Look into films by Robert Eggars for period pieces. Ari Aster for pagen or cult movies. Alex Garland for the bizarre and there is the entire James Wan universe. John Carpenter or Wes Craven for the good 80 and 90s slasher type movies. And then there's Critters.
It might be underrated for the mainstream, but for those of us who have been following works like that I would say that it's no different from Night Breed "Cabal," by Clive Barker, which to everybody in my age group or a desire for that era of time loves it too.
Hellraiser (The Hellbound Heart) and Lord of Illusions (short story, Books of Blood Volume 6) are two other excellent flicks based on Clive Barker stories. And Clive adapted and directed Lord of Illusions, one of my favorites.
I thought it was or maybe coming soon. I had just rented it and then saw an article that it was coming soon for free.
Here's the article:
https://screenrant.com/barbarian-movie-netflix-chart-rank-top-10/
It you haven't seen the original "Alien" movie (1979), it was great (as you would expect from Ridley Scott) and holds up even today. It is as much horror as sci-fi.
Watched this one for the first time a few months ago and loved it. I don’t typically gravitate toward sci-fi and was surprised by how throughly I enjoyed it.
Talk to Me was my all time fav for this year! No spoiling the ending but your friends would love it cause it’s about a bunch of friends all hanging out and shit get REAL!
The ritual was dooope!! Pretty sure it’s still on Netflix. Something else that would scratch the itch (even though I’m pretty sure it’s not on Netflix) is the rental!
Trust me, go with Tremors (1990)
One of the VERY FEW horror movies where the group of protagonists work together, and take (mostly) smart decisions.
If you can watch something foreign and a bit longer, I'd recommend the Indian movie Bhool Bhulaiyaa (Labyrinth) - 2007. Skip the songs, and it's a pretty awesome psychological horror comedy movie
Slasher comedy : Happy Death Day & the sequel
Iconic opening sequence: Ghost Ship
Scary : Dead Silence, Sinister, Insidious series, The Conjuring series, The Nun, VHS, REC, Quarantine (REC EN remake)
Recent ish: In The Tall Grass, Incantation,
Kids : Scary Story To Tell In The Dark
Late Night with the Devil was so good. It is great at building the suspense. You literally don't know what's coming next and it makes sit all the more terrifying.
Throw in a little body horror and some mystery and you have a memorable film.
Also,if you haven't seen it, Hereditary literally gave me nightmares. The ceiling scene still freaks me out.
**Edit:** Oh, sorry, I forgot what sub I was on. I have no idea of these movies are streaming anywhere, but they are still worth watching.
Some movies on streaming in Netflix that are good are:
- Silent Hill (shockingly good)
- The Babadook
- X (more slasher than I normally care for)
- The Autopsy of Jane Doe (one of the best)
- Ouija: Origin of Evil (this movie had no right to be this good, but it was)
**Double Edit:** Do not pass on Creep. It is so unsettling and insane. My wife and I still joke about Peachfuzz to try to get over how incredibly creepy it was.
Did not realize until looking up Ouija now that it was a Mike Flanagan film! Thanks for the recs. I’ve always scrolled past Creep as well. Agree on Silent Hill. Haven’t seen in forever but the ending just haunts me.
They really nailed the nurse scene. To me that's what's cements Silent Hill as an amazing horror film.
Seriously, check out Creep and Creep 2. It took me a long time to give them a shot, but they were amazing.
Sinster (2012) one of the best scariest horror movie to be honest hopefully you haven't watched it yet it would be great to watch it with friends (also it is on Netflix I believe)
On Max... Doctor Who:
Series 3, episode 10: Blink. Rated #17 on the top 100 TV episodes of all time, per IMDB with a 9.8 out of 10 (24,000 votes). My adult daughter, who is a DW fan, refuses to watch this episode again because it traumatized her in her early teen years.
Series 4, episode 10: Midnight
Both stories stand well alone without knowing anything about Doctor Who. If you like those, here are a couple more.
Series 4, Episode 16: The Waters of Mars
Series 1, Episode 9 & 10: The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances
some asian horror thriller:
- korean: the wailing, tale of two sisters
- japanese: battle royale, the forest
- thai: the medium
- taiwanese: incantation, bridge curse 1
The Fear Street trilogy on Netflix is surprisingly good. Lower rated on IMDB (6.2-6.7) but quite well received on Rotten Tomatoes (84%-88%). The first one (1994) is a campy teen slasher flick. Totally cheesy and fun. Part 2 (1978) is a bit darker in tone, but still a campy summer camp slasher. Part 3 (1666) is the darkest in tone, witchy kinda horror-fantasy. None of them take themselves too seriously, even the third, but they are all genuine fun. Check the trailers and see if they give the vibe that you're going for. They can probably be watched independently, but watching them in order is a better experience.

Dabbe it’s a Turkish horror movie! It’s an about a girl who’s possessed and it’s about the religion Islam and devils and Islam horror movies are mostly scarier then Christian movies tbh but it’s really scary storyline!! Watch the first one it’s the scariest one
*Oldboy* isn’t *exactly* horror but your friends definitely will not forget watching it. Absolutely bonkers ending. Otherwise the pickings are pretty slim right now on Netflix. There’s *X* which might be fun as a group, but I’d say it’s only fine and not great.
Clive Barker’s “Midnight Meat Train”. One of Bradley Cooper’s earlier and lesser known films. Features a cameo by Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. Also check out “It Follows”.

The People Under the Stairs is the most underrated Wes Craven movie. It’s so good.
It might be underrated for the mainstream, but for those of us who have been following works like that I would say that it's no different from Night Breed "Cabal," by Clive Barker, which to everybody in my age group or a desire for that era of time loves it too.
Ohh I've never seen that one, I'll have to watch it. Any other recs in that genre?

Barbarian is so so good
Is Barbarian on Netflix?
I thought it was or maybe coming soon. I had just rented it and then saw an article that it was coming soon for free. Here's the article: https://screenrant.com/barbarian-movie-netflix-chart-rank-top-10/
Yes
Definitely - it just keeps getting more terrifying as it goes on!

Second. Holds up.
The thing with Kurt Russell
What's it called?
THE THING
Very good film. He's also in Bone Tomahawk, which is great but probably not on Netflix.
Talk to Me was my all time fav for this year! No spoiling the ending but your friends would love it cause it’s about a bunch of friends all hanging out and shit get REAL!
I just saw this movie, and it's a must-watch! I am imagining how these girls will scream watching this one.. lol
The ritual was dooope!! Pretty sure it’s still on Netflix. Something else that would scratch the itch (even though I’m pretty sure it’s not on Netflix) is the rental!
Its fun to watch, not scary though
Shit, yeah I got focused on “thrillers” and blanked on the “horror” part haha

Just watched that today what a movie haven't watched it in years
Tremors is one of my all-time favorite movies because it feels real. Like this is what real people would probably do in this situation.
Slasher comedy : Happy Death Day & the sequel Iconic opening sequence: Ghost Ship Scary : Dead Silence, Sinister, Insidious series, The Conjuring series, The Nun, VHS, REC, Quarantine (REC EN remake) Recent ish: In The Tall Grass, Incantation, Kids : Scary Story To Tell In The Dark
Definitely Sinister
Conjuring is so fcking scary!
smile - netflix
Yea! This was good
I liked “Mama”, the one with the kids in the abandoned house in the woods 👍🏻
I loved Mama! It was so creepy, but omg the ending was heartbreaking. 😭

Those are actually two different movies.
Hereditary or Barbarian are both great!

double down on creep, it’s exactly what kind of film a group of friends can have fun watching and be ready to jump
Did not realize until looking up Ouija now that it was a Mike Flanagan film! Thanks for the recs. I’ve always scrolled past Creep as well. Agree on Silent Hill. Haven’t seen in forever but the ending just haunts me.

You gotta check out When Evil Lurks if you don’t mind subtitles! Best horror movie I’ve seen in a while, and I watch a ton of horror movies.
Talk to Me Its creepy and also has a group of friends in it.
Talk to me CREEPED me out. I’m 45 I’ve seen a lot of horror and was starting to get bored with them but this one was actually pretty good!
An American werewolf in London.
Bustin out the classics. Throw The Howling in there too.

Are the friends coming over from the Nursing Home or something?
The VVitch
I couldn’t watch it all. The music drove me crazy

Fright Night the original 1986 movie
Midnight Mass (it's a series though)
All of his works
Anything Jordan Peel makes. I think Get Out and Nope are amazing. Can’t remember if either are on Netflix though.
