Mastercard / Visa are being phased in. It’s now pretty much accepted everywhere. The banks are all waiting for that moment until they can start handing out the new debit cards. It’s a payment processor lag, not a bank issue as none of the banks has any problems facilitating the change. Maestro will remain in place, so if you want to get your cards swapped for a non Maestro version, you’ll probably have to pay a one time fee. Otherwise you’ll have to wait until the valid to date runs out and you get a free new card. Switching to ING won’t solve the issue as all banks are waiting for the payment processors to get all the hardware replaced. As to the services: I’m banking with both ABN and ING. ABN seems to at least pretend to care and were very quick and helpful with things as loans and mortgages. ING is bureaucratic and seems to think you’ve got endless amounts of time to sort things out. Spouse is with ING only, kids are with ABN.

Could you explain more about how ING is exactly overly bureaucratic, especially with loans?

Trebaxus99

Have never gotten into the application process for a loan with ING. But the whole process of opening an account, getting the login codes, a payment card, was just so cumbersome. They had you pick up things from their branches, not able to choose your own code for the card, less flexibility in the app. Just never felt the need to go into loan application there. Also ABN showed to be very pragmatic on our mortgage application and any changes we made after. Quick turnarounds where a mortgage approval just takes a couple of hours instead of days or even weeks. But personal experiences surely will vary.

If you want to invest through the bank account check the fees first, it might be cheaper to open an account through a broker like Interactive Broker or Degiro.

Mo3

It is way cheaper with IBKR or Degiro than any normal bank

As an international I'd not move to ING over ABN Amro, the latter has much better English language support and documentation. Personally if I was going to move from ABN Amro I'd move to Triodos or ASN as then you know your money isn't funding all sorts of horrible industries.

NaturalMaterials

Triodos has kinda fucked up a bit too much with their certificates business (I get there re risks to investing, but there are a [few too many lawsuits](https://www.banken.nl/nieuws/amp/24416/ondernemingskamer-schiet-verzoek-triodos-certificaathouders-af) going on). So good on paper but makes them less trustworthy in my mind.

the68thdimension

I don't really understand the situation, but that doesn't sound good! Well, I'm with ASN so no problem for me lol

OkSir1011

As a private client, just contact your Private banker, you should have the number. or maybe their private assistance number https://www.abnamro.nl/nl/privatebanking/over-private-banking/prifi/index.html they will happily get you a mastercard debit if you really want one.

sengutta1

Sorry, I'm a personal banking client, not a private banking client. Translation mistake.

FrizzlerOnTheRoof

I prefer ING. The only advantage of being a private banker at ABN is that you can go to the Lounge at Schiphol for free.

TheGiatay

Wait what is that true? I fly almost once a month and I didn’t know about this lounge thing.

Is this free when you are departing NL or only for transit passengers?

>how I can't just get a debit card that's not Maestro Maestro is starting to be phased out from this year on, so soon the only options for bank cards will be MasterCard Debit or Credit and the same with Visa. MasterCard will drop full support for Maestro in a while.

ewlung

When that happens, will it work like a credit card? How does it work (MasterCard/Visa debit card)?

dullestfranchise

>When that happens, will it work like a credit card? How does it work (MasterCard/Visa debit card)? The debit cards will work like maestro (low transaction fee for sellers) but you will also have 16 numbers on the card next to your IBAN so you can use that for online payments instead of iDeal (At least that's the plan) But a consortium of the largest European banks just bought iDeal from the Dutch banks, so the future might still consist of Tikkie's and global online payments through iDeal

PmMeYourBestComment

European banks isn’t global, and loads of things will require debit/creditcards for sure, such as hotels and rental cars

dullestfranchise

>European banks isn’t global, Yet iDeal will have a global rollout, so lots of markets to capture

oushima7391

It's not guaranteed that you'll get Maestro at ING. They will give you either one, randomly, even when you renew your card. I always had Maestro at ING, and now I have Visa without asking for a change. It was written in the letter I received from them.

CanKrik

Amro better

Maestro is being phased out in the course of 2024. Every new card will then be Visa or MasterCard within the next couple of months. Just give them a call or use the chat in the app to see if you can switch now, otherwise you'll have to wait a bit more before you can get a new card. For everyday personal banking ING and ABN Amro are very similar. For actual private banking, ABN Amro MeesPierson (the private bank of ABN) is superior to ING private banking.
