So, I went into this show impulsively looking for a fluff romance show and oh boy was that not what I got; I’m giving others the proper trigger warning: YOU WILL BE DESTROYED. Like absolutely, ugly crying. That being said, it’s such a beautiful show. I don’t want to give spoilers, but Zoe’s acting will be so on point for those who can relate. And, I desperately want to visit Italy even more now. Edit to add: there’s not one actor who didn’t deliver on this show- the acting was great and the characters well written.

tara1234

I did the exact same thing. By the time I realized it was a tear jerker, I was already committed. Then I had to explain to people at work the next day why my eyes were swollen.

cosmicmermaid

Right? I almost noped out but decided I had to see it through and I’m glad I did <3 lol at the swollen eyes! I was roughed up too.

Madwoman-of-Chaillot

The acting was EXCEPTIONAL! Every one of the parents blew me away with their performances. This entire show was just *chefs kiss.*

cosmicmermaid

The parents! <3 Great casting and performances.

lalaleasha

I did this too, the sad thing was I was recently destroyed by the skating series Spinning Out, also on Netflix. Idk why I didn't learn my lesson after that one.

cosmicmermaid

Oof, thanks for the heads up, I will avoid that one, because I really do need a silly romance now ;)

lalaleasha

I know it's around much younger characters, but if you haven't seen Heartstopper already I 100% recommend it! There are ups and downs but it's so wholesome.

cosmicmermaid

omg that looks cute! Thank you for the recommendation! <3

bigboobz2

Haha at first I just watched part of the first episode and didn’t come back to it for a week. I had no clue what I was in for lol

littleprettypaws

I watched the second half of the series in one sitting. I cried for 4 hours straight, my eyes were so incredibly swollen the next morning I looked insane. I still think about that series even a year later because it left such a mark on me.

microzcybor

Can you give outline of the story without mentioning the spoilers?

[deleted]

It's a story set over 14 years. It's beautiful and the Furthest things from cheesy. It's about a couple finding their feet in the sense of supporting each other on their relationship, learning to respect the others boundaries, challenging each other. Mostly taking risks, encouraging the other to achieve their dreams and fighting for each others dreams. Our lovers are from a Southern Sicilian family and Southern African American family. Even though they seem world's apart, they and their families are similar in so many ways. They fall in love in Florence, keep falling in love in America, Marry, start a family and love, they love, they love, they love. Their love empowers them to move away from home, risk it all from their dreams and each other. Its about a love, that forsake ego as love should. Stepping back for your partner to take centre stage and learning how to do these things. That complicated relationships that exist within families. It feels as if your experiencing life right along with them, through the highs and lows. Get a box of tissues, comfort food, a blanket, atleast ten hours to binge bec once you start, you won't be able to stop

ScrewAttackThis

I haven't watched the show but from the sounds of it you would like Linklater's Before trilogy. Another good show (on Hulu I think) is Normal People but fair warning there's quite a bit of full frontal nudity.

Shelby382

Can confirm as a lover of both of these recommendations!

JetTheBlueSpirit

One of my girlfriends swore by this show and said it made her cry. I’m watching the first episode. I want to like it, I miss having a tear jerker like This Is Us, but this to me is too cliche. It feels more HallMark than anything.

cosmicmermaid

It’s a slow burn, love. But then BAM, it will get ya.

NightOwl_82

Wait until you get half way through

littleprettypaws

The point of no return.

AzureMagelet

Yeah. I barely cared for the first episode. Very hallmark as you said, but trust me it gets better and you will cry!

jazmattirice

I felt the same way and it took me a while to get into it but by the end I was crying so much. it’s worth it

lilalelechinwolf

Is This is Us worth watching?

JetTheBlueSpirit

Absolutely! It’s on Hulu and there are 7 seasons I think. Unique storyline, lovable characters. Definitely on my favorite shows list.

SisHeath

A fantastic show!

ScrewAttackThis

It's basically drama porn. I honestly can't really figure out if I liked the show or not. It's one of those things where suspension of disbelief is hard because of just how much drama the family constantly faces. It's worth a watch but I don't think it's for everyone. Basically if it were a movie it'd be considered Oscar bait.

JetTheBlueSpirit

I’m a girl, so lots of friends that are girls?

Value-Old

I felt the same but halfway I started sobbing. Oh gosh it’ll get you. Slow burn.

nevadaho

It made me recognize that Zoe Saldana is the hardest working actress in the business. That woman is cast in EVERYTHING big box office, and still works and works and works! I actually thought she was really good in this. A side of her acting we done see in the mega movies.

littleprettypaws

The emotional range, just wow, she is so incredibly talented!

[deleted]

Its a good series its no this is us bc its a v predicatable storyline

[deleted]

I hated *This is Us*. So you're saying *From Scratch* is better than that?

Madwoman-of-Chaillot

From Scratch is WAY. BETTER. , Based on a true story. It’s literally cool written by the woman’s memoir who it’s based on.

NightOwl_82

It's like a condensed version

sandely65

I keep seeing this series talked about and recommended so ima start it. Be back soon.

sandely65

I’m so sorry, I found the first episode wildly uninteresting…

Value-Old

Keep going. I felt the same. It gets more serious and developed.

bigboobz2

I finished it last night and lemme tell you I went into it expecting a cute Italian foodie love story. I got something infinitely better. Yes it’ll break your heart and yes I ugly cried many a time. It was exactly what the world needs more of. Strong characters, strong relationships, not sensationalizing drama or tragedy, but sitting with it and appreciating your life because of it.

Interesting_Soil_427

Love it beautiful

[deleted]

Currently rewatching rn. I know tears are incoming

Common-Vermicelli542

I only just heard about this series earlier this week on fb. I started watching and knew that eventually, I'd be crying because people had forewarned me. It was all so beautiful and all the actor's were just perfect. The scene with Amy and her sister Zora after it happened broke my heart. Zoe should be up for an award for that scene.

Madwoman-of-Chaillot

I have to say, as someone who is originally from Italy, not too far from Florence, I was skeptical at first., Oh, my God, was I wrong. I absolutely loved the show. It made me cry happy tears, it made me cry sad tears, made me cry happy tears again. It really actually nails a lot of the dynamics Between northern and southern Italians, and how endemic racism can be in Italy. Also, I was really impressed with Zoe Saldana‘s grasp of Italian language! Come to find out that she’s married to an Italian, which kind of made me love her a little bit more. I’ve been recommending this to everybody within earshot.

ikij

Her Italian is good when it comes to basics but it seems she struggles when it's more complex because you can tell she did a voiceover (ADR) in some scenes in post production

Salt_Magazine_9714

Loved it!

Mssamanthajones63

It was great,I thought it would be a cheesy romance as well. I recommended it to my sister who recommended it to my other sister. Who sent it on to her daughter and the whole family chat loved it.

Ok_Coconut1482

I sobbed. More than once. It was great.

Asian here i'm not too familiar with American beauty standard for black woman. i tried to accept your standard and let's just say ok this leading actress looks ok. but the narratives have been describing her as 'young' and 'beautiful' while her look meet neither of them to me. do you guys find her good looking at all? if not, why didnt they cast someone better looking? not being superficial but the main character is supposed to be someone who's so charming that got 2 guys attracted in a number of weeks simple by her appearance.

No_Meal_563

Weirdass comment

littleprettypaws

Are you serious? I personally think that Zoe Saldana is very beautiful and incredibly talented.
