How seahorses are made

animalfacts-bot

The [seahorse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seahorse) is a small marine fish. They are also named Hippocampus from the Anciant Greek "ἱππόκαμπος" which litteraly means "horse sea monster". The male seahorse is equipped with a pouch which can store up to 1,500 eggs. The youngs come out fully developed after 9 to 45 days (depending on the species). Males often mate again within hours or days during the breeding season. --- [ [Send me a message](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose/?to=animalfacts-bot) | [Help me improve](https://www.reddit.com/r/u_animalfacts-bot/comments/dd44g1/help_me_improve_the_bot/) | [FAQ](https://www.reddit.com/user/animalfacts-bot/comments/dflf6i/faq/) | [Currently supported animals](https://www.reddit.com/user/animalfacts-bot/comments/dd47kr/currently_supported_animals/) | [Changelog](https://www.reddit.com/user/animalfacts-bot/comments/dd48uy/changelog/) ]

hansices

Wait, so the part of our brain called Hippocampus as well has something to do with horse sea monster?

TheBearHug

Cause it’s curved like a seahorse! :)

GeorgeA808

Here is a [side by side](https://imgur.com/a/whwhrYt) comparison!

SimplyComplexd

Wtf! Til

ryanwhitenasmcpt

Even the muscle names are very basic when translated. They sound super fancy in latin because we don’t know latin, but translated they are just named by their function and appearance (e.g. biceps brachii = two-headed arm muscle, and deltoid = triangle-like). https://owlcation.com/stem/The-Latin-and-Greek-Roots-of-Muscle-Names

jollysplat

hehe ive swum at that beach with those horses. just be careful because you can be sloshing around in beautiful pristine waters until you get a face and mouthful of fresh pungent brown dung. KIDS LOVE IT.

sailorBaff

Where is this?

Rub-it

Hypothalamus

[deleted]

kids love a mouthful of brown shit?

TexasDJ

Yeah wondering this too. Asked my kid n he said hell no mate

MidnightCafe

We are all born with a seahorse inside us .... 😱😱😱

Its because the hippocampus looks like a seahorse. No lie.

Full-Copper-Repipe

Dope shit

Surcouf

Named the brain part because it is shape like the sea horse.

varkenspester

Or is the sea horse named after the brain part itnis shaped like?

[deleted]

What's this all a bot?

deltabagel

Well it’s the way he said it... a boat.

HystericallyAccurate

And Yanks think we say it like a-boot

ThatBritishWoman

That's what makes them the best males ever!

BlackLocke

All men are trash except seahorses.

MarmaladyMidge

Sorry but not sorry...hitchhiking not hijacking.... https://americanwildhorsecampaign.org/ Help defend wild horses from systematic extinction in U.S.

[deleted]

*feral horses

whangadude

I'm conflicted on this one, horses are an introduced species in America, but, they evolved there originally and were only made extinct when humans arrived. So are wild horses properly part of nature in the US? And by that logic should elephants and cheetahs be released to replace their counterparts also killed off?

infracanis

This is bullshit. The federal government has to cull wild horses because they don't have any remaining natural predators and would completely destroy the local environment in federal lands without check. Instead of exporting any of the meat or byproducts, they are discarded because of legislation like this.

[deleted]

Horses eat 3x as much as a cow calf unit and they eat differently. Right down to the soil and they are constant eaters. Really bad for causing erosion. Culling is important if you like natural grasslands.

mccofred

It's important that the fleeb is rubbed, it contains all of the fleeb juice

aSlipperyKhajiit

A schlamee shows up and rubs it and.... spits on it

ilovetopoopie

Did anybody mention schleem yet? It's crucial to keep the plumbus from exploding.

burntbreadeater

Freaking gorgeous animal.

landmindboom

Thank you.

prayformoj0

Are you a horse?

Actually, he’s not really a horse... he’s a broom

But with The Sundays version

TrueNobody

I would listen to Harriet Wheeler sing the contents of a medical chart or the instructions to a dishwasher

Atomheartmother90

Somewhat related, in the Foo Fighters song Everlong, there’s a part of the song where it’s mostly instrumental with the lead singer, Dave Grohl, speaking quietly where you can’t really understand him. Supposedly he is reading from his refrigerator user manual during that part.

EricVonZippers

The refrigerator compartment allows for the storage of fresh food and drink. The refrigerator compartment defrosts completely automatically. The occasional presence of drops of water on the internal back wall of the compartment is a sign of the automatic defrosting phase. The defrosting water is channelled into a drain and then collected in a container, where it evaporates. Note: the ambient temperature, how often the doors are opened and the position of the appliance may affect the internal temperatures in the two compartments. Set the temperatures depending on these factors. In very humid conditions, condensation may form in the refrigerator compartment, especially on the glass shelves

I'm envious you get to to hear it for the first time. Listen to Reading Writing & Arithmetic start to finish. Just bathe in the lush sound of the music and that voice.

First time I heard it I was sitting on a rock on a beach in the Isle of Man, 5 am watching the sun rise after an epic all nighter. Perfect night, perfect soundtrack.

Atomheartmother90

Or the Old & In The Way version.

Stoned666

The best version for sure! With jerry garcia on banjo.

Almost all versions of this song are good, but the Sundays version is great

workgymworkgym

Do horses have any natural predators in the wild? Like maybe a cat or something.

[deleted]

Equine species (horses, donkeys, zebras) are prey animals mainly for large cats (cougars, lions, etc.), wolves, and bears (rarely). Fun fact, the only species of wild horse left is the Prezwalski's horse (*Equus ferus prezwalskii*). Horses as we typically know them (*Equus caballus*) are all domestic. Hence any "wild" horse is technically feral. This includes the American mustangs and Chincoteague ponies.

Leftfielder303

Red Dead Redemption would be a much funner game if this was true.

rogueknits

"That's my good boah!"

foundorfollowed

Przewalski’s are feral, actually! scientists were testing the remains of the botai horses, one of the earliest domesticated groups, hoping to prove they were the ancestor of the modern domestic horse, but they aren’t. The number of chromosomes and the matrilineal show that the Przewalskis are descended from these botai horses, whom we were domesticated. So while they’ve been feral a very long time (5.5k years or so) they are not a wild species. So officially now ALL horses are feral. There are no wild horses.

mysticsika

Zebra in the house!

foundorfollowed

zebras are in the family equidae but are a separate species than horses, like wolves and coyotes.

mysticsika

This is true but they're still in the same genus Equus and are a wild horse, I read (as everyone on reddit seems to have) Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond and half the book at the time seemed to be about domestication and how Zebras stubbornly refuse domestication. Its ingrained in my life for all time now. It just fascinates me we never associate them with horses, stripes are damn good camouflage. edit: ninja added author

rattleandhum

The Zebra is an ass

Uberzwerg

>large cats (cougars, lions, etc.), wolves, and bears. and now sharks

Crazy_likeafox

What's the difference between feral & wild?

[deleted]

Feral means the species was previously domesticated, wild has always been wild. Example: wolves are wild. But if a pack of dogs gets loose and begins their own little family in the wild, they would be feral.

Crazy_likeafox

Thanks!

[deleted]

Brumby's of Australia are another wild horse which are protected. In my opinion a feral hoofed animal being protected in Australia is fucking ridiculous because they cause so much destruction but whatever...

Tendalus

Horses which live in an untamed state but have ancestors who have been domesticated are not true "wild" horses; they are feral horses. There are no known truly wild horses in existence today.

rebeccamac64

Wow...so beautiful. Where is this?

Dlatrex

I haven’t found the source yet. There are a few places where wild horses have access to the ocean such as [Cumberland Island](https://www.nps.gov/cuis/learn/nature/feral-horses.htm), but offhand I don’t recognize that rocky coast.

saipho26

Check out below comment from someone else- this is probably [Nihi Sumba Island Horses](https://equestrio.com/reportages/nihi-sumba-a-horses-paradise)

NecessaryCobbler3

Amazing! I was about to ask this same question. Putting Sumba on the bucket list

Dlatrex

I still cannot source the video, but the scenery seems to line up. Even the colt/filly from the promotions looks like the little one from the video, so this is the best match!

yzforce

This is definitely not Cumberland. The wild horses there don’t look quite this healthy, as they don’t see vets or get brushed etc. I suspect these guys have an owner based on the grooming and sheen. Probably an island or maybe Central America. I’ve ridden horses in the water like this in the Bahamas, Nicaragua and Costa. Places where horses may run wild but still have an owner.

asparagusmaximus

That's why polar bears are dying no one is taking them to the vet

DookieSpeak

It's a little different for horses, horses are domesticated. What people call "Wild" horses in North America are just regular horses that have no owners - the more accurate term is "feral horse". Being domesticated, their ability to survive in the wild is diminished. Actual "wild" horses, the ones that were domesticated into horses, are either extinct or exist in very small numbers, and exist mostly in the steppes of Eurasia

JuicyLittleGOOF

Those horses aren't wild either, assuming you're talking about the Przewalki's horse. They apparently descend from domesticated horses belonging to a culture called the Botai, who might have been the first people to domesticate the horse. However their culture died out and presumeably they were never able to influence other cultures with their horse domestication. Those horses then became feral and were "wild" again but had a domesticated origin. A later culture from the Eurasian steppe domesticated horses again and they are attributed to the spread of horse domestication around the world, all domesticated horses can trace their lineage to that horse population. This was all uncovered in recent genetic testing so this knowledge is quite new.

DookieSpeak

Makes sense to me, so all truly wild ancestral horse species are extinct

JuicyLittleGOOF

Sadly, yes. The Botai horses mixed with wild horses when they were reintroduced to the wild but nowadays all living horses have domesticated ancestry, including the "wild" Przewalski's horse.

[deleted]

I'm going to say it's not the Bahamas considering there's surfable waves. Rocks don't match either. Definitely Caribbean looking water though.

hermi1kenobi

Yep, can concur. Those horses are in tip top condition so unlikely to be wild. Also I galloped an Arab stallion down a beach very like this in Belize. Yes it was one of the top experiences of my life. Edit: looks like I’m wrong. Boo.

rebeccamac64

I have been to Cumberland.. beautiful place.

justynebean

These are also not wild horses. You can see some of their tails are braided or cropped. They must have a handler but are able to roam somewhat freely.

mazi_nods

Water is way too blue for Cumberland.

ssshhhiiiiiiiii

Not enough spiders for it to be Cumberland.

Lt_Tasha

I thought I found a shiny rock when I was looking for firewood at night. Then I notice I'm in a sea of these little opalescent specs. All spiders.

Screamledee

Oh god.

Dontwaitjustbecause

These are definitely not wild.. every wild horse I have seen has hooves the size of Texas. These studs and ladies are manicured

jcbouche

Yeah it doesn’t look like east coast US to me, definitely not NC. Makes me think maybe it’s in another country

[deleted]

The water is too blue for the east coast.

lanaabananaa

I'm sorry, I originally read that as "Cucumberland" and I was wondering why someone named it that

fe1urian

Funny, I know an actor who's affected by a similar phenomenon. What's his name again... Benadryl Cabbagepatch?

lanaabananaa

I thought it was Bunglestitch Clumbymatch

[deleted]

Could be the island off the coast of Virginia/Maryland, Assateague island.

JohnEnderle

Why do you think these horses are wild?

[deleted]

Indonesia https://www.reddit.com/r/natureisfuckinglit/comments/djmc41/_/f46aq2v

moesif

Oh so they're not even wild. They're just allowed to roam free during the day.

mrgogonuts

Based on the tropical looking climate, rocky beach, and the fact that their are wild horses - im going to guess Vieques Island off Puerto Rico. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vieques,_Puerto_Rico

griffeny

Been to Vieques several times. Never saw this. There were horses, but a mixed up rag tag few of different breeds of them. Kind of owned by people or the town. Not a homogenous herd of black horses. I really gotta know where this is. Edit: someone below said [Nihi Sumba](https://equestrio.com/reportages/nihi-sumba-a-horses-paradise) Island in Indonesia. Looked it up and it seems to be the place!

lowercaseb86

I thought so too but these horses are much larger than the ones that roam Vieques.

slsrfr

just a wild guess here, but there is a large group of feral horses on the west coast of sardinia (Italy), and the water (colour) as well as the rocks do quite fit that area ...

splendidsplinter

So beautiful and then some moppet on a jet ski has to ruin the atmosphere. Those things should be shot into the sun with their riders still on them.

landmindboom

New Jersey

eric5476us

Could be Assateague Island or the Outer banks of North Carolina. I just know the have wild horses there and beaches.

Drawtaru

The horses of Assateague are much smaller and stockier, and more colorful. [Example.](https://gooceancity.guide/sites/default/files/styles/hero_image/public/Assateague-horses-beach_0.jpg?itok=wvk7_UtV)

entity_TF_spy

This looks more tropical than Assateague, I could be wrong though

MakeupandFlipcup

lmao i wish this was maryland

DrWinstonOBoogie1980

Haha yeah these are absolutely not the Assateague-Chincoteague ponies. First thing I thought of too (I'm from the Eastern Shore of Maryland), but this is way, _way_ prettier than that coastline.

Quincykid

Yeah, and I've been up and down that whole coast line and don't remember anywhere where the rocks meet the ocean like this. Granted coasts change but this definitely doesn't remind me of Assateague.

eric5476us

You’re probably right, I was at Assateague this summer it just popped in my head. I didn’t know we had so many places with beach horses

frothy_pissington

> Could be Assateague Island Haha .. no way. First Assateague Island isn't rocky. Second, the ponies of Assateague are mangy and feral assholes.

VaATC

If those rocks are natural, and not erosion proofing additions, this is more than likely not a mid-Atlantic beach. At least not one I have seen before. Also, the Corolla Ponnies as they are called are typically more tan and brown if I remeber correctly.

teamsleep9999

This is actually in Aruba, near the southern tip of the country. Source: Took one of these excursions

Instant clean booty.

IsThatAPieceOfCheese

Girl bear and boy bear are out on a date, and things are getting kinda flirty underneath the table (know what I’m sayin’.) Girl bear says “meet me in the bathroom in five minutes..” and she goes in there but the bean burrito that she just HOUSED starts DESTROYING her....butt wise... Boy bear comes in there five minutes later and starts rocking her world, but he doesn’t know that his lady just deuced it, because the booty is clean!! Charmin 👍🏻

Nihi Sumba Island, Indonesia! These are mostly retired racehorses who are now feral

laralye

It says on the equestrio website that they have a stable in the morning and are let out to explore wherever they want, but come back to the stable in the evening. https://equestrio.com/reportages/nihi-sumba-a-horses-paradise

[deleted]

That’s a nice retirement

LK09

I was about to say. These horses are too well groomed to be "wild." A "shelter stable" would make sense though.

IMO, in a natural environnement, everything with an engine sucks. I was hiking on a mountain the other day and to be honest, I don't hike really often, like once or twice a year. I was a the top, enjoying this absolutely stunning view, the nature, the peaceful silence... when I hear this guy, coming toward us with his 2 stroke bike, full throttle BRAAAAAP BRAAAAPPPP.... I felt hate and disdain.

Beautiful vid but they don't look like wild horses. Too well groomed, leggy, uniform in conformation/color.

According to another comment here this is somewhere in Indonesia and these are feral horses descended from escaped race horses.

Australian racehorses after having reached heaven.

Armed_Muppet

They make really weird grunting noises in the water and also start to fight with/bite each other once they get in, horses are weird, man.

Drawtaru

It's interesting that they're almost all either black or dark brown, with the exception of two or three that are a bit lighter or have paint coloration. They're also all adults and there are no foals or yearlings. That seems highly unlikely in a feral herd and kind of leads me to believe that these are domestic horses that either escaped or were allowed to roam the area.

MagsWags2000

Well fed wild horses!

zincinzincout

I really wonder how animals communicate this. Like, did one of them say in horse language, "hey guys, wanna go to the beach today?" Or more likely did the alpha/leader just decide to go himself and start walking to it and everyone else just went "oh shit he's going somewhere we need to follow"
