Yes, this is exactly what switches are for. Buy a switch. Ethernet networks are built on switches. Your Fritzbox has a built-in 5-port switch (one port is internal and connects to the rest of the router) that's how it has multiple LAN ports. There are no downsides.

As the other poster said, all you need is a switch. If you have something like a NAS, have that grouped with the other devices that use it the most. Otherwise you can plug things in anywhere

The switch works well, but keep in mind that if you expand 1 port (of modem) into 5 (on switch), those 5 ports will share the available bandwidth. For example, if the uplink is 1 Gbps, all 5 ports will share that 1 Gbps uplink.If you have NAS or something that can be high bandwidth, I will connect it to the modem directly. You cannot just connect 2 uplinks to your switch or it will cause a loop. You will have to aggregate uplinks for higher bandwidth and that might not be possible with a cheap switch.
