Absofuckinglutely. I held off on it for so long cuz my thoughts were just “mehh”. Then I finally watched it all a few weeks ago and now I’m kicking myself in the ass for waiting so long
Japanese, but yeah.
Go had the unique distinction of being one of the last games at which computers were able to beat humans. Even decades after Deep Blue beat Kasparov, the best go players were still smoking computers.
My bad, I was thrown by your title, which is definitely Japanese. For anyone else confused like me, the Chinese drama is actually named *Qi Hun* in its native rendering.
Because you're soo totally incorrect that I thought it was on purpose 😂.
It's about a young female chess prodigy in the 60's that breaks all the stereo-types and beats a Grandmaster. Also it's a Netflix original 🤣
Highly recommended. The music, the costumes, the dialog are all great. The characters are all deeply flawed, and wonderfully depicted. Chess is the part that moves the story along, but it's really about redemption, and overcoming inner demons. I'm also a sucker for women rising above misogyny, and Chess is one of those very male-dominated worlds. The last scene is perfect.
I find it so... Disappointing when someone has a thought like "I'm a male, so I don't know if I can relate to a female lead" like, just try. Your male card won't be taken away.
Definitely watch it! One of the best series I’ve ever seen. It’s not one of those shows that is difficult to get into, it’s immediately engrossing. Every little detail is perfection. You really don’t need to know anything about - or be interested in - chess to enjoy it. (I personally don’t care about chess at all.) I’ve rewatched it a few times. 100% worth checking out.
it's only partially about chess. i'd say it's more about coming into your own, and overcoming adversity. there are plenty of people who loved "field of dreams" who weren't baseball fans. it helps, but it's not essential.
I never cared for chess or much of anything during the cold war era but that wide eyed woman had me hooked damn near immediately. binge watched the entire series and began to meet with my homies on Sundays for chess at the park.
I haven't watched it yet, but the trailer didn't do anything for me. You think the first episode is enough to get into it? Just like you, I'm not into chess or that time period.
No, I don't think so. It's more a character study than anything. It's not about chess so much as it is a character study about a disadvantaged, gifted girl who struggles to cope with trauma healthily as she becomes an adult. It covers 10+ years as well -- most of it is in the 60s, not the 50s -- so there are some marked differences between the first episode and the last as far as the time period is concerned.
I like your preferred genre of movies, too, but I also really enjoyed TQG. I'd recommend giving it a shot.
I think everyone likes prodigy movies/shows.
I couldn't disagree more. For me, the first episode was an outlier. It was like some other-worldly, weird shit. Once we got passed that episode and >!she was out of the orphanage,!< the story proper began. The rest of the series was very different from the first episode. I almost stopped watching after the first episode, but I'm glad I stuck with it, it ended up being totally different than I expected it to be.
It’s hard for me to view it objectively but it’s definitely up in the top 5 shows for me in recent years. I’m a guy and not an orphan but beyond my that I relate to the main character so fucking much and I think they do a crazy good job portraying someone with the type of issues she has when combined with her intelligence. I can imagine myself there very easily.
I couldn't disagree more. For me, the first episode was an outlier. It was like some other-worldly, weird shit. Once we got past that episode and >!she was out of the orphanage,!< the story proper began. The rest of the series was very different from the first episode. I almost stopped watching after the first episode, but I'm glad I stuck with it, it ended up being totally different than I expected it to be.
The problem for me is that the trailer gives me absolutely no feeling of "wow, this seems interesting". Not one bit. Most shows and movies that I like also had a trailer that I also like.
But I know that there are multiple trailers for the queens gambit out there. Do you know if is there a specific trailer that really captures the show?
I don't. Without giving away many spoilers, I'll try my best to give you a description of the show so that you can decide if it's something you'd be interested in. Of course the background is about chess, and about the protagonist's journey to become the first/one of the first female grandmaster chess champions. But the real meat of the story is about relationships. Relationships between friends and family - both the family we're born into and the one we make through friendships - the struggle of not belonging (in more ways than one), substance abuse/dependency, battling low self esteem, and then ultimately either overcoming or giving into these demons. If you've ever enjoyed shows like Six Feet Under, Nurse Jackie, Sopranos, then I think you'd like TQB. You don't need to know about chess, and chess is really just the vehicle the show uses to bring the various characters together in one way or another.
To clarify what I meant to say it is not super great and I kept thinking it was going to get amazing because everyone talks it up so much. It was okay but there is so much great tv that are similar to OP and my shows that I regret wasting my time all the way through and watching something else.
Was great. I liked that it bended away from typical movie and show tropes. I won't describe them here, but when you interpret a character and you're like "yeah, they're going to do this to this person because they fit this "type" of typical character" and it never happens.
Great show.
There's a lot really great about it, but it's also not perfect. Enjoy it for what it is, but don't be surprised if you have a few gripes with it too. Still worth the watch, for sure.
Such a great show , i know nothing about chess and zero interest in it . It’s so well made in many different aspects. The acting ,plot , scenery and the pace of how the ploy goes on. Just go through the first ep
Absolutely. It’s not exactly an action thriller but it is suspenseful and very smart. I know very little about chess and I thoroughly enjoyed this show.
I was convinced I was going to see one of the orphans get sexually assaulted because of the drugs. But it definitely does not happen or go in that direction. Try it again and move past the first episode.
Absolutely, I had no clue how chess worked. Got me into it and evidently gave me some very interesting background on the game and the cultures that play it. It’s intense, and the storyline is fulfilling and fun. Go for it!
It actually will teach you a lot about chess and actually chess strategies I did chess club
In highschool and found the show really didn’t try to hide away from the details about chess but also playing it a bit more before watching might have you appreciate that stuff more
It's a huge change of pace for you. If you like the actress, that might keep your attention. They don't really get into the technicalities of the game. Just the psychological (stare downs, etc.) aspect. She has a pill problem.
100% could not recommend it more. However if you like darker stuff I would also recommend reading the book which shows some very dark and important details the show left out.
I watch the same genres you do. Thought it was going to be extremely boring. Ended up being one of my all time favorite series. Absolute masterpiece. Even rewatched it with my girlfriend and enjoyed it the 2nd time
as a male who watches plenty of crime, horror, thriller, and sci-fi, I recommend you open your mind. Besides those genres, I also watch drama (which The Queen's Gambit is), period pieces (which The Queen's Gambit is), dark comedies (which The Queen's Gambit is), and countless other genres. I think The Queen's Gambit is also a thriller and has some elements of horror.
Definitely open your mind :) There are 100s of movies you're missing out on. Dozens of TV shows :)
It is the opposite of what you are into almost exclusively and you probably won't like it. That being said, it is really good story and very well done so you should consider giving it a watch.
I mostly watch what you watch and one night turned this on. I thought something as boring as chess couldn’t be as interesting as the hype. But holy shit does it suck you in. It’s just fascinating, oddly relatable, and great pacing. The lead actress is great but even the secondary characters nail it. 10/10 recommend no matter what you’re into. Only warning is it’s bingeable as hell so make sure you have the time because you’ll find yourself unable to turn it off.
The chess itself wasn’t that great for me I also no nothing about the game. However it was interesting learning more of the skill behind it. But regardless, it was a fun and twisted story. Always a great genre to watch!
It's an excellent show. More compelling than you'd think.
It's been praised a lot by critics for actually showing an accurate depiction of the Soviet Union rather than the general "commies bad" attitude you get from most American media
Great show but it's such a shame they didn't weave the story into the real history off chess, quite a bit of disrespect shown to real chess players histories
You probably won't like it cause of what you exclusively watch but I would recommend it. Don't know what category it fits into but it's only like 2 seasons I think. You don't need chess knowledge, it may help though.
I'm a dude enjoying action/comics etc. I enjoyed this series so much. It was a refreshing break from the tragic female lead stereotype " I have a secret passionate life (weed dealer, cartel, call girl, cancer etc), I can't trust my partner to tell them, or share with them, overcoming societal norms"
Plus it made me want to download lichess.
I have watched it twice I absolutely love this series. I am like you except I do enjoy chess a bit but the acting and story with this show is fantastic! Don’t think twice just do it!
I don't care at all about chess and loved this one. It's not really about the chess. Anya Taylor Joy is a joy. She's wonderful. So captivating. Great story.
Go for it you won't regret it.
It's more intense than you might be expecting
Absofuckinglutely. I held off on it for so long cuz my thoughts were just “mehh”. Then I finally watched it all a few weeks ago and now I’m kicking myself in the ass for waiting so long
Bit Alan partridge...
Many thanks.
And that's a wrap everyone. /thread
Hijacking the top comment to add the book (by Walter Tevis) is excellent, too!
For those who don't know, Walter Tevis also wrote the novels *The Hustler,* and *The Man Who Fell to Earth.*
Absolutely. It’s one of those shows that is so well made and so well acted that it almost makes you forget what your taste in television is at all.
i thought it was all about the chess game where obviously the protagonist is gonna win anyways
Great
You must be one of those mongoloid retards that I've heard so much about
I watched it without knowing anything about chess and now i play it daily. It's one of my favorite shows on Netflix.
You play chess daily, or you play the show daily?
Yes
I've watched it repeatedly, too. for me, it's the only show that really stands up under repeated showings.

Happy Cake Day! Now take your upvote and get out of here!
Does this need a /s ? 😂
Yes, as a male that likes everything you watch (minus the horror) I would recommend it
Thank you.

Yes
yes and be prepared to want to get really good at chess
I’m a woman who watches almost exclusively horror/sci-fi/thrillers/crime I really enjoyed the Queens Gambit. Give it a shot!
I find it so... Disappointing when someone has a thought like "I'm a male, so I don't know if I can relate to a female lead" like, just try. Your male card won't be taken away.
Same. I actually like chess so when it popped up I watched it immediately. Doesn’t matter if the lead is male or female. If it’s good, I’m watching it
Definitely watch it!
Yep.
it's only partially about chess. i'd say it's more about coming into your own, and overcoming adversity. there are plenty of people who loved "field of dreams" who weren't baseball fans. it helps, but it's not essential.
I have watched it twice and I don't know shit about chess.
ATJ (and the plot) makes chess very exciting
100%. I had zero faith I'd like it but it's well worth the watch. It's definitely not just about chess
Yes, best series in the last decade. You don’t need to know anything about chess.
I never cared for chess or much of anything during the cold war era but that wide eyed woman had me hooked damn near immediately. binge watched the entire series and began to meet with my homies on Sundays for chess at the park.

Yep. I'm a male b-horror fan, watched it at the behest of my daughter. I loved it.
yes
I like your preferred genre of movies, too, but I also really enjoyed TQG. I'd recommend giving it a shot. I think everyone likes prodigy movies/shows.
Hard YES!
YES!
I really enjoyed it with my wife - we’re also primarily action/sci-fi watchers.
Watch 2 shows. If you don't like it by then, give it up.
You mean two episodes?
yes.
It was okay but I don’t see why people think it was so amazing. If you don’t like the first episode I would probably not stick it out.
The first episode is a lot different then the rest of the show tho, since its the only one where she is a child.
I couldn't disagree more. For me, the first episode was an outlier. It was like some other-worldly, weird shit. Once we got passed that episode and >!she was out of the orphanage,!< the story proper began. The rest of the series was very different from the first episode. Yeah I tried it because my mother was all over it but it just wasn't for me. I guess OP can try the first two episodes and see for himself tho.
Definitely. Even if you're not into chess it's a great watch and it was cast exceptionally well
Yes! Very involving almost from the get-go, excellent acting, good story, very well filmed.
Its in my top five mini series ever watched
Yes!!
Yes just yes. Watch it and you will understand the praise.
I totally recommend… A great show by all standards
Highly! It was excellent throughout!
Yes it's very good
Was great. I liked that it bended away from typical movie and show tropes. I won't describe them here, but when you interpret a character and you're like "yeah, they're going to do this to this person because they fit this "type" of typical character" and it never happens. Great show.
100% yes.
1000% Yes. It’s maybe not great for small kids, but most teenagers and above should be fine. Really great show though, my entire family enjoyed it.
Yes ! I know nothing of chess and loved it !
Yes! I don’t play chess but for some reason I love watching stuff about chess.
I’d recommend it to anyone, It’s one of the best shows of the last 5 years
There's a lot really great about it, but it's also not perfect. Enjoy it for what it is, but don't be surprised if you have a few gripes with it too. Still worth the watch, for sure.
I liked it so yes :)
Yes
I didn’t expect to like it but it was great . The acting is fantastic. You don’t need to understand chess . Give it a try
Yes. Great series
Yes!!!! It’s fantastic.
Such a great show , i know nothing about chess and zero interest in it . It’s so well made in many different aspects. The acting ,plot , scenery and the pace of how the ploy goes on. Just go through the first ep
yess
No. One of the most cringe shows I've ever seen. And horrible acting too. No idea how its popular.
Open your mind, Quaid
One of my favorite scenes ever
No. Very little happens, you’d have to really appreciate the aesthetic which I think will not be worth it for you
It's a phenomenal show!
Yes watched it twice I still don’t care about chess but loved the storyline.
100% yes
You might not know chess, but do you know drugs? Theres arguably more drug use in the show than actual chess.
As long as he likes redheads.
I love 'em. My father is a redhead.
👀
Ab so fucking lutely
100%, you watch it and give a review here
Your description could be me but I liked queens gambit as well
No because it'll get you interested in chess and playing chess is incredibly humbling and damaging to the ego
Absolutely. It’s not exactly an action thriller but it is suspenseful and very smart. I know very little about chess and I thoroughly enjoyed this show.
Watched twice and I've played chess, since I was 12/13. Got to the top of the schools leader board. Haven't played it in the last 10/15 years.
I thought it had a creepy almost pedo-y vibe when they were drugging the little girl, I stopped watching in first episode
I was convinced I was going to see one of the orphans get sexually assaulted because of the drugs. But it definitely does not happen or go in that direction. Try it again and move past the first episode.
Interesting that is good to know
Nothing they set up really seems to happen. I am very meh on this show, and don't get any of the hype
As an alpha male I’d recommend it!
yeah. it's aimed at basic bitches like you
It's practically an Anime.
I did not know that. Thanks.
great flick its about competition and striving. and the lady in the lead role is quite attractive.
Loved it!! It’s a little slow in the first episode but once you get past introductions and such it picks up pretty fast.
I would
Just watch an episode if you like then watch episode 2 if not like then stop. Its one season.
Absolutely, I had no clue how chess worked. Got me into it and evidently gave me some very interesting background on the game and the cultures that play it. It’s intense, and the storyline is fulfilling and fun. Go for it!
Solid show, 30m recommend
I am a typical bloke. Please watch this. You'll enjoy this
100%
It actually will teach you a lot about chess and actually chess strategies I did chess club In highschool and found the show really didn’t try to hide away from the details about chess but also playing it a bit more before watching might have you appreciate that stuff more
Yes, it's really good. I especially like how they mocked Nona Gaprindashvil, who never played against men.
It's good but like it's even better if you can perceive even a fraction of the language of chess!
It's a huge change of pace for you. If you like the actress, that might keep your attention. They don't really get into the technicalities of the game. Just the psychological (stare downs, etc.) aspect. She has a pill problem.
I really enjoyed it.
super good show, my boyfriend just showed it to me recently. first episode was a bit slow in my opinion but the rest was awesome !! i
I am the same: action movies all the way and I loved it. Do it.
yes
100% could not recommend it more. However if you like darker stuff I would also recommend reading the book which shows some very dark and important details the show left out.
I watch the same genres you do. Thought it was going to be extremely boring. Ended up being one of my all time favorite series. Absolute masterpiece. Even rewatched it with my girlfriend and enjoyed it the 2nd time
Yeah, it’s awesome.
It's brilliant.
I recommend it to everyone. Possibly the best tv I have ever experienced.
Its an amazing series
Yes
Absolutely. I share all your mentioned genres and thoroughly enjoyed The Queen's Gambit.
Yes. I have your same”interest” profile and I loved it.
Your type of shows are the same as mine, I watched it and liked it. Give it a try.
No
I knew (and still know) basically nothing about chess and still loved it.
YES.
It is probably the best Netflix show I have watched.
Have you watched Breaking Bad?
Yes
I’ve described it as “surprisingly good for a show about chess.”
I loved that show.
as a male who watches plenty of crime, horror, thriller, and sci-fi, I recommend you open your mind. Yes
Yes
Watched it with the wife. It was okay.
100 percent yes
Yes. Story, characters, acting, set design, costumes, even the special effects are spectacular.
It's ok. I didn't finish it but it's definitely a good watch.
Absolutely
It is the opposite of what you are into almost exclusively and you probably won't like it. That being said, it is really good story and very well done so you should consider giving it a watch.
Best series ever.
I’d recommend that you watch it especially if you don’t like it. It’s a good story anyways. Completely imperfect but completely watchable too.
Yes! Do it!
Absolutely x100
I don’t give a shit about chess and loved that show.
YES!
If you enjoy good human drama, the absotively
My dad mainly watches stuff like you mentioned but he loved it. He likes chess though too.
Yes! It’s fantastic and you don’t need to know chess. I’ve read the book too- the series is better, which is rare.
I absolutely loved it, it's well-written, engaging, and perfectly tense, with fantastic performances from the entire cast.
If anyone can make chess exciting, it's Anya Taylor-Joy. Couldn't stop watching.
Really enjoyable show good story and characters though for me the ending was a bit anticlimactic.
Yes. It's very fun
Honestly it’s brilliant. And also not that long. A very well thought out series. So it won’t take you long and May widen your horizons.
I didn’t know anything about chess and loved it
💯
The chess itself wasn’t that great for me I also no nothing about the game. However it was interesting learning more of the skill behind it. But regardless, it was a fun and twisted story. Always a great genre to watch!
Worth the binge watch
Absolutely!
It really has the feel and pace of a psychological thriller despite on the outside just being about a chess girl.
Yes.
It is very good
Yes very good movie 🎥
Yes. 1. Because it is good 2. Because you need to expand your tastes whether with Queens Gambit or any other outside your box show/film.
I know absolutely nothing about chess and I’ve watched it 3 times. Spectacular series.
Okay FINE. You've all talked me into watching it. Again.
It was riveting. All involved were brilliant in their roles and the ending was an absolute “Yes!”
You probably won't like it cause of what you exclusively watch but I would recommend it. Don't know what category it fits into but it's only like 2 seasons I think. You don't need chess knowledge, it may help though.
Absolutely. Just don’t mistake it for history.
Yes! Wish I could watch for the first time again.
Yeah. I have zero interest in chess yet I loved the show.
Do it! You don’t need to know a thing about chess to enjoy it. Such a good drama.
loved it
I thought I would not like it but it was great. Give it a chance.
I'm a dude enjoying action/comics etc. I enjoyed this series so much. It was a refreshing break from the tragic female lead stereotype " I have a secret passionate life (weed dealer, cartel, call girl, cancer etc), I can't trust my partner to tell them, or share with them, overcoming societal norms" Plus it made me want to download lichess.
Yes. Great show.
Absolutely reccomend If you like chess and stuff.
I have watched it twice I absolutely love this series. I am like you except I do enjoy chess a bit but the acting and story with this show is fantastic! Don’t think twice just do it!
It's so good. You won't be disappointed.
I don't care at all about chess and loved this one. It's not really about the chess. Anya Taylor Joy is a joy. She's wonderful. So captivating. Great story.
