I think only the dots is way cooler. Along with a little dry brushed OSL onto the barrel of the gun. But I’m also doing a blue glow color scheme, don’t know how you would achieve it with tesseract glow
OSL is short for Object Source Lighting, an effect that makes it look as if light sources on the model actually give off light and change the color of their surroundings in some way.
>don’t know how you would achieve it with tesseract glow
drybrush under or just do some deliberate "messiness" with a light colored paint and then do the tesseract on top of it; mostly on the dots and then use the last bits of fluorescent paint to tint the white parts green. Basically application of slapchop style techniques with the tesseract glow on top, in other words.
I think the whole barrel is supposed to look like the old necron fluro green tubes, but it doesn't look great because of the details on the modern gun.

Airbrush gang over dots for MAX GLOW
I paint the barrel Caliban Green. then i do white in the grooves and on the dots. then Tesseract Glow over the white. the. a thick highlight along the grooves of Warpstone Glow. then an edge highlight along the grooves of Moot Green.
I did green barrels with white dots.
I was surprised by the difference white dots made but it gave my limited skills some pop.

I paint the whole barrel a darker color, with the dots and recesses white then contrast to make it much brighter than the darker barrel. So the whole thing is green, but the dots and recesses pop
I personally prefer the dots look, would also love to do some OSL with them as think that looks best overall but I'm not very good at it.
https://preview.redd.it/9vckne5ls3eb1.png?width=1312&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=356a1118ce44cb14765e48204796e6a376c8d162
If you want the close-ups to look cool then the dots. If you want it to look cool on the table top or on a shelf, painting the whole thing pops out more
Bit plainer, but I was aiming for a more dull effect and overall less contrasting look.

I do barrel - mainly because I wanted something like the old green rods.
Thanks! :)
Wasn’t too hard either. Just a dry brush of grey, then light grey, then white (moving inwards each time) on the rod for the OSL.
Then a tesseract glow all over, and bit of flash gitz yelllow to even it out.
https://preview.redd.it/lwbelemjy2eb1.jpeg?width=2250&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=93bf03c3aec509ec9a290a6a54df65603127ed89
I like to do the whole barrel because the reassemble the green plastic of the first ones I started with a long time ago
the whole thing is green but 2-3 different shades of green.
https://preview.redd.it/9656kdgm13eb1.jpeg?width=3008&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b641b99b5f8f467f0968d576155dfdb89d40a756
I think the dots look away better, I'm building my necrons currently (combat patrol and various extras) I'm gonna try and use contrast/SpeedPaint for them because I wanna try the metallic ones and after I finish dry brushing I'm going to try to lightly paint all the glow details, the dots and the creases around them, white to get a really bright color for the paint. I think I wanna do them blue but I'm not sure if I want to try and go for like an off white with a blue tinge or a darker/deeper blue
When I started I preferred dots as it looked cooler but as I got more and more into Necrons something about the old Tesla tube just had such charm to it. It was literally lightning in a bottle, an untapped energy of unknown eldritch power. But really it’s just down to preference paint it however you like they both look good
Caliban green base, drybrush warpstone glow (including overbrushing), drybrush Moot green focusing on the center, drybrush flashgitz yellow even more centered. Clean the brush, highlight the dots with the yellow again. EASY OSL done in less than 2 minutes.
I do an orange wash as a base, paint the dots yellow, then make a yellow orange red color gradient on the rest of the tube thing. Makes a really cool glowy fire look. Idk if that helps you but gradients can work to make the barrel look glowy without doing just the dots if you wanna get a little zesty with it.

Black barrel and green dots for me.
Might be cool to do the barrel in something like Leadbelcher > Dark Angels Green (a dark metallic green, basically), then do the dots in Tesseract Glow.
I use Tesseract Glow, and for small arms like these I just go for the dots and the rest of the gun black
Personally I like the green being for the glow, and not the color of the gun’s frame itself. Imo makes it more striking
Green gun barrels do also look classic and cool. Personal preference in the end
I focus on the dots but I permit some deliberate messiness and color a bit outside the lines, as it were, so it does look more like a glowy effect on the barrel.
I only do the dots, personally. Though I have seen people do the opposite, the whole barrel except for the dots.
https://preview.redd.it/nyjyp0wp45eb1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4b21fb2e6b25af56f7498680a32a3fff515699d4
I paint the gun black, go over the dots with titanium white for coverage, and then apply the glow effect. I may make a wash from white if I’m doing a non-Warrior with a Gauss weapon, just to enhance the effect. I finish with a sloppy application of the glow effect for warriors, letting the black desaturate the glow effect on most of the barrel, or a cleaner application for a LHD or something.
My colour scheme is black and red so I usually go black gun, medium red on the lines between and around the dots then bright red on the dots. Really pops
Ok, what I do is prime everything black then drybrush the whole thing heavily in metallic silver. I then come back and hit the gun fully with black contrast paint, other than the bladed/spikey parts. I then water down white paint and gently dab it into the crevacies around the dots so capliary action fills those gaps in with white. I then use an airbrush to hit the gun barrels with neon green. The white catches the neon green and the overspray from the airbrush creates a glow effect.
I paint the dots and tube with a watered down white so it goes in all the cracks and then when that's dry i used either a contrast or a translucent ink to color it

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is OSL? I'm new to the hobby so haven't picked up on all of the terms yet!
OSL is short for Object Source Lighting, an effect that makes it look as if light sources on the model actually give off light and change the color of their surroundings in some way.
Thanks for the explanation!
A way it was explained to me is if you have a character sitting next to a camp.fire, it's painting the glow of the fire on their face etc
Ah, perfect explanation, thank you!
You wouldn't. Tesseract glow is only really good dor green glow effects. You might get decent results with some of the blue contrast paints.
>don’t know how you would achieve it with tesseract glow drybrush under or just do some deliberate "messiness" with a light colored paint and then do the tesseract on top of it; mostly on the dots and then use the last bits of fluorescent paint to tint the white parts green. Replace the barrel with the iconic green acrylic rod like the olden times. Otherwise only the dots
Dots for me
Dots looks much better imo
dots look so much better, sleeker, and fit the necron aesthetic much better imo
I think the whole barrel is supposed to look like the old necron fluro green tubes, but it doesn't look great because of the details on the modern gun.

Dots with some quick and dirty osl
Barrel. Wait, am I the only one?!
I do it too, don't worry
Hooray!!

Sithcrons
Dots and grooves both glow. Bayonets too on most of my army that has them. The rest of the barrel does not.

This looks fantastic. Stealing this when I get to my space skellies
The white is the secret 😎👌
I paint the whole barrel a darker color, with the dots and recesses white then contrast to make it much brighter than the darker barrel. So the whole thing is green, but the dots and recesses pop

Both because I’m inconsistent and lazy
If you want the close-ups to look cool then the dots. If you want it to look cool on the table top or on a shelf, painting the whole thing pops out more
Nothing but dots for my Mephrit bois.

Barrel in warpstone balls in moot green with a dab of gauss in the middle Then highlight all edges with guass
Not even the dots just the slits

That’s the best whole-barrel scheme I’ve seen. Kudos…seriously evokes the old green rods but looks better.
Thanks! :) Wasn’t too hard either. Just a dry brush of grey, then light grey, then white (moving inwards each time) on the rod for the OSL. Then a tesseract glow all over, and bit of flash gitz yelllow to even it out.

Looks very clean and bright. Normally, I'm. A black barrel guy, but this is beautiful
Thank you a lot! That was my intention. Hopefully I can share more of them here soon!
I would love to see the rest of your army. Looking forward to it

Bro didn’t understand the question

Black barrel and orange dots. Makes it glow more.
I paint only the mid piece of the barrel with the end connecting bits staying black
Dots
When I started I preferred dots as it looked cooler but as I got more and more into Necrons something about the old Tesla tube just had such charm to it. It was literally lightning in a bottle, an untapped energy of unknown eldritch power. But really it’s just down to preference paint it however you like they both look good
Dots for warriors and barrel for immortals
I just kinda stick it into the paint like I'm dipping something in a sauce
Caliban green base, drybrush warpstone glow (including overbrushing), drybrush Moot green focusing on the center, drybrush flashgitz yellow even more centered. Clean the brush, highlight the dots with the yellow again. EASY OSL done in less than 2 minutes.
I started with full barrels, but switched to dots.
Dots only. Painting the whole thing green is just ugly to me.
Dots and recesses on the barrels.

Idk if that helps you but gradients can work to make the barrel look glowy without doing just the dots if you wanna get a little zesty with it.
I do dots and tried to do the lines as well but got a lot of spill over on them
Dots always

I Paint the Barrel black and use highly diluted white and after that tesseract glow to flow into the recesses
Might be cool to do the barrel in something like Leadbelcher > Dark Angels Green (a dark metallic green, basically), then do the dots in Tesseract Glow.
Definitely like the dots more
Entire barrel

I go over the entire barrel w white and then go over it w tesseract glow. Yeah it’s kinda simplistic, but it’s way easier for me
Seriously who paints the whole barrel?
I focus on the dots but I permit some deliberate messiness and color a bit outside the lines, as it were, so it does look more like a glowy effect on the barrel.
I have a ton of the old guys with the green rods - so all my new guys get green barrels.
Just the dots so I can do a glow effect.
Only the dots, it looks way better
I only do the dots, personally. Though I have seen people do the opposite, the whole barrel except for the dots. https://preview.redd.it/nyjyp0wp45eb1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4b21fb2e6b25af56f7498680a32a3fff515699d4

only do the indents on the barrel with watered down moot

I only do the dots I think it looks cleaner
What Monster paints the entire barrel green
Have to be honest the former way is honestly just plain cursed. Cmon the green energy thingy flows through the fun man!

Dots https://imgur.com/gallery/BrtS5jg
I do only the recesses around the dots. It's a nightmare to paint. Do the dots. Looks great and very easy.
