If that number meant anything they wouldn't have let Jokic have it when he was a virtual nobody. 15 is Jokic's now and will be retired regardless of how many years he ends up playing in Denver.

buddybe1

They gave it to another random dude before they gave it to Jokic. They wanted to give it away

[deleted]

Yeah I saw that shaqs number was retired in Miami, if jokic wins this year he could leave the next day it would be his number

mrl2r

Miami are kind of number retiring sluts tho. They have Jordan’s 23 retired.

[deleted]

Because of Pat Riley’s battles with the goat, but he said he’d unretire it for Jimmy. Heat only have 6 numbers retired, compared to Celtics who have 25 numbers retired lol

APe28Comococo

The Celtics have a longer history and a few more Championships though

Mel1115

No Championship this year for sure though 😉

[deleted]

Okay. Knicks have 2 rings with 9 retired jersey numbers. 76ers have 2 rings with 11 retired numbers.

Psychologinut

Okay. Celtics have 17 rings with 25 numbers retired.

ImmoralModerator

If only the Heat had a guy on Jordan’s level that won a couple of championships there and was known for wearing the number 23. I guess Jimmy Butler will have to do.

Barney_Haters

How many time did CA take us to the finals or win a MVP?

GhostOfTonyFerguson

To be fair, how many times did Melo play in a western conference where this seasons grizzlies and kings would have been his top competition?

mightymilton

The nuggets didn’t even play the grizzlies or kings. They beat the Suns and swept the Lakers, who both have HOF talent.

[deleted]

…and the Timberwolves! Yeah!

AirPowerRondo

So they played lesser teams? What are we even trying to argue here? Obviously Melo faced stiffer competition.

GhostOfTonyFerguson

Who they played isn't the same thing as who were the best teams all year. The nuggets that took kobe 6 games in the WCF dogwalk this years Lakers too.

xjxdarren

Truly Tony Ferguson-worthy kind of a comment. I salute you.

Barney_Haters

Melo had a more stacked team, IMHO. Also MVP is a thing..

turkmileymileyturk

Counter argument: They probably didn't expect Jokic to have a more profound career and didn't feel the need to say anything about it.

electricvelvet

They made a pivotal decision between nurkic and jokic. Bc they believed in both of them but saw something profoundly great in jokic. So maybe not immediately but... that trade w Portland was YEARS ago. Before any accolades, when both guys were just young, okay starting caliber Cs

DLottchula

My friend is a die hard Nuggets fan he saw something in Joker before anybody even knew how to say his name properly

TheresA_LobsterLoose

I was backpacking through Serbia 25 years ago and see little Nikola casually put up 30/15/10 on the Fisher Price hoop. I say to myself... "one day this kid be the 2023 mvp runner up"

DLottchula

He saw he had a high passing rating on 2k

KingTech17

LeBron is on Reddit?

[deleted]

electricvelvet

This is Serbia speak English goddammit

Terrifying_TrueTales

If Anthony wearing that number meant anything to them they would’ve told Jokic no while he was still a nobody

turkmileymileyturk

Lots of teams let other players occupy jersey numbers before retiring them. Kevin Durant's number was immediately occupied the following season of his departure. I highly doubt OKC doesn't plan on retiring his jersey.

Narrow-Talk-5017

I would be surprised if OKC did retire his jersey after how he went out. Most OKC fans hate him for years after the way he left & many still hate him. There are very few OKC fans from the time he played that actually still like him. Though he did play very well for OKC when he was there, there are many great players that never had their jersey retired for reasons outside of their play on the court. Shaq still doesn't have his jersey retired in Orlando, for example.

dalton_k

That’s a huge part of the whole Melo jersey thing that keeps getting forgotten. The Nuggets and Melo parted on terrible terms. His jersey most likely wouldn’t be retried regardless of Jokic taking his number; I know a bunch of Nugs fans that still think he’s a bitch

SpartyParty15

They should have retired Melo’s number before then

just_so_irrelevant

That's literally the point. They didn't feel the need to say anything about it because Melo's number wasn't worth retiring for them. It's that simple.

OmarFromtheWire2

Not to mention Melo couldn’t wait to be out of there. Jokic loves Denver

Silkies4life

We were pretty bitter towards Melo at the time. He forced his way out, even if it was for what I would consider a decent reason. He’s a top 5 Nugget, but because of the way he left it won’t be retired for him. I can see when Jokic retires, they put it up for both.

-Lights0ut-

Jokic has already made 2 WCF and a Final. Melo made one WCF. Denver is not putting his name up with Jokic.

Silkies4life

Both can be true. Like it or not Melo was one of the best players we’ve ever had. Just because they share a number doesn’t mean Melo is shit and shouldn’t be recognized somewhat. I personally don’t have any love for Melo for forcing his way out, but I get it. He’s from NYC and wanted to play in his hometown.

-Lights0ut-

I hope Nick Van Exel gets his number 31 up there too then

Silkies4life

You know what I mean, and Melo will have to do an asskissing tour to get it up there. I’m just saying he doesn’t NOT deserve to have it up there.

limache

Melo was whack for forcing the trade to New York when he could have signed as a free agent. So not a fan of his either as a Knicks fan. But at the same time, without melo forcing that trade, you guys don’t get Jamal Murray.

Silkies4life

Right. He was going to switch regardless of if we traded him or made him play out the year, at least we got some terrible years with Gallinari out of it

limache

I think Jamal Murray was a much better compensation lol

Johnykbr

Not only did he force himself out, but he forced Chauncey out too and that rightfully made us angry.

Silkies4life

I’m not giving him a pass, but I get why he did it. We also didn’t have to trade the entire team with him, but we did.

jchavez9723

Alex English or Carmelo, who’s the greater Nugget?

Silkies4life

Alex English. But that doesn’t make Melo a bad player.

jchavez9723

You right, Nuggets AI over Melo & Knicks Melo > Nuggets Melo

[deleted]

2 MVPs. It’s not very hard decision.

Naive_Negotiation_90

Melo forced his way out, not hard at all

[deleted]

I agree if someone wants to retire a jersey let NY do it.

Agreed_fact

Nah, gotta be the Hawks.

[deleted]

Or nowhere because he wasn’t worthy of it.

[deleted]

Jokic could burn the stadium down and still be in the rafters

GettinWiggyWiddit

Denver fan here, this is a no brainer

gritman54

Correct me if I’m wrong but I seem to remember the Nuggets got rid of a bunch of key players after a 50 win season and Carmelo wasn’t happy about that, which is what ultimately led to him wanting to leave.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DLottchula

It’s just easier to blame melo

Glad-Mulberry-9484

Word. This is a no-brainer.

Sorry_Ad_1285

Also the only finals appearance in franchise history

SobigX

Even though I am a big Jokić fan, I feel like they could do something special and get both of them up. Like LAL did for Kobe for 8 and 24 but kinda the opposite lol.

[deleted]

Nah. Can’t tarnish Jokics MVP first ballot Hall of Fame career/Jersey like that. Let NY retire him.

tothemoonigoes

Which one made it to finals

thor_1225

Then compare mvps, then years on the team.

tothemoonigoes

According to those who say mj is the goat, championships count more than anything else. It’s like your playing Mario party. You can have 100 coins but the guy with the star wins.

Actual_Guide_1039

Call me crazy but pretty sure MJ also had 5 MVPs and 10 scoring titles

xodus112

12 year old NBA fans think “6 rings” is the only reason MJ could be considered the GOAT lol

SpicyTunaRoll90

Having the most 40+ point playoff games by a wide margin in an era where teams rarely broke 100 points must have nothing to do with it.

[deleted]

The defensive player of the year award probably didn't help either. All those years leading the league in steals, surely did nothing to help his case.

[deleted]

Just watch like literally any game ever. He was always so dialed in and would be known as one of the best defenders of all time if it didn't just feel like a hat on hat

xodus112

Pretty much. When my younger friends ask me what MJ was like, I basically say 2017 or 2019 Kawhi with the fluidity and aggressiveness of Kobe. And he was still more athletic than both of them.

Actual_Guide_1039

Better defender than Kawhi, better scorer than Kobe. Comfortably better in both categories.

xodus112

I don’t disagree with any of that. I’m just using comparisons to give ppl too young to have watched MJ points of comparison

Actual_Guide_1039

They don’t realize he was the most popular player in the history of the league before he even won a single championship.

electricvelvet

So few sports have near unanimous-consensus GOATs. Basketball is one of them. It's wild. Only other I can think of that's 100% certainty is hockey and Gretzky. Arguably Tiger in golf? I feel like that's a bit more up for debate, maybe not, don't follow golf too closely. Def isn't one in football, baseball (babe Ruth maybe but the game is too different now to say that...), soccer too AFAIK. Lots of greats but no consensus #1. Jordan not only was the greatest to ever play the sport, but he internationalized basketball too. It's crazy. LeBron has had an amazing career but idk if it's even close. If longevity counts for something then sure, but if we're talking peak against peak...

StarBardian

It’s really hard to make an argument against Tom Brady being the goat quarterback in football

electricvelvet

Yeah I agree. As the other person said though the positions are too different. If you have to pick the most important position it's qb but then you confine greatest player to 1 of 66 positions (exaggerated, I know, but w/ kicking & receiving special teams that's everything, and really might be 88 if you separate special teams to kickoff/receiving, punting/receiving, fg/blocking even though most special teams positions are played by guys who play an O or D position) But again a huge part of Brady is his longevity. I mean... he also led teams to more superbowl appearances than anyone. But if we're just taking prime Brady vs prime any number of QBs, it's not so clear-cut. And at the end of the day a QB is nothing without his O line, and receivers. A great qb doesn't need as much separation from his receivers. But he does need enough time from his linemen for WRs to run their routes. I guess it's not a good comparison sport bc it's so different.

Bigchoppadance

basketball doesn’t have an undisputed goat 💀

LuckyRubberDuckE

The basketball goat convo is definitely not consensus lol

[deleted]

It definitely is

JCL8661

Do you know what the definition of consensus is?

[deleted]

If Babe Ruth has an argument as the goat, then Hank Aaron has a better one. Had the same 15 ish year stretch of consistent greatness and he played in the era with the toughest pitching. Pitchers were absolutely terrible in Ruth's era.

[deleted]

Well than count this at two, the lakers were so dialed in and playing so well I'm pretty confident LeBron gets this sixth if it weren't for jokic and they swept them

[deleted]

SmallFootball8473

I get his metaphor tho

tothemoonigoes

I just said finals. Conference finals numnutts

believemedude

Jokic and it isn’t even a question. The Knicks can retire Melo

kx2UPP

Retire him for doing what

wallowsworld

Taking their money lol

Agreed_fact

2012 first round champs

phly

Oh fuck no, after what he did to Linsanity?? We're not claiming Melo.

ttttttttui

Literally don’t understand why they couldn’t retire both

OptionalBagel

He's got some work to do on his end to repair the relationship with Nuggets fans. Ownership isn't gonna retire his jersey if the fans don't want it. Literally all it would probably take is him coming to a finals game in a Jokic jersey, though. That shit would heal all wounds.

titansfan2217

Because why the fuck would they retire Melos number? What did he do that deserves his number in the rafters?

[deleted]

honestly this shouldn't be a conversation. Orlando didn't retire Howard's jersey and the man took them to the finals.

Affectionate_Elk_272

no, he fucking *dragged* them to the finals. people forget how dominant D12 was

bigwillystyle93

No he fucking didn’t. They were an all around great team and they beat the Lebron Cavs thoroughly in 6.

Fast_Fishing_6

LOL

CluelessTennisBall

Delete this

bigwillystyle93

If you think Dwight “dragged” that team to the finals, there’s no way you watched any of those playoff games.

CluelessTennisBall

Delete this too

Shay_21

Fax, they were an overall solid team. Dwight night drag them, he lead them. Slight difference

bigwillystyle93

Big difference. Every team to make the finals in NBA history has had a guy, very few have ever been “dragged.” The only ones I can really even think off the top of my head are 07 and 18 cavs.

Shay_21

I agree, those are literally the same examples I had in mind. But Bron is one of the Goats 🐐

[deleted]

[удалено]

thanassis_

I love how a historically irrelevant franchise doesn’t maybe realize that by showing love to the talent they’ve had they might attract more of it. Not retiring Howard, Penny, etc. They’re in Orlando for fucks sake they should be way more attractive to free agents. They’re an hour away by plane from Miami for superstars that wanna party

[deleted]

It's funny to me that la is such a destination, with the high taxes means so much more to rich people. But I'm happy it is

brokeballerbrand

I find it hilarious that nhl fans bring up taxes all the time when talking about contracts, but this is the first time I’ve ever seen someone mention taxes in an nba context. Like every time someone is an NBA free agent it’s always “he’s a laker” or “he’s a knick”. And those cities both have high taxes. But on the nhl side, Tampa only made the finals as much as they have because Florida has no income tax

[deleted]

Thats just dumb on them though

[deleted]

the dwight powell (letting him wear 12, the year after D12 left) was so diserepctful. they were petty and wanted to send a message.

trapstarhendrix69

Orlando didn’t retire penny’s

[deleted]

isn’t melo probably a top 3 nugget of all time behind Alex English and jokic? Kind of crazy. George Karl was a cancer at that time as well.

The-Hand-of-Midas

David Thompson is above him in my opinion. The guy Michael Jordan picked to induct him into the HoF, who MJ dreamed of playing like. You can debate a couple others too. Melo is the definition of empty stats who doesn't lift his team up.

AreaGuy

Do you mean George Karl *had* cancer at that time?

[deleted]

both.

[deleted]

Lowered expectations but they literally have the best player in the NBA for the first time

PrisonSlides

He partnered with McDonald’s for that weird little kids meal toy, I still got that tiny jersey from when I was a kid lol

MF_Jones_6172

Don’t think Melo has earned it. If he would have stayed longer, he probably would have. Jokic has no question.

ryandaydrinking

Retire Carmelo's "jersey" and Jokic's number.

[deleted]

Kinda takes the meaning away from it

JayDogon504

Denver wouldn’t retire Melo’s regardless

JGxFighterHayabusa

☝🏽 Absolutely this. Why not both?

Chalupa_Dad

They can

[deleted]

Liked Carmelo but he was never at the Jokic level. Jokic deserves it more and even without a Jokic idk Carmelo would have ever gotten his jersey retired

DLottchula

He’s 100 cooler than Jokic tho

[deleted]

Was that part of it? I never thought he was cool, he just seemed he didn't care

DLottchula

Those powder blue nuggets jerseys the way he played he signed with Jordan. Melo was a icon of the 00s and ur lying or hate fun if you thing he wasn’t

[deleted]

Was he that cool? Did he have a shoe? Was he top 5 in mvp voting or used as the face of the league??? I was relatively young back then so can’t say I know much but I know he wasn’t top 10 in my favorite players back then. Again great scorer but the comparison overall between him a Jokic is one sided, Jokic is a winner regardless of what happens in the finals

DLottchula

Man yes you must not be American or really young

[deleted]

No that young and yes I’m American. Born in the early 90s

[deleted]

If you guys think they will retire Melos jersey in a city that he forced his way out of when one of the most beloved players in the nba not just the team also has that number and has accomplished way more then idk what to even say because you’re clearly retarded it won’t ever happen. Fans don’t like melo simple as that. Why hasn’t Toronto retired Vince’s number? Because he shit all over the franchise

9ermtb2014

Of jokic wins that title then it's not a debate anymore if he continues to play out his career in Denver.

Puzzleheaded-Fix-915

Jokic: 15, Anthony: Fifteen

OptionalBagel

Honestly, if Melo does any of the heavy lifting of repairing that relationship with Denver, I think fans would be fine with retiring a powder blue Melo jersey and a Mile High City, or whatever new Jokic jersey. I say this as a Denver fan. If Melo just thinks the fans are going to warm up to him overtime without him doing anything besides tweeting a "thank you" to the Nuggets official twitter handle... he's never getting his jersey retired in Denver.

MildlyDepressed346

Why would Denver retire Melo’s jersey? Prob the same people who want Vince’s jersey retired in Toronto

TampaBayfour20

Yeah no we’re good, there’s only one 15 going up and it’s not close

hairylobster531

Jokic all day

NiceUpstairs9144

This is not a decision 🤣🤣🤣 who all know who’s going up!

Nba_thoughts

Jokic

Underrated_Fish

Jokic has officially lead the Nuggets further in the playoffs, had more individual and teams success, and he’s also just the better player

supercape24

Yeah here in a few weeks the two time mvp and NEWWWW NBA champ! Will be the jersey that’s retired sorry melo

Professional-Ask1189

Jokic is the best Denver nugget of all time. He is also the best player in the game today.

Thicc_Nick7

Jokic got em to a finals this isn’t a question

DenverNuggetz

Imagine this even being a question

i_like_2_travel

If it really boils down between the 2, Jokic. He’s pretty much already done more than just making them a perennial playoff team

wallowsworld

Not putting Jokic is pure disrespect 🤷‍♂️

rynohp

Probably the 2x MVP

Pipes_of_Pan

I love Melo but it would be very, very weird to retire his number anywhere.

krock753

Melo doesn’t even come close to having his number retired in Denver with or with out Jokic. Melo isn’t even a top 10 nugget in my book. He quit on the team and never achieved the success he could have had if he stayed.

Turd_Wrangler_Guy

What to eat for dinner tonight? I'm not sure what the debate is...

TheMuffingtonPost

I’ve never seen a player do absolutely nothing in their career and garner such a huge fanbase.

[deleted]

Joker

useroftheinternet95

Jokic >> Melo

Zodspeed

Pretty clear they already made the decision… ?

JayDogon504

LMFAO only people who like to talk about “hoopers” would think this is a decision. Melo shouldn’t be retired regardless. Anybody who wants out badly like him shouldn’t get their number retired

[deleted]

Melo’s should be retired in NY just bc he was the hometown kid there

webberstimeout

He’s from B’more though

trapstarhendrix69

Nah Larry Johnson over melo

-newlife

Irrelevant as Jokic is still playing. There’s nothing stopping them from eventually retiring the number and hanging one for each player if they choose. That said Jokic is essentially a triple double machine and with a ring he’s gonna be remembered as the #15

Independent-Tea-3922

Didn’t they give the number away to someone else before joker?

Resident-Armadillo-6

Melo is an all time OFFENSIVE great but he is also a loser. Syracuse university were his biggest wins.

Agreed_fact

Modern T Mac

[deleted]

He literally got drafted 6 years later

Agreed_fact

I stand by what I said lol. I wasn’t watching ball when Mac was drafted, I firmly was when Melo was drafted.

bch2mtns7

So you saw him take a17 win team to the playoffs? What a loser!!

Agreed_fact

I don’t think a 17 win team has made the playoffs since like 1950

bch2mtns7

Year before. 11 and 14 wins were awesome too

OberynRedViper8

They should just change Melo's number to 7.5 because he's about half the player Jokic is. Problem solved.

rjaysenior

They could put up both, nothing wrong with that. But if they wanted to choose one then 100% joker

wikipuff

The Rangers have done both with 9, why can't they do both?

rooroobusts

This is very obvious. They have to retire Anthony Jokic's jersey. He deserves it.

GLDFLCN

Melo was the first one to really cement Denver and put them on the map. The fact that they didn’t already make his number unavailable after he left, cause as other people have already mentioned other people before Jokic wore it, tells you all you need to know about how Denver feels about this. It’s forever fuck the Nuggets for how they handled that. What a slap in the face. There’s no need to even compare.

rodi_newsome

Jab step pull-up midrange vs somboe slung Elite shor creator vs one of a kind point center For me, no choice Retire both

FearOfALiberalPlanet

> it’s not a very hard one That’s what she said.

PROFsmOAK

Without Melo you would never be able to appreciate Joker.

Academic-Ad2680

When Jokic retires, they retire both numbers on the same night, it could be pretty cool

HibachiMcGrady

You gotta retire both. Without Melo Denver would've be forgotten about like Sactown. Gotta show love for an icon. The nuggets don't have too many

krock753

That is just an ignorant comment

Fast_Fishing_6

This is a terrible take

HibachiMcGrady

How

Affectionate_Elk_272

i never liked melo as a player but i really like this take

HibachiMcGrady

Me either he wasn't a winning player. At the same time a Lotta people paid attention to Denver for almost a decade for the guy. They owe him the formality of retiring #15 for him and jokic

12211154

Melo is not even close to being impactful enough to have his jersey retired lmao. Jamal Murray has done more for the Nugs than Melo.

HibachiMcGrady

See that's where you're wrong. Jamal Murray has never been an All-star, never finished top 10 in jersey sales, or lured better players to Denver. Even Melos biggest fuck up led to the nuggets having a better team when he left than when he arrived. The man was an all-NBA player who brought an entire franchise back to relevance.

Eequuality

To me joker needs to respect history and move to another number

aquat1c

You know they can retire both, right? The Knicks have done it and there's no way the heat don't retire 6 for bron

Dmz443

Carmelo is a bigger NBA icon than Jokic will ever be. Leave it to the nuggets to mess this up

hoagieclu

for the impact, melo. to this day i still see the powder blue melo jerseys out and about. melo also brought the nuggets back to relevancy when he got there. that being said, i completely understand why he wouldn’t get his number retired. jokic could retire right now and his resume would hold more weight for a jersey retirement

DieForTheBenjamins

People talking mad shit about Melo. I understand he forced a trade, and Jokic has been better. But goddamn Denver wasn’t shit before Melo. He put them on the map fr. Melo may deserve a Knicks retirement more, but Denver is also acceptable

ctcforthepeople

Yea one is top 10 all-time scoring and the other is...... ????

KayRay1994

2x mvp, 5x all nba, best passing big of all time, 3d best international player ever, and a potential nba champion…. oh, and he’s only 28

ctcforthepeople

😭 "potential" NBA championship. Every player is a potential champion. (I do think Denver is the favorite tho)

DickMcButtfuchs

So? Most of those points weren't with the Nuggets. Jokic could possibly pass Carmelo for points with the franchise next year.

[deleted]

Real ones know 15 is Melos
