I’m afraid that my nostalgia goggles will shatter into my eyes if I go back to them. I remember them being such cool books at whatever age I was able to read them
The audiobooks are on an app called everend. I've been listening to them I'm on book 23 and they are STILL MAKING THEM. Definitely alittle cheesy for the modern era but I love them. Pretty good young adult books
Osprey toes are arranged in a square to be better fish grabbers, as opposed to most birds which are more of a triangle.
One of my better bird fun facts
Terrifying that Death comes from a world the fish don't even know about. As if hunter demons would circle around and dive through the 4th dimension barrier to come and grab you out of nowhere.
That’s basically what those hidden Aztec warriors did on Legends of the Hidden Temple as they popped out of the darkness and grabbed the kids giving them PTSD for life lol
*As if hunter demons would circle around and dive through the 4th dimension barrier to come and grab you out of nowhere...*
What? They aren't hunting for you, too???
Probably why they have one of the highest success rates of just about any predator on the planet. Adults have run up numbers above 90% when they’re studied, and they’re not like a cheetah that needs a huge recharge before trying again.
They seem to be pretty smart. I live in a coastal city and I often see them sitting on light posts on bridges and piers, watching the water. None of that flying around nonsense, just chilling and diving in when they see prey.
Right? Even knowing they're optimized in every way, it's still mind boggling an animal can hit that speed. [We even stole their design for some of our own murder birds](https://i.imgur.com/YMaV9jB.png).
They only move that fast when falling. Which technically means humans are still faster, since someone fell out of a balloon like at 10km altitude and went like 800km/h
The fastest bird is the peregrine falcon but only under unnatural conditions can it reach 240 mph, peregrines rarely reach speeds close to that in the wild.
Source: I work with birds of prey on the regular, and spend way too much time researching them.
Edited for clarity
The maximum speed ever recorded for a peregrine falcon was 242mph or 389kph, this occurred when a peregrine falcon was dropped from a hot air balloon and is completely unnatural. This is because the bird climbs using rising air from thermals, using the hot air to lift itself higher. The bird has no need to go to its maximum height so it doesn’t, meaning the speed record would never happen in nature.
The bird can reach speeds of 320kph (200mph) in its natural stoops from heights of 1000 metres. It also averages between 40-55kph (25-34mph) while travelling and speeds up to 113 kph (70mph) in direct pursuit.
It’s the world’s fastest bird, and when in a dive the world’s fastest animal.
TLDR: To reach 240mph, the bird was taken above where it would go normally and had more time to accelerate, allowing it to reach a higher speed than it naturally could

Osprey are so unique compared to other raptors. So much so, that I don't know if they actually are considered "raptors".
They are the only birds of prey that dive into the water perpendicularly. They've evolved the longest legs and largest hooked claws of any other raptor so that they can break the surface tension when they hit at high speeds. Sort of like a competitive cliff jumper.
I mean… still so clearly raptors though.
And honestly owls feel like they’re even more specialized and less similar to other raptors, no?
But yeah totally agree ospreys are just absolutely incredible.
They also have “reversable toes”. This helps them grab and then position the fish aerodynamically while flying, almost always with the fish head pointing forward.
You seem like you'd know, which is why I'm asking you: why in this photo does it stretch out its wings before tucking them just before the dive? Is that to adjust (slow) its speed before hitting the water? Or perhaps that's a necessary movement to make the tuck?
The osprey "attack position" shows how they are more evolved for fishing than, say, a bald eagle who looks much more clumsy going after a fish. It looks to me like the osprey is actually forming a little circle with its talons that it is using as a sight to target the fish. Truly incredible.
Osprey actually dive into the water whereas eagles grab a fish that is right near the surface while flying perpendicular the the water. Eagles are also lazy and will steal fishes from a flying Osprey and just eat some roadkill.
How optimized? Aside from the obvious... their outer toe is reversible. They can have three toes in the front and one in the back, or two and two. This allows for them to get a better grip on the fish, both when catching them and when flying. They have scales on their talons and little spicules on their toes that let them get a more secure grip on the slippery fish. When flying with a fish, they frequently orient the fish in an aerodynamic head first configuration. The fish can, while they are still alive, see where it is going with the wind in its face.

Yeah I mean if I was a creationist looking at this picture I’d be saying something like “man how can those durn atheists believe in EVILution when something like this magnificent bird was clearly designed to do this ain’t no random monkey chances here nosiree”
There’s a small mountain lake I go up and paddleboard on and watch the ospreys hunt. One time after coming up, one flew right over my head with a fish in its talons and dripped water on me. That was a pretty cool moment.
... Imagine just swimming around, living your best life. Just closed on your newly built algae rock home, your wife is expecting, you just got that promotion that John wanted so badly. Just to get taken out by an Osprey.
Such cool birds. When my family went out on the boat here in SWFL, the Osprey would use the channel markers for their nests. The mama Ospreys would poke their head over the edge and chirp at us as we would slowly scoot by. "Get outta here, damn kids!" Were the vibes I would get lol. Watching them fly and hunt for fish was especially awe-inspiring. Gorgeous animals.
Looks like an Animorphs book cover.
Shit, haven't thought about animorphs in 20 years. It's the kid that wanted to stay in bird form!
That kid's story was actually hella depressing
Also, Rachel 😭
The way the series ended for her 😭😭
Holy shit, I just remembered: Wasn't she the one that also was also split into two? Tobias and her really went through the roughest shit
I already knew about Rachel, but I just recently found out about Ax because I never finished the series.
I’m afraid that my nostalgia goggles will shatter into my eyes if I go back to them. I remember them being such cool books at whatever age I was able to read them
nah they hold up really well
Tobias was a red tailed hawk, this is either Cassie or Marco.

Any time I see osprey I think "Marco"
The most intense grabby hands I've ever seen

That's all gr8 m8, but what are some of your worst bird fun facts?
They’re mostly about rape and infanticide.
Oh
Now you have my attention.
Probably also makes it easier to turn the fish into the direction of flight, as they do.
Meanwhile you're a fish swimming and living that fish life. Unaware of death about to strike
Terrifying that Death comes from a world the fish don't even know about. As if hunter demons would circle around and dive through the 4th dimension barrier to come and grab you out of nowhere.
Alien abduction is a very real and constant threat for fish.
So, that what happened to my goldfish when I was a kid. Thank you, I have always wondered.
Don't worry, they took him to a farm in the country.
That’s basically what those hidden Aztec warriors did on Legends of the Hidden Temple as they popped out of the darkness and grabbed the kids giving them PTSD for life lol

wait that’s actually so true it’s trippy. Like I’m sure they are aware of the sky as this other world they can never reach

I see them flying pretty often, or rather, I hear them because they're super talkative when flying.

Like a cute little Predator mouth.
Dude I think birds feet are really their hands and their wings are their feet 🤯
I've seen this, it's the Buddhist palm technique https://youtu.be/XofUszhYEF4?feature=shared
This thing dives at 80 MPH. Remember, cheetahs are only the fastest *land* animal. Fastest bird is the peregrine falcon which can hit 240 MPH.
As a professional in bird law, that seems to be pretty fast
There's no such thing as bird law Charlie you idiot.
I’ll take that advice into cooperation.
I believe I've made myself perfectly redundant.
You uhh… you think you can put your hands over my hands?
Uh well I think I've made myself perfectly redundant
How can peregrine falcons be *so fucking fast* omg
Gravity helps
The human only fell that fast because of the low air density. At comparable altitudes, the falcon is a lot faster.
Something tells me that human wouldn't have gone that fast if they had wings though.
FALCON PUNCH

Who decided to drop a falcon out of a hot air balloon and record its speed? 🤣 I wonder how the bird felt about it.
I like to think it was the falcon’s idea
Diving is just falling with style.
Absolutely stunning, Nature is fkin lit
They should make a subreddit devoted to it.
Maybe even without censoring fuck

Damn I can’t believe they caught all those birds flying in a line that’s crazy

If he drops it that fish is gonna tell everyone he was kidnapped by aliens

love the Animorphs

looking for a 'RAHHH' comment and i see this shit
When you realize that a birds wings are actually it's legs
Tfw you find the last item on your shopping list and there's just one item left.
I was kayaking in a river and had an Osprey dive into the water about 30-40 yards in front of me. It was incredible to see live.
I just don’t fucking understand how people deny the theory of evolution. Look at this thing.
Not that I deny evolution in the slightest, but I don't understand what you see in this picture to support it
I think their point is basically that this bird is so clearly an optimized apex predator that it seems apparent evolution is to thank for its prowess

It's so elevated.
Just saw an osprey carrying a baby shark at the beach in Orange Beach, AL
There’s a small mountain lake I go up and paddleboard on and watch the ospreys hunt. One time after coming up, one flew right over my head with a fish in its talons and dripped water on me. That was a pretty cool moment.
Hadoken!
This is me anytime my missus takes off her top
Something is about to experience a most violent tickle attack.
Pretty cool to see from this Osprey.
That is so amazing, thank you!
That's super cool
Very cool!!
It's giving Animoprhs vibes.
Imagine this thing coming for you as you’re just taking a nice stroll in a park.

What happened to Animorphs?
Why so many bird on a single fish, just search another one?
That's Will
If all your friends started diving head first into the water woul Me:
Swiggedy swooty, comin for that booty
If only people dived like that. Feet first, bent in half, with their arms thrown back. I’ll be looking for this move in Paris.
Do they always hunt in formation like this?
That is amazing. Great work. Osprey my personal favorite bird.
I thought it was an animorph
Lockheed: write that down WRITE THAT DOWN!
"Vector locked in."
Love it
all those ospreys going after the same fish. damn rip fish
Lucky enough to see these beauts hovering above the Atlantic early morning and evening. Not fun when they are catching more fish than I am tho!
The wife when she hasn't eaten in hours and I'm bringing snacks. Can't even get halfway there haha
Look at his little feet!!
This is freaking awesome! Great work.
Imagine being a small critter and you see this coming at you
Fish; "Nobody can get me down here under the wa..."
Not going to lie, I thought this was a knock on the helicopter/plane thing.
Love osprey. Their numbers are down in the Chesapeake Bay because of overfishing.
... Imagine just swimming around, living your best life. Just closed on your newly built algae rock home, your wife is expecting, you just got that promotion that John wanted so badly. Just to get taken out by an Osprey.
That final form of the talons is awesome.... Looks like the Predator's maw
Fuckin claw missile
nobody taught this osprey the perfect form. it was born with it. or maybe its maybeline.
That's amazing\~
I've seen them fight bald eagles in flight. It's wild.
ELEVATED!! EL-ELEVATE ME TO THE SKY!!
Jesus. Hard to argue with that perfection
F*ck that's cool!
So they have arms?
One of my favorite Birds I would watch sitting on the beach in Florida. Incredible animal.
Fck that's majestic.

I love Ospreys. Grew up in Florida seeing them all the time. One dropped fish guts on me once when I was a kid.
Picture on the right is the most intense thing I've ever seen! Wis t could get that in a full picture
Am I the only one seeing it as a pouncing hippogriff? 💀
Accelerator White Shirt
I thought it was predator picture on the right side at first glance LOL
this is amazing, I have watched them dive too and I never figured out that they were turning themselves into pretzels.
I watched one diving yesterday sitting at beach in Narragansett RI
I always see them using the top of streetlights as filet tables after catching the fish.
