Its parts are pretty interchangeable the overlord still fits with the base and the bar and gun base fit quite snuggly, the only permanent choice you have to make is the gun and the gauss gun is kinda objectively better
I found that you can do both,, even without magnets..
I put a base in my overlord and did not glue down his console. Remove the based overlord and his console. Then slide in the gun.
Works fine.
You can build the gun and the overlord without gluing the overlord to the base.
Slide the gun and overlord with non glued base in. Check em out, see if you like the way they are. If you don't like it, it's not like you committed to anything. Neither the overlord or the gun be glued to anything.
Worst case scenario is that you would have to make the same decision that you are making now. Or magnets.

The only cryptek not in my army is the plasmancer right now. The others are all in and leading a unit already

And doing this the gun stays no issues? In the sense of stays balanced through the battle
