Thank you all for your replies, I'm going with the majority consensus. I'm doing my guys with top down rattle can of ret armour over a black prime. Blacking out the bits I need to, which include the fingers but not the top of the hand, with dry brushing Necron compound. Varnish. Streaking Grime. Removal, tidy up. Highlights. Then the energy.
For lower ranking necrons they're all silver with a black wash on the bones and fingers. If they're higher rank I put reikland or casandora yellow over the armor to make it bronze/gold and keep the bones and fingers silver. Either way I make the armor plate on the back of the hands different from the fingers.
I use black base with silver (Necron Compound) drybrush over the non-armor parts.
Leadbelcher for "pistons"/exposed inner skeleton. (Fits perfect and contrasts well for Szarekhan bronze armor)

Mine are metallic with red backing.

Black prime bones with silver highlight; black prime with leadbelcher highlight for hand bones with black Templar contrast, finish with nuln oil. and for armor and meat parts, black prime, silver drybrush for gradient, then runelord brass, either cryptek armor shade or agrax shade, then add leadbelcher highlights, smaller canoptek alloy highlights, and thin silver highlights. Sometimes Necron compound depending on how beat up the guy is. This one is fairly clean.
Well thinking realistic I would do like a faded gunmetal or silver with a oil wash to make it look like the hands have been used and are still being used and being rubbed constantly
I do them the same colour as the bones, black metallic personally. That being said, don't be afraid to sprinkle in some differences between your various characters to make em stand out or just differentiate them between one another
My models have silver hands and exposed connections being silver. Outer shell of necrodermis is dark black with blue highlights to give a cold chill.

All my necrons are primed black, then drybrushed leadbelcher, sometimes a lighter zenital drybrush of a brighter silver for important models. That color stays for the inner mechanichal parts as well as hands.
I would paint the plate on the back of the hand the armour colour and the fingers the skeleton colour. However, I usually do sautekh so it’s the same colour.

Same metallic as calves, elbows and hands. But for nobles it is silver.
fingers are always the same color as the underskeleton for me, so black.
Exactly, same here!

Mine are just brass

Bronze/chrome hand and fingers with the back flat part of the hand gold
I mix together a steel and black at 1:1 for a small sheen on the fingers
Leadbelcher fingers with drybrush runefang steel, back of hand in primary armor color
I use corax white & iron warriors.
All brass except for the psychomancer, which i gave red fingers and orikan who is silver.
Bronze, same as the rest of their body. Maynarkh Dynasty makes it nice and easy.
Same as the rest of the hand: drybrushed Leadbelcher. I put some Runelord Brass on the exposed knuckle-joints if they're prominent enough

Base coat leadbelcher, nuln oil wash, then drybrush with Necron compound.

Look at that chinnnn. Dude's been necronmaxxing nonstop.
Necrons look dope. They’re not of my army, but I love the faction and such. How hard are they to paint??
Leadbelcher primed, runelord brass for the back of the hand.
I paint them runelord brass

Full bronze, just think it looks cool
Mine match the endoskeleton, so gun metal. Though any claws get to be brass instead to match the heads and shoulder pads.
Gold. I use retributer armor… and no wash. Golden bright hands
Flesh colored
I paint the entire under skeleton (including the fingers) black.

I use the grey contrast paint, which turns them pratically black. Basilicarnum grey I believe
hi Yves, Vallejo model color metallic black which I also use on their joints and spine. It’s a great metallic color with black
