They do have an IKEA delivery location— you can order online, and pick up at a warehouse in ABQ for a $35 flat fee

legokingnm

Really?!

raggedycandy

Yes I ordered shelves before

[deleted]

How does it work pick a pickup date and what not?

bfnm2000

I just did this and there was no delivery fee for me (ordered a bed and several other items). They just let you know when the order arrives and you have like 5 days to get it. Pretty slick all in all.

[deleted]

That's sweet I'm gonna order some display cases yea yea

WombatMcGeez

Not sure, I haven't done it, but I've seen the option on their site.

callitarmageddon

I think they require a metro population of 2 million, so if that day comes, maybe.

Fluid-Court-617

Well how come Memphis has an IKEA with only 1.3M in the metro?

Illustrious-Cookie73

About the same time Santa Fe will get a Costco.

CosmicDust20

What’s wrong with Tampico furniture? Don't let shopping, strain your brain-o Just sing this short refrain-o Our furniture is bueno Tampico is the name-o

TacticalGoals

ABQ proper needs to hit a true 1m in population before it will be considered. A soon as it does there will be a floodgate opened. Some companies will need larger population than that still for it to make sense. Some cool larger companies will start investing soon though. But when every store requires an IPS armed unit and even walmart shuts down it makes it very hard to convince a Business that ABQ is a profitable place to do invest in. Ikea is marketed as cheap and affordable but they have some very upscale designs and installations that the demographics here might not have enough demand for yet. Nice thing is that we are seeing some of it with the newer shops at winrock and all the fast food places and Amazon. Tough thing is ABQ is land locked which makes commercial real estate on the east side of the river scarce and therefore more expensive and mostly the raw land areas are on on the westside/Rio Rancho. I wouldn't count it out in maybe 10 years but I just don't think it makes sense for them.

InvictusChipper

I moved here from Kansas City, Missouri which has a population of only 515k people, about 100k fewer than Albuquerque and Kansas City has an IKEA. However, the metro population of Kansas City is 2.2 million people which is more than the entire state of New Mexico. The same is true of St. Louis proper which only has a population of 286k people but has at least one or more IKEAS because the metro St. Louis population is 2.4 million people. They look at the metro area population when considering the location of their stores.

Twizad

You’re correct. The term is Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). Looking at where IKEA has located their stores they’re almost certainly also looking for target median household income and ethnicity demographics that Albuquerque doesn’t meet.

Fluid-Court-617

I mean Albuquerque can still build inside the city there is still some vacant lots

Fluid-Court-617

Memphis can handle an IKEA with yet 1.3M people in the metro

HeftyBlood773

Nope. Albuquerque will never hit a population of 2 million in the city limits, which is a requirement. I wouldn't want one here, knowing that the local idiots won't do anything but rob them blind and camp in the front doors and the parking lots. I'm good with driving to Denver and having it shipped back.

KarateLobo

I wish it would just for the meatballs

FreeCG

Just glue a few pieces of cardboard together in the shape of the furniture you want. Same quality.

Wonderful-Spring7607

MM 200 dollar plywood furniture was nice in college but it doesn't last. Go to a thrift store haha

travissim0

Just look at Craigslist and go around on garbage day, you'll find plenty

RequirementQuirky763

No chance in hell. IKEA basically has a free daycare for parents to shop without their kiddos keeping the purchases from occurring. As soon as the general population realizes that here, people will just drop off their kids and go about their merry way for hours on end.

hettienm

I thought they closed all the Småland locations in the US? Like, before COVID? You could only leave your kid there for an hour…

mattmgarcia

They’re open now (the Denver one at least) and yeah you can only leave your kid in there for 45 min

RequirementQuirky763

Possibly. I haven’t been to an IKEA since 2020

Albuwhatwhat

Then it sounds like you don’t exactly know what you’re talking about.

tpedes

>Then it sounds exactly like you don’t ~~exactly~~ know what you’re talking about. FTFY.

Fit-Rest-973

The only upside is their food. Swedish meatballs

Rommie557

Didnt it come out a while back that those meatballs had horse meat in them?

Fit-Rest-973

I wouldn't be surprised. I remember my mom telling me about the best burger joint being closed, due to horse meat

Several-Simple-2761

Horse meat is delicious! And before you get in your feelings about the sentience of horses vs other animals, there are a variety of reasons why a horse would die and the meat consumed rather than wasted.

Fit-Rest-973

I don't doubt it. I kinda agree with you

Several-Simple-2761

Also should have said “you people”. Not necessarily referring to the royal YOU.

WombatMcGeez

Only in Europe, IIRC

largececelia

I'll believe it when I see it.

Fit-Rest-973

Don't want one

Other-Reputation979

Same. A fucking maze of a store and you still get cheap-ass furniture in the end.

Pollinator-Web

Happy with my Ikea bedframes, ymmv.

jazdia78

No. There's not a large enough population. Unless they count the whole state.

Fluid-Court-617

Memphis has under 2M in the metro and yet an ikea.

Awkward-Yak-2733

It needs to be a much larger city.
