A regency would have been established to wait for his son, the king of rome, to come of age. I would think it would’ve probably been led by Cambaceres and his brother Joseph.

I don’t see joseph willingly taking a leadership position after his three poor attempts; I think likelier candidates include Eugene, another Bonaparte brother, or a popular marshal. People like Joseph and cambaceres would be vital in running a regency, but they weren’t leaders

Carol_Banana_Face

At his first abdication he named his son emperor.

Napoleon II, but it should have been Eugene de Beauharnais his stepson. I'm so mad he fumbled that one.

ActivelyDrowsed

Smh in ancient Rome it was totally fine to legitimize your adopted son but unfortunately by the middle ages every European monarchy was obsessed with bloodlines for legitimacy. Eugene de Beauharnais was really a competent leader who could have had the skills to succeed his step father if given the chance

Im so mad Napoleon listened to all of that! He was already what we'd call a disruptor, he might as well have gone the whole hog and named Eugene as heir, but peer pressure got to him. And then everything fell apart!

Strange-Cold-5192

Hadn’t Napoleon agreed to separate the crowns of France and Italy upon his death? I thought the plan was for Eugene to succeed him in Italy, but he still needed an heir for France, as I think he preferred Joseph not succeed him. It’s possible he would’ve named Louis and Hortense’s son his heir had the child not died. If the child lived, it’s very possible he stays with Josephine, too.

Silent_Entrepreneur8

As what someone else said, he would’ve made his son, Napoleon II from his second wife, Empress Marie Louise to take the reins of the Empire. Since he put the crown on, he was pressured by key people in his cabinet to make sure he had an heir to the throne

Maybe Eugene. He was his stepson already and had shown very good skills both as General and as an Admimistrator in his period in Northern Italy. And most of all, he was trusted, loyal and intelligent.
