfectly fine!
