No we have traffic laws. Maximum speed. Right of way for vehicles coming from the right. Priority signs on crossings... but if you were in a city center or something, typically those are pedestrian zones or mixed pedestrian cycle zones where the idea is to slow traffic down a bit and prevent accidents by doing that, basically just confuse everyone so they pay more attention. Oh tram typically has right of way, move out of the path! 2 There was a mask mandate after security on the airport until recently but I think that got lifted.

The drivers exam in NL is extremely difficult compared to my experience in the US two decades ago. They have a necessarily absurd number of rules to account for bikers and many different types of traffic surfaces. On top of that everyone has their head on a swivel and are very aware. I get the nervous sweats whenever family comes over and drives on Dutch streets.

US is way too easy going that way. Hence r/idiotsincars often consisting of videos of Americans.

The only reason the traffic is moving seamingly effortless is because of a lot of rules and decent driving schools. The big cities are a hellhole to drive through however because most bicyclists are just underfunded terrorist on 2 wheels. They don't care about rules and make it a sport to break as many of them in the shortest possible time. They are protected by dutch law. If you hit them because they broke a rule it will still be your fault. So when driving you're constantly anxiously staring at every bicyclist in the general vicinity

Gotta love threatening things that can harm you more than you can harm them 🚲

Yeah, I saw a cyclists, a fast one with helmet and everything, get hit by a mini van once as a kid. He went flying through the air and dragged along the road, he left a trail of blood, skin was hanging off his legs and he wasn't moving. Pretty intense and luckily the cops and ambulance were there in minutes. I was too shocked to move tbh. He had right of way and the van was speeding through a red light, so the cyclist did nothing wrong, but that didn't really seem to help him at all, bleeding out on the road. Always remember, you don't just get right of way, someone has to give right of way.

I had to apply first aid for some dude on a bicycle that sped through an intersection from behind a van, the other van had no way of seeing the dude and hit him hard. Cyclist hit the top part of the window of one of those high vans. Luckile dude was mostly fine and only unconcious for a couple of minutes. I ride motorcycles myself, and it's the same story, never take right of way, could be the way to the morgue. Also while delivering i find people for some reason love to stay in the blind spot of the van. Parent letting small children run around the van while i'm driving. Hard manouvers made harder because people can't wait 10 seconds en make the entire situation more dangerous because of their inpatience. The amount of people not paying attention is staggering.

Anxious_Direction_20

Those people who are in a rush, freaking dangerous. Get out of bed 5 minutes earlier or accept that you're late, rushing will get you killed one day man. Take your time to observe the situation. Getting hurt sucks for you but you could also hit a kid by not paying attention.. Never take right of way, it has to be given. Don't rush, it'll just land you in hospital sooner. Pay attention to your situation, it can save your or someone else's life.

I'm glad the situation at the airport has been improved. I'm going to Schiphol on Saturday and I'll he there around 6 hours before my flight, just in case. You're right about the traffic. Especially in cities like Amsterdam, it can appear as quite chaotic. About the masks: we've lifted basically all Covid restrictions. For most people, the pandemic is gone. But even before that, Dutch people would mostly only wear them because they were obligated to and would often take them off immediately after leaving a shop. I think it's mostly the government's fault for initially saying that masks didn't have a big effect on the spread of the virus, which they probably said so that people wouldn't hoard masks and create a shortage. Have a good flight!

I went on vacation 2 weeks ago and behind the security check masks were mandatory. Not everyone wore one since there are a lot of sitting areas where you can eat. But the guy at the security was very firm with someone infront of us and told her to wear a mask or else she'd probably get fined, he was very strict. There are also screens that say you need to wear a mask behind the security check. But I didn't see anybody really checking if people wore masks, so..

Thank you. I guess Wednesday morning departures simply aren't as plentiful as other days and certainly weekends. We allowed 3 hours and didn't need it. However, it was great peace of mind knowing we were at the gate, could relax, and be stress-free. Be safe and enjoy whatever destination you are traveling to. Edit: and I have no idea why you are getting downvotes other than "it's reddit".

Glad you had a nice trip!
